1. INT. Tru’s bedroom. DAY.
(Tru wakes up as the radio comes on ~ “Into the Fire” by Thirteen Senses is playing)

2. INT. Jack’s bedroom. DAY.
(Jack wakes up in a similar bed, with in a much less personalized space. He awakens to the sound of a car alarm outside his window. Jack sits up in bed)

 Cut to: Tru’s bedroom.

(Tru sits up in bed, picks up the calendar from the bedside cabinet. It has pictures of beautiful landscapes on each month. She looks at it, and then rips off the page. A brand new month has obviously begun)

 Cut to: Jack’s bedroom.

(Jack picks up a simple, day-to-view calendar with “30” at the front. He rips it off, screws it up and throws it into the trash can. He puts the calendar back, now displaying “1”)

 Cut to: Tru’s bedroom.

(she gets out of bed smiling, and walks into the next room)

3. EXT. Hudson University. DAY.
 (Jensen hurries up to Tru)

JENSEN
Hey, Tru. Glad I caught up. You got a full schedule for today?

TRU
Just Chem Lab. Then the rest of the day is mine

JENSEN
That is excellent, cause I have two tickets to the Blue Spot and Scott Rogo Quintet

TRU
Ah…Jensen, I’m sorry but I hate jazz

JENSEN
Me too. Lexi’s the one that wanted to go

TRU
Oops

JENSEN
Hey, I tell you what though, I bet you we could get fifty bucks for them in the parking lot

TRU
I’ve never been scalping

JENSEN
Swing by after class

(he walks away smiling. Tru’s cellphone rings)

Cut to: Harrison

TRU (v.o)
Hey, Harr

HARRISON
Hey! Guess what? Oh right, you’ll never guess. Unless it’s day two, in which case you’re probably gonna tell me about it

Cut to: TRU
Harrison, I have class in exactly 90 seconds

Cut to: HARRISON
Fine. One of dad’s clients says his partner’s ripping him off. We got a tip the partner’s guys are moving a load of hot electronics tonight. And he needs pictures. I’m the shutter man

Cut to: TRU
It’s not dangerous, is it?

Cut to: HARRISON
Only if I screw it up

Cut to: TRU
You’re not gonna screw up, you’re gonna be great

Cut to: HARRISON
Aww…that’d mean more to me on a day two, but thanks for the effort

Cut to: TRU
Bye

Cut to: Shot of City Morgue

4. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Davis is getting a coffee from the vending machine. He looks to the doorway to see Carrie standing there, in a very short skirt and low-cut top)

CARRIE
Okay. I have waited a week, so to hell with the rules. Somebody has got to ask somebody out for a date. How about dinner?

DAVIS
Well, now? It’s 9:30 in the morning

CARRIE
Actually, I was thinking of later tonight

DAVIS
Yes. Oh, yeah, of course, yes. And yes, yes

CARRIE
Great. I’ll cook. Can we use your place, though?

DAVIS
Uh…

CARRIE
My stove refuses to co-operate

DAVIS
Okay, I just have to leave a little early to tidy up

CARRIE
I’ll see you at 7

 (she walks away)

DAVIS (quietly)
7 o clock…I should probably leave now

5. EXT. Plaza. DAY.
(A young woman is sitting with a guitar, singing. Jack is walking through the market. He notices a young, blonde woman standing watching the singing woman. He walks past casually. She notices him and smiles)

MEGAN
I’ve always wanted to learn the guitar

(Jack takes some dollar bills out of his wallet and places them in the guitar case. He starts to leave)

MEGAN
You know, I’ve seen you before. A bunch of times really. You work around here?

JACK
Uh, yeah. All over the city actually

MEGAN
I’m not stalking you. It’s just… I know this is kind of out of nowhere, but, um… (whispering) I’m playing hooky today. And I have two tickets to see this jazz quintet at the Blue Spot tonight, if you’re not too booked up, maybe you’d like to come with?

JACK
I can’t

 (she nods, disappointed)

Work’s a killer. Maybe some other time

(he walks away, leaving her standing alone)

6. EXT. Parking Lot. DAY.
(Tru and Jensen are trying to sell the tickets)

TRU (to a passing woman)
Two tickets to the jazz festival, do I hear $20? $20? No, I don’t hear $20…

(Jensen takes the tickets off her)

JENSEN
Do I hear $15? Do I hear $10?

TRU (to another passing woman)
Hey, we have the perfect date! We just have to run, but we have two tickets that we…$20? For two?

JENSEN
Seriously…$5! I’ll pay you!

TRU (to the first woman)
You’re back! No?

 (they both burst out laughing)

Cut to: Shot of the city – NIGHT

7. INT. Davis’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Carrie and Davis are sitting down to dinner)

DAVIS
You made all this in my kitchen?

CARRIE
I did. Don’t you cook?

DAVIS
Uh…I’ve made gazpacho a couple of times…but nothing like this. Mmm. This is delicious! What is this?

CARRIE
Tuna Provencal

(Davis takes off his napkin and spits the food into it)

CARRIE
What? What’s wrong?

