PROLOGUE

(Camera hovers over a busy Market. Dr. Thomas Burrell waits in the middle of them, waiting for somebody.)

Cut toa young man, staring over the market from a balcony. He spots Dr. Burrell and stares at him, his face showing immense hatred. He takes off his jacket and puts it over his arm, using it to conceal a gun

Cut toDr. Burrell, still looking around the market. The young man makes his way over, raises the coat and the gun, and shoots at his back. Dr. Burrell jumps, reaches around to feel his back, and brings back blood. He collapses, his cup of coffee falling as he does. A woman nearby begins to scream, attracting attention

CAPTION: - Two Hours Earlier

SEIDEL
Every cadaver has a story. Treat it with respect, and you will be privileged to learn from it. Break into groups, four to a cadaver

(Tru looks around for someone to work with, everyone seems to be moving into groups)

AVERY
Excuse me…are you the girl who answered Seidel’s trick question last week and made him look bad?

TRU
I don’t know if I made him look bad…

AVERY (over her shoulder)
Guys, this is her. (to Tru) We want you

JENSEN
Oh, how awkward. She means for our lab group. We need a fourth

TRU
And you want me?

TYLER
Oh, absolutely. You cut Seidel off at the knees, which was so hot

AVERY
Obviously, you’re brilliant, and yet because you’re auditing, you’re not gonna affect the grade curve. Tyler says that you’re the perfect woman

JENSEN
Jensen

TRU
Tru

2. INT. Class Lab. DAY.
(Tyler is working on the cadaver. Tru, Jensen and Avery sit nearby)

JENSEN (to Tru)
You’ve got a really deft hand with that duodenum. I suppose you hear that all the time though

TRU (yawning)
Thanks. Sorry, I work nights, it’s a long shift. Didn’t get much sleep

JENSEN
You must get jaded pretty quickly if you’re already yawning in a room with six dead bodies

AVERY
What is with this bag?

JENSEN
What’s wrong with the bag? It’s a gift for Lexi

AVERY (to Tru)
Jensen finally looked up from his books long enough to get a girlfriend. We were all very relieved

(she looks in the bag and brings out a bottle of perfume)

Essence of Roses

JENSEN
Essence of Roses

(Avery takes Tru’s wrist and sprays the perfume on it)

JENSEN (cont’d)
Avery, what are you doing?

AVERY
Well, I can’t put it on myself, what if I don’t like it?

JENSEN
Well I don’t need you to analyse the bouquet, I need you to tell me if it’s a gift that says that “I care about you” or if it’s a gift that says “you smell bad”

AVERY
I don’t know, I guess it depends on where she sprays it

(Tru zones out, closing her eyes and almost falling asleep)

JENSEN
Oh nice, very nice

(Tyler prods the gall bladder he has just taken out of the cadaver)

SEIDEL
That’s no way to handle a gall bladder, Mr Li!

(Tyler jumps, spins round to face Prof. Seidel, knocking the bottle of perfume off the tray. Tru jolts awake. The bottle smashes on the floor, the contents spraying over Tru)

JENSEN
Ohh, Lexi’s perfume…

(Tru looks up at Tyler)

TYLER
I’m sorry

TRU (smiling)
Hey, smells better than formaldehyde

Cut to: Shot of the campus grounds

3. EXT. Campus grounds. DAY.

HARRISON
What is that smell?

TRU
What smell?

HARRISON
It smells like roses and, uh…formaldehyde

TRU
So Harry, what’s with the camera?

HARRISON
Oh, it’s nothing. Just my first solo gig at Dad’s law firm. The training wheels are off, baby! Check it, these two guys got in a fight on the golf course, and one of them is like, filing an A&B

TRU
A&B?

HARRISON
Yeah, assault and battery charge. He claims that he was too hurt he couldn’t leave the house. Well, I happen to know that he’s a major hockey fan, and he’s got tickets to tonight’s game

TRU
So you’re gonna be there taking shots of him jumping up and down and high-fiving his friends

HARRISON
And when I lay those pictures down on Dad’s desk, he’s gonna love me. Love me!

TRU
I’m glad you two are getting along. I know how much that means to you

HARRISON
Yeah, it’s great. Here, you two are getting along, right? And, I don’t know, maybe we were just too hard on him

TRU
Maybe

Cut to: High shot of the busy streets

4. EXT. Coffee Bar. DAY.
(Davis is sitting to a table with his coffee and bagel. Carrie walks over to him with hers)

CARRIE
Hi, mind if I join you?

DAVIS
Oh, Dr. Allen. No, go ahead (he starts to stand)

CARRIE
Oh you can sit down

(Davis smoothes his hair down)

Oh, damn. I forgot to ask for sugar

DAVIS
Oh, have one of mine

(he reaches over to hand her it, his sleeve falling in his bagel)

Oh, shoot

CARRIE
Is it all right?

DAVIS
Yeah, it’s just a little wool polyester fiber

(Carrie smiles, and silence falls)

DAVIS (cont’d, awkwardly)
Did you, uh, get the memo about the fire drill?

CARRIE
No, I didn’t

DAVIS
Tomorrow afternoon. I like to warn people, because sometimes that alarm goes off at the most inconvenient times, like when you’re in the toilet or you’re elbow deep in someone’s chest cavity and…

(he breaks off, and starts eating his bagel)

CARRIE
Well, I suppose I should go back across the street

DAVIS
Okay

CARRIE
Bye

DAVIS
Bye

(he raises slightly out of his seat in politeness)

CARRIE
Oh, thanks

(she smiles and walks away)

Cut to: Davis, frowning at himself

5. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.

