(Tru watches Jack through the window, then turns to Davis)

TRU
Oh, come on, you’ve gotta let me talk to him

DAVIS
He was in a psych ward, Tru. He was diagnosed as being delusional

TRU
And so would I if I’d gone to a doctor claiming to be reliving days. But what makes you so sure he’s not just like me?

DAVIS
And out of all the gin joints in the world, he walks into mine?

TRU
I did

DAVIS
You were meant to

TRU
Maybe he was meant to. We won’t find out unless I talk to him

DAVIS
And say what? “How about this whole reliving days thing?”

TRU
Yeah, why not? I mean, if its true, he might be relieved to know that there’s someone like him

DAVIS
Oh, the way you are?

TRU
Okay, yeah, sure. It would be nice to have someone to share the responsibility with. I mean, what if he’s been doing it for a while? He may know more than we do

DAVIS
That’s assuming we can trust his answers

TRU
Oh, come on Davis. You don’t trust the waitress to give you decaf unless you see what pot she uses

DAVIS
Hey, coffee’s important to me. And so are you

TRU
You know I’m gonna have to talk to him soon

DAVIS
I know

Hi. You must be Randall. I’ve been hearing about you all week

 (Randall shakes her hand)

RANDALL
I can’t stay; I have to get back to work. But first, Lindsay tells me it’s absolutely vital that you like me, so what can I do?

LINDSAY
Oh, you can leave, so we can start talking about you

RANDALL
All right

LINDSAY
Here. Hold my cell

 (Tru takes it, confused)

TRU
Okay, what’s going on?

LINDSAY
Well, remember how we always said when someone proposed to us, we’d call the other one and the first thing we’d say was, “Don’t drop the phone”. Well, don’t drop the phone!

TRU
No!

LINDSAY
Yes! He asked me last night! He wants to get married this weekend

TRU
What did you say?!

LINDSAY
I…I asked for more time, I… (she laughs)

TRU
Do you love him?

LINDSAY
Yeah, I think I might. God, am I crazy? I mean, it’s not like he’s a total stranger, we dated that semester abroad, and…

TRU
But you’ve only been back together for a week

LINDSAY
Great, so we both agree I’m totally crazy

TRU
No, I mean, not if you asked for time, to think about it

LINDSAY
I did…

TRU
Okay

LINDSAY
I told him I’d let him know by the end of the day

LUC
Well, if by “okay” you mean 25 minutes late for work, then yeah. But if you’re on your way out, avoid downtown

TRU
Construction?

LUC
No, there was a bad accident. Radio said something about a dump truck ploughing into the number 6 bus. There’s all kinds of gridlock

TRU
Are we expecting any bodies?

LUC
I wouldn’t be surprised. Hey, do you ever notice how we always end up in this hallway at the same time?

TRU
Maybe someone’s trying to tell us something

(There is a short silence, they stare at each other)

TRU
Anyways, I know you’re in a rush, so…

LUC
Right, yes, I’ll see you later

TRU
Okay

5. INT. Staff room. DAY.
(Tru walks into the staff area. Harrison sits up from where he was lying across the couch)

HARRISON
So, you probably heard. A certain lovely young woman has seen the error of her ways, and is returning into the arms of her man, Harrison Davies

TRU
Who are we talking about here?

HARRISON
Who are we talking about? Lindsay, of course. She left a message. She needs to talk. Oh, its reconciliation time, baby

TRU
You never know. A message like that could mean a lot of things, Harr

HARRISON
Oh, you know, you should have heard her voice. I could hear how much she cares about me

TRU
Harr…

HARRISON
Yeah

TRU
She’s thinking about getting married…to someone else

HARRISON
What? Wait, come on, why would you say that?

TRU
His name’s Randall Thompson and they’ve been seeing each other for a week

HARRISON
A week? A week? She just met the guy

TRU
Well, actually, they dated while she was studying abroad, and now he’s an investment banker at Burkess and Wells, and…

HARRISON
Come on. What’s he after?

TRU
Not everyone’s on the scam, Harry

HARRISON
Hmm. He’s Euro, right? Well I’m sure a green card would make it real easy for him in this country

TRU
You’ve never even met him

(She notices Jack enter, pushing a trolley, Davis following after him)

HARRISON
Don’t have to. I think he’s working an angle, so he can keep doing this investment banking crap on this side of the Atlantic

TRU
Look, it doesn’t matter what you or I think. This is Lindsay’s decision. Stay out of it, Harr

6. INT. Morgue. DAY.

DAVIS

JACK
Dropped on the street a couple of hours ago

TRU
Time of death?

