1. EXT. Campus Field. DAY.
(The scene opens on the Campus football field, where students, including Jensen, Avery and Tru, are playing a game of football)

JENSEN
Break!

(Upbeat rock music plays over the scene)

JENSEN
Red Dog, right! Red Dog, right! 26!

AVERY
Come on!

(Jensen grabs the balls and throws it to Tru)

PLAYER
Gotcha

(Tru keeps running)

JENSEN
Nice. Nicely done. Bring it in strong. Nice hands, Davies

TRU
Thanks, nice throw

AVERY
You two, all day with the compliments!

JENSEN
Nothing wrong with a little positive reinforcement

AVERY
Oh, yes…no, I’m sure that Montana always got all starry eyed every time Rice hauled one in

 (Tru and Jensen laugh)

JENSEN
It’s hard to tell, with the helmets and everything

AVERY
Yeah

JENSEN
Ok, 48 red, break!

(they all get into position again)

JENSEN
48 red!

(he grabs the ball and is about to throw it when he is shoulder-barged to the floor by an opposing player. The referee blows the whistle)

TRU
Are you okay?

REFEREE
Penalty!

JENSEN
God, I think I did something to my wrist

TRU
Let me see, let me see

(he stands, and she presses his wrist gently)

TRU
Well, it’s not broken. You know, you may have sprained your radial carpal ligament

JENSEN
Check you out. It’s pretty good for someone who’s just auditing med class

TRU
Maybe you should sub out, put some ice on it

JENSEN
What, with just 10 short yards between us and intramural glory? Not a chance. Let’s do it

TRU
All right, tough guy

2. EXT. Campus Field. DAY.
(Tru and her friends collect their bags from the bench)

AVERY
Nice win, kids. Don’t forget, cram session later, the cadaver lab. Nobody leaves until we make the endocrine system our bitch

TRU
Oh, I’m gonna be late for work

JENSEN
I’m heading in that direction, you want some company?

TRU
Yeah

JENSEN
All right

3. EXT. Street. DAY.

JENSEN
You swear you’ve never played flag football before today?

TRU
It was my professional debut

JENSEN
You’re a natural, and a hell of an upgrade over Tyler. I swear to God, this guy’s got hands like stone. Tru?

(Tru moves across to look in a store window)

TRU
That bag

JENSEN
What?

TRU
It’s just like the one Dr. Kendall used to have. Our family doctor when I was a kid. Whenever he made a house call he used to bring a bag just like that

JENSEN
Wait, you knew a doctor that actually did house calls?

TRU
He was the sweetest guy ever. He was the first person who told me I should be a doctor

JENSEN
You should buy it

TRU
I’m not a doctor. I’m not even a real med student

JENSEN
Yeah but you will be, right?

TRU
Come on. Davis is probably wondering where I am

4. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Tru and Jensen step out the elevator)

TRU
Hey, are you sure you don’t want me to put some ice on that wrist?

JENSEN
Yeah thanks anyway, I’m gonna run to the clinic. Doing some volunteering this afternoon, so I’ll get some then

TRU
Ah

(Jensen leans down to kiss her, but Davis’s voice interrupts them)

DAVIS(off-screen)
Hey Tru, is that you?

TRU
Ahh…yeah

DAVIS
Oh, hi…hi, Jensen

JENSEN
Hey, Davis. Oh, so, I’ll uh, I will…uh, see you at the cram session

TRU
Yeah, you will

JENSEN
See you later, man

DAVIS
Bye

 (he walks over to Tru)

I’m sorry, I didn’t realise that you two were…

TRU
That’s okay, nothing happened

DAVIS
Of course nothing happened, because I walked in at the worst possible time, which is my greatest talent

TRU
Hey, uh…Davis, can I ask you a kind of personal question?

DAVIS
Yeah. Go ahead

TRU
Um, after your wife…died…how long was it before you, you know…

DAVIS
Started dating? Uh…four years

TRU
Oh

DAVIS
But that had more to do with social deficiencies than anything else. Look, I know it’s been a few months since Luc died, but you know, if you’re starting to have feelings about someone, you should accept it

TRU
It just…it feels soon, is all

DAVIS
Well, it’s always gonna feel soon, whether it’s today, or tomorrow, or four years from now

TRU
How do you know when you’re ready?

DAVIS
You fall in love again

5. EXT. Store. DAY.
(Jensen walks up to the window, looks at the bag and smiles. He enters the store. Almost straight away, another man enters. He’s wearing a baseball cap. He closes the door after him and turns the sign from “open” to “closed”. Then he takes a gun out of his pocket)

Cut to: Shot of the “Closed” sign in the window

MAN: (off-screen)
Freeze! No-one move

Cut to: Shot of Tru’s apartment block – NIGHT

6. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Tru enters, with a bag of groceries.)

HARRISON(off-screen)
Help me, Tru

(Tru looks across into the living room in alarm)

HARRISON
Please tell me….please tell me that you can fix this?

(he gestures to a rather dramatic haircut)

TRU
Ooh, what happened?

HARRISON
Well, Dad made some comment the other day, about my hair. He said: “You look a little scruffy to be an employee at a law firm”, so I said, hey, why not make the old man happy? Get a real haircut for once… (he trails off, upset)

TRU
You can’t get one of those for less than six bucks

HARRISON
Come on, Tru. You’re a girl, you read all those fashion magazines, there’s gotta be something you could do, Tru

(Tru picks up a baseball cap from the side and puts it on his head)

TRU
There. It’s perfect! (pointing to a suit on the side) Is this a new suit?