DAVIS
Nothing… (he takes a sip of his wine) It’s just the mercury levels are kind of high, and uh…it’s probably what gives it the extra tang (he drinks more wine) The wine’s good. Yeah, that’s good wine

CARRIE
Relax. It’s just me

DAVIS
I know, I’m sorry, it’s just…I’m nervous. Nervous, because this is the first time that a woman has cooked here for me, and it’s… (he reaches across the table for the wine bottle and begins to pour more wine)

CARRIE
I totally get it. But you know maybe…tonight will turn out to be an evening…full of first times (she reaches out slowly under the table and puts her hand on his leg)

(Davis jumps, and drops the wine bottle, it spills everywhere)

DAVIS
Oh, God, I’m such an idiot, I thought it was a dog

8. INT. Harrison’s Car. NIGHT.
(Harrison is listening to the Coogan fight as he sits waiting in his car. The men come into view, packing boxes onto a truck)

HARRISON
Smile for the birdies, suckers

(he begins to take pictures, chuckling softly)

(another man walks into view, and Harrison lowers the camera, a shocked expression on his face)

Billy…

(he thinks, then opens the camera and takes the film out, wrecking it)

9. EXT. Standard Diner. NIGHT.

TRU (on her cellphone)
You’re kidding me. That’s awful Harrison, what did you do, just throw away the film?

Cut to: HARRISON
What was I supposed to do? I’ve known Billy since High School. If I didn’t have a job with Dad, I’d be doing the same thing. Loading a truck up with him

Cut to: TRU
Well what did you tell Dad?

Cut to: HARRISON
I lied. I told him that the light was bad and the shots were underexposed. Oh God, he was pissed! I don’t know if I can do it. I’m taking pictures of my friend!

Cut to: TRU
No, you’re doing great, Harrison. Look, no one ever said it would be easy

Cut to: HARRISON
Oh well it doesn’t have to be easy, Tru. I just wish it wasn’t so hard

Cut to: TRU
I know

HARRISON (v.o.)
Anyway, I gotta go

TRU
Bye

(Jensen comes out the Standard Diner with two coffees)

JENSEN
Six sugars, right?

TRU
Seven, but I’ll live

10. EXT. Street. NIGHT.
(Jack is walking alone, when he notices the girl from that morning. She is walking straight, not looking at anything, looking upset.)

11. INT. Tru’s apartment block stairs. NIGHT.

JENSEN (on his cellphone)
Oh, it’s fantastic, Avery. Thanks for calling

(he switches off and turns to Tru)

Evidently, I just won a bunch of money on the Coogan fight in the Med School pool. $10 on Montez just turned into $100

TRU
Wow!

JENSEN
Yeah

TRU
Boxing, scalping, gambling?

JENSEN
Don’t let the GPA fool you, I’m a gangster. Holler back, young’un

TRU
Whooo!

(they both laugh as they turn into the corridor)

12. EXT. Street. NIGHT.
 (Jack’s cellphone rings)

JACK
Yeah?

Cut to: CARRIE
Operation Seduce Davis did not go as planned, I don’t know, I think I may have come on too strong

Cut to: JACK
What happened?

Cut to: CARRIE
Well, I tried to let him know that I was interested in him, you know, physically

Cut to: JACK (astounded)
And he didn’t respond?

Cut to: CARRIE
No, he responded. Like I goosed him with a cattle prod

Cut to: JACK
Some guys just need a little warming up

WOMAN (screaming, off-screen)
No!

 (Jack looks over, intrigued)

JACK (to Carrie)
Call you back

CARRIE (v.o.)
Okay

13. INT. Apartment block corridor. NIGHT.

JENSEN
And I was thinking that maybe, you and I should, ah…you know, get together on Saturday

TRU
And scalp Phantom of the Opera tickets

JENSEN
Yeah, that’s exactly what I had in mind

14. EXT. Street. NIGHT.
(A crowd of people are gathered, looking down at the ground, shocked)

WOMAN
…just jumped. I’ll call 911

(Jack makes his way through the crowd and stares at the woman on the floor. It’s the young, blonde woman from that morning)

MAN
Yeah, she jumped from the very top

(Jack looks up at the building, it is very high up)

MAN
Somebody call 911

15. INT. Outside Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Tru and Jensen are leaning towards each other, about to kiss)

16. EXT. Street. NIGHT.
(Jack walks closer to the young woman. The crowd around him are murmuring anxiously. Suddenly her head moves)

MEGAN
Jack…

Cut to: Tru, who stops suddenly and looks confused

[Tru experiences flashes of images in black and white, all jumbled together. A very high building, a piece of paper falling, a guitar case with 2 dollar bills in it, a painting in a gallery, a poster advertising the Scott Rogo Quintet, a clock displaying 11:15 gradually getting further away]

Cut to: Jack, looking at Megan

MEGAN
Help me!

[Jack experiences flashes of images in sequence as the day rewinds]

17. INT. Tru/Jack bedroom. DAY.
(Camera shots a split screen, showing Tru and Jack waking up)

TRU/JACK
What the hell was that?

 [Fade to Black]
 [Opening Credits]

[Flashes of the day’s images in sequence, from Tru’s perspective this time]

18. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Davis and Tru step out the elevator)

TRU
It was different. It didn’t feel like a normal rewind at all. As bizarre as that sounds

DAVIS
So no-one asked for help, you’re sure?