JACK
8:10 this morning. Hey sorry about crashing here after the late shift last night. You guys should try sleeping on that sofa in there. I swear, this guy’s the only guy in here that feels worse than I do this morning

(Jack looks at Davis, who looks at Tru)

What, did I miss a memo?

(The telephone is ringing in the office)

TRU
Davis?

DAVIS
That’s probably not important

TRU (meaningfully)
I can handle everything in here

DAVIS
Are you sure?

(she nods, and he leaves the room)

JACK
You know, Davis is an interesting guy, but why do I get the feeling that we’re gonna come in here one morning and all the corpses are gonna be dressed up for an imaginary tea party?

(Tru doesn’t answer, and walks away from him)

Tru, I can appreciate the silent treatment as well as anyone else, but what’s going on? I can’t even piss you off lately

TRU
See, you want the truth, um…Davis and I, we…

JACK
Let me save you the tap dance. This is about the letter I got from the Schenkman Center last week?

TRU
Partly

JACK
I had a feeling. Look, I can explain that

TRU
You don’t have to

JACK
Why?

TRU
Because I know it can be kind of hard to explain. Jack, what you thought was happening to you…it happens to me

 (There is a short silence)

JACK
I think we should go get a drink

7. INT. Bar. DAY.

JACK
You know, I had my suspicions about you. Running off all the time, the way you’re so invested in people’s lives

TRU
Why didn’t you say anything?

JACK
Why didn’t you?

TRU
I mean it’s just…I can’t believe…

JACK
That there’s two of us, I know! I can’t believe I’m finally talking to someone who doesn’t think I’m crazy

TRU
How sick are you of having…

JACK
…the same conversation?

JACK&TRU
Over and over again!

 (they both laugh)

TRU
And then having to act all surprised, like you hadn’t heard it, “Oh my God”, “No way”…

JACK
“That’s so interesting”, yeah

TRU
So when did it start?

JACK
For me, it started a while ago. I woke up after a near-death experience and found that it was the same day over again. And now I had this job to do. What about you?

TRU
Almost a year ago now. On the anniversary of my mother’s death

JACK
Really, your mother?

TRU
So, bodies ask for your help too?

JACK
Oh yeah. Although, it hasn’t been happening lately. Now I understand why. Obviously they prefer to go to you. Can’t say I blame them

TRU
You’ve gotta admit, it’s pretty amazing. I mean, being able to save people’s lives, to change things, make things right

JACK
Is that what we’re doing? I guess I just wonder sometimes

TRU
About?

JACK
Consequences. Ripples in fate. How what we do affects others

(A man comes over to the table next to them)

MAN
Jimmy, I got some seats over here

JACK
Hey, there’s a dartboard over there, let’s go play

8. INT. Bar. DAY.
(Tru and Jack are playing darts)

JACK
So who else knows? About you?

TRU
Well, first I told Harrison. And then Davis

JACK
You told Davis?

TRU
He kinda figured it out on his own. He’s really helped me navigate this

JACK
At least now I understand why you’re single

TRU
What’s that supposed to mean?

JACK
Well, you told Luc and he bolted, right?

TRU
First of all, nobody bolted

JACK
Oh

TRU
It just wasn’t working. Second of all, I…well, I never told him

JACK
Because you were afraid he’d bolt, right?

TRU (defensively)
Who have you told?

JACK
Me? Nobody. It tends to make things complicated

 (His pager bleeps)

Speaking of bolting, I got a pickup

TRU
Well hey, thanks. God, it’s so nice to know I’m not in this alone

JACK
Yeah. Well, I’ll see you later on tonight…or, depending on the body, maybe I’ll see you this morning

TRU
Okay

9. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Tru walks in, talking on her cellphone)

TRU
Hey Lindsay

Cut to: LINDSAY in her apartment
I did it. I finally made up my mind about Randall’s proposal

Cut to: TRU
And?

Cut to: LINDSAY
I said no. And he said goodbye. Oh, he’s such a great guy, Tru, I just...it felt too fast

Cut to: TRU
Look, I am sure that you did the right thing. Besides, the day will come when you’ll tell me not to drop the phone again, and then it’ll be the right guy. You know, the one who was meant to be

Cut to: LINDSAY (miserably)
You really believe that?

Cut to: TRU
Of course, rebound girl

Cut to: LINDSAY
Thanks, Tru. Night

Cut to: TRU
Good night

(she walks over to where Davis is standing over the body of Frank Colvin)

DAVIS
Someone’s got a little extra bounce in their step

TRU
Someone’s got a little tequila in their system. But more importantly, I talked to Jack

DAVIS (apprehensive)
And?