DAVIS
I’m just…cursed. I’m just….ohh…

TRU
I’m sure it wasn’t that bad

DAVIS
When the saints were standing around my cradle they said, “he will be able to analyze 60 kinds of bullet wounds, but when it comes to conversational skills, none”

TRU
I thought you didn’t even like small talk

DAVIS
I hate small talk

TRU
So then why would it bother you if…ah

DAVIS
What was that? What was that “ah”?

TRU
It’s just an “ah”, Davis. There’s no agenda

DAVIS
Okay…

(Tru’s cellphone rings. She answers it)

TRU
Harry?

HARRISON (v.o.)
Hey, hey, it’s me

Cut to: Harrison, coming down the stairs at the hockey game

HARRISON (cont’d)
I got those pictures

Cut to: TRU
Congratulations

Cut to: HARRISON
Yeah, yeah, it came at a price though. Guy’s got a mean right hook

Cut to: TRU
Ouch!

Cut to: HARRISON
Oh, it’s worth it, I can’t wait to show Dad

Cut to: TRU
I am so happy for you. I’ll call you later though, okay?

HARRISON (v.o.)
Yeah

TRU
Bye

(she hangs up and turns to walk into the crypt)

6. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Davis unzips the body bag on the table)

DAVIS
Yeah, about the “ah”…

TRU
Talk to her again. Find a topic you can both get excited about

DAVIS
I find that my interests don’t overlap with the rest of humanity’s

(Tru smiles. Davis picks up the report)

DAVIS (cont’d)
Okay…Thomas Burrell, MD

TRU (taking a note from his pocket)
Looks like a note he scribbled to himself

DAVIS
What is it, a grocery list?

TRU
Varden, and an arrow pointing to DSM 3

DAVIS
Oh, must be a psychiatrist

TRU
How do you figure?

DAVIS
Well, you see…

DR. BURRELL
Please…

(Tru looks down at him. His head turns towards her)

Help me!

SEIDEL
That’s no way to hold a gall bladder, Mr Li!

(Tyler jumps, spins round to face Prof. Seidel, and knocks the bottle of perfume off the tray. Tru reaches out instinctively to try and grab it: it slips from her grasp and smashes on the floor, its contents spilling over Prof. Seidel)

TRU
I am so sorry

(she grabs a cloth and starts to clear it up)

SEIDEL
I’ll thank you not to bring your feminine trinkets into the lab, Miss Davies

JENSEN (horrified)
No…

(Prof. Seidel has already turned away)

JENSEN (to Tru)
I’m so sorry…I’ll go tell him it was mine

TRU
It’s all right, but I have to go

AVERY
Is it me, or does Tru seem a little abrupt?

DAVIS (on cellphone)
Got it. Day Two. Cause of death?

Cut to TRU
Shot in the back at the Fourth Street Market

Cut to: Richard’s office

RICHARD
What’s your strategy? My daughter will be expecting you, and her track record’s been pretty good since what happened to Luc. Which, by the way, was a stretch of the rules on your part

JACK
I told you. Luc was meant as a lesson

RICHARD
Not a lesson she seems to have learnt from

Cut to: TRU on her cellphone
I am not losing this guy to Jack

Cut to: DAVIS
Well you did pretty well against him last time

Cut to: Richard’s office

JACK
That’s the point. There’s an opportunity here to take things to another level. Learn from the mistake you made with her mother

RICHARD
Marrying her?

JACK
Killing her. We know that won’t help. The ability only goes to someone else. No, Tru has to be rendered powerless. And I have an idea how we can do that

RICHARD
Who’s the victim?

Cut to: DAVIS on his cellphone
Thomas Burrell, MD. Must be a psychiatrist, his office is at 87 Third Street

Cut to: TRU
I’m going straight there. Maybe I can head him off before he goes to the Market

10. INT. Thomas Burrell’s Office. DAY.
(Dr. Burrell sits at his desk, and opens a book. The door to his office opens and Jack enters)

JACK
Hey. Sorry to bother you, but your receptionist appears to be away from her desk

DR. BURRELL
Um, well I’m sure she’ll be back in a minute

(Jack doesn’t move)

Can I…help you?

JACK
I hope so…I, um, I’ve been going through a lot of changes lately and I was thinking maybe it’s time to talk to someone about them

DR. BURRELL
Could you be more specific, Mr…?

JACK
Goodwin. Paul Goodwin

(they shake hands)

DR. BURRELL
Doctor Burrell. What do you hope to get out of therapy, Paul?

JACK
Well, I have a very high-stress job, and I wouldn’t mind learning some coping skills

DR. BURRELL
May I ask what it is you do?

JACK
Oh, you might say I’m a repo man. Some people cheat, try to hold on to what’s no longer theirs, and when that happens, I come and take it back

DR. BURRELL
Oh, I can see where that might be stressful. People must get angry with you all the time

JACK
Oh, they do. They fail to realise that what I do isn’t personal. Laws are there for a reason. Someone has to say no

DR. BURRELL
Hmm. Well, Tuesday at 5:00 for a beginning?

(the telephone begins to ring)

JACK
Great!

DR. BURRELL
Good

(the telephone continues to ring)

DR. BURRELL (cont’d)
Oh, excuse me. I’ll be right back. I don’t know where Jan’s gone

(Dr. Burrell leaves the room. Immediately, Jack picks up his briefcase and takes out a file. He goes over to Dr. Burrell’s filing cabinet)

DR. BURRELL (off-screen)
This is Dr. Burrell, may I help you? Oh, I see. And who made the referral?

