------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Tru is talking on the telephone to Davis)

DAVIS (voice-over)
So you ended up ordering take-out, huh? What’d you get?

TRU
Mu shu pork

DAVIS
Mmm. Nice choice. With the pancakes?

TRU
No. Straight from the box. You?

Cut to: DAVIS in his apartment
I’m just digging into a rack of lamb, with some garlic mashed potatoes…

Cut to: TRU
Cereal, again?

Cut to: DAVIS
Yeah. The doctor says I’m fibre poor

Cut to: TRU
So what are you doing tonight?

Cut to: DAVIS
Oh you know, the usual

Cut to: TRU
Nothing?

Cut to: DAVIS
Exactly. But me being alone on a Friday night is one thing, but you on the other hand…

Cut to: TRU
Well, with my life, it’s rejuvenating to have a night off. You know, and besides, I told you. I’m between exes

DAVIS (voice-over)
Hmm

TRU
What?

Cut to: DAVIS
It’s okay to say that you miss someone

Cut to: TRU
Luc? Why would you say that I miss Luc?

Cut to: DAVIS
I didn’t say Luc. You said Luc

Cut to: TRU
Yeah, well…

DAVIS (voice-over)
The way I see it is, just because we’re alone doesn’t mean we’re lonely

(Tru settles by the window, watching her neighbour across the way)

TRU
So, by that reasoning, you’d argue that my neighbour across the way, she looks like she’s having the time of her life

DAVIS (voice-over)
She’s probably miserable

TRU
Gotta tell you Davis, it sure seems like she’s having fun to me

DAVIS (voice-over)
Trust me you know, nothing is ever exactly what it seems. Listen, I’ve gotta go. The Outer Limits marathon is about to start

TRU
I’ll let you go

Cut to: DAVIS
Hey Tru, for what it’s worth, I happen to think that you have a pretty exciting life, you know? Time travel, saving lives, pretty cool boss…

Cut to: TRU
Yeah. Good night Davis

Cut to: DAVIS
Good night Tru

Cut back to Tru – she hangs up the phone. The camera keeps moving forward across to the neighbour’s apartment, it’s in darkness except for a pool of light on a bunch of flowers on a table. The answer machine kicks in:

WOMAN’S VOICE
Leave me a message. I’ll call you back

MAN (on answerphone)
Consider this a warning….

Cut to: MAN in a phone booth
You can make all the trouble you want but it’s only a matter of time before I find you. And when I do…well, let’s just say there won’t be a second warning

(He slams the phone down and walks out of the booth)

Four, as in, upstairs!

MATT
Tru, hey!

TRU
Hey

MATT
Wow, I haven’t seen you around much. I thought you moved

TRU
Oh, no. I’ve just been working some weird hours lately. But delivery man left this at my door by accident

MATT
Oh, cool thanks

TRU
Yeah

 (She starts to walk away)

MATT
Uh, hey, Tru…

(he puts the box down in his apartment and walks across to her)

Can I get your advice on something?

TRU
Sure

MATT
Okay…there’s this girl, and she lives nearby…and she is amazing

TRU
Right

MATT
You know, she’s always busy running around all over town, but whenever I see her, she just makes me wanna smile

TRU
I see

MATT
Yeah…yeah, and, I’ve been wanting to ask her out, for a while…but I’m afraid that if she says no, things will get weird. You know, on account of us being neighbours

TRU
Yeah…well, I would advise you to first make sure that she’s ready to date, and after that, I would take things slow

MATT
Right. Yeah. Slow

TRU
Very slow. You know?

MATT
Okay, okay, makes sense. Okay, well, thank you

TRU
No problem

LUC
Just the morgue attendant I was looking for

TRU
I’ll bet you say that to all the girls

LUC
Do you remember I told you I was looking for a new apartment?

TRU
Yeah

LUC
I just found the perfect one-bedroom. It’s close to work, utilities included

TRU
Congrats

LUC
Well actually I haven’t sighed the lease yet, cause I wanted to run it by you first

TRU
Me, why?

LUC
Yeah, um, the thing is, its in the building across the street from yours, and I didn’t want you feeling crowded or anything. And so I figured I should probably check with you

TRU
Are you kidding? You should jump on it. Places in my neighbourhood are so hard to find

(they reach the elevator. It dings, and Jack steps out holding a bunch of forms)

JACK
Morning gang

TRU
Hey. Got your state license forms?

JACK
Davis only called me three times to remind me

(Jack goes off into the morgue. Tru walks into the elevator)

LUC
So you’re sure about this?

TRU
Positive. It’ll be so nice to have a friend across the street

LUC
Guess I got a lease to sign

TRU
Sweet

LUC
See you

TRU
Okay, bye

(The elevator door closes. Camera pans over to show Jack was standing just inside the morgue, listening to them)

5. INT. Davis’s office. DAY.

DAVIS
Signed and dated, perfect. I see you put the morgue as your mailing address

JACK
Yeah, I hope that’s okay. I’ve been staying at a friend of mine’s empty place since I moved here. Figured this was the best place to get me

DAVIS
Not a problem. As a matter of fact, you got some mail this morning…here it is

(He hands Jack a letter. The envelope is headed: “The Schenkman Center.”)