TRU
There were no corpses lying around if that’s what you mean

DAVIS
Well maybe you didn’t hear it

TRU
I always hear it

DAVIS
Well, do you think maybe you died?

TRU
Okay, now you’re just creeping me out

DAVIS
Okay, what were you doing when it happened?

TRU
I was about to…

[Flashback: Tru and Jensen about to kiss]

… do something personal

DAVIS
Okay. Describe the rewind. What did you see?

TRU
Like I said, it was weird. It was just, like, random stuff. There was a painting…

[Flashback of the painting in the gallery]

there was a music poster…

[Flashback of the poster for the Scott Rogo Quintet]

there was a guitar case, there were coins…

 [Flashback of the guitar case]

and there was a $20 bill, like, in the case. It was a street performer or something, you know?

DAVIS
Well there’s always a bunch like that at Atlantic Plaza

[Flashback of the clock displaying 11:15]

TRU
That was the last thing I saw! It was the clock on the Edison Tower. It was 11:15 and the clock, it was moving away, like I was falling

DAVIS
Tru, I’m, uh…this may be a little crazy…

TRU
What?

DAVIS
Well, maybe that’s how the victim died. Falling off the Edison Tower. Maybe

TRU
There is an observation deck. But Davis, we’re not even sure there was a victim

DAVIS
Or if anyone actually died

TRU
I hate this. Right when I thought that I had the right approach to this

DAVIS
Well the rules have changed. I mean, we’re in open water now

TRU
This rewind. It felt…bad. Cold. Like part of me was dying. All I know is I never wanna feel that way again.

19. INT. Richard’s Office. DAY.

JACK
I’ve never felt anything like it

RICHARD
I don’t know what to tell you, Jack. I never heard of anything like this happening before

JACK
She asked me for help

RICHARD
Don’t get knocked off track here. Doing the right thing is always harder

JACK
But if the rules changed this time, it’s gotta be for a reason

RICHARD
Your job has always been clear. Make today end like yesterday

JACK
What the hell am I supposed to do?

RICHARD
Your job

20. INT. Outside Richard’s Office. DAY.
(Harrison is about to go in, when Tru catches him up)

TRU
Harrison, wait

HARRISON
Oh, no, no, no. It’s one of those days right, where I…I…

TRU
Relax, you don’t die or anything

HARRISON
Oh…whoo…cool

TRU
Well, I tried to call you on your cellphone, but I wanted you to know. Dad’s gonna give you some big assignment. He wants you to photograph a crime taking place

HARRISON
Very cool!

TRU
No, your friend Billy is one of the criminals and if you take the pictures he could go to jail

HARRISON
Not cool, cause if I don’t then I’m gonna be in trouble with…

 (the door opens behind him)

TRU
Dad!

RICHARD
What a pleasant surprise

HARRISON
Hey!

RICHARD
You feel all right, sweetie? You look a little tired

TRU
Well, you know how it goes, Dad. I work in a morgue. I only get a day off if death takes a day off

21. EXT. Plaza. DAY.
(The young woman is playing the guitar and singing)

JACK (on his cellphone)
Carrie, it’s Day Two and here’s the headline: your dinner tonight with Davis? Take it down a notch. Go easy. Don’t be easy. You know what I’m saying? Call me

(he hangs up and goes and stands in front of the guitar-playing woman. After a few moments, Megan joins him)

JACK
You know, I’ve always wanted to learn to play the guitar

MEGAN
Me too!

JACK
I guess we still could. It probably takes years though, right? And who’s got that kind of time

(Megan smiles at him, but doesn’t reply)

JACK
You know, um…

(he puts a $20 bill in the case)

my work threw me a curveball today and cancelled all my meetings. Do you wanna get some breakfast?

MEGAN
I think I have time for that

JACK
All right

(they begin to walk away together)

JACK (cont’d)
You strike me as a traditionalist when it comes to breakfast

MEGAN
Oh, I don’t know about that, no. I go a little crazy

(as they walk away, Tru passes them in the crowd, not noticing them. She walks up to the guitar-playing woman. She looks at the money in the case)

[Flashback: the $20 bill in the case, this part of the flashback has already happened on Day Two]

TRU
Wow, a $20. Someone must have really liked your music

MUSICIAN
Actually, he liked the girl next to him. I think he was trying to impress her

TRU
Her?

MUSICIAN
Yeah, you just missed them

(she nods in the opposite direction. Tru follows her nod and walks away)

22. EXT. Park. DAY.

MEGAN
So, it must be a great job you have, you can just show up when you want, not show up when you want

JACK
Well, I’m sort of a trouble-shooter. I try to keep things from veering off course. You?

MEGAN
I was a receptionist at St. Luke’s. Yesterday was my last day

JACK
You quit?

MEGAN
Mmhmm

JACK
So what’s next?

MEGAN
Remains to be seen. But – for today… (she reaches into her pocket) … I got a list

JACK
A list? Why do I get the feeling there’s more to this story? Would you mind if I took a look at that list?

MEGAN (laughing)
No! It’s private. Really, it’s just some stuff around town. You know how it is, you can live in Paris your whole life, and never go to the top of the Eiffel Tower

JACK
So what’s number one to do on the aforementioned list?

MEGAN
Are you inviting yourself along?