(Jack finds a place and slips the file in)

DR. BURRELL (off-screen)
Oh thanks, I’m ready. No, that shouldn’t be a problem at all, I’ll just lighten my caseload

(Jack walks over to Dr. Burrell’s appointment book, flips back a few pages and writes “Tru Davies” in an empty slot. He flips forward a couple of pages and writes “Tru Davies” in another slot. Quickly, he puts the appointment book and pen back where they were, just as Dr. Burrell enters again)

JACK
Hi, you know what, I gotta run. Tuesday at 5, right?

DR. BURRELL
That’ll be fine

JACK
Great. Oh, I should mention, I’ve got an ex-girlfriend who’s just a little Fatal Attraction. She cornered my last shrink with a lot of questions that were none of her business, claimed the doctor was in some sort of “danger”. She was just trying to invade my privacy, know what I’m saying?

DR. BURRELL
No, no, I can promise you, I take doctor-patient confidentiality very seriously

JACK
I figured that. Thanks, Doc

DR. BURRELL
See you Tuesday

11. EXT. Street

(Dr. Burrell comes out his office with his briefcase, and walks over to a taxi. Tru runs out of the next door café)

TRU
Dr. Burrell!

(the taxi drives away)

JACK
Oh, you’re too late. The good doctor just left

TRU
How do you know these things?! How do you get to the victim before I do?

JACK
Does Apple tell Microsoft?

TRU
We’re not business rivals. This is about people’s lives, Jack

JACK
Our business is people’s lives, Tru

TRU
Nice try Jack, but I’m not gonna stand here arguing with you, because I’ve got a job to do

JACK
Love the perfume

TRU
See you

12. EXT. Fourth Street Market. DAY.
(Camera pans across the market, brightly coloured stalls, balloons and lots of people. Dr. Burrell stands somewhere in the middle, looking around. The young man on the balcony stares down at him, his face showing immense hatred.)

Cut to: Tru walks into the market, looking around

Cut to: the young man, wrapping his jacket around his gun

Camera switches between Tru, looking around for Dr. Burrell, and the young man, walking slowly towards his target

 Tru finally spots Dr. Burrell

TRU
Dr. Burrell?

DR. BURRELL
Yes?

TRU
I need to talk to you, it’s an emergency. Would you mind coming with me?

DR. BURRELL
Coming where?

TRU
I can’t talk about it here, but please, it’ll only take a few minutes

(Camera shot of the gun being raised behind Dr. Burrell)

DR. BURRELL
No, I suggest if you want a talk with me, you make an appointment with my office

TRU
No, there isn’t time…

(There is a sharp POP, and Dr. Burrell slumps forward)

Dr. Burrell?

(A woman police officer looks over and holds up her badge)

GOMEZ
Police!

(a crowd is gathering around Tru and Dr. Burrell; Jack forces his way through)

JACK
My God! She killed that man!

TRU
No, I…I…

GOMEZ
Hands in the air. You’re under arrest

13. EXT. Fourth Street Market. DAY.
(Detective Gomez puts handcuffs on Tru)

TRU
I didn’t do it! Someone shot him in the back and they’re getting away right now!

JACK
They were arguing. She shot him when he turned to walk away from her

TRU
What?!

BYSTANDER
It did look like that

TRU
I was only talking to him!

GOMEZ
Ma’am, your name would be?

BYSTANDER

14. EXT. Alley. DAY.

15. EXT. Café Table. DAY.
(Harrison is sitting alone. His cellphone rings)

HARRISON
Tru, what’s the deal? I thought you were supposed to be the responsible one

(he listens for a second)

Handcuffs?

16. EXT. Alley. DAY.
(Tru sits in Harrison’s car as he works on her handcuffs)

HARRISON
Hey, no problem. I see this all the time. If you find yourself in this predicament again, a good penknife to get you out (he holds it up)

TRU
I don’t usually carry a penknife

HARRISON
Well, any sharp blade’ll do

TRU
How many times have you been in these? (he starts to answer) You know what? Don’t answer that

(she picks up her cellphone. Harrison breathes in sharply)

HARRISON
What’s that smell?

Cut to: DAVIS answering the phone at the Morgue

Cut to: TRU
I’m in trouble. I tried to stop the murder, but things didn’t go well. I need to see you

Cut to: DAVIS
I would advise against that

(he moves across to the doorway and looks out: there are several cops there)

Cut to: TRU
Are there by any chance cops there?

Cut to: DAVIS
That would be correct

(one of the cops looks over at him suspiciously)

And I’m sorry that we won’t be seeing each other today

Cut to: TRU
I got to him too late, Jack was there

(a siren sounds on the next street)

He set me up. It all happened so quickly. I was just standing there listening to him lie to the police and so I got out of Dodge

Cut to: DAVIS
Um, sometimes situations like this can have a legal solution

Cut to: TRU
You want me to turn myself in?

Cut to: DAVIS
No

(he looks across to the doorway, the cop is standing right there)

Cut to: TRU (she covers the phone and speaks to Harrison)
I think he wants me to talk to Dad

HARRISON
Well he’s got a point, Tru. Dad’s a criminal defence lawyer, this is what he does

TRU (to the phone)
Okay, message received. I’d better go. Call you later

Cut to: DAVIS
Okay

COP
Who was that?

DAVIS
Oh it was my, uh, contractor. He’s working on my bathroom and he said he would have it ready today, but…

COP
They never show up

Cut to: Shot of Richard’s office high-rise building

17. INT. Richard’s Office. DAY.
(Harrison enters, bringing Tru inside. She walks over and hugs her father)

HARRISON
Dad, something happened…

RICHARD
I know, the police were here. Come sit with me

(Tru walks over and sits down. Harrison sits by the desk)

RICHARD (cont’d)
Honey, you’re gonna have to tell me everything. Son, would you mind waiting outside?