DAVIS (cont’d)
The Schenkman Center. That’s an impressive facility

JACK
Yeah. Yeah, one of the best in the country

DAVIS
Were you there long? I don’t remember it being on your resume

JACK
It was a long time ago, I didn’t think it was relevant

DAVIS
Did you ever run into a guy named Tom Forrester? An old college buddy of mine. We used to play D & D on the weekends. We called him Wizard

JACK
Forrester. Yeah, sure. Big fella

DAVIS
Yeah

JACK
Hell of a guy

DAVIS
Yeah…Good old Wizard. I wonder what he’s…I should give him a call

(He takes a pen and writes “Call Tom Forrester” on a post-it note, then sticks it to the side of the computer screen)

HARRISON
So the meet’s at noon. High noon

TRU
Don’t be so dramatic

HARRISON
It’s the first time me and Lindsay have seen each other since the breakup. We’re exchanging stuff. How is that not dramatic?

TRU
Look, I want you both to be happy, but the truth is: It’s not so bad being single

HARRISON
Who are you kidding? Not me. You’ve been busted up since you and Luc split

TRU
That’s just not true

HARRISON
Yeah? What’s your love life now? Talking on the phone with Davis all day, telling me your upstairs neighbour has a crush on you

TRU
You’re pleasant today, huh?

(the waitress puts the bill on the table)

HARRISON
You’re right. You’re right, I’m sorry. I’m sorry, I’m just…I’m just nervous. Anyway, I gotta get going

 (he picks up the bill)

Whose turn is it?

TRU
You ask that like we actually take turns

HARRISON
Yeah well, I’ll get the next one

TRU
I’ll hold my breath

(Harrison leaves. Tru walks over to the counter. A woman is standing there, walking on a mobile phone)

CHRIS
I don’t care. You listen to me. For the last time, leave me alone

[Flashback: the apartment directly across from Tru’s, where Tru was looking into the previous night. This is the same woman. TRU: “My neighbour looks like she’s having the time of her life”]

 (Chris looks up at Tru)

CHRIS
Some guys…won’t take no for an answer

TRU
Well, try saying yes. Yes, you’re a psycho. Yes, I was right to break up with you

CHRIS
I’ll have to remember that. You look familiar, have we met?

TRU
No, but I’ve seen you around the neighbourhood

(The waitress comes over, and takes the credit card)

WAITRESS
Thanks, Chris

TRU
I’m Tru Davies

CHRIS
Chris Berenson. Always nice to put a name with a face

TRU
Absolutely
(to the waitress) Thanks
(to Chris) Take care)

LINDSAY
Two eggs and silly putty…and, 13 assorted comic books

HARRISON
I’ve been looking for these!

LINDSAY
All right, where’s my stuff?

HARRISON
Oh, yeah

(he reaches into his pocket, pulls out a black bra, puts it on the table and pushes it over to Lindsay)

LINDSAY
That’s it?

HARRISON
Well yeah, I turned my place upside down and, well that is all I could find

LINDSAY (inspecting it)
That’s not even mine

(she drops it back in front of him)

HARRISON
Yeah, well, uh…(he clears his throat)
Look, the reason I asked you to meet me here today is because I wanted to look you in the eye…into those eyes…and tell you that, um…look, I want you back

LINDSAY
What?

HARRISON
Yeah, look, just give me one more chance, that’s all I’m asking for

LINDSAY
No, I’ve given you like, 50 chances, and you blew every single one of them. You’re just too self-absorbed to know it

HARRISON
Yeah…and you’re like, the perfect girlfriend, right?

LINDSAY
What?

HARRISON
Oh yeah, you’re so needy. And demanding. And you always ordered the most expensive thing on the menu when you knew, you knew I couldn’t afford it

Cut to: the man sitting behind Lindsay looks up at them

HARRISON
Right? Hmm?

LINDSAY
Take care of yourself, Harrison

Hi, Wiz? Hi, it’s Gothar, the Elf King. Yeah…Davis. Yeah, hey listen, turns out we have a friend in common. Jack Harper? Uh-huh. Yeah, he used to work with you at Schenkman

TRU
Hello?

Cut to: LINDSAY walking along the street
So your brother and I are officially through

TRU
Can’t say I’m surprised, but I’m so sorry

(Tru’s eye is caught by the Chris’s apartment, across the way. Chris is arguing with a man)

LINDSAY (voice-over)
He made this sad, last-ditch attempt to patch things up, and when I said no, he called me needy and demanding. Can you believe that?

(Tru tries to see what’s going on in the apartment across the way)

Hello? Tru? You there?

TRU
Yeah, sorry, I just…there’s this couple across the way in the building and they’re having this nasty fight

LINDSAY (voice-over)
Are they still going at it?

TRU
I can’t tell…they just turned the lights off

Cut to: LINDSAY
One guess: make-up sex

Cut to: TRU
Yeah, you’re probably right. Anyway Linds, I gotta get to work

Cut to: LINDSAY
Fine. I’ll talk to you later, okay?

Okay

JACK
Hey, Tru. I thought you said your neighbourhood was getting better

TRU
It is

JACK
Well I got a homicide here that might disagree

TRU
You picked this up near my place?

JACK
Building across the street if I’m not mistaken. Victim’s name is Chris Berenson. Died from massive head trauma

TRU
Chris Berenson?