JACK
Only if I’m welcome, and only if it doesn’t involve opera or clowns

 (Megan laughs)

MEGAN
You are. And it doesn’t. I just hope you like dead ducks

23. INT. Gallery. DAY.
(Megan and Jack are standing in front of a large painting)

MEGAN
It was the last thing he ever painted. I majored in Art History, and my first big crush was on Robert Vander Krawl. I stayed up all night writing an essay on this very painting, crying the entire time. All he wanted was a normal life. A wife, family. He completed over 200 canvases by the time he was 29, and never sold a single one. He killed himself one night with poison. He was completely alone…convinced that nobody cared about him or his work, that…that he was worth more dead than alive

(she puts her hands over her eyes)

JACK
Are you crying? Are you okay?

 (Megan nods and giggles sheepishly)

TRU
Hey, Jack

(they both turn towards her as she walks up)

TRU (cont’d)
Still haven’t learned your manners
(to Megan) I’m Tru Davies

MEGAN
Megan Roberts. Nice to meet you

TRU
So what’s new, Jack?

JACK
Would you give me a minute?

MEGAN
Mmhmm, sure

(Jack and Tru step aside and walk down the corridor)

TRU
I know how you’re getting your inside information. You see the victim’s day when you rewind

JACK
Very clever girl, Tru. It only took you six months to figure that one out. Let me guess, you saw the painting?

TRU
Just my luck. This was the first museum I tried

(Jack doesn’t respond. Tru suddenly realises something)

TRU (cont’d)
She asked you for help didn’t she? Wow… so obviously there’s been some kind of sick cosmic mix-up

JACK
Maybe not. Maybe it happened this way for a reason

TRU
What are you saying? You’re gonna help her?

JACK
“Help me” doesn’t always mean “save me”

TRU
The hell it doesn’t. Why else would she ask you?

JACK
To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure yet. But this much I do know: she didn’t ask you for help which means you’ve got no business here. Unless of course, you intend to kill her

TRU
Oh, I wouldn’t wanna step on your toes

JACK
Actually, she’s gonna handle the hard part

TRU
What are you talking about?

JACK
She’s gonna kill herself. And if she doesn’t wanna live, she’s got no use for you

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images in sequence]

24. EXT. Street. DAY.

TRU (on her cellphone)
Your guess was right, Davis. Megan Roberts is definitely the victim. She jumped off the Edison Tower

Cut to: DAVIS at the morgue, in front of the computer
Okay, let’s see… Megan Roberts, 28, attended Reed College. She graduated in 1997. Currently lives here in town at 1025 Birch Lane. There’s also a Wendy Roberts, could be a sister or a mother

Cut to: TRU
I don’t get it. Why does someone who wants to die ask for help?

Cut to: DAVIS
Consider who she asked. Death himself

Cut to: TRU
Yeah, but she was already dead. What would she need from Jack?

Cut to: DAVIS
More importantly, what does she need from you?

Cut to: Shot of The Track bar

25. INT. The Track. DAY.
(Billy is sitting at the bar. Harrison walks up, he sighs apprehensively, and then goes over to him)

HARRISON
Figured I’d find you here

BILLY
Hey, man! Unbelievable

HARRISON
Hey, man, what is up, bro?

BILLY
Oh, you know, same old! We call you every Friday night, Ed Bones’ poker game, you never show

HARRISON
I know, I know, man, I’ve been crazy busy

BILLY
Yeah? What’s her name?

HARRISON
No, no, I got a job. Yeah, I got a job. I’m working for my old man

BILLY
You’re kidding! That’s great. Hey, here I thought you were too cool to hang out with us

HARRISON
No, no… (to the bar tender) Hey man, can I get two? So uh, how is everybody, man? How’s Larry doing?

BILLY
Oh, Fat Larry, man, he’s in jail

HARRISON
Oh, shut up

BILLY
No, it’s assault. He’s looking at like, eight years

HARRISON
Wow…

BILLY
So what, you came just to hang out and get faced, or what?

HARRISON
Well, you see, it’s a little hard to explain actually

BILLY
Whoa. I know why you’re here, I know that look

HARRISON
What look? What look?

BILLY
Well, the whole “I’m broke and I need some cash” sheesh, that’s what look

HARRISON
No. No, no, no, it’s not that, man, it’s…it’s…

BILLY
Chill. Chill, don’t worry, let your big brother Billy front you, all right? Check it. There’s a job, tonight. It’s boxes in the trucks. Easy peasy. Hmm? (he playfully cuffs him round the head)

HARRISON
Hmm, no, no, I got a better idea. Why don’t we get some beers, grab some pizza, we’ll go back to my place, and we’ll watch that Coogan fight, man. Yeah, we’ll just kick it old school style, man. Me and you

BILLY
No, no, don’t worry, my brother, you’re in, come on. Sit

(Harrison breathes into his fist, apprehensively)

26. EXT. Birch Lane. DAY.
(Tru walks up to Megan’s front door and knocks)

TRU
Hey. Wendy, right?

WENDY
Right

TRU
I’m Tru Davies. Megan and I used to be floor mates back at Reed. She does live here, right?

WENDY
Yeah, she does…um…so, when was the last time you and Megan talked?