TRU
No, Dad, it’s okay

RICHARD
Harrison

, please

HARRISON
Sure…yeah…outside

(he walks slowly over to the door, and shuts it behind him)

TRU
Dad, this is all a setup. I didn’t do it

RICHARD
You should know the police have already begun investigating you. They found your name in the Doctor’s appointment book for several therapy sessions so you know you were his patient

TRU
I wasn’t his patient!

RICHARD
They also found a file with your name on it in his office

TRU
I never even met this man before he was killed

RICHARD
A number of witnesses said that they saw you having some sort of an argument with this man. What was that about, by the way?

TRU
Look, I never even had a gun when I was arrested, doesn’t that mean anything?

RICHARD
Plenty of prosecutions go ahead without the murder weapon. A place that crowded, hundreds of people trampling through the crime scene, anyone could have kicked it, anyone could have picked it up. The police will not see that as significant, especially because they have a witness

TRU
Yeah, and this witness is the man that framed me! His name is Jack Harper, he’s been looking for a way to bring me down!

RICHARD
Why would he want to do that?

TRU
Because we have this past, Dad. It’s complicated

(Richard says nothing. Tru stares at him)

Dad, why did ask Harrison to step outside?

RICHARD
Because I thought you might have something to tell me, that you wouldn’t want him to hear

(Tru stares at him in disbelief)

TRU
I have to go

RICHARD
Tru?

18. EXT. Richard’s Office Building. DAY.
(Harrison is waiting outside in the street. Tru walks over to him)

TRU
He thinks I’m guilty

HARRISON
No, you just misunderstood him

TRU
Harry, he believes that I killed someone, that I’m a murderer. He must’ve had his mind made up before I even got there. I was stupid to expect that just because he’s my father…I’m on my own in this

HARRISON
No, look, you are not on your own, okay? You’ve got me. Look, I’m not some hotshot lawyer, okay? But I know people. I know a guy who can get us some fake I.D.s, passports. We can go to Mexico, Thailand

(Tru chuckles)

Really! I’ll find a job. You can look for an opening at a Morgue. There’s dead people all over the world, right?

TRU
I don’t think it’ll work, but thank you. Come on, let’s go

19. INT. Richard’s Office. DAY.

RICHARD
Good job

JACK
It is the humanitarian approach. What harm could she do behind bars for the next 50 years? Okay, so she could save a few felons, I’ll give her that

RICHARD
Did you know that when the guillotine was invented, the idea came from a physician? Dr. Guillotin. He thought that was humanitarian too

JACK
Well it was quick

20. EXT. Street

. DAY.

TRU (on her cellphone)
Are you sure you can talk?

Cut to: DAVIS at the morgue
Yeah, yeah go ahead

Cut to: TRU
Usually if a day were this bad, I’d wanna do it over, except I’m doing it over already

Cut to: DAVIS
Well Burrell’s body got here about half an hour ago

Cut to: TRU
Okay, you’ll find a piece of paper on the body. And there’s a note scribbled, “Varden” and “DSM 3”. Yesterday, you knew he was a psychiatrist just from what you found on the body, how is that possible?

Cut to: DAVIS
It must be the “DSM 3”, that’s the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Disorders. It’s kind of the bible of psychiatric diagnosis. It’s kind of weird though, because the third addition was replaced by number four back in the 90s. Is any of this helping you, or…?

Cut to: TRU
I wish I could say it was

Cut to: DAVIS
Because I have this crazy idea I guess

Cut to: TRU
Right now, I am so open

Cut to: DAVIS
Well if you can get in contact with Burrell’s body, he might ask for help again? And that way your day could restart, and you can get yourself out of this mess. It’s a long shot but it may be the only shot we have. The problem is that there’s still way too many police here

Cut to: TRU
If I can’t get to the body, maybe you could bring it to me?

Cut to: DAVIS
Well, I find that cadavers tend to get noticed in public

Cut to: TRU
Yeah well, I know one place where they’re old news. The anatomy lab on campus, it should be empty this time of day. I’ll meet you there

Cut to: DAVIS
Okay

(he hangs up)

Cut to: HARRISON
Yeah, and fleeing to Thailand was a crazy idea

TRU
Look, I can do this on my own. They’ll be searching for my car. Lend me yours?

HARRISON
I’m driving

Cut to: Shot of the Campus grounds

21. INT. Anatomy Lab. DAY.
(Jensen is alone in the room, working on a cadaver. Tru walks into the room)

JENSEN
Hey

TRU
So, some alone time with Mr. Gorenstein?

JENSEN
Yeah, I’m just reviewing this morning’s work. What about you?

TRU
Me? Same thing

JENSEN
Yeah? Pull up a stool

TRU
Wouldn’t you rather pull up a stool at the coffee shop, say?

JENSEN
Are you asking me out for coffee?

TRU
No, I’m just confused is all. I mean, you seem like the last person in our class who’d need to review. I mean, you’re brilliant. You graduated college early, Master’s in chemistry. Teacher’s are already impressed with you, so take a break

JENSEN (smiling)
Did Avery tell you that in the two minutes it took me to get sponges this morning?

TRU
Maybe

JENSEN
Yeah. It’s not the professors I really need to convince. You ever heard of the Bettendorf Clinic?