JACK
Friend of yours?

TRU
No, we just met. Today

JACK
Sure you wanna see this?

TRU
Yeah

(Jack unzips the bag and pulls it back to reveal the body of a man, with blood all over his head)

TRU
That’s not Chris Berenson

JACK
It’s what his I.D. said

TRU
No, Chris is a girl. I saw this guy at her place earlier tonight. He was furious about something

JACK
You know, the cops said something about thinking the killer was a woman

(Jack looks in Chris’s pocket and brings out a pen. It has the letter “A” on it)

Bag this, will you?

TRU (taking the pen, and walking over to the bags)
Two people, same name, same apartment

JACK
It’s either coincidence…

TRU
Doubtful

JACK
…or our buddy here’s been up to no good

 (Davis comes into the room)

DAVIS
Hi, Tru

TRU
Hey Davis, I thought you were home for the night

DAVIS
I was, but, uh…

JACK
Couldn’t stay away, huh?

DAVIS
Actually, um, if you have a moment…

TRU
I’m kinda in the middle of something, can it wait?

DAVIS
It’s actually important. We need to talk

JACK
Tru, go ahead, I got this

DAVIS
Tru?

TRU
Yeah okay, I’m coming

(Davis walks back into his office. Chris’s head turns towards Tru)

CHRIS

 (The corridor is empty)

Even when you relive days, they still get away

13. INT. Morgue. DAY.

DAVIS
So your neighbour and the victim have the same name. He’s dead and she’s the prime suspect?

TRU
Yep. But it wouldn’t be any fun if it were easy

DAVIS
Okay, well, here’s a theory: Could be identity theft. He took her identity, and she killed him for it. Identity Theft is on the rise you know. They’re stealing it online, or taking a picture of your credit card with a cellphone

TRU
Well she seemed so normal. It’s hard to imagine her killing anyone

DAVIS
Yeah but people can do a lot of things in self-defence, especially when if pushed past their limit

[Flashback: Chris (on cellphone): “For the last time, leave me alone!”]

TRU
Maybe you’re right

DAVIS
Hi, Jack

 (Jack enters the room)

JACK
Sorry to interrupt. I just wanted to drop off my state licence forms

DAVIS
Super, thanks

JACK (to Tru)
Hey

TRU
Hi

DAVIS
We were just, uh, going over the new…intake procedure

JACK (looking over at the envelopes on the side)
Hey, you mind if I check the mail? Unfortunately, this is the only address most people have for me

DAVIS
Go ahead

JACK
Thanks

DAVIS
Tru, about the new intake procedure?

 (They walk out together)

DAVIS
So were there any other clues about the victim’s real identity?

[Flashback: the pen with the letter “A”]

TRU
He had a pen with a logo on it. It was a sunburst with a capital A inside

Cut to: Jack. He picks up the letter from “the Schenkman Center” and puts it in his pocket

Cut back to Davis and Tru

DAVIS
Probably from his work, I’ll look into it

TRU
An identity thief with a day job

DAVIS
All the better to meet new victims

TRU
I’d better get going. Chris’ll be at the diner any minute

DAVIS
Okay, I’ll call you if anything comes up

(Tru turns to the door, then turns around, clicking her fingers)

TRU
There was something else. You wanted to tell me right before the day rewound

DAVIS
I did?

TRU
Yeah, you said it was important

DAVIS
No clue. Too bad I don’t relive days. But look on the bright side: If you don’t change too many things today, then maybe we’ll have the same conversation tonight

TRU
Here’s hoping

14. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Harrison walks along, on his cellphone)

HARRISON
Yeah. A redo day. I get it. No time for breakfast. But, considering you’re 24 hours ahead of me, what happened with Lindsay yesterday?

Cut to: TRU on her way to the Diner
You want my advice? Save the sit-down for another day. Another week even

Cut to: HARRISON
Oh man, it was that bad, huh?

Cut to: TRU
Put it this way: Yeah

Cut to: HARRISON
All right, all right. Thanks for the heads up. Too bad you’re blowing off breakfast, cause I would have picked up the tab today

Cut to: TRU
It must be nice living in your world, huh Harry?

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue building – DAY

15. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Luc enters, only Jack is there)

LUC
Hey Jack, is Tru around?

JACK
You just missed her, man

LUC
Damn. I needed to ask her something, there’s kind of a time factor

JACK
She should be on her cell

LUC
No, no, this is one of those things that’s best to do in person, you know, make sure she means what she says

JACK
You mean, women don’t always say what they actually mean?

LUC (laughs)
Not the ones I fall for. See you, man

JACK
Yeah

Cut to: Shot of the Standard Diner Café

16. INT. Diner. DAY.
(Tru enters; Chris is standing by the counter on her cellphone)

MAN’S VOICE (over cellphone)
You’re finished. The fun is over

CHRIS
For the last time, leave me alone!

TRU
Coffee, please

 (She looks across at Chris)

CHRIS
Some guys, they just can’t take no for an answer

TRU
Ex-boyfriend?

CHRIS
It’s sort of a long story

(she hands her credit card to the waitress)

WAITRESS
Thanks…Chris

TRU
You know, you look familiar. You don’t live on York by any chance?