TRU
He’s just like me! He understands everything that I’ve been going through, because he does it too

DAVIS
You told him about you?

TRU
Of course

DAVIS
Was he surprised?

TRU
I guess…I mean, well just getting it out there, it was just so liberating, you know? Oh, and he brought up something interesting. He asked if I ever thought about how what we do could have a ripple effect

DAVIS
Well, yes, I mean every time you save someone, it does change the course of history. Not only do you affect that life, but the lives of everyone that person will touch. Tru, the power that you have is awesome. To change history for the better. What is it?

TRU
It’s just…the way he was talking about it, I’m not so sure Jack always thinks it for the better

 (Jack enters the room)

JACK
Hey, could I get a hand out here? I got a body. Suicide, found over at Chelsea River. What’s going on with the good doctor? No-one came to claim him, huh? That’s kind of sad

DAVIS (looking at Jack)
Yeah, that is sad

JACK
What?

DAVIS
Nothing

JACK (to Tru)
You told him, didn’t you?

TRU
It’s okay. You can trust him. Here, let me help you with the body

 (They both go to leave)

FRANK
Wait…

JACK & TRU
What?

DAVIS
I…I didn’t say any…

(Jack and Tru look at each other)

TRU
Here we go

(They both look at Frank. His head moves towards them)

FRANK
Help them

Cut to: JACK pulling on his coat at the morgue
Six feet tall, mid 40s, dark blond hair

Cut to: TRU
It’s 8:02. You said Colvin died around 8:10?

Cut to: JACK
According to witnesses

Cut to: TRU
So do you remember where you picked him up?

Cut to: JACK
Oh, jeez, Tru. I’ve never been much of a morning person

Cut to: TRU
Come on, Jack!

Cut to: JACK
Uh, Third and Cliffwood

TRU (voice-over)
East or West?

JACK (thinking about it)
East

Cut to: TRU
Meet you there

Cut to: Tru running along the street

Cut to: Jack running along the street

12. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Tru and Jack meet at the corner)

TRU
East Third and Cliffwood, where is he?

JACK
I don’t know

TRU
It’s 8:09, he should be here

 (Jack stares at Tru, worried)

What?

JACK
It might have been West Third!

(They start running)

Cut to: Shot of a signpost, reading W. 3rd Cliffwood

13. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Tru and Jack reach West Third and Cliffwood to find a crowd of people, they push their way through)

TRU
Excuse me…excuse me

(Frank Colvin is lying on the ground. An EMT listens to his chest with a stethoscope)

EMT
I’m calling it. 8:10am

(Jack turns round and walks away)

TRU
Jack!

JACK
That man is dead because of me

TRU
That’s not true

JACK
I could’ve sworn it was East Third

TRU
We can’t always be perfect

JACK
Have you ever lost anyone?

TRU
Yes. I understand how you feel

JACK
It’s hard to believe anyone understands how I feel

Cut to: Shot of City Morgue building

14. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Davis is working on Frank Colvin’s body)

DAVIS
Dr. Frank Colvin, he’s the one who asked for help?

TRU
Yeah. We didn’t make it to him on time

DAVIS
What do you mean by “we”?

TRU
Jack and I

DAVIS
Oh, together?

TRU
Yeah. Thus the “and”

DAVIS
So you guys talked?

TRU
Oh, right. Sorry, I told you yesterday. Of course, you don’t remember. Jack and I spoke, and…Davis, he is another me

DAVIS
Really, he said that?

TRU
It’s incredible, isn’t it?

DAVIS (flatly)
Yeah, it’s incredible

 (Tru’s cellphone rings.)

TRU
Just one sec…it’s Lindsay. I’m supposed to be meeting Randall, this guy proposed to her

DAVIS
Go ahead, you can take the call

TRU
Its okay, I’ll call her back. Okay, now about what you’re not saying

DAVIS
Well, I don’t get it. There was two of you, and you still couldn’t save him?

TRU
Jack, he got the street wrong, and…

DAVIS
Right, wrong street

TRU
Seriously, it was an honest mistake

DAVIS
When was the last time you made a mistake that cost someone their life?

TRU
Why are you being so hard on him?

DAVIS
Why aren’t you? You beat yourself up over the slightest misstep, and you’re gonna give Jack a free pass over someone’s life?

TRU
I told you, it wasn’t his fault. What’s going on with you, anyway? Can’t you just be happy for me that I found Jack, or does every silver lining have to have a cloud?

DAVIS
Sometimes it does

TRU
Well I’m sorry, I can’t live like that. I have to take victories where I can find them

DAVIS
Oh well since when is losing someone considered a victory?