TRU
Sure, right up there with the Mayo and Johns Hopkins

JENSEN
Yeah, well my dad’s kind of their poster child. Some people say he’s the top diagnostician in the country

TRU
Hard to live up to

JENSEN
Yeah, yeah…no, besides from the inhumanly high standards, uh, he’s kind of like Martha Stewart, you know? And I just keep folding the napkins wrong

TRU
I know what you mean. I never know what my dad’s gonna be. Which is why there’s no point in being here on a nice day trying to impress these guys

(she looks over Jensen’s shoulder, through the door and sees Detective Gomez in the corridor)

TRU (cont’d)
Um…

JENSEN
Tru?

TRU
Look, I’m in trouble, and I can’t explain why, but I need you to trust me and just don’t tell anyone I’m here

(she slips under the sheet on the trolley and lays down, underneath the top tier)

JENSEN
Tru? What are you…what are you doing? Tru? Hey, Tru? Is there something I should know here? Tru?

(he looks towards the doorway, Detective Gomez walks in)

GOMEZ
I’m Officer Gomez. Maybe you can help me, I’m looking for a Tru Davies?

(Camera closing in on Jensen, who looks very nervous)

Cut to: Shot of Tru on the lower shelf of the trolley

 [Fade to Black]

[Flashes of the day’s images in sequence]

22. INT. Anatomy Lab. DAY.

GOMEZ
I understand Miss Davies audits class in here?

JENSEN
Uh, yeah. In the morning she does…but it’s over now

GOMEZ
So you’re acquainted with her?

JENSEN
Yeah, she’s a medical student. She’s in my anatomy class

GOMEZ
What can you tell me?

(she walks up to Mr. Gorenstein the cadaver and lifts the sheet)

JENSEN
Um, may I ask why it is that you’re looking for her?

GOMEZ
She’s wanted for questioning in regard to a murder

JENSEN
Oh, so you’re looking for her as a witness

GOMEZ
We’d just like to speak with her

(she sniffs the air)

What’s that smell?

JENSEN
Oh, that’s perfume. I dropped the bottle. It was a gift for my girlfriend. What do you think?

GOMEZ
I think it’s a little strong

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue

23. INT. Morgue Corridor. DAY.
(Davis pushes the trolley with Thomas Burrell’s body on it towards the elevator. Two cops are standing beside it – Davis moves backwards and pushes the trolley in another direction, towards another elevator. He presses the button, as the cops follow him down the corridor)

COP 1
Excuse me

DAVIS
Hi, can I help you?

COP 2
Mind if we check that?

(They move round the trolley and unzip the bag. It’s Thomas Burrell)

COP 1
Wait right here

(he takes out his cellphone and dials)

24. INT. Anatomy Lab. DAY.
(Detective Gomez’ cellphone rings)

GOMEZ
Gomez here….he did? No…I want to question him myself, make sure he doesn’t leave

(to Jensen) I have to go. Here’s my card, you can reach me at that number anytime

(Jensen takes it, and clears his throat, nervously)

Was there something you wanted to tell me?

Cut to: Tru, lying very still

Cut to: JENSEN
Just that if I hear anything, I’ll call you

(she walks away)

JENSEN
Tru, what the hell is going on?!

TRU
Thank you! Just…thank you. You did the right thing…hopefully, I’ll be able to explain this to you someday, or that I won’t have to

JENSEN
Tru. what are you….?

(Tru has already ran out another door)

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue

25. INT. Davis’s office. DAY.
(Davis sits at his desk. Two officers are in the room with him, glaring at him. Detective Gomez walks into the room)

GOMEZ
Thanks, officer. Mr Davis…

DAVIS
It’s actually just Davis

GOMEZ
Why don’t we have a little chat?

26. EXT. Woods. DAY.
(Tru is hiding in the trees, on her cellphone. Harrison walks over to her)

HARRISON
Tru! Tru, you gotta get back to the car. The cops are looking for you, you can’t stay in one place too long

TRU
Where the hell is Davis? He didn’t show up with the body, and he’s not answering the phone

27. INT. Davis’s Office. DAY.
(Davis’s cellphone is sitting on his desk. Davis picks it up, looks at it, and clicks it off. Then he puts it in his pocket)

GOMEZ
May I?

(Davis reluctantly hands the phone over. Detective Gomez clicks onto speed dial, Tru’s number is first. Detective Gomez dials it, and the officer behind her picks up the tracer)

Cut to: TRU
Davis

, what’s going on?

Cut to: GOMEZ
It’s Detective Gomez, Miss Davies. Guess what? You’re number one on your boss’s speed dial. You need to think about turning yourself in. You’re an intelligent woman, I’m sure you see you’re only getting yourself deeper in trouble. Now your friends, too

COP 2
Triangulating

Cut to: TRU
Detective, I didn’t kill that man

HARRISON
Hang up the phone

Cut to: GOMEZ
That man was a good human being, Miss Davies. I was meeting him today because he told me about you

Cut to: TRU
What?!

Cut to: GOMEZ
He wanted to discuss a patient

Cut to: TRU
I was never his patient

HARRISON (whispering, urgently)
Tru, they can trace the call

Cut to: COP 2
It’s down to a 12-block radius

GOMEZ
Your name was in his book. You were seen arguing with him, and you wanna tell me you didn’t know him? Do yourself a favour and surrender. Let your lawyer do the talking

(Tru hangs up the phone. Gomez looks at the cop behind her, he shakes his head)

28. EXT. Woods. DAY.

HARRISON
Gimme that! (he takes Tru’s phone off her and gives her his phone) Look, you keep this. I got a work phone in the car

TRU
What are you gonna do with mine?

HARRISON
I’m gonna drive away from here, I’m gonna make an open call, and throw it in the back of a truck. If there’s one thing I know, it’s sneaky. What about you?

TRU
Well, Davis got busted so there’s no rewind coming. Now all I’ve got is a note from the doctor’s pocket. “Varden” and “DSM 3”

HARRISON
So?