CHRIS
Yeah, I do

TRU
Same here. I’m Tru Davies

CHRIS
Chris Berenson. It’s always nice to put a name with a face

TRU
Chris Berenson?

CHRIS
Yeah. You heard of me?

TRU
Sort of. There was this guy outside your building this morning, asking all these questions about you. He seems pretty belligerent

CHRIS
Uh…about six foot? Dark brown hair?

TRU
Same guy who just can’t take no for an answer?

CHRIS
Only he’s not an ex, he’s…well, it’s nothing I should get into

TRU
Well, hey, if you’re heading home, I could walk with you. You know, in case he’s still around

CHRIS
Okay

TRU
Okay

17. EXT. Street. DAY.

CHRIS
It was six months ago when I found out he’d stolen my identity. I was applying for a loan and the bank ran a credit check, They found ten different credit cards in my name. He’d used them to run up  nearly $60,000 in charges

TRU
And now he’s threatening you?

CHRIS
Yeah, because I went to the police

TRU
No arrest?

CHRIS
I.D theft’s tricky to prosecute. You need absolute proof which I don’t have. But it’s getting worse because, now I feel like someone’s been watching me

TRU
That’s creepy. Any idea how this all started?

CHRIS
No, but there’s a million ways. If you don’t have a shredder, a firewall, a digitally-scrambled phone, you may as well have a sign up saying “ruin my life”

 (they stop outside Chris’s building)

Anyway. Thanks for the company. And do me a favour, if you see that guy again, just say I moved or something

TRU
No problem

CHRIS
Because if I run into him, there’s no telling what might happen

(She goes into the building, just as Jack comes out)

CHRIS
Oh, hi

JACK
Hi

TRU
Jack?

JACK
Hey

TRU
What are you doing here?

JACK
Moving in

TRU
You’re kidding?

JACK
No, I saw the “For Rent” sign, and snapped it up. Lucky for me actually, the landlord said the guy that was supposed to take it missed the deadline because he had to run it by his girlfriend or something

[Flashback: :LUC: “the thing is, it’s in the building across the street from yours, and I just didn’t want you feeling crowded”]

JACK (cont’d)
But his loss is my gain. Third floor, great view. Unbelievable

TRU
So I’ve heard

JACK
Anyway, I gotta get started with the packing process. I’ll see you later on

(He moves away, then turns back again)

Tru, um, your friend who I just met, she wouldn’t happen to be single, would she?

TRU
I’m not sure a new guy is what she needs right now. Besides, a word of advice: Girls don’t appreciate being hit on by their neighbours

JACK
You need to find some more interesting neighbours

TRU
Maybe you need to find some less desperate tenants

JACK
Ouch!

TRU
Look, she’s having guy trouble right now, okay?

JACK
A bad break-up?

TRU
Not exactly

JACK
All right fine, don’t tell me. I’ll find out on my own soon enough

 (he goes to leave)

TRU
Hey, wait. The truth is, there’s this guy that’s been harassing her and the last thing she needs is…

JACK
Two

TRU
Yeah

JACK
Enough said

TRU
Okay

JACK
Hey you know, Tru, if that other guy really is a problem, I wouldn’t mind keeping an eye on her. I know you think I’m heartless, but I have been known to show an interest in people…other than myself

TRU
Thanks, but I’ve got it under control

JACK
I’d expect no less

(He walks away. Tru’s cellphone rings)

TRU
Hello?

Cut to: DAVIS at the Morgue
Hi, it’s me. I found your logo, and your identity thief

Cut to: TRU
Really?

Cut to: DAVIS
It’s a company called Advantix. They sell medical equipment. And there is a salesman there by the name of Chris Berenson

Cut to: TRU
You get an address?

Cut to: DAVIS
I don’t need to. He’s coming to the morgue in about 20 minutes to make a presentation

Cut to: TRU
You made an appointment with the guy?

Cut to: DAVIS
Well I told him we weren’t happy with our current distributor, and I thought, you’re always chasing the bad guy, why not make him come to you for once?

Cut to: TRU
Nice, D. I’ll see you in 20

DAVIS (voice-over)
Okay

Cut to: Shot of City Morgue building – DAY

18. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Tru enters the room, Davis is in there with Chris Berenson)

DAVIS
This is my colleague, Tru. This is Chris Berenson

 (Chris turns round and smiles)

CHRIS
Hi

[Flashback: CHRIS (dead): “Please save me!”]

CHRIS (cont’d)
This is my first sales call to a morgue. Most of our equipment is designed to keep the patient out of a place like this

TRU
Everyone passes through sooner or later

CHRIS
Right. Um, anyway, let me…let me show you guys what might be useful

 (he hands them a leaflet)

DAVIS
Had this job long, Mr Berenson?

CHRIS
Eight, nine months. Why?

TRU
Does it pay well?

CHRIS
Only if you buy what I sell

DAVIS
I guess you don’t sell that much

(Chris looks at Tru and Davis, getting the feeling something is going on)

CHRIS
All right…who are you people?

TRU
I think who you are is the bigger question

CHRIS
What?