HARRISON
Yeah…yeah, yeah, yeah, I say, you know, what the hell. Might as well go all out. Get myself some new threads. Do you like?

TRU
It’s very professional

HARRISON
Let’s not kid ourselves, shall we? We both know what they call a guy like me wearing a suit like that… the defendant

TRU
Oh come on, Harry, you’re not that guy anymore

HARRISON
I was crazy to think that I could change. I can’t…I can’t change who I am, Tru. Let’s face it, okay?

TRU
Hey. You can change. You changed your hair

(Harrison points a finger at her)

TRU
I’m just saying

HARRISON
Watch yourself! Not now. Listen, I gotta go. Thanks for the hat

TRU
Totally, you’re welcome. Bye, Harr

 (Harrison glares at her)

TRU
Ooh…sorry…sorry

HARRISON
Not funny. It’s not funny

(he slams the door as he leaves, and Tru grins to herself as she gets a loaf out of her groceries bag. There is a knock on her door)

Oh…Harrison, you forgot your…

(she picks up the suit, and opens the door. It’s Avery, and she’s crying)

TRU
Avery, what’s wrong?

AVERY
He’s dead

TRU
What? Who’s dead?

AVERY
Jensen. Jensen’s dead

 [Fade to Black]

 [Opening Credits]

[Flashes of the day’s images in sequence]

7. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Davis pulls the sheet up over Jensen’s body. Tru enters)

DAVIS
Tru, I’m…I’m so sorry

TRU
I’m not here for condolences, Davis. I’m here to fix this. Please, before he asks, tell me what I need to know to save him

DAVIS
Okay, um, according to the police report, there was a hold-up this afternoon, and Jensen got in the way. He was shot once in the chest at approximately 5:30 and he died en route to the hospital

TRU
Where was the hold-up?

DAVIS
A consignment store on West Broadway

TRU
He went back for the bag

[Flashback: Jensen and Tru looking at the doctor’s bag in the window]

TRU
There was this doctor’s bag in the window, and he knew that I liked it so he must have gone back for it. I guess I should have seen this coming, huh?

DAVIS
How could you possibly see this coming?

TRU
Typhoid Mary, remember? Everyone I care about get hurt. Everyone I love is in danger just for knowing me

DAVIS
You’re wrong about that

TRU
Really? Because my track record says otherwise. In the past four months, I lost Luc and Jensen. Even Harrison died once

DAVIS
Yeah but you saved him

TRU
All that means is I’m one for three when it comes to people I care about

CARRIE
Tru? Davis told me the news. I just wanted to let you know how terribly sorry I am

 (Tru looks at Davis)

DAVIS
She’s a grief counsellor. I thought maybe you’d like to talk to her

CARRIE
We could go up to my office if you’d like

TRU
I’m not going anywhere. Not when he needs me

DAVIS(to Carrie)
Maybe we should talk outside

CARRIE
Okay

DAVIS(off-screen)
Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea

(Camera pans across to show Davis and Carrie talking in the next room)

CARRIE
No, you were right to call me. She’s clearly in denial over his death

DAVIS
Yeah, but still, we should give her some time

CARRIE
Okay. Whatever you think. Hey, I’ll be upstairs if you need me

Cut to: Carrie approaching the elevator, dialling on her cellphone

Cut to: JACK (answering his cellphone)
It’s Jack

Cut to: CARRIE
It’s me. I’ve got news

8. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Tru is still sitting beside Jensen’s body)

AVERY(off-screen)
How long has she been in there?

Cut to show Avery and Davis watching through the glass window

DAVIS
Four hours

AVERY
I should go. Jensen’s parent’ plane lands in 30 minutes. God you should’ve seen me earlier when I called them to break the news. I couldn’t stop crying. Some doctor I’m gonna be. I can’t even talk about death without completely losing it

DAVIS
I wish I could tell you it gets easier

AVERY
I’d better go. Take care of her

DAVIS
Yep

(as Avery leaves, he goes into the next room to join Tru)

DAVIS(cont’d)
Hey, I was thinking if you’re hungry maybe you’d like to go down to the diner

TRU
Not now, no. I’ve got things to do

DAVIS
Are you leaving?

TRU
It’s been four hours and Jensen hasn’t asked for help. Neither have any of the other bodies. So it’s time to face the facts. If I want the day to restart, I have to find myself some new dead people

DAVIS
How…how do you plan on doing that?

TRU
Last I checked, there are five other morgues in the county, I’ll drive to every single one if I have to

DAVIS
But, Tru…

TRU
I’m not gonna lose him, Davis, I’m just not

9. INT. Standard Diner. NIGHT.

DAVIS
Hi. Um…take-out for Davis, please?

(the waitress hands over a bag)

That was fast. Thank you

(he turns round to see Jack standing there)

JACK
Word has it our girl hit every morgue in a 20-mile radius tonight. No need to fabricate a story, Davis. I know about Jensen, and I know exactly what she’s trying to do. Poor girl just doesn’t have any luck with boyfriends now, does she?