JACK (entering through the double doors)
He’s right, Tru. Maybe we just have to admit we lost this round

TRU
Well, I don’t think that we have

JACK
It’s good to see we’re all on the same page again. You were saying?

TRU
I don’t think this is over yet.  Dr. Colvin died of a massive heart attack; we couldn’t have stopped that even if we got there on time. And he said “help them”, not “help me”. I mean, maybe he was supposed to die

JACK
Interesting

TRU
Look, everyone asks for help for a reason. We just have to find out what his reason was

(Jack looks at Tru, then over at Davis)

JACK
Got something to add, Davis?

DAVIS
I was just thinking. If every rewind is a matter of life and death, the doctor said “help them”, you have to figure there’s at least one person connected to this man that’s gonna die today. Maybe more. And the question is: who is it? And can you find them before it’s too late

TRU
Well, since no-one claimed the body yesterday, we should start with the next of kin

15. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Tru gets out of her car, talking on her cellphone. Jack gets out the other side)

TRU
Lindsay, you’re my best friend and I believe in you. Somehow I know you’re gonna make the right decision about Randall today. All right, I’ll call you later. Bye

 (she hangs up)

How’d it sound? Too surprised? Not surprised enough?

JACK
It was perfect. Almost thought you were worried she might say yes

TRU
Not today

(They walk into a building with “Ironworks Studio” on the window)

16. INT. Studio. DAY.

JACK
So, you think the doctor’s son is the one we’re supposed to save?

TRU
Well, he’s the next of kin, and his only family

(Jack presses the buzzer on the door leading to the backroom. A man answers it, holding a paintbrush and a cloth)

MARC
Can I help you?

TRU
Are you Marc Colvin?

MARC
Yeah

TRU
We work at the morgue downtown, and I’m sorry to have to tell you this but your father passed away this morning

JACK
Heart attack

MARC
Yeah, it would be

TRU
We were wondering if you’d mine coming down to the morgue to claim the body

MARC
I’d rather not. Thank you for telling me about it, though

 (He turns around to go)

TRU
But…you’re his son

MARC
My father and I weren’t very close. Look, it’s none of your business but, he didn’t exactly approve of me. Since Frank Colvin never claimed me as a son, I don’t think I should have to be the one to claim him now. Why don’t you try his office, that’s where he lived most of his life

(Tru and Jack look at each other. Marc disappears through the door again)

17. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Davis walks to his bookshelf and picks up a book, entitled “Life and Death: The Destiny of Souls”. He walks over to the worktop)

HARRISON (sitting up from the couch)
What’s up, doc?

DAVIS (startled)
God! Jeez…

HARRISON
Yo. Is Tru around?

DAVIS
No, Harrison, she’s out on the field. Can I take a message?

HARRISON
I kinda wanted to tell her in person…well, I’ll tell you anyway. I’ve got some great news about Lindsay

DAVIS
Oh. She already knows about that

HARRISON
How did she know? I just got the message

DAVIS
Because Tru’s been talking to Lindsay about the guy all week

HARRISON
Whoa, hey, what guy?

DAVIS
The guy that Lindsay’s thinking of marrying

HARRISON
But, she never…I didn’t…I didn’t say anything about marriage, man

DAVIS
Well, this is awkward, isn’t it?

HARRISON
Well, only if you don’t keep talking. Come on, Davis. What guy?

DAVIS
Um, Thompson. Randall Thompson I think. An investment banker with an Irish accent, which women find so appealing. I don’t understand why accents have such an effect, because when you think about…

HARRISON
Shh. What, he’s foreign? He’s from another country? And he just lives here, and all of a sudden he just pops the question and asks some chick to marry him? Hello? What does that say to you?

DAVIS
That he’s impulsive and likes to travel?

18. INT. Surgery. DAY.
(Tru and Jack walk into Dr. Colvin’s surgery. A woman – Nadine Casola - is standing by the reception desk)

NADINE
No, I’m actually a referral. Dr. Colvin left me a message asking me to come by today

(The telephone rings, and the receptionist answers it)

GRACE
Dr. Colvin’s office, this is Grace. Can you hold please?

(to the woman) Ms. Casola, the doctor should be here shortly if you’d like to take a seat, and wait

NADINE
He said 10am. I’ve been waiting. You know what, forget it

(she walks out, past Tru and Jack. Grace goes back to the telephone)

GRACE
Sorry about that Mrs Hoffman. Your test results will be in this afternoon, and I’ll have him call you first thing. Okay, bye-bye

(to Tru and Jack) Hi, how can I help you?