DAVIS
We know who the real Chris Berenson is, and you are not her. And it’s only a matter of time before the police figure that out

CHRIS
Right. She’s good, I’ll give her that. She pulled a fast one on you guys

TRU
I don’t think you get it…

CHRIS
No, I do. You don’t get it. All right? The police are on my side, except they’re too inept to do anything about it. Look, I’m the real Chris Berenson, okay? Here, see? (he shows Davis his licence) See? (he shows it to Tru) All right? She stole my identity, and if you guys know who she is, you’d better talk some sense into her before I find her myself!

(Chris slams the briefcase shut and storms out of the morgue. Camera close-up on Tru)

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images in sequence]

19. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(A sheet of paper prints out of the fax machine. Davis is finishing on the telephone)

TRU (gesturing to the sheet of paper)
The DMV has his picture on file from the early 90’s

DAVIS
And the state police confirm there were six identity theft reports filed by a man named Chris Berenson

TRU
Looks like he’s the real deal

DAVIS
Which means the girl you met in the Diner isn’t

TRU
She probably only gave me that name because it was the one on the credit card she was using. I’ve spent the day trying to help a con woman while the guy that needs my help wants nothing to do with me

DAVIS
Well, helping the criminal may be the only way to help the victim. Since the real Chris won’t talk to you, you need to focus on the fake one. See if you can’t keep her from committing a murder today

TRU
Right

(Her cellphone rings, she answers it)

Hello?

JACK (voice-over)
It’s Jack

TRU
What’s up?

Cut to: JACK walking along the street
I thought you’d wanna know, your friend’s on the move

Cut to: TRU
She left the building?

Cut to: JACK
Yeah. but don’t worry, I’m keeping an eye on her

TRU (voice-over)
You followed her?

JACK
Well you seemed worried about her; I figured I was doing you a favour

TRU (voice-over)
Where is she now?

JACK
She’s headed back into your neighbourhood. But about an hour ago, she was in a jewellery store downtown

Cut to: TRU
Did she buy anything?

Cut to: JACK
Yeah, a necklace. But she didn’t keep it long. She walked six blocks to a pawn shop and sold it for half of what she just paid for it. Crazy, huh? Ah, she’s almost home now. She’s all yours. I got some errands to run

Cut to: TRU
Wait, Jack…

Cut to: JACK
You gotta let me hang up so you can miss me

Cut to: TRU
Cute, but, no. You followed her, I can’t help wondering why

Cut to: JACK
She looked like she might be in trouble. And aside from a little white-collar crime, she’s harmless

Cut to: TRU
Just be careful. She’s not exactly who she seems

Cut to: JACK
Who is?

Cut back to Tru and Davis. She hangs up the phone

DAVIS
Jack is following her?

TRU
He was trying to help

DAVIS
Oh listen, I want you to take this before you go…

(he scribbles on a post-it note)

It’s the name and the number of the cop I talked to, just in case

(Tru takes it and looks at it)

[Flashback: Tru looking at the note with “Call Tom Forrester” on it]

TRU
Who’s Tom Forrester?

DAVIS
He’s an old college buddy of mine. I haven’t talked to him in years, why?

TRU
Yesterday, you had a note to call him. Remember to find out what it is you wanna tell me, we have to keep the days as similar as possible

DAVIS
Okay, I’ll give him  a ring

TRU
Okay

(She walks out of the room)

DAVIS
He’s a hell of a guy. Great Dungeon Master

(Tru pokes her head back into the room)

Oh God, did I just say that out loud?

Cut to: Shot of Waterside Café – DAY

20. INT. Café. DAY.
(Lindsay sits alone on a stool, tapping her fingers on the table. Her cellphone rings, she looks at it, smiles and answers)

LINDSAY
Harrison

Cut to: HARRISON walking along the street
Look, ah, about today, I, er…

LINDSAY (voice-over)
Let me guess. Not gonna work for you

HARRISON
No, not so much

Cut to: LINDSAY
You lost all my stuff, didn’t you?

Cut to: HARRISON
No! It’s not that, it’s just…it just isn’t the best day for it

Cut to: LINDSAY
Why not?

Cut to: HARRISON
Well because, I gotta, uh…the…uh…well, it just isn’t, okay?

Cut to: LINDSAY
Fine. Whatever. We’ll just do it tomorrow. Same time, same place

Cut to: HARRISON
I’ll be there. I promise

LINDSAY (voice-over)
Yeah. Bye

HARRISON (hanging up)
You’d better be right about this, Tru

Cut to: Lindsay, she puts her phone back in her bag and stands up to go

RANDALL
Excuse me, miss…

Randall, the guy who was staring at her yesterday, leans over and picks up a book Lindsay was about to leave behind

RANDALL (cont’d)
Wouldn’t want you to forget this

LINDSAY (recognising him)
Randall?

RANDALL
Lindsay? Hey!

LINDSAY (laughing)
Oh my God…

21. EXT. Chris’s apartment block. DAY.
((Fake) Chris walks up to the main door. Tru runs across the street towards her)

TRU
You feel like telling me who you really are?

CHRIS
I already told you, I’m Chris Beren…

TRU
Look, don’t bother. I know that you’re not. Just like I know that you’ve been buying jewellery with someone else’s credit card and pawning it off for quick cash

CHRIS
How did you know that?

TRU
It doesn’t really matter. It’s just time for you to stop it already. Just give this guy Chris his life back

CHRIS
I will. Someday

TRU
Someday isn’t soon enough. Trust me on this

CHRIS
I don’t trust anyone. That’s why I’m so good at what I do

 (she goes into the building)

TRU
Hey!