DAVIS
Yeah, thanks to you

JACK
Oh, the Luc thing. Yeah, that was my fault. I admit it. But Jensen? That’s fate, sending a message

DAVIS
Well lucky for him, Tru has a knack for changing fate

JACK
It’s different this time. She’s not God, Davis. She can’t pick and choose the people that she wants to save, they have to choose her

DAVIS
Why are you telling me this? Why?

JACK
Two reasons. First and foremost: I happen to think you agree with me. Deep down inside, you know what she’s doing is wrong, but you’re too damn loyal to say anything about it, and second, she won’t listen to a word I say but she might listen to you

DAVIS
Well you are right about one thing, I am…I am loyal to Tru. And if she needs help saving Jensen, then she’ll get it

JACK
Fine. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you

Cut to: Shot of City Morgue – NIGHT

10. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Davis sits eating his take-out. The door opens and Tru enters. She walks over to Jensen’s body)

TRU
I know I can help you, I just…need a little more time

DAVIS
Any luck at the other morgues?

 (Tru shakes her head)

I’m sorry. You’re tired, you should go home

TRU
I can’t. Not until a body asks for help

DAVIS
Tru, that could take days. I mean, weeks

TRU
I can wait

DAVIS
Well, maybe you shouldn’t

TRU
What?

DAVIS
Look, I know you care for Jensen. But the fact is - is that he didn’t ask for help, and maybe we should assume there’s a reason why

TRU
I don’t care if there’s a reason. I can help him and I will

DAVIS
Well, maybe you’re not supposed to, you know? Maybe it’s a violation of some rule, I mean, aren’t you worried about consequences here?

TRU
I don’t know about you, but I didn’t get a rule book

DAVIS
I didn’t get a rule book either, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t rules, Tru

(the telephone rings in his office, he goes over to answer it)

City Morgue. Yes. Okay

TRU
Someone just called for a pick-up, didn’t they?

DAVIS
Yes, Third and Ogden. I know that it’s difficult, especially with someone with your abilities. But maybe you just have to accept the fact that you can’t help Jensen

TRU
Is that what your favourite grief counsellor told you? That I’m in denial? Well, she’s right, I am in denial. I deny this. And you know what? I can. Excuse me, I have a pick-up

Cut to: workmen shifting through rubble – NIGHT

11. EXT. Food Court. NIGHT.

DETECTIVE
The deceased escaped from a work detail around 11:30 this morning

TRU
He was a prisoner?

DETECTIVE
Yeah. He was doing the roadside work on Route 101 when he busted loose. Used a fork to unlock the monitoring device on his ankle, and took off. We lost him for a couple of hours, then he stole this SUV and a chase ensued

Shot of the SUV, buckled, having driven through a food court patio and into a wall and reduced it to mostly rubble

DAVIS
I guess we know how that ended. Was anyone else hurt?

DETECTIVE
Dinner rush hadn’t started yet so the patio was empty, thank God

TRU
He was the only casualty?

DETECTIVE(nodding)
Now he’s all yours. Enjoy

DAVIS
Tru, look…I know that you’re angry. But if this body asks for help, and your day restarts, promise me you won’t forget what we talked about

TRU
Don’t worry Davis, I won’t forget

(Davis walks away, and Tru leans down to the body, pulling the sheet off)

TRU
Come on, please…

(she notices a tattoo on his arm, a heart with the name “Mandy” inside. Then his head turns towards her)

TRAVIS
Save me

[Flashes of the day’s images as it rewinds]

12. INT. Tru’s bedroom. DAY.
(Tru awakens in bed and sits up)

TRU
Now that’s more like it

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images in sequence]

13. INT. Carrie’s Office. DAY.
 (Carrie answers her telephone)

CARRIE
Hello?

Cut to: JACK
It’s me

Cut to: CARRIE
Oh, you’re lucky you caught me. I was just on my way to the morgue

Cut to: JACK
Good, ‘cause I’ve got an assignment for you

14. INT. Morgue. DAY.

DAVIS
Please tell me they caught the guy that did this to Jensen

 (Tru shakes her head)

This is gonna be a tough one

TRU
Tell me about it

DAVIS
Okay. Two bodies, two “help me’s”, two totally unrelated deaths

TRU
Guess we’ve got our work cut out for us

DAVIS
Well, how did it happen? Did one body ask for help, and then the other? Or did they ask at the same time?

TRU
Same time. It was like in stereo

DAVIS
By the way, I’m sorry about Jensen. I know the two of you were getting close

TRU
Look, he’s still alive Davis, and I am gonna save him today

DAVIS
I know, I know, I know. And I’m going to make sure the prisoner doesn’t escape that work detail

TRU
Actually, I was gonna hand the prisoner off to Harrison. Because foiling the escape means talking to the police, and Harrison’s got a little more experience in that department

DAVIS
All right

TRU
But while I’m with Jensen, I need you to find a way to close the consignment store where he was killed

DAVIS
Right. Make sure the store’s not held up so no innocent lives are in jeopardy, I’ve got it

TRU
Thanks, Davis

DAVIS
Is that it?

TRU
That’s it. If I need anything else, I’ll call you

(she turns to walk to the elevator, and bumps into Carrie who has just got out)

Oh, sorry

CARRIE
That’s okay

(to Davis) Hi. Wow, where’s she off to in such a hurry?