JACK
Uh, my name is Jack Harper, and um, we’re with the City Morgue. I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this, but Dr. Colvin died from a heart attack at around 8 o clock this morning

TRU
We were wondering if somebody from this office could come down to the morgue to identify the body

GRACE
Right…

(She turns and walks over to her colleague; as she talks she gets more upset)

We need to close the office for the day. Would you look in the doctor’s book and call anyone who’s scheduled for an appointment. Oh, um, Lily. She’s probably still waiting for him. Someone should probably tell her

JACK
Lily?

GRACE (in tears)
She’s a waitress at the coffee shop across the street, she’s going to community college, and Frank was tutoring her

TRU
Let us help you. It’s on the way. We’ll tell her

Cut to: Shot of the coffee shop

19. EXT. Coffee shop. DAY.

JACK
So, you think this girl might be one of “them”?

TRU
Well, you said it yourself. Ripples. One person’s life touches so many others. How many lives did Dr. Colvin touch? And if Davis is right, which one of them is gonna die today?

20. INT. Coffee Shop. DAY.

LILY
Oh my God…What happened?

TRU
He had a heart attack

LILY
I served him coffee every morning for, like, over a year. One day he saw me drawing a sketch of human anatomy from my biology text, and he corrected me

TRU
On what?

LILY
Um…he told me the left lung is smaller than the right lung…to make room for the heart, you know? He said that’s how he’d remembered it, because it’s like life. The heart always comes first. Excuse me…

(she breaks down in tears, gathers her things up and leaves)

TRU
The man Lily knew and the man his son knew were two different people

JACK
Oh, you know how families are. Maybe we save the most dysfunctional stuff for each other

(He sees Lily’s book on the table and turns to the shop assistant)

Hey, man. Lily left her book here

ASSISTANT
You can probably catch her at the bus stop

TRU
Which one?

ASSISTANT
Down the block. The number 6

[Flashback: LUC: “…a bad accident. Radio said something about a dump truck ploughing into the number 6 bus”]

TRU
Yesterday there was an accident

JACK
Lily’s bus?

Cut to: Shot of number 6 bus “Downtown Express”. It passes by the coffee shop, where Jack and Tru are now standing

JACK
There it is!

 (They both run after it)

21. EXT. Bus Stop. DAY.
(Lily gets onto the Number 6 bus. Tru and Jack run round the corner: the bus moves away)

TRU
Wait, stop!

JACK
Hey, stop the bus!

TRU
Hold on!

JACK
Lily! Lily!

(They both chase after it, Jack taking the lead now)

TRU
Stop the bus!

JACK
Hey!

TRU
Lily!

JACK
Hey…

(he draws level with the bus, and then overtakes it.)

TRU
Jack, no!

(A metre in front of the bus, he leaps in front of it, holding one arm up)

(The bus halts suddenly, the passengers are flung forward.)

TRU
Jack! What the hell were you thinking?

(Jack turns around. A dump truck races over the crossing, in front of an SUV which swerves to avoid it, its horn blaring)

JACK
Come on, you’re telling me you’ve never jumped in front of an oncoming vehicle to save someone?

(The passengers have started to get off the bus, realising the truck would’ve hit them. Lily walks up to them)

TRU
Are you okay?

LILY
I think so

JACK
Hey, you forgot this

LILY (shaken up)
Thank you

22. INT. Morgue. DAY.

DAVIS
So Jack stopped the bus. Okay

TRU
That’s okay. You’re allowed to be wrong about him. I forgive you

DAVIS
All right. Well, what now?

TRU
Well, that’s the thing. Yesterday you and I talked about how one life touches so many others. How do I know this is what Dr. Colvin meant when he said, “help them”?

DAVIS
Did anybody die in the accident yesterday?

TRU
That’s just it, Luc wasn’t sure. Although Jack thinks…

DAVIS
Jack thinks? Well, what do you think?

TRU
What I was gonna tell you, if you’d let me, was that Jack and I were talking about lives touching…

DAVIS
You told Jack about what we talked about?

TRU
Come on, it’s not as if it was classified

DAVIS
I didn’t even know that you talked to me about it until now!

TRU
What is going on with you? Why are you acting like this?

DAVIS
I know it must be a big relief to share this with someone, but ever since you discovered the truth about Jack it’s like you’re walking around with blinders on. Which is exactly what I think he wants

TRU
Please don’t tell me you’re jealous

DAVIS
What?! I’m not jealous. I’m sceptical, which you used to be!

TRU
Well, what’s there to doubt? Jack’s practically proven that he’s here to help

DAVIS
Oh, has he?