CHRIS
Stay out of it, Tru. You’re in over your head

Cut to: Shot of Tru’s apartment block – DAY

22. INT. Stairwell inside Tru’s apartment block. DAY.
(Tru is running up the stairs and bumps into Matt)

MATT
Oh, hey Tru. What a nice surprise, how’s it going?

TRU
Good, thanks. Oh, hey, I got a package for you delivered to me inadvertently this morning. Do you wanna come up and…

[Flashback: MATT: “Well, there’s this girl…”, TRU: “Right”, MATT: “I’ve been wanting to ask her out”]

You know what? I’ll just drop it off later. I’ll save you the time, okay?

MATT
No, I’d be happy to come by. I’d love to see your place

TRU
I’m actually just in a hurry, so…

MATT
Oh, okay. Hey, can I ask you one question?

TRU
Sorry, I’m right in the middle of something. But I’ll catch up with you later, okay?

MATT
Oh…

(Tru has already hurried away. Matt turns around and walks down the stairs)

23. INT. Tru’s apartment. DAY.
(Tru is watching out of her rear window, watching the fake Chris, and on the phone to Davis)

DAVIS (voice-over)
What is she doing now?

TRU
Looks like she’s packing

DAVIS (voice-over)
Well, that’s good, right? Maybe you spooked her enough so she’ll be gone by the time the real Chris Berenson shows up

TRU
Maybe, but we can’t count on it

Cut to: DAVIS at the Morgue
I talked to Tom Forrester by the way

Cut to: TRU
And?

Cut to: DAVIS
Well, he told me about his wife and his kids and his research after leaving the Schenkman Center but certainly nothing I need to discuss with you

Cut to: TRU
Well, it was worth a shot

Cut to: DAVIS
You don’t think that the important thing has anything to do with the kidney stone I passed last week, do you?

Cut to: TRU
Uh…

Cut to: DAVIS
Okay, probably not. I’ll keep looking

Cut back to Tru. She hangs up, still staring at Chris through the window. Then she turns around and walks out

Cut to: Street – DAY

24. EXT. Chris’s apartment block. DAY.
(Tru presses the buzzer to Chris’s apartment)

TRU (through the intercom)
Look, I know you think you can handle this, but you’re the one in over her head!

Cut to: Chris in the apartment. Tru’s voice comes over the intercom system

It’ll only get worse. Running won’t solve anything.

Cut back to Tru, outside

Either let me help you, or I’ll tell the police where to find you. Your choice

(Nothing happens. Tru is about to give up and leave when the door buzzes open)

25. INT. Chris’s apartment. DAY.

CHRIS (crying)
It was just so easy, you know? Like free money. And at first, I only did it to get by. But now, I…Oh God, you gotta believe me. I had no idea it would go this far

TRU
Okay. But it has. And now we have to do something about it

CHRIS
I’m scared…the messages this guy’s been leaving for me…what if I paid him back? Do you think he would still turn me in to the police?

TRU
You could pay him back?

CHRIS
Yeah, I could give him cash

TRU
Really, you have that much money?

CHRIS
I told you I was good

TRU
If only that were something to be proud of

Cut to: Shot of the Standard Diner Café – NIGHT

26. INT. Diner. NIGHT.
(Tru and Chris are sitting in a booth, she is still crying. Chris Berenson enters the Diner)

CHRIS
You. You turned me life upside down!

TRU
She wants to make amends. That’s why I called you

CHRIS
Sure. Sure, now that I know where to find her

FAKE CHRIS
I’m so sorry

CHRIS
You’re sorry?

FAKE CHRIS
No, I really am

CHRIS
Sorry doesn’t cover it.

FAKE CHRIS
Well, here. Maybe this will

(she hands over a large envelope. Chris takes it, and looks inside. It’s full of dollar bills)

It’s all there. Plus 5 per cent. It’s the least I can do, with you giving me a second chance. Oh, I almost forgot, here…the credit card I took out in your name

(she hands over the credit card)

CHRIS
If I ever hear from you again, or if I see you…

FAKE CHRIS
You won’t. I Promise

CHRIS
Fine. I have a phone call to make. And you. You should be gone when I get back

(He walks over to the telephone. Tru and the fake Chris stand up and walk over to the cash register)

FAKE CHRIS
Thanks, Tru. I know you probably don’t care…but my real name is Cathy

TRU
It’s nice to meet you Cathy

FAKE CHRIS
Oh, here, let me get this

TRU
Oh, no, I got it. This one’s on me

(she places her credit card on the table)

FAKE CHRIS
Thank you again…for everything

Cut to: Shot of Tru’s neighbourhood – NIGHT

27. EXT. Jack’s apartment block. NIGHT.
(Jack is struggling with two boxes. Tru walks up)

TRU
Hey

JACK
Ah, you caught me using a city vehicle for personal business

(Tru takes one of the boxes off him)

TRU (smiling)
What vehicle? Hey, I wanna thank you. For helping me out today

JACK
Hey, it’s nothing you wouldn’t have done for me. (he takes the box from her) Thanks

TRU
Still, I mean, you took it upon yourself to look out for someone I told you was in trouble, no questions asked

JACK
Should I have asked some?