DAVIS
Um…she’s gonna go play flag football at the park. She’s, uh, quite the athlete

15. EXT. Park. DAY.
(Tru gets out of her car, on her cellphone)

Cut to: HARRISON at the hairdressers
Yo

Cut to: TRU
Harry, I need your help

Cut to: HARRISON
Well can it wait? I’m about to get a haircut

Cut to: TRU
Whoa, just because Dad called you scruffy, doesn’t mean you’re due for a makeover

Cut to: HARRISON
Oh, so I take it someone’s day restarted?

Cut to: TRU
It sure did

Cut to: HARRISON
The haircut?

Cut to: TRU
Does not end well

Cut toHarrison jumping up out his chair

HARRISON
So what do you need?

Cut to: TRU
A prisoner’s gonna escape a work detail on route 101 in less than an hour. Later today he dies in a car crash after a whole big car chase with the cops

Cut to: HARRISON
Unless yours truly can put a whammy on it

Cut to: TRU
There’s just one problem, I never got his name. So I need you to point him out in person

Cut to: HARRISON
Well how do you expect me to do that without looking suspicious?

Cut to Tru, looking out onto the park, where Jensen is playing football

HARRISON(v.o.)
Tru? Hey Tru, are you there?

TRU
You’ll think of something

Cut to: HARRISON
Just give me a description, I’ll see what I can do

16. EXT. Park. DAY.

JENSEN
Break!

 (they all get into position)

48 red! 48 red!

(Tru watches the guy who shoulder-barged Jensen over on day 1, as he goes to jump at Jensen, she puts her leg out and he trips to the ground. The referee blows his whistle)

TRU
Sorry. Adrenaline

REFEREE
You’re out. One play

AVERY
Remind me never to piss her off, huh?

(Tru runs over to the bench and reaches into her bag. Jack walks up)

JACK
That was nice, Davies. Didn’t know you had it in you

TRU
Sometimes you gotta fight dirty to win. You of all people should know that

JACK
Let’s cut to the chase, shall we? I know you’re planning on saving Jensen, and I’m here to talk you out of it

TRU
Considering you only see the lives of people who ask me for help, how’d you even know he died?

JACK
There’s plenty of ways to find out about a murder. Watch the news, listen to the police scanner. I relive days too

TRU
Well, you can save the speech about preserving fate. I’ve heard it

JACK
It’s bad enough you save people that do ask for help, but saving people that don’t? You’re taking things to an entirely new level of bad

TRU
This from a man who pushed a woman with leukaemia off a building

JACK
There’s a bigger picture here, Tru. We may be on opposite sides, but each side has its rules. You break those rules, and the repercussions will be severe, not just for you, but for Jensen

TRU
Is that a threat?

JACK
It’s a guarantee. Believe it or not, I’m trying to do you a favour. Let me put his death back on track, for both your sakes

TRU
If there are rules, you broke them when you killed Luc. I’m willing to do the same to save Jensen

17. EXT. Route 101. DAY.
(the prisoners, wearing orange suits, are raking and digging. Camera moves to one of their leg tags, and up his body to his arm, where he has a tattoo, a heart with the name “Mandy”. At the roadside, Harrison gets out of his car)

OFFICER
Can I help you?

HARRISON
No, sir. But I can most certainly help you. You see, I’m with a law firm, Davies, O’Donnell and Cross, downtown. I’m sure you’ve heard of us

(he shows the Officer a business card. The Officer shakes his head)

No? Well, anywho, um…well, shall we say one of my less fortunate clients is currently serving a ten-year stretch, Now he’s looking to shave some time off his sentence by ratting out one of your guys who’s planning on escaping this very work detail

OFFICER
Which guy?

HARRISON
Don’t have a name, just a description. In his late forties, light hair, he’s got a tattoo on his arm that says “Mandy”. If you don’t believe me, just check the guy for a fork. He’s gonna use it to pop that little LoJack gizmo they’ve got on their ankles there

OFFICER
Wait right here

(he walks over to his partner and speaks with him, quietly. Harrison reaches in his pocket for his cellphone)

Cut to: TRUwatching Jensen on the football field
Hello?

Cut to: HARRISON
Hey, it’s me. I just wanted you to know everything’s under control

(the officers begin searching the prisoner)

Cut to: TRU
The prisoner’s safe?

Cut to: HARRISON
Well, they’re shaking him down as we speak

 (the officer uncovers a fork)

Cut to: TRU
Thanks, Harry. You’re a lifesaver

Cut to: HARRISON
Yeah well, tell me something I don’t know

(he hangs up and puts his cellphone away. The officers are leading the prisoner away from the work detail. Harrison watches, when suddenly the prisoner places a fist in the first officer’s groin and gets the gun off him)

(the second officer points his own gun at the prisoner)

TRAVIS
Drop it! Drop it!

(he points the gun at the first officer, until the officer lowers his gun)

TRAVIS
Put it on the ground. Now get your keys out. Take that thing off of my leg. Now!

(to Harrison) Is that your car?

HARRISON
Yeah…actually, it’s, uh…

TRAVIS
Come on…

(he grabs Harrison, pointing the gun at him, pulling him towards the car)

HARRISON
Oh, hey, look, trust me, you don’t wanna do this, pal. Look, listen…

TRAVIS
Get in the car, now!

HARRISON
Okay man, let’s talk about this…

TRAVIS
Come on, move it!