TRU
Hey, can you do one more sneaky thing for me before you go? I need you to steal a book from the medical library

HARRISON (smiles)
No problem

29. INT. Davis’s Office. DAY.

GOMEZ
You two stay here and keep an eye on our friend. Watch in case Miss Davies returns. You never know

DAVIS
Detective, as I’ve told you, I was taking Dr. Burrell’s body down to the security crypt. Generally, that is where we keep high profile cases. I thought it was a good idea at the time, because the suspect was a morgue employee. And yes, Miss Davies is on my speed dial, but so is “Funky Chicken” and “Charmed Pizza”, as well as three other morgue workers. Now, you’ve got your body. I have a morgue to run. Excuse me

(he walks out of his office and into the morgue, leaving the detective and two officers staring after him)

Cut to: Davis, out of his lab coat and into his jacket, going into the elevator. Once in there, he sighs heavily in relief

30. EXT. Library. DAY.
(Harrison hands over a book with DSM-III written on it)

TRU
Oh, thank you so much, Harry. I really appreciate it

(Harrison holds up a piece of paper in front of her)

HARRISON
And a little bonus for you

(Tru looks at it: it’s a Campus Security Alert – “Wanted, Tru Davies”)

HARRISON (cont’d)
Tru, you watch yourself. They’re handing these out to everyone who passes through Union

TRU
Thanks

31. EXT. Coffee Bar. DAY.
(Carrie gets her coffee from the vender, and turns to see Davis)

DAVIS
Hi, do you mind if I join you?

CARRIE
No, go right ahead

(they sit at an empty table)

CARRIE (cont’d)
Oh…damn, I forgot to ask for sugar

DAVIS
I wanted to discuss patient-therapist confidentiality

CARRIE
Oh…Davis, as a psychologist I’m employed by the city, but I would certainly respect anything that you might have shared during your evaluation

DAVIS
Oh, I’m being hypothetical, I’m…I’m writing a book

CARRIE
Are you really? Wow! Hands-on professional and a man of words, all in one package. Tell me you can do laundry and we’ll run away together

DAVIS
Under what circumstances is it ethical to discuss a patient with the police?

CARRIE
Well, the laws vary from state to state, but basically when there’s immediate threat

DAVIS
And knowledge of a past crime wouldn’t be enough?

CARRIE
Only if that knowledge contributes to your belief that there’s immediate threat

DAVIS
And past crime can help predict future behaviour

CARRIE
You are a man of many surprises, Davis. What’s the book about?

DAVIS
Hmm?

32. EXT. Campus. DAY.
(Tru’s (Harrison’s) cellphone rings)

TRU
Hello?

Cut to: DAVIS

at the morgue
Hey, it’s me. Harrison gave me your number. He said something about putting your phone in the back of a pizza delivery truck?

Cut to: TRU
Oh God Davis, it’s so good to hear your voice. Are you all right?

Cut to: DAVIS
Yeah I’m fine, don’t worry about me. Did you find anything else about the doctor’s note?

Cut to: TRU (walking away from the campus alley into the center of campus)
No, and the word’s spreading. I don’t know how much time I have left

Cut to: DAVIS
Well, we still don’t know what Varden means. But if it is the killer’s name, and he is a patient, he probably will be in Burrell’s files

Cut to: TRU

(A group of students pass her, staring in shock)

TRU
I’ve thought of that. But, Davis, breaking into the man’s office? That’s risky. And the police could still be there. And if Varden’s not in the files, then it was all for nothing

Cut to: DAVIS
Well, not necessarily. I’ve been speaking with Carrie. You need to search for someone the doctor would assume would present an immediate danger. Someone with a violent background

Cut to: TRU
Well I can’t sit there all night going through the files

Cut to: DAVIS
Maybe you’re right

Cut to: TRU
I guess we’re gonna have to hope the right one is somewhere near the top

Cut to: DAVIS
Well there’s just one more thing. Unless, you know, you have a background as an international jewel thief, that I don’t know about I don’t see you just waltzing into a locked office

Cut to: TRU
Does the morgue still have Burrell’s personal effects?

Cut to: DAVIS
I see where you’re going with this

Cut to: TRU
Talk to you later

Cut to: Davis flipping through the envelopes marked “personal effects” until he pulls out the one marked “Burrell, T”

33. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(An officer is sitting reading the newspaper opposite Davis. The main door opens, and Harrison walks in)

HARRISON (on his cellphone)
I’ll be right there

(he walks into the office, wearing a security delivery man’s helmet and uniform)

HARRISON (cont’d)
Hey, messenger
(to the officer) How’s it going?
(to Davis) Package going to County Records?

DAVIS (handing it over)
Yeah, make sure it gets there quickly

HARRISON
Trust me, I got it

(he walks out of the room. The officer stares after him, then looks at Davis)

Cut to: Harrison walking out of the corridor towards the elevator. As he steps into it, he opens the envelope and empties the contents into his hands. Grinning, he grasps the keys tightly

34. EXT. Dr. Burrell’s Office. NIGHT.
(Harrison hands the keys to Tru)

TRU
You really came through today, Harry

HARRISON
I’m good with emergencies. It’s that day-to-day stuff I can’t hack

TRU
Oh, yesterday you were at a hockey game right about now…taking those pictures you wanted for Dad, I’m sorry

HARRISON
This is more important. We stick together, sis! And that way Dad can be disappointed at both of us

(Tru kisses him on the cheek)

HARRISON (embarrassed)
Okay, uh, well just get out of here! I’ve got my work phone. If any cops even think about showing up, I’ll call you

(Tru heads towards the steps)

35. INT. Dr. Burrell’s Office. NIGHT.
(Tru puts the key into the lock and enters the room. She cautiously switches on a light)

36. EXT. Dr. Burrell’s Office. NIGHT.
(Harrison hears bottle clinking, and dogs barking. He walks over to investigate)

HARRISON
Tru? Tru?