TRU
Well, I can’t help thinking most people would

JACK
Hey, whatever’s going on between you and your friend, it’s none of my business

TRU
Never stopped you before

JACK
All right, fine. Tell me

TRU
And if I don’t?

JACK
Well, I’d ply you with alcohol and pry it out of you

TRU
Right…

JACK
Or you’ll owe me one. Hey, lock up the van for me, will you?

TRU
Keys?

JACK
Uh, they must be inside

(Tru opens the driver side door and looks around. She spots the keys lying on Jack’s jacket, and on top of a letter. She picks it up: its addressed to Jack and headed “The Schenkman Center”)

[Flashback: DAVIS: “I talked to Tom Forrester”, TRU: “And?”, DAVIS: “He told me about his research after leaving The Schenkman Center”]

Confused, Tru puts the letter down and climbs out of the van. When she turns round, Jack is standing there

TRU
Oh, here you go. Guess you can lock up yourself

JACK
Thanks

Cut to: Shot of Standard Diner Café – NIGHT

28. INT. Diner. NIGHT.
(The real Chris Berenson walks over to the counter)

CHRIS
Hey

WAITRESS
Hey

CHRIS
Uh, could I get a roast beef sandwich to go?

WAITRESS
Sure thing

 (Chris hands over a note)

Nothing smaller?

CHRIS
No, not tonight

(The waitress puts the bill underneath the ultraviolet light and it starts beeping)

WAITRESS
I’m sorry, but this bill’s a fake

CHRIS (angrily)
You gotta be kidding me!

(He storms out of the Diner)

Cut to: Shot of Tru’s apartment block – NIGHT

29. INT. Corridor. NIGHT.
(Tru is walking back to her apartment, and is on the cellphone)

TRU
You said your friend Tom worked at The Schenkman Center, right?

Cut to: DAVIS
Right

Cut to: TRU
Did you mention Jack when you spoke to him?

Cut to: DAVIS
No, why would I?

Cut to: TRU
Jack had a letter from The Schenkman Center in his coat. I bet you found it first yesterday

Cut to: DAVIS
Well, why don’t I give Tom another call

Cut to: TRU
Yeah, just let me know what he says, okay?

DAVIS (voice-over)
Okay

(Tru enters her apartment, and immediately notices the box for Matt on the floor)

TRU
Here we go again

30. EXT. Jack’s apartment block. NIGHT.
(An angry Chris Berenson walks up to the main doors and rattles them; he presses the buzzer several times. Jack walks up behind him)

JACK
Hey, lock yourself out?

CHRIS
Yeah, yeah, it happens to me at least once a week

JACK
Here. I’m sorry, I’m the new tenant

(Jack gets out his keys and opens the door)

CHRIS
I appreciate it

JACK
I bet…here you go

CHRIS
Thank you

(As he enters the apartment, the fake Chris/Cathy hurries out of the fire exit and down the street)

Cut to: Shot of Tru’s apartment block – NIGHT

31. INT. Matt’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Tru walks up to the door, its slightly open, so she walks in.)

TRU
Matt?

(There is a torch on the floor, its light the only light in the apartment. Tru walks further inside, putting the box down. She looks at his computer, which has a picture of the fake Chris/Cathy on the screen. Tru presses the button “Start slideshow”, and it flips through dozens of pictures of Cathy, leaning out her window, reading a book, unaware she is being photographed)

[Flashback: CHRIS/CATHY: “Now I feel like someone’s been watching me”]

(Tru glances up at the wall: it’s full of pictures of Cathy, doing different things, some of them showing only parts of her body, close-ups, and full body shots)

[Flashback: MATT: “Well, there’s this girl…and she lives nearby”]

(Tru walks over to the window: there is a camera set up there. She looks through it: it’s pointed at Cathy’s apartment. The real Chris Berenson is in there at that moment, he looks like he is looking for something)

TRU
Chris? What is he doing?

(As Tru watches, she sees Matt come into view. He dives for Chris and they both fall to the ground)

Matt?

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images in sequence]

32. EXT. Cathy’s apartment block. NIGHT.
(Tru rattles the doors, trying to get in. She presses a buzzer)

TRU
Come on, come on

JACK (on intercom)
Hello?

TRU
Jack, it’s Tru. I need to get in

Cut to: JACK inside, talking to the intercom
Hey Tru. What are you doing on this side of the street?

Cut to: TRU
Please Jack, I need to get into Cathy’s apartment right away

Cut to: JACK
Cathy? Who’s Cathy?

Cut to: TRU
Chris! Chris is Cathy! The girl that you followed. Please, Jack, hurry!

Cut to: JACK
Okay, um, let me just try and figure this thing out…

(He presses a few buttons)

Huh. It’s trickier than I thought

 (He presses a couple more)

Did that do it?

Cut to: Tru, outside. An old lady comes out of the door, Tru seizes her chance

TRU
Thanks, excuse me

Cut to: JACK
Tru? Did that do it? Tru? Tru?

32. INT. Cathy’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Chris throws Matt across the room, into a cabinet, knocking a lamp flying. Matt scrambles up and punches Chris in the face)

MATT
I’m telling you, stay away from her! She’s a nice girl!

(He holds Chris across the throat, raising a stone ornament in his hand. Tru appears behind them)

TRU
Put it down, Matt!