TRU
He jumped in front of a bus!

DAVIS
Yeah, to stop an accident which you just said yourself might not have killed anyone. You have to ask yourself, “Why Jack?”, “Why now?”. Why would the two of you be in the same place at the same time? Look, I know that you don’t want to be alone in this, but something here isn’t right, and something about him isn’t right

(Tru shakes her head, and storms out)

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images so far in sequence]

23. EXT. Morgue. DAY.
(Tru walks out the back way, and down the alley outside the morgue. Jack meets her, coming the other way)

JACK
Hey, you okay?

TRU
Fine. My mind’s just on other things

JACK
You feel like sharing?

TRU
I just wanna follow up a little on Dr. Colvin’s call for help

JACK
Tru, we saved a busload of people. Our work here is done. You’ve gotta learn to take yes for an answer

TRU
The son might know something. I just wanna try him again

JACK
All right, let me grab my stuff

TRU
No, its fine, I got it. No reason for both of us to be obsessive, right?

Cut to: Shot of Ironworks Studio

24. INT. Studio. DAY.
(As Tru enters, she can hear Marc and Grace talking in the back room)

MARC (off-screen)
Why should I waste my time?

GRACE (off-screen)
Because it’s the right thing to do, you’re his son

MARC (off-screen)
Doesn’t mean I have to pretend it meant more to me than it did to him

(Tru walks into the back room)

GRACE
Can’t you just for today do this one little thing for him?

TRU
I’m sorry to intrude

MARC
You again

TRU
Your father’s body is still unclaimed, and nobody’s even come to identify it

MARC
What, did you both go to the same school of etiquette? I have my reasons, good ones

TRU
We’re not here to judge

MARC
You didn’t know my father. He was the man who convinced a 15-year-old kid that he was a failure. Because he wanted to do something other than follow in his father’s footsteps. It was years before I realized that “artist” wasn’t another word for “disappointment”

TRU
Okay, so your father wasn’t a saint. But he tried to help people. Did you know he was even tutoring someone? A girl in junior college

MARC
Really? Was she studying biology? Something medical?

(Tru doesn’t reply, knowing its true)

Yeah. Dad was a decent guy if you met his expectations, but if not…Let’s just say I know how it feels to go unclaimed. Excuse me

25. INT. Studio. DAY.
(Grace and Tru walk out of the back room, into the main room)

GRACE
He wouldn’t return my phone calls. I just wanted to ask him to help me choose a mortuary, pick out one of Frank’s suits. All the things that should be done by family. I guess I am alone in this

 [Flashback: dead Frank: “Help them”]

TRU
No, you’re not

Cut to: Shot of an office tower block

26. INT. Randall’s Office. DAY.
(Harrison bursts in to Randall’s office)

HARRISON (angrily)
Hey! You Randall Thompson?

RANDALL
How did you…? Where’s my assistant?

HARRISON
Sit down, man. This is only gonna take a second

RANDALL
Who are you?

HARRISON
Harrison Davies

RANDALL
Ah, Lindsay’s Harrison

HARRISON
That’s right. And I’m only gonna say this once, you listen up. If you think you can take this sweet, innocent girl and get some green card, and break her heart…well, I don’t care where you go. I don’t care what you do…but I’ll find you, and break you

(Randall reaches into his desk drawer. Harrison takes a step back. Randall brings out a box, and comes around to stand next to Harrison. He shows him whats inside: it’s a ring)

RANDALL
My grandfather gave this to my grandmother when they got engaged. My father gave it to my mother. I was hoping to get it resized so that Lindsay could wear it…when we move to London

HARRISON
London?

RANDALL
The firm’s sending me back. I’ve been promoted. And I want to take Lindsay with me. As my wife. You see, I don’t need a green card. I need her

Cut to: Shot of the surgery building

27. INT. Surgery. DAY.

GRACE
You know, I keep seeing him. All day. Ever since you told me

TRU
Happens for a while. After my mom died, I saw her all the time. At the grocery store, in the carpool line at school. It will stop

GRACE
What if I don’t want it to?

(she sniffs a bunch of flowers on the side)

Mm. Gardenias. Frank gave them to me for my birthday

TRU
This may be none of my business, but…

GRACE
I loved him

TRU
Did he know?

GRACE
I never said anything, but…somehow, I always thought there would be time…to let him know what he meant to me. There is no time, is there?

(she wipes her ears, and walks back around to the pile of files. She picks one up)

And you see, Frank was always doing things like this. Taking on other doctors’ lost causes, helping people

TRU
Lost causes? Meaning terminals?