(Jack steps out of the shadows)

JACK
Harrison

(he punches him round the face, knocking him to the ground. Harrison groans on the floor, Jack picks up the phone Harrison dropped during his fall and walks away)

37. INT. Dr. Burrell’s Office. NIGHT.
(Tru opens a filing cabinet draw)

TRU (under her breath)
Varden…Varden…

(she flips through the “V”’s, and then takes out a bundle of the files. Switching on the desk lamp, she places them on the desk. Her eyes flick over the things on the desk, and she notices a book entitled “DSM-III”. She thinks for a moment, then moves back over to the filing cabinet. She opens the draw marked M, and flips through the files. She takes one out marked, Mitchell, Donald.S III)

TRU
Donald Stuart Mitchell the third. DSM-3

(she opens the file and reads)

“Violent tendencies. Narcissistic personality, sense of entitlement. Possible involvement in the disappearance of girlfriend Grace Varden”

(the door opens and Detective Gomez enters, her gun pointed at Tru)

GOMEZ
Looks like my tip was right

TRU
Detective, listen to me. I’m holding the killer’s file in my hands right now. Donald Stuart Mitchell. He’s the patient Dr. Burrell wanted to talk to you about. He must’ve found out what the doctor was gonna do…oh my God…if he was at the market early enough and saw you two talking, he’ll wanna kill you too

GOMEZ
Put the folder down. You’re not doing yourself any good

TRU
Listen to me. He’ll wanna kill you too, if he thinks you know he killed Grace Varden

GOMEZ
Grace Varden?

(A gunshot fires. Detective Gomez falls to the floor. Donald Stuart Mitchell enters the room, brandishing his gun)

MITCHELL
Thanks…I think that file’s mine

(he takes it from Tru)

Oh, relax, I’m not gonna kill you

TRU
No. Because the police will only look for another shooter. This way I’m the end of the trail. I go to prison for two murders

MITCHELL
And one a cop killing

TRU
I’ll tell them the truth

MITCHELL
Oh, feel free to tell them whatever you want. Because without this file, it just becomes a story you made up. It’s too bad the circumstances aren’t a little different. Because you…are a lot prettier than Grace was

(Mitchell backs out of the room. Tru runs over to Detective Gomez, just as Harrison walks in)

HARRISON
Jack…he decked me

(he notices the scene in front of him. Tru looks up at him)

TRU
Sorry, Harry. There’s nothing left to do

(Detective Gomez opens her eyes. Tru sits up)

GOMEZ
Help me!

[Flashes of the day’s images as it rewinds]

38. INT. Anatomy Lab. DAY.

SEIDEL
That’s no way to handle a gall bladder, Mr Li!

(Tyler spins round, knocking the bottle of perfume off the tray. Tru reacts instinctively, and reaches down to catch it. This time she does. She gives it to Jensen)

JENSEN
Thank you

TRU (meaningfully)
Thank you

 [Fade to Black]

[Flashes of the rewind-day’s images in sequence]

39. INT. Anatomy Lab. DAY.

TRU
Thank you. Really

(Jensen and Avery stare at her, open-mouthed)

But I really have to go

(She removes her lab coat and picks up a scalpel from the tray)

JENSEN
Why are you taking that?

TRU
I don’t have a penknife

(she leaves the room)

AVERY
Is it me, or does Tru seem a little…abrupt?

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue

40. INT. Morgue. DAY.

DAVIS (on his cellphone)
Day Three?!

Cut to: TRU (walking away from campus)
And two lives to save

Cut to: DAVIS
Okay well what I can find is that Grace Varden was a coed who disappeared three years ago. Now the cops think that she was a murder victim, but there’s no evidence of what became of her. They never found her body. And her family of course is devastated, but they have no idea what happened to her

Cut to: TRU
I have to make another call. Are you clear on what I need you to do?

Cut to: DAVIS
Got it

Cut to: TRU
Okay

(she hangs up, and dials again)

Cut to: HARRISON in his car
Hey, sis. I’m on my first solo gig, for Dad

Cut to: TRU
No time. It’s a rewind day, so listen up. Yesterday, I was arrested for murder, you got decked by Jack

Cut to: HARRISON
Whoa, I was what?!

Cut to: TRU
Never mind. Today I’m gonna do things differently. Only problem is, Jack’s gonna do things differently too. He’s bound to throw a curveball where we least expect it. So here’s what I need you to do

41. EXT. Fourth Street Market. DAY.
(Camera pans over the market, its packed with people. Tru walks through the crowd, looking. She spots Dr. Burrell)

TRU
Dr. Burrell? You’re here to meet Detective Gomez

DR. BURRELL
Yes. Couldn’t she make it? Are you with the police?

Cut to: Shot of Donald Stuart Mitchell on the balcony, watching Tru and Dr. Burrell

Cut back to Tru and Dr. Burrell

TRU
There’s reason to believe that you are in immediate danger from one of your patients, Donald Stuart Mitchell. We think he’s here in the market. If you’ll go with this man, he’ll take you somewhere safe

(Davis moves towards them slightly)

DR. BURRELL
Thank you

(he walks away with Davis)

42. EXT. Street

. DAY.
(Jack walks out of a store, and immediately gets floored by a punch. Harrison leans over him)

HARRISON
That was for yesterday! … I think

Cut to: Tru, walking round the market place, looking around. Mitchell walks down from the balcony, his gun wrapped in his jacket

Cut to: Harrison and Jack

JACK
Harrison, Harrison, get out of the way, your sister’s in danger

HARRISON (stopping him getting past)
Oh, whoa, right, coming from you? I don’t think so! You got two targets today. You’re just trying to make sure that that cop dies!