TRU
It’s been mostly Christmas cards the past couple of years. Actually, I was starting to get a bit worried because she hasn’t returned my last couple of phone calls, and the one time we did speak, she sounded kind of…distant. Is everything all right?

WENDY
Look, um…why don’t you come inside? Maybe we should talk

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue

27. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Davis gets his coffee from the vending machine, and looks up to see Carrie standing there)

CARRIE
Working late?

DAVIS
Yeah, as usual

CARRIE
Yeah, me too. So I was thinking, what do you say we have dinner here together?

DAVIS
In the morgue?

CARRIE
Sure. It’ll be fun, like a picnic. Only with cold tile instead of warm sand

28. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Tru watches as Jack and Megan walk into the bar where the Scott Rogo Quintet will be playing. Jack notices her)

JACK
Hey, you go in, I’ll, um… I’ll meet you inside

MEGAN
Okay

 (Jack walks over to Tru)

TRU
I have to talk to Megan

JACK
Stay out of this, Tru

TRU
She’s dying. I spoke to her sister. She has leukaemia. So, you see, you don’t have to do anything tonight, she’s gonna die anyway

(Jack walks back towards the bar)

Did you hear me?

JACK
Yeah, I heard you

(she goes to follow Jack inside. Jack hands his ticket to the Ticket Collector, and walks through. Tru tries to follow)

TRU
Jack!

TICKET MAN
Whoa, whoa, whoa…where’s your ticket?

TRU
I don’t have one. How much are they?

TICKET MAN
We’ve been sold out for two weeks. Good luck finding any

29. EXT. Parking Lot. DAY.

JENSEN
Two tickets, I got two tickets for the jazz, anybody want two tickets?

TRU
I’ll take ‘em

JENSEN
Hey! That’s weird, I tried calling you earlier

TRU
So, how much do you want for them?

JENSEN
What, for these? Nothing, you really want them?

TRU
For us, you and me, we’ll go, it’ll be fun

JENSEN
No, no, no, I hate jazz, I don’t wanna go

TRU
Well, me too. But you know, it’s like lima beans. You have to check in every once in a while to see if your taste has changed. Come on!

30. INT. Bar. DAY.
(Jack finds Megan watching the jazz band)

JACK
Hey

MEGAN
Hey, you okay?

JACK
Yeah, yeah, sure

MEGAN
Oh…don’t tell me, you hate jazz

JACK
No, it’s not that, it’s just…um…is there maybe something going on that you’re not telling me? Because I like you Megan, and I think we’ve been having a really great day

MEGAN
Then let’s keep having it

JACK
I’d like that, but I get the feeling there’s not gonna be another one. Let’s say I told you I wanted to see you again this weekend, what would you say to that?

MEGAN
I’m not gonna be around this weekend

JACK
Where you gonna be?

MEGAN
Six months ago…I found out I have leukaemia. The doctors gave me a year. The first symptoms came on pretty quick. My sister had to quit her job last month, just to take care of me when things got bad. From here on out, it only gets worse. The good days, like today…will slowly dwindle away to nothing. The pain will get worse. Most people with this kind of leukaemia spend the last few months of their lives in a hospital bed, hooked up to machines and tubes. Completely helpless. I will not die like that. This list… it’s 10 things I wanted to do before I died. Only got around to four of them. Procrastinated until the end, I guess

(she hands him the list. He takes it)

Do the others for me, Jack. One day, I will see you again, and you can tell me all about it

JACK
This is your list. You should do these things

MEGAN
When I was in bed these last few weeks, I made a promise to myself. If I could get just one more good day, I would take advantage of it. I have an insurance policy through work, good only in case of accidental death. $100, 000. Mine’s going to my sister

JACK
And you’re gonna kill yourself?

MEGAN
Not exactly. I told you, the policy doesn’t pay on suicide

JACK
It has to look like an accident

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images in sequence]

31. INT. Bar. DAY.
(Jack and Megan are listening to the jazz, when he looks up and notices Tru and Jensen walk in)

JACK
Ah…I should have seen this coming

MEGAN
This Tru, is she an ex-girlfriend or something?

JACK
It’s a long story

TRU
Hey, you guys. What a weird coincidence. Jack, Megan, this is Jensen Ritchie

JACK
Oh hey man, I saw you at Tru’s party. How you doing?

JENSEN
Good

TRU
First the museum and now this, we should all hang out together

JACK
Or not. You wanna get a drink, Megan?

MEGAN
Yeah, that’d be great

TRU
I’ll get us something too. Why don’t you and Megan hang out and we’ll be right back

JENSEN
Okay

(Tru and Jack walk over to the bar)

MEGAN
Okay, what is it with those two?

JENSEN
I don’t know, but I’m sure it’s one hell of a story

Cut to: Tru and Jack, at the bar

JACK
She has an insurance policy. $100, 000. When she died on Day 1, everyone thought it was suicide. Tonight, it has to look like an accident. That’s the only way the policy will pay off. That’s why she asked me for help

TRU
And you’re gonna do it

JACK
She wants this, Tru. She doesn’t want to suffer through a long, slow, painful decline, and it’s her life, it’s her death. It’s her decision

TRU
I’m gonna talk to her, Jack. Whether you wanna try and stop me or not

JACK
Be my guest

(Tru watches him walk away)

JENSEN
Hey

(She turns back she bumps into Jensen, her forehead bashing into his nose)

TRU
Ooh…ow

JENSEN
Oh God…Tru, you have a really hard head

TRU
Thank you. I mean, I’m sorry. Are you okay?