GRACE
Her HCG levels were elevated, which usually signifies inoperable cancer. But Dr. Colvin ordered additional tests to be run on her blood samples

TRU
May I see that?

GRACE
Yeah

TRU
According to this, the patient recently suffered a miscarriage. Pregnancy would cause her levels to be off

GRACE
Well, then she was misdiagnosed by her previous doctor. She’s not going to die. I’m sure Frank meant to tell her

(Tru looks at the name on the file)

TRU
“Nadine Casola”.

[Flashback: in the doctors surgery earlier. GRACE: “Ms. Casola, the doctor will be here shortly if you’d like to take a seat”]

She was in your office today, but she left

GRACE
Yes

TRU
So she still believes she’s dying. Grace, you have to call her. She needs to hear this news right now, please

GRACE
Here…

(she hands Tru the file, and picks up the telephone)

GRACE
It’s ringing…there’s no answer!

TRU
Keep calling

 (she runs outside)

28. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Tru is hurrying down the street. Her cellphone rings)

TRU
Hello?

JACK (voice-over)
You sound like you’re in a rush. The son put you on to something?

TRU
I know who was supposed to die. Nadine Casola. A suicide. She was misdiagnosed. I’m on my way to the…

[Flashback: JACK: “I’ve got a body. Suicide. Found at Chelsea River”]

Wait a minute, you picked her up yesterday!

Cut to: Jack, on the telephone, at the Morgue

Cut to: TRU
The suicide at Chelsea River. Why didn’t you say something when you saw her at the doctor’s office?

Cut to: JACK
Maybe I just didn’t recognise her. You know, sometimes suicides don’t look all neat and tidy when you get to the scene, Tru. Look, a life is in danger. Can’t we argue about this later?

Cut to: TRU
Wait a minute, Jack. What happened? Why didn’t you tell me what you knew?

Cut to: JACK
I gotta go, my cell’s dying

(He hangs up the telephone. He is not even using a cell)

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images so far in sequence]

Cut to: Chelsea River – NIGHT. Nadine Casola is sitting outside on a chair, a blanket over her knees. She is barely conscious, the telephone beside her is ringing. Next to it is a bottle of vodka and an empty bottle of pills

29. EXT. Chelsea River. NIGHT.
(Tru’s car screeches to a halt outside Nadine’s home. She gets out of the car and runs to the house. She knocks on the door)

TRU
Nadine?

(She tries the door, it’s locked. Quickly, she runs back down the steps and goes to run round the side of the house, where she bumps into Jack)

JACK
We’re too late

TRU
I gotta see for myself

(she tries to run past him, he stops her, holding on to her arm)

JACK
Why are you being like this?

TRU
I’m trying to do my job!

JACK
So am I

TRU
You don’t want me to save her. You want her to die. So help me God if you don’t let go… (she wrenches away from him)

JACK
Tru, Tru, think a minute. Nadine Casola is supposed to die. Why should you change that?

TRU
Because someone asked me too, because I can

JACK (stepping in front of her again)
That’s not good enough! You have no idea what you’re doing! If you save someone who shouldn’t be here, there are consequences

TRU
You think I’m messing up some grand plan? Maybe I am the plan! If someone needs my help, I am not gonna stand by and watch!

JACK
Then I’m not gonna stop you

 (Tru runs past him)

This time

30. EXT. Chelsea River. NIGHT.
 (Tru runs up to Nadine)

TRU
Nadine! Nadine…hey, hey, what did you do?

(she picks up the empty bottle of pills, its label reading: OXYCODONE. Nadine moves her head slightly, her eyes are closed)

Hey, hey, hey…you’re okay. You’re gonna be okay. Stay with me, okay? It’s gonna be all right

 (she dials on her cellphone)

Come on, Nadine, it’s okay. You’re gonna be fine.

(to the phone) Yes, hi. I want to report an emergency. I need an ambulance. I have an overdose. But she’s still breathing

(to Nadine) You’re gonna be fine, Nadine

Cut to: Shot of Lindsay’s apartment - NIGHT

31. INT. Lindsay’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Lindsay enters, putting her keys on the side. She turns around in the darkness, and sees Harrison sitting there. She jumps, startled)

HARRISON
Hey

LINDSAY
What are…?

HARRISON
I never returned your key

LINDSAY
Harrison, tonight isn’t…

HARRISON
Look, I heard about your proposal

LINDSAY
And?