HARRISON
All right

(they both climb into the car)

TRAVIS
Let’s go!

(the car zooms off down the street)

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images in sequence]

18. EXT. Park. DAY.

AVERY
Nice win, kids. Don’t forget the cram session later, all right? The cadaver lab. Nobody leaves until we make the endocrine system our bitch

TRU(to Jensen)
Hey, I’ve got my car today, so if you need a ride to the clinic?

JENSEN
How’d you know I was volunteering?

TRU
Avery mentioned it. She said you were that much closer to sainthood. And Davis just gave me the afternoon off, so if you think you could use an extra pair of hands?

JENSEN
Yeah, always. I just have to warn you, it’s mostly lab work and filing. It can get pretty boring

TRU
Believe me, I could use a little more boredom in my life

JENSEN
Okay

TRU
Okay

JENSEN
Yeah

19. Roadside. DAY.
(Travis brings the car to a halt on the roadside)

HARRISON
Woo. So, uh…what are you doing?

TRAVIS
The cops are gonna be looking for this car. I gotta ditch it

HARRISON
Right. Right, I hear you. Good idea

TRAVIS
I’m sorry about the gun by the way. I hope I didn’t scare you too bad

HARRISON
Oh…I’ve been there, done that

TRAVIS
Actually, I hate guns. Never held one before today

HARRISON
Oh...you could have fooled me

TRAVIS
Thanks for the ride, kid

(they get out of the car, and Travis tosses the gun into the bushes)

TRAVIS(gesturing to the new suit in the car)
This your suit? Mind if I borrow?

HARRISON
Just happy to be alive here. It’s all yours

(he turns around while Travis moves away to put the suit on)

Okay, Harrison, think think think…what would Tru do?

(he turns around again, Travis is putting on the shirt)

HARRISON
Here’s the thing. No-one is more hooked up in this town than I am. So whatever you need to get a clean getaway, fake ID’s, passports, bus tickets…

TRAVIS
No thanks. I’ll take care of myself

HARRISON
Ah, but you might change your mind. In which case, I should probably stick around

TRAVIS
No. I won’t, and you shouldn’t

HARRISON
I hear you. I’m hearing you…you know, but call me crazy…

TRAVIS
You know what I can’t figure out? I let you go, and you’re not going

HARRISON
Well look here’s the thing…let’s just say I’m not a fan of the cops. Besides that, you seem like a decent guy, now, really, let me do something. Please

(Travis throws the orange suit into the car and begins to walk away)

TRAVIS
Try to keep up. You know, you are an extremely weird kid

HARRISON
Yeah, I get that a lot

Cut to: Shot of the clinic – DAY

20. INT. Clinic. DAY.
 (Tru is on her cellphone)

HARRISON(on voicemail)
Hey this is Harrison, leave a message

TRU
Hey Harry, I haven’t heard from you since this morning. I just wanted to make sure you’re okay. Call me

JENSEN
How you holding up?

TRU
Couple of paper cuts, but otherwise good

JENSEN
Nice

NURSE
Jensen, I need you to take a medical history in Exam Room One, patient’s name is Stan Kirby

JENSEN
Stan Kirby. All right, no problem

21. INT. Exam Room One. DAY.
 (Jensen enters the room)

JENSEN
All right Mr Kirby, let’s get started

(he looks up and sees Jack sitting there)

Well, you’re not Mr Kirby are you. I somehow seriously doubt that you’re here because your sciatica is acting up

JACK
It’s good to see you again, Jensen

JENSEN
Likewise, Jack. You mind telling me why you’re here?

JACK
First of all, let me apologize for sneaking in like this. I only did it because I didn’t want Tru to know I was here

JENSEN
Because?

JACK
Because I need to talk to you alone…about Tru. She’s been keeping something from you. Something important. And I think you deserve to know about it

JENSEN
Okay

JACK
You see, she lost someone close to her not long ago. It was a boyfriend. His name was Luc

JENSEN
I didn’t know that

JACK
Of course you didn’t. Tru didn’t tell you. I can’t really say I blame her, I mean…”my last boyfriend died” isn’t exactly a mood setter. But the thing is…Tru never got over Luc. And since he died, she really hasn’t been able to get close to anyone. She keeps sabotaging herself

JENSEN
What do you mean?

JACK
Well haven’t you noticed how secretive she is? How she’s always running off but will never tell you where she’s going? Look, I think Tru is a fantastic girl and I can tell she’s crazy about you and that’s why I’m here. I don’t wanna see her screw this up

JENSEN
I appreciate that Jack, I do

JACK
There’s other things you need to know, but I’m late for another appointment. Why don’t you meet me later on and I’ll tell you everything? For Tru’s sake

JENSEN
Okay

JACK
Great. I know the perfect place

22. INT. Clinic reception. DAY.

KIRBY
I don’t believe this. I’m five minutes late and you give my appointment away

NURSE
Just spell your name for me, Sir?