JENSEN
No, I’m fine. I think…I thought you…ah…I thought you were gonna get drinks

TRU (clicking her fingers)
I totally forgot. Um, would you mind getting them for us? Look, I know this is weird, but kinda fun, in a weird way, right?

JENSEN
Not really, but…

TRU
Five minutes. I just need five minutes to talk to Megan, and then we’ll go and get some dinner. My treat

JENSEN
Okay, I’m just gonna go rinse the blood off my teeth

TRU
Fantastic idea

JENSEN
All right

32. INT. The Track. DAY.
(Billy and Harrison are drinking shots down)

BILLY
We gotta get going. I’ve gotta tell Kevin you’re on board for tonight

HARRISON
Hey, look, about tonight…skip it

BILLY
What are you talking about?

HARRISON
Yeah, hey, skip it

BILLY
No, we’re gonna make $200, $300 in like, half an hour

HARRISON
Yeah…yeah, or get nailed. Come on, you just spent the whole day telling me that half the guys we grew up with are locked up. They’re in jail! Now, Billy, you have used up about ten of your nine lives. You can’t be lucky forever. One day, things are gonna go sour, man, I just don’t want it to be tonight. Right?

BILLY
So, wait up…is that why you came by today?

HARRISON
No

BILLY
You came by to tell me to stop doing jobs, is that it? I don’t see you for three months, and suddenly you’re my parole officer?

HARRISON
No, I’m just saying…you don’t have to do it tonight

BILLY
What do you want me to do? You want me to call my daddy, just like you, huh? Maybe he can give me a job. Well, here’s the problem. My daddy lives on a bench, right across from the bus depot. All right? Last time I saw him, he asked me for a quarter, he didn’t even know who the hell I was. We gotta do this less often

HARRISON
Hey, hey, I’m trying to do you a favour, man, okay?

BILLY
Step off!

HARRISON
I’m sorry about your father, but take it from a friend. Life, it doesn’t hand you too many second chances. And you just got one. Now, trust me on this Billy! Okay? Stay home

BILLY
I’ll take it under advisement

(Harrison smiles, and watches him leave)

33. INT. Bar. DAY.
(Tru walks up and sits opposite Megan)

MEGAN
So, what’s up with you and Jack, huh? Love or hate?

TRU
I wish it were that easy. But, the two of you seem to be hitting it off, though. Have you known him a long time?

MEGAN
Just met him today

TRU
Oh, it’s funny how things can change in a day, huh? Oh, just so you know. Jack and I are not together. We never have been. So he’s fair game if you’re interested

MEGAN
I’m not really thinking long-term

TRU
Yeah, sometimes it’s more fun not to. Last year, I had someone I was real close to, and it took off fast and heavy, and then…and then…he died

MEGAN
Oh, I’m so sorry

TRU
God, I was so angry when Luc died, I…I couldn’t breathe. After a while, I realised how lucky I was…for the time I had with him. And then…and then, the craziest thing happened

MEGAN
What?

TRU
I had a great day. Right when I thought that I never would again. Sometimes, good stuff happens out of the blue, too

MEGAN
So, apparently Jack told you I’m dying. I have a life insurance policy, and I’m not planning on being around for Christmas

TRU
Look, I’m not trying to question your motives. I mean, I can’t even begin to imagine what you’re dealing with. But what if there was another way to get that money?

MEGAN
$100,000? Unless you’re a bank robber, I’d say you’re crazy

TRU
What if I could?

MEGAN
It’s not just about the money

TRU
I know. But you had a great day. I mean, we could set your Plan B in effect any time. Tomorrow, or next week, or next month. It doesn’t have to end tonight

 (Jack walks up behind Megan)

JACK
How you doing?

MEGAN
Better and better

 (Jensen arrives with two drinks)

TRU
Anyway, you guys, it was so great to see you, but I’ve gotta go

JENSEN
Right now?

TRU
Yeah, just think about what I said (she takes the drinks off Jensen and sets them down on the table) Here

JENSEN
Where you going?

TRU
To the Coogan fight

JENSEN
Oh, you’re ditching jazz to go watch boxing? Oh, I am in

TRU
Deal

Cut to: Shot of the City – NIGHT

34. INT. Harrison’s Car. NIGHT.
(Harrison is listening to the Coogan fight on the radio, as he watches the men putting boxes into the truck; Coogan is losing. Harrison watches carefully, and then Billy steps into view)

HARRISON
Damn it

(Commentator: And its official…Coogan is out)

35. INT. The Track. NIGHT.
(the man at the counter is handing over the winnings to another man)

MAN
That’s $50…$100

(Tru walks up to the counter)

TRU
Hi

(the man takes her winning ticket and puts it into the machine)

MAN
Okay, and that’s… $100,000 dollars?

TRU
I had a hunch

MAN
Ah, well, it’ll have to be in the form of a cashier’s check

TRU
Oh, that’s perfect. Could you make it out to Wendy and Megan Roberts, please?

MAN
Okay

(Jensen walks up to her, waving some money)

JENSEN
Hey, you wanna see something awesome? I just won $100

TRU
Wow, that’s great!