HARRISON
And I checked this guy out

(off her look) I know. I know it pisses you off

LINDSAY (sighing)
Harrison…

HARRISON
You need to know something. Before you make a mistake that you’ll regret for the rest of your life

LINDSAY
I think you should go, okay? I don’t think you should be here

HARRISON
Look, say yes

 (she looks at him)

Say yes. Look, he is the real deal. He’s the better guy. A better guy than I could be, for you. Well at least…at least right now. And he really loves you. Say yes

(Lindsay moves forward to hug him, her eyes full of tears)

LINDSAY
Thank you

Cut to: shot of Frank’s house - NIGHT

32. INT. Frank’s house. NIGHT.

TRU
I see you chose the suit

GRACE
He wore it one night when he was going to a concert. He looked very distinguished

TRU
I still wanna help. If there’s anything I can do

(There is a knocking at the door. Grace opens it, Lily is standing there)

LILY
Hi, Grace? I’m Lily. I came to give back Dr. Colvin’s book

 (Grace beckons her in)

GRACE
Please, please

(Lily steps inside and notices Tru)

LILY
Hi

TRU
Hi

(Lily hands the book to Grace)

GRACE
Thank you. Frank spoke to highly of you

LILY
You too. Did you like the Gardenias?

GRACE
How did you know about that?

LILY
Oh God, he agonized over which ones to get you. Gardenias, roses. He finally chose Gardenias because of what they meant. Unspoken love

(Grace looks surprised, and smiles. She looks down at the book)

GRACE
I’ll put this in his medical collection. It was very nice to finally meet you

LILY
Yeah. Um, I’m really sorry it had to be this way

 (She leaves the house)

GRACE
It’s so ironic. I mean, Frank touched so many people. And the one person he wanted to help the most, he couldn’t

TRU
You mean…

GRACE
His son

(They both walk through into the dining room)

GRACE
Frank just never knew how to tell him

(Tru looks around the room in awe)

33. INT. Frank’s House. NIGHT.
(Tru opens the door to Marc Colvin)

TRU
Thanks for coming

MARC
You said on the phone all I had to do was sign something and then this would be over

TRU
Right. A notarised statement. I get your signature, we can release the body, and you’ll never have to think of your father again

 (Marc nods)

GRACE
Please, come in

34. INT. Frank’s House. NIGHT.
(Grace walks through to the dining room. Marc follows)

MARC
Grace, I’ve got a lot of work to do. She told me that this whole thing was gonna…just take a few…

(Marc looks around the room, amazed. The walls are full of his paintings)

GRACE
He’s been buying them from galleries for years

MARC
I don’t…

TRU
He wanted to be with you. This was as close as he could get

MARC
I thought that he didn’t…why didn’t he say anything?

(Grace hugs him as he starts crying)

GRACE
Maybe he thought there was time

35. INT. Morgue corridor. NIGHT.
(Luc is walking down the corridor towards the elevator. It opens and Tru steps out)

TRU
Hey stranger

LUC
Oh, we gotta stop meeting like this

TRU
Do we?

LUC
Tru, I understand…

TRU
I got something pointed out to me today. We never have as much time as we think

LUC
Meaning?

TRU
I don’t wanna stand around and wait for someday to come. I wanna make it work with us

LUC
Tru, I understand that you’re serious. But what’s different now that’s gonna make things better between us? Unless there’s something you wanna tell me, something you couldn’t or wouldn’t before, then…what’s gonna keep us from going in the same circles?

TRU
This time, there is something different

 (she kisses him gently)

This weekend, let’s talk. About everything

LUC
Okay

TRU
Okay

36. INT. Davis’s office. NIGHT.
(Davis is writing at his desk. Tru enters)

TRU
Hey. I tried to call, but you weren’t around. Uh, I saved a life today

DAVIS
That’s good. That’s good

TRU
Jack tried to stop me. You were right, Davis. And I should have listened, but I didn’t wanna hear what you were saying. So I’m just really sorry, that…

DAVIS
I’m sorry too. I just kind of lost…

TRU
Davis, just let me do this, okay?

 (He nods)

You said that I’m different because of this gift that I have, and I’ve gotten to a place where I can accept that. But what I don’t wanna be is…alone. And I wanted to badly to believe in Jack, that I ignored the one person who’s been with me all along. I needed to know that there was someone else out there who was like me. But Jack, he’s…not even close

DAVIS
No, no he’s not

(he closes the book he’s been making notes out of)

Look, it’s not just supernatural theory, it’s scientific fact. From eastern philosophy to Newton’s third law of motion. They all say the same thing. That every force has an equal. An opposite force. I should’ve said something sooner but I didn’t have any real proof until today. You’re right about Jack. He is not like you. He is the opposite of you. You save lives, and he…

TRU
Takes them

(The camera moves away from the office and back into the morgue)