KIRBY
Stan Kirby. K – I – R – B – Y

NURSE
That’s odd. I checked a Stan Kirby into an exam room 10 minutes ago

KIRBY
Well, I’m Stan Kirby. So whoever you checked in, it wasn’t me

(Tru walks off down the corridor and into Exam Room One. Jensen is there, talking to an elderly patient)

JENSEN
And, uh…

(they both look up in surprise)

TRU
This…isn’t the Supply Room

JENSEN
Right, which is why they have the big sign on the door that says “Exam Room One”

TRU
Sorry

JENSEN
That’s all for now, Mr Farmer. The doctor’s gonna be with you in a few minutes, okay? All right

(he follows Tru out of the room)

TRU
I thought the nurse asked you to see a guy named Kirby

JENSEN
Oh, well they just…they must’ve given me the wrong chart. It happens all the time here

TRU
Oh

JENSEN
Um, but listen, I’m gonna get going, so I’m gonna see you later?

TRU
Actually, I was thinking maybe we could get some coffee, you know? Kill some time before we hit the lab

JENSEN
Oh, I wish that I could but I gotta run to the library to grab some books on Endocrinology for the cram session, so…

TRU
Well then you should just come to the morgue. Davis is like, the endocrinology king. He’s got tons of books on the subject

JENSEN
Yeah, I just, I don’t wanna put him out, you know? Because he’s…

TRU
Trust me, he’d be happy to help. Really

JENSEN
What are we waiting for? Let’s go

23. EXT. Street. DAY.

HARRISON
I’ve gotta tell you, I’ve seen my share of fugitives from justice flicks, and uh…not one of them had a scene with a guy on the run who could stroll through suburbia in broad daylight

TRAVIS
There’s somebody I need to see

HARRISON
Oh…

(Travis runs up some steps and rings the doorbell. A woman answers)

TRAVIS
Hello Barbara

BARBARA
Travis! I thought you were still…what the hell did you do?

TRAVIS
You can read all about it in the paper tomorrow

BARBARA
Oh, you’re unbelievable

TRAVIS
Just tell me where the wedding is and I’ll go

BARBARA
No!

TRAVIS
I’m gonna go to every church in this town. You know I will

BARBARA
Don’t you dare, Travis. Don’t you dare ruin this day for her (notices Harrison) Who is he?

TRAVIS
Um…hostage

HARRISON
Yo

BARBARA
A hostage? You brought a hostage to my house?

TRAVIS
Place looks great by the way. David a good provider?

(he enters the house and picks up some keys from the side)

BARBARA
Better than you

TRAVIS
You look great, Barbara

(he and Harrison run down the steps again to the car on the drive)

BARBARA
Touch that car and I’m calling the cops, Travis!

HARRISON
No no no, no cops. Bad idea

BARBARA
Last chance, Travis

HARRISON
Look if you call the cops, they’re gonna hunt Travis down like an animal. Now that he’s got wheels, there could be a chase. Innocent people could get hurt. Just give me some time, let me talk to him, try to get him to turn himself in peacefully

BARBARA
That car better come back without a scratch on it

HARRISON
You have my word

(they drive away, passing a car parked on the roadside. Jack is inside. He flips open his phone)

JACK
I’d like to report a stolen vehicle

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue

24. INT. Morgue. DAY.

CARRIE
Hey. You okay?

DAVIS
Yeah, I’m just waiting on a phone call from Tru

CARRIE
The two of you are thick as thieves

DAVIS
Yeah, we have a pretty unique relationship

CARRIE
Oh…as in, you used to go out?

DAVIS(laughs)
No. God, no

CARRIE
What is it?

DAVIS
Um…there’s…uh….something about Tru that you don’t know about. No one knows it…except me

CARRIE
It’s okay

DAVIS
She’s not…uh, properly insured to drive the morgue van. It’s my fault really, I didn’t do the paperwork, and…

(Tru and Jensen walk in at that moment)

TRU
Hi. Hope we’re not interrupting

DAVIS
No. No, no, no. Uh, (to Carrie) have you…have you? Jensen, this is Carrie

JENSEN
Hey. Nice to meet you

CARRIE
Likewise

TRU
We were hoping maybe we could borrow some books

DAVIS
Yeah. Any particular subject in mind?

(as Davis walks off, Carrie backs into the next room and dials on her cellphone)

Cut to: JACK
Got something for me?

Cut to: CARRIE
Yeah, I thought you should know that the boyfriend’s here at the morgue

Cut to: JACK
He’s supposed to be meeting me later, but he may need some prodding. If you see an opportunity to seal the deal…

Cut to: CARRIE
I will take it

Cut to: JACK
Good girl

25. INT. Barbara’s Car. DAY.

HARRISON
So, uh, I take it that was your ex back there?

TRAVIS
Yep

HARRISON
That whole wedding you mentioned?

TRAVIS
My daughter’s. Mandy

HARRISON
So that’s why you busted loose today, so you can go. So, what’re gonna say to her when you see her?

TRAVIS
Nothing. Mandy doesn’t know I’m her father. Her mom married David shortly after I started my sentence. Mandy was a little baby, they never told her about me

HARRISON
That’s pretty cold huh, don’t you think?

TRAVIS
David gave her a good life, with all the things that I couldn’t, and I’m grateful for that. That’s why all I want is a glimpse of my baby on her big day. After that, I’m gonna turn myself in

HARRISON
What’s that?

TRAVIS
It’s a receipt from a florist. I found it under the seat. It’s a big order. It’s going to St. Augustine’s today

HARRISON
Guess we know where that wedding is, huh? So, uh…if you don’t mind me asking, what’d they lock you up for?

TRAVIS
I was a getaway driver. Bank heists, mostly. I started when I was about your age

HARRISON
So before you got busted, did you ever think of going straight?