MAN
Okay miss, I just need to sign right here and here

JENSEN
I didn’t know you made a bet

TRU
Yeah, I did

JENSEN
How much did you win?

TRU
Um…$100, like you

JENSEN
Nice. You know, you can get that in cash

TRU
Yeah, I know, but it’s for tax purposes

MAN
There ya go

TRU
Thanks

JENSEN
You think I should have gotten mine in a check?

TRU
Oh no, cash is so much more fun

36. INT. Richard’s Office. NIGHT.
(Harrison throws the photos on his desk)

RICHARD
These are fantastic! Harrison, you just won us this case. I’m proud of you

HARRISON
Um…so what’s gonna happen to those guys?

RICHARD
Jail, most likely. Great job, son

HARRISON
Right

37. EXT. Megan’s house. NIGHT.
 (she walks up with Jack)

JACK
So how we doing on that list of yours? We’ve still got some time

MEGAN
I know. But right now, all I wanna do is see my sister. I hope she’s still awake

 (they enter the house together)

MEGAN
Wendy?

WENDY
You are not gonna believe what just happened! Your friend Tru stopped by. She just handed this to me. Some story about a special charity, the…the Relive Your Day Foundation. I mean, is this for real?

(they both look at Jack. He shrugs)

JACK
Apparently

WENDY
Do you have any idea what this means? The best doctors, the best treatments. And that trip to Greece you wanted to take!

MEGAN
Number 10 on my list!

WENDY
Well, we’re going!

 (they hug, excitedly)

WENDY
I love you so much!

MEGAN
Me, too

Cut to: Shot of Tru’s apartment block

38. INT. Tru’s apartment corridor. NIGHT.

JENSEN
Today was…how do I put this? I know, it was bizarre

TRU
I know, I’m sorry. Sometimes, my life can be a little weird

JENSEN
I noticed

TRU
But having you there made it better

JENSEN
Better?

TRU
Like, almost fun

JENSEN
Almost fun? Wow, that is a ringing endorsement. “Almost fun”. Nice!

TRU
Well, you know what I mean. You know, sometimes I can just go to dinner and see a movie and be very, very normal

JENSEN
I think maybe normal is overrated

(he leans in to kiss her)

39. EXT. Megan’s house. NIGHT.
(Jack is sitting outside on the porch. Megan comes out to join him)

MEGAN
So, one weird day, huh?

JACK
You have no idea

MEGAN
We had a long talk, you know?

JACK
You and your sister?

MEGAN
Me and Tru. She made me think about a lot of stuff. I think maybe I’ve been pretty selfish. Stupid

JACK
How so?

MEGAN
Well…I tried to make it all about the money. But now that we have it, time seems more important

JACK
I thought you didn’t want machines and tubes

MEGAN
I don’t. But like Tru said, I can always go to Plan B later. If I’ve got just a few more good days, with you… (she kisses him gently)… then I don’t wanna miss any of them. I was gonna sort of take this one-way trip tonight, but now… if you’re willing… maybe we could both go

 (Jack looks confused)

When I was a little girl, my dad worked at the Edison Tower. He would take me up to the Observation Deck, point out at the horizon and say that everything I could possibly dream of was just past that line. He’d say, just picture it – whatever your heart desires, and it’s out there just waiting for you. He died when I was 10, but…I’ve always gone back there to look out over the city and dream about the things that I want. If I look long enough, I can usually see them. Go with me tonight, Jack

JACK
And what do you think we’ll see?

MEGAN
Another day

 (they smile at each other)

MEGAN (cont’d)
I’m gonna go get my coat

(she goes back inside. Jack takes out his cellphone and dials)

RICHARD (v.o.)
Hello

JACK
She was gonna kill herself. All she wanted from me was to help her make it look like an accident

Cut to: RICHARD at his office
Congratulations. Easy day

Cut to: JACK
She changed her mind

Cut to: RICHARD
That’s not an option

Cut to: JACK
I’m not gonna kill her

Cut to: RICHARD
I’m afraid that’s not an option either. You know the rules

Cut to: JACK
Yeah. A body asks Tru for help, and I make sure they stay dead. But I’m not the one who changed the rules this time. So as far as I’m concerned, it’s dealer’s choice

Cut to: RICHARD
Jack. When fate gets messed with, there are consequences. You ready to accept responsibility for those consequences? You have to be strong, Jack, and you have to do your job

(he hangs up and slams the phone on the desk)

Cut to: Jack, who also hangs up, just as Megan comes out of the house

MEGAN
Come on. Let’s make this a night to remember

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images in sequence]

40. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Carrie is looking at a book entitled “Lord of the Rings trivia”)

CARRIE (laughing)
Okay, okay…who secretly led the Rohirrum through the mountain passes to Minas Tirith’s aid?

DAVIS
Okay, I know this…ohhh…

CARRIE
Oh, no, it doesn’t look like it!

DAVIS
Ohh….Celebrimborn…no?

CARRIE
Oh, I got you! It’s Ghan-Buri-Ghan!

 (Davis groans disappointedly)

You gotta take your punishment!

(she hands him a shot glass)

DAVIS
All right

 (his cell phone rings)

Saved by the bell!