MATT
He broke into her apartment, Tru, he wants to hurt her!

TRU
I know you wanna protect her, but you don’t know anything about her

MATT
Yes I do! I watched her every single day since she moved in! I know her better than anyone

TRU
No, she’s not who you think. Look, she’s a thief. She stole this man’s identity

MATT
No, she can’t be. She’s perfect! She would never do that!

TRU
Its okay, Matt. You’re not the only one that she’s fooled. But I’m telling you the truth, she’s stolen thousands of dollars. She’s ruined people’s lives

MATT
She’s a thief?

TRU
I’m sorry

(Matt drops Chris on the ground, and then drops the stone ornament)

MATT
I’m sorry!

(He runs out of the apartment)

TRU
Are you okay? Why did you come here? I thought that we had an agreement

CHRIS
Yeah, we did. Until I found out that the money she gave me was fake. Now she’s gone, I’m still broke, and I’m probably never gonna see her again

TRU
You never know. Stranger things have happened

Cut to: Shot of Avalon Car Rental

33. INT. Car Rental reception. NIGHT.
 (Cathy is waiting impatiently)

CATHY
I don’t understand what’s taking so long. It’s been, like, 45 minutes already!

RECEPTIONIST
I’m very sorry

CATHY
Did my card not go through?

RECEPTIONIST
Oh, the card number’s fine, but our computer’s down. Just give us another minute, we’ll get you all sorted out, Miss Davies

TRU (off-screen)
Heading outta town, Tru?

(Camera pans across to show Tru standing in the doorway)

You know, it’s a good thing I don’t believe every sob story I hear

CATHY
Mine, for example?

TRU
You almost had me. But then you absolutely blew it back there at the diner

[Flashback: TRU: “This one’s on me”. She places her card down on the counter, and Cathy slyly takes a photo of it with her mobile phone]

You pulled out your camera cell phone the second I put my credit card down. All I had to do was call the credit card company to report a stolen credit card. I knew you had the number but I was hoping that you wouldn’t use it. And then I got the call

[Flashback: Tru answers her cellphone: “Hello?” WOMAN(voice-over): Miss Davies? There’s activity reported on your credit card at Avalon Car Rental”. TRU: “Thank you”]

CATHY
Is it too late for me to explain?

TRU
To me? Yeah. But I know a couple of guys who’d be happy to listen

(Behind Tru, a police car drives up, sirens wailing)

Cut to: Shot of Tru’s apartment block – NIGHT

34. INT. Tru’s apartment block corridor. NIGHT.
(Tru is walking back towards her apartment, on the cellphone)

TRU
Really? You had a good day?

Cut to: LINDSAY
Oh, it was the best, Tru. The perfect afternoon with the perfect guy

Cut to: TRU
Wait, you were with my brother?

Cut to: LINDSAY
Eugh, no. Harrison was his usual self, called to cancel after I was already there. But that’s how I spotted Randall

Cut to: TRU
Randall?

Cut to: LINDSAY
Yeah, I met him a few years ago when I was studying abroad. He’s actually in town for a few weeks, and he’s the total opposite of your brother

(Tru reaches her apartment and goes in)

TRU
Well, lucky break

Cut to: LINDSAY
Yeah, just when I was starting to think they didn’t make them like this anymore

Cut to: TRU
Yeah, I know what you mean

Cut to: Lindsay, she has reached Randall, waiting beside his car. She smiles at him

LINDSAY
Good night Tru

Cut to: Shot of Tru’s apartment block. NIGHT.

35. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
 (Tru is on her cellphone)

LUC (on answerphone, voice-over)
Hey, it’s Luc. I couldn’t get to the phone right now. Leave me a message

TRU
Hey, Luc. It’s me, Tru. Um, so I heard through the grapevine that you missed out on that apartment across the street, and I just wanted to call and say that I’m sorry.

Cut to: Luc, in his darkroom, standing watching the answerphone

I know that we’re not together anymore, but it would have been nice to be neighbours, just to know you were close. I’ll talk to you soon, I just wanted to call…okay, bye

Cut back to Tru. She hangs up the receiver and is about to replace it in its holder, when it rings, displaying “Incoming Call, City Morgue”

TRU
Luc?

Cut to: DAVIS at the Morgue
No, Tru, it’s me. I’m sorry

Cut to: TRU
Oh, sorry, I just saw the morgue number and I thought he was working tonight. What’s up?

Cut to: DAVIS
I talked to my friend at Schenkman. What I had to tell you was definitely about Jack. Turns out he was a patient there

Cut to: TRU
A patient? But Schenkman’s a psychiatric facility

Cut to: DAVIS
Well it seems like he was there voluntarily. He checked himself in, so he could check himself out

Cut to: TRU
Well, we knew something was off with Jack, but…

(She looks through her window, seeing Jack across in the building opposite)

DAVIS (voice-over)
There’s more…when he committed himself he thought he was going crazy, but the doctors couldn’t diagnose it

TRU
Going crazy how?

Cut to: DAVIS
He thought he was reliving days

Cut to: TRU
Reliving days? What, like me?

Cut to: DAVIS
Exactly like you

(Tru lowers the phone and stares across at Jack. He is looking out of his blinds. Then he closes them)