TRAVIS
Are you kidding me? All the time, kid. I learned pretty quick, though. A man can’t change what he is

HARRISON
Of course he can. I know it’s hard to believe, but I was…kind of a…small-time scammer

TRAVIS
Really?

HARRISON
No, yeah, I’m serious. And now I got a nine-to-five and uh, well, I’m kicking much ass I might add

TRAVIS
You’ll slip up. Guys like us always do

(A police siren begins to wail behind them)

Damn it. Hold on!

(he speeds up and zooms down the street, two cop cars after them)

26. INT. Morgue. DAY.

DAVIS
And last but not least, Ampoule’s Modern Physiology

JENSEN
Oh…thanks. They’re heavy. It’s good

DAVIS(to Tru)
Can I have a word with you, please?

JENSEN
I’ll just…read these books

(he sits down to a table, as Davis and Tru go into the next room)

TRU
Is something wrong?

DAVIS
Well, you tell me. You didn’t check in with me once today

TRU
Well I didn’t know I needed to

DAVIS
Well, I left you three messages, you didn’t call me back

TRU
Because I had everything under control

DAVIS
Two people asked for help last night, that is a lot to handle. Even for you. You know, if you’re trying to keep something from me, whatever it is, I can handle it. I just wanna help, Tru

TRU
Two people didn’t ask for help last night Davis, only one did. And it wasn’t Jensen

DAVIS
I don’t understand. Jensen didn’t die?

TRU
I’m saying he didn’t ask for help. Look, I’m sorry I lied. I didn’t think that you’d help me save Jensen if you knew the truth

DAVIS
Tru, look, at the end of the day, you’re the one in charge of saving lives, I get that. And if you ever need me, I’ll always be here for you. Especially today, Tru

Cut to: Jensen in the next room, looking through a book. Carrie walks in

JENSEN
Hey

CARRIE
Hey. Oh, is Davis…?

JENSEN
Outside, talking to Tru

CARRIE
Oh, great. I’m telling you, once those two get started it takes forever for them to stop

JENSEN
Really?

CARRIE
You kinda look like there’s some place you need to be

JENSEN
Yeah, I’m supposed to meet somebody, but I don’t wanna interrupt them, you know?

CARRIE
Oh, don’t worry about it. I’ll just tell them you had to run

 Cut to: Davis and Tru

DAVIS
But I think there’s another reason that you’re keeping the truth from me. I think, that on some level, you think there’s something wrong with this. You know, that there’s a reason that Jensen didn’t ask for help

TRU
You think that fate wanted him to stay dead?

DAVIS
Don’t you?

TRU
I don’t give a damn what fate wants, because fate obviously doesn’t give a damn about me

DAVIS
How can you say that? You of all people?

TRU
Look at my life, Davis. Look at everything I’ve sacrificed to do this job. To answer this calling. I’ve lost friends, family, sleep, sanity, you name it, all in the name of fate. And how does fate repay me? It takes the people I’m closest to. First my mother, then Luc, and now Jensen. I’m sorry, but enough is enough. I’m not giving up Jensen without a fight

(she walks over to the door and opens it. The sofa Jensen was sitting on is empty. Carrie is standing by the water cooler)

TRU(cont’d)
Where’s Jensen?

CARRIE
Oh, he left. He said he had to meet a friend

(Tru goes back through the other room, and Davis follows)

TRU
Jack. It’s gotta be. The consignment store, Jack must have sent him back somehow

DAVIS
But I talked the owner into closing it, I even watched him lock up

TRU
Knowing Jack, he found a way to reopen it

[Flashback: DAVIS: “He was shot once in the chest at approximately 5:30 and he died en route to the hospital”]

(Tru looks at her cellphone: the time is already 5:51pm)

TRU
All right, I’ll try and cut him off. In the meantime, keep dialling, see if anyone’s at the store

27. EXT. Street. DAY.
(The sign on the door of the consignment store is turned to “closed”. Tru pulls at the door but it’s definitely locked. She takes out her cellphone)

DAVIS(v.o.)
City Morgue

TRU
He’s not here, Davis. The store’s still closed

Cut to: DAVIS
Yeah, I figured as much. No-one answered when I called

Cut to: TRU
Jack’s got him, I know it

DAVIS(v.o.)
Yeah, but the question is, where?

(Tru glances into the next store window, where a television is displaying the news channel, and the headline: “Breaking news: High Speed Chase”)

TRU
I think I know exactly where Jack took him. To the crash site

28. EXT. Food Court. DAY.
(Jack is sitting to a table outside. Jensen walks up to him)

JACK
Glad you could make it, buddy. I saved you the best seat in the house

(Jensen sits opposite Jack, directly in the path of where the SUV crashed on day one)

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images in sequence]

29. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Tru runs along the street, dialling on her cellphone at the same time)

 Cut to: HARRISON
(to Travis) Ah, might as well. Do you mind?
(to the cell) I had a feeling it was you

Cut to: TRU
Whatever you did this morning, it didn’t work. That prisoner still managed to escape, and now the police are after him

Cut to: HARRISON
Oh, yeah, well I kinda got a front row seat, if you know what I mean?

Cut to: TRU
You what?

Cut to: HARRISON (through gritted teeth)
I’m in the car, with the guy

Cut to: TRU
How?