(he goes over to answer it)

Hellooo?

Cut to: TRU
Davis?

Cut to: DAVIS
No, it’s Zoron. Of course it’s Davis

 (he and Carrie laugh)

Cut to: TRU
I need your help. Have you been drinking?

Cut to: DAVIS (he walks through to his office)
Uh… (he almost walks into the doorframe)
Just a little bit. I’m on a date with Carrie, but I’m clear headed I swear. Right here at your service, go ahead

Cut to: TRU
Well, I’ve covered all the bases with Megan and Jack, but I wanna be at the Edison Tower, just to make sure nothing goes wrong. Do you know how late the Observation Deck stays open?

Cut to: DAVIS (looking on his computer)
The Edison Tower Observation Deck stays open from…

(Carrie walks silently up to his office door, listening in)

9am to midnight

Cut to: TRU
Okay, well, I’m gonna be a little bit late to work. I’m gonna stay till they close

Cut to: DAVIS
You go, girl

TRU (v.o.)
Thanks, D

Cut to: TRU
Just take it easy on the Bartles and James, okay?

Cut to: DAVIS
Okay. Bye-bye

CARRIE (whispering)
I have to go to the little girl’s room

DAVIS
Okay

(Carrie walks back through to the other room, picks up her cellphone, and walks into the corridor. She dials)

JACK (v.o.)
Yeah?

CARRIE
Tru’s headed to Edison Tower, she wants to get there before you

Cut to: JACK, walking with Megan
Got it. Thanks

Cut to: Carrie, who hangs up and walks back into the morgue

41. EXT. Street. NIGHT.

MEGAN
Bad news?

JACK
Work. Scheduling thing

MEGAN
They always call this late?

JACK
We never sleep

MEGAN
Well, I am glad you took the day off

JACK
Yeah, me too

MEGAN
Otherwise today would have turned out very differently

(they begin to climb the steps up towards the Edison Tower)

JACK
I’ll tell you a secret. I…I hate my job

MEGAN
Then why not quit?

JACK
I’m not sure I’m strong enough

MEGAN
Oh, so you take some time off and figure it out. It’s not the end of the world

JACK
I hope not

MEGAN
You know, you’ve never told me exactly what it is that you do

JACK
I help people. Although, most of the time, they don’t realise that I am helping them, but I am. I try to make sure their lives go according to plan

MEGAN
Like a counsellor?

JACK
Yeah. Sort of like that

MEGAN
Helping people. It doesn’t sound so bad to me

(they step into the elevator and Jack presses the button)

42. EXT. Street. NIGHT.
(Tru drives up in her car outside the Edison Tower. She climbs out, and looks around)

43. INT. Edison Tower. NIGHT.
(Jack and Megan walk out onto the Deck. Jack walks half a step behind her)

MEGAN
You know what we should do? We should close our eyes, spin around, point a finger, and whatever direction it is, we go. Car, boat, train, I don’t care, first thing in the morning

JACK
That would be great

MEGAN
It’s funny…I feel like I’ve been given a second chance. You know that feeling?

JACK
Yeah, I do. Hey, Megan…your list. You should keep it now

(he reaches out to hand it to her, but the wind takes it. It flutters over the safety barrier and onto the ledge. The clock beside the ledge reads 10:55pm)

JACK
Megan, I’m sorry

MEGAN
I got it

(she begins to move towards it)

JACK
No…no, wait a second

MEGAN
Hey, it’s my list

(Megan moves to the barrier, leans over it and tries to grab the list)

JACK
Megan, wait…Megan, Megan!

(Megan slips forward over the barrier, and screams in terror. She flips over the ledge and tries to grab onto the railings. She misses them, but Jack’s hand reaches over and grabs her)

MEGAN (screaming)
Ja…! (she screams) Jack!

JACK
I got you! I got you…

MEGAN
Help me! Jack!

(the camera pans down to the ground below. A woman yells in fright)

WOMAN
Look up there!

(Tru looks up, and sees Megan dangling over the edge. She sets off at a run)

MEGAN
Jack! Help me! (she screams again) Jack!

[Flashback: Megan’s body, lying dead on the ground: MEGAN: “Jack…help me”]

MEGAN (sobbing)
Pull me up, please, Jack…please…

Cut to: Tru, pressing the elevator button urgently. She gives up, and runs for the stairs

JACK
I can’t

 (Megan gasps in terror)

JACK
I can’t, I’m not strong enough

MEGAN
Jack!

(she looks over her shoulder, sees how far the ground is below, and screams again)

Jack, please! Help me!

JACK (shaking his head)
I’m so, so sorry

MEGAN
Jack…

HELPER (running up to them)
Just hold on, man!

Cut to: Tru, she has reached the top, and runs towards them

MEGAN
Jack!

WOMAN
Somebody call 911!

Cut to: Jack’s hand, slipping away from Megan’s arm

He looks down at her, he looks distressed, she looks terrified. Then slowly, he lets go of her arm

(Megan screams as she starts to fall. The people on the Observation Deck gasp and scream in terror. Tru rushes up to the barrier beside Jack, and looks down at Megan’s body, on the ground below)

(Tru turns to Jack, angrily. Jack is backing away, looking like he is disgusted with himself)

TRU
I wish it were you

JACK
That makes two of us