JACK
The killer thinks your sister IS the cop, don’t you see? He saw her talking to the doctor, your sister is the target!

Cut to: Mitchell, walking through the market, with Tru in his sights

Cut to: Harrison and Jack

HARRISON
Wouldn’t that make you happy?

JACK
No! Because Tru didn’t die yesterday, she’s not supposed to die today. Look, whatever you think of me, I don’t care, but do you really want to take a chance with your sister’s life?

(Harrison steps aside, and Jack runs towards the market)

43. EXT. Fourth Street Market. DAY.
(Tru looks around, and spots Detective Gomez. She walks towards her, Mitchell follows.)

Camera slows to slow-motion

Cut to: Jack, walking towards Tru

Cut to: Mitchell raising the gun towards Tru

Camera goes back to normal, as Jack leaps forward and pushes Tru to the ground

TRU
What are you doing?!

JACK (holding her down)
I’m saving your life. Officer! Help!

GOMEZ (running over)
Police! Nobody move!

TRU
Jack!

JACK (still holding her down)
Watch this, the detective’s all mine

(to Mitchell) Hey, that’s Detective Gomez, she’s the one you want

Camera slows to slow-motion again as Mitchell raises his gun towards Detective Gomez

Camera returns to normal, as Detective Gomez brandishes her own gun

GOMEZ
Drop it!

(Tru kicks Jack hard and he releases his grip on her. She sits up, takes the scalpel from her pocket and stabs it into the back of Mitchell’s leg. He yells in pain)

GOMEZ (putting handcuffs on Mitchell)
You’re under arrest for the murder of Grace Varden

44. EXT. Fourth Street Market. DAY.
(Mitchell is put into an ambulance on a stretcher, with the injury to his leg. Detective Gomez and Tru stand outside it)

GOMEZ
I have a feeling Grace Varden’s family will finally be getting some closure. Thank you

(they shake hands, and the Detective walks away. Harrison walks up to Tru)

HARRISON
Well, it’s been a…well; it’s been confusing as usual. I gotta get out of here. I got a job to do. Those incriminating photos don’t take themselves

TRU
Enjoy the hockey game. Oh, and watch out for a sudden right hook

45. EXT. Coffee bar. DAY.

DAVIS
I just never thought I’d know anybody that was on the lam

TRU
Yeah well it’s more fun in the movies when you’re with Cary Grant or Matt Damon

DAVIS
Yeah. But you just had Harrison and me

TRU
Oh Davis, please, you guys were the best accomplices a girl could want

(they walk over to the condiment table with their coffees)

CARRIE
Hey Davis

DAVIS
Oh, hi

CARRIE
I’m so absent-minded I was halfway up in the elevator before I realized I forgot to get any sugar

DAVIS (handing her the pot)
Oh, here

CARRIE
Thanks

DAVIS
Sure

(he drops the pot on the floor, and kneels down to pick it up)

TRU
Hi. Tru

CARRIE
Hi. Carrie. I’ve seen you around

(Davis resurfaces, putting the pot on the table)

CARRIE (cont’d)
So, um…seen any good cadavers lately?

DAVIS
Uh, yeah, actually I have. This guy came in and his entire intestinal system, it was orange…

(Tru clears her throat)

TRU
Davis

, she was kidding

DAVIS
I…I was too, I was like…joking around and stuff

CARRIE
I should get back. (to Tru) Bye

TRU
See you

CARRIE (to Davis)
Bye

DAVIS(calling after her)
Enjoy the sugar

(Carrie crosses over the road and Davis holds his head in his hands)

DAVIS
Enjoy the sugar…God! My complete ineptitude

TRU (playfully)
You like her

DAVIS
No, I don’t! … yeah, uh, maybe, I dunno. Is there a Day One for this?

TRU
Didn’t go well

DAVIS
Day Two?

TRU
Don’t know, I was too busy to talk

DAVIS (sighing)
It probably didn’t go very well. I don’t know, there’s some kind of weird connection I have, though. I’m probably full of myself

TRU
Well as a henchman in my underworld gang, you were the best

46. INT. Hudson University. DAY.
(Tru walks towards the Anatomy Lab, when Jack speaks from behind her)

JACK
I don’t know what happened to etiquette

(Tru turns around)

JACK (cont’d)
It’s been a week! You don’t call, you don’t write…Don’t people still say thanks when someone saves their lives?

TRU
I would thank you, if you hadn’t been setting up Detective Gomez to die at the same time. Oh, and then there’s that whole framing for murder part

JACK
Ahh, you take things too personally, Tru. A word of advice, this Med School thing is a nice dream, but you can’t have both worlds. As long as you do what you do, you don’t belong in there

TRU
My advice to you? Work on being a gracious loser

(Tru walks into the Anatomy Lab, where Tyler, Jensen and Avery are waiting for her)

AVERY
Tru!

47. INT. Anatomy Lab. DAY.

AVERY
Ok Tru’s here, she can tell you that I was right about the metatarsals

JENSEN
You’re not!

TRU
She’s right about the metatarsals

AVERY
Ha ha!

JENSEN
Oh, it’s gonna be like that? Huh? It’s gonna be like that for the rest of the year, yeah? You two ganging up? It’s not fun

AVERY
He knows, he knows I was right

(Tru smiles, looking around at her friends)