Cut to: HARRISON
I’d love to tell you the whole story, but, uh, I’m a little busy right now

Cut to: TRU (getting into her car)
I’m five minutes away. But look, whatever you do, just keep him away from the Third Street Café, that’s where he lost control of the car yesterday

Cut to: HARRISON
Oh, well, good news. We’re nowhere near Third Street

(Travis swings the car a sharp right down an alley, passing a sign that reads: 190 3rd Ave)

HARRISON
All right, you know that whole thing about being nowhere near Third? Scratch that

30. EXT. Food Court. DAY.

JACK
Hey, before we get started, would you like a beer?

JENSEN
Yeah, actually, that sounds great

(He begins to wave a waiter over, but Jack stops him)

JACK
I’ll take care of it, I know the bartender here. She always gives me free drinks. You stay right there

Cut to: Travis and Harrison in the car

TRAVIS
I can’t seem to shake these guys

HARRISON
Okay, how about we call it a day and pull over for the nice policeman, what do you say?

TRAVIS
My daughter’s wedding. Not a chance

HARRISON
Okay

(The car speeds out of an alley and bumps so hard on the floor they are both jolted in their seats, Harrison drops his cellphone)

Cut to: TRU
Harry? Harry, are you there?

Cut to: Travis and Harrison. Someone with a bicycle is crossing the road up ahead

Cut to: HARRISON
Oh God, watch out! Whoa! God! God!

(The man on the bicycle falls off it as the car swerves round him to avoid him)

Cut to: TRU
Harry!

(She begins to run towards the Food Court)

Cut to: Jensen sitting alone on the Food Court

Cut to: Travis and Harrison in the car, speeding straight towards the Food Court

HARRISON
Come on!

(He grabs hold of Travis and pulls him out of his passenger-side door, both of them rolling into the road. The car continues speeding straight towards Jensen)

TRU
Jensen!

(he looks up and notices the car about to smash into him, when Tru jumps into him, knocking him sideways and onto the pavement. The car smashes through the tables and into the wall)

TRU
Are you okay?

JENSEN
Yeah, yeah, thank you. What the hell are you doing here?

TRU
Call it fate. Just wait here, I’m gonna go check on the driver

Cut to: Jack, walking away from the scene

Cut to: Tru, running over to Harrison and Travis

TRU
Are you all right?

HARRISON
Yeah, just a couple of bumps and bruises. Nothing to write home about

TRU
Still, we should get you to the hospital, get you checked out

HARRISON
Oh no no no, maybe later. Something me and Travis gotta do

31. EXT. St. Augustine’s Church. DAY.
(the church bells are ringing, and the wedding party is walking down the church steps)

TRAVIS
She is something, isn’t she?

HARRISON
Yeah, she’s a stunner. No doubt about it. The question is, is she worth it?

TRAVIS
What do you think?

(a police car rolls up on the other side of the road)

TRAVIS(cont’d)
Hey, uh, time for me to go, kid. Here’s hoping I never see you around the yard

HARRISON
Like I told you. I’m not that guy anymore

TRAVIS
You know, I think you’re right

32. INT. Morgue. DAY.

TRU
I thought you might wanna know, we’re two for two today

 (Davis doesn’t reply)

Come on, Davis, you gotta admit, I saved Jensen and the world didn’t end. So it’s okay to admit that you were wrong

DAVIS
I still think that my concerns were valid. But, having said that, if I were the one reliving days, and Carrie had died on Day One, I probably would’ve done the same thing. Oh, and speaking of Carrie, um, I think it’s time we tell her the truth

TRU
About?

DAVIS
About what we do here

TRU
You don’t even know her

DAVIS
She…you know, I care about her. And I think she would be an important asset. You know, if she’d have known about Jensen, she wouldn’t have let him leave today

TRU(shaking her head)
Davis…

DAVIS
Okay. All right, I didn’t think you’d go for it, I just had to ask

TRU
I gotta go. I mean, I’m gonna be late for my study session

DAVIS
See you tomorrow

Cut to: Shot of Hudson University

33. INT. Anatomy Lab. DAY.
(As Tru enters, everyone bursts into applause and Avery comes over to hug her)

TRU
Nice to see you too, Ave

AVERY
Thank you Tru, seriously, thank you. Thank you, thank you

JENSEN
I sorta let it slip that you saved my life today, so…

AVERY
And you know, if he had died, then, well, I checked school policy, and we’d all would have gotten A’s for the semester which would have been nice too

JENSEN
Yeah…

AVERY
I’m just saying

(she walks back to their table, and Tru laughs. Then she notices Jensen holding his wrist)

TRU
Hey, are you okay?

JENSEN
Oh yeah, I just, I think I might have sprained something when you tackled me

TRU
Oh God, I’m sorry about that

JENSEN
It’s okay. Believe me when I say I prefer it to the alternative

TRU
Can I take a look?

JENSEN
Yeah, go ahead, please

(she takes his wrist and presses it gently)

JENSEN
Ooh…

TRU
What?

JENSEN
That’s weird. I’m getting this serious case of déjà vu right now

TRU
What, you feel like we’ve done this before?

JENSEN
Yeah, but like, exactly this. Me, you, the wrist, everything. That’s crazy, right?

TRU
Crazy, yeah

(he walks away, and Tru is left standing alone, looking a little nervous)
