1. EXT. Alley. NIGHT.
(A young black lady runs through the alley, splashing through puddles. A second later, a man follows after her. The lady runs until she reaches metal gates, they are padlocked. She pulls at them desperately)

“NICK”
It’s the end of the line, Maggie

(He pulls out a flick knife)

“MAGGIE”
Please, Nick, I promise I won’t tell anyone what I know

“NICK” (advancing on her)
You’re right. You won’t

(He stabs her in the stomach and she falls to the ground, dead. He walks away with the bloody knife. Camera close up on her face)

2. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Davis points to the television screen)

DAVIS
See? That’s her. That’s her right there, that’s Carly Anders

TRU
Right, the girl from all those teen movies

DAVIS
Well she put an album out also, so…

TRU
And I care because?

DAVIS
Because she’s gonna be spending the day with us tomorrow

TRU
Okay, remind me again why some actress is coming here?

DAVIS
I told you, because she’s playing a morgue attendant in her next movie. She wants to make sure that she has all the technical aspects of the role

TRU
That’s not what I meant. I don’t get why she’s coming here, to our morgue

DAVIS
A hometown girl. Her mom and 8-year-old sister live nearby. Two birds with one stone, I guess

TRU
Okay

(She starts to get up from her seat then notices the computer screen)

Hey, hey, what’s this?

Shot of the computer screen – it’s a table of all the people Tru has saved, and a graph of the days of the week do-over days fall on

TRU (cont’d)
“Relived days versus non-relived days, victim’s sex, manner of death”

DAVIS
Well its personal data of everyone that you’ve saved so far. I’m using it to look for recurring patterns among would-be victims. So if a body comes into the morgue, we’ll know how likely it is to ask for help. Did you know that you’re most likely to be asked for help on Mondays and Thursdays?

Shot of the graph on the computer – Mondays and Thursdays bars are by far higher than the other days

DAVIS (cont’d)
Or that there’s an 83% chance that the killer is someone that the victim is close to?

TRU
Does it say anything about my mother?

DAVIS
I’m not sure that I understand…

TRU
Does it say why she didn’t tell me about reliving days? That she could do it too?

DAVIS
I’m sure she would have, but she just ran out of time

TRU
I mean she must have known that there was some chance she would pass it on to one of her kids, but she never told us. She never prepared us. I mean, not one word

DAVIS
Look, I know that you’re angry about…

TRU
I just wish your research could tell me that. Not just that I won’t be getting any Mondays or Thursdays off for a while

JACK (off-screen)
That’s perfect

Camera pans over to show Jack in the doorway. He walks into the room

Because I’ll take all the Mondays I can get. Big TV night for me. Is that the new schedule?

DAVIS & TRU (in unison)
No

(Davis clicks it off the screen)

DAVIS
It’s nothing. But I’ll post the new schedule in the morning

(Jack raises his eyebrows)

TRU
Okay. Bye

(she leaves the room)

JACK
You know, Tru, I was thumbing through the intake records this morning, and I couldn’t help but notice you’ve never been on a pickup

TRU
That’s ridiculous. I’ve…

DAVIS
No. Not one. You’re right. And that’s my fault, and I’m sorry. And Jack, thanks for pointing that out. Thank you

JACK
Anytime

(He walks away. Tru walks back into the room)

DAVIS
All your pickups have been on relived days, you remember? It’s like it never happened

TRU
Do you think he heard us?

DAVIS
We so need a secret lair

3. EXT. Car showroom. DAY.
(Tru is asleep in a car. Harrison is arguing with the salesman)

HARRISON
Twenty two hundred? Please, sir, don’t insult me. This is a hunk of junk. What, are you out of your mind? That’s an insult

MONTY
This vehicle is six years old, has under 30,000 miles. Twenty-two hundred is a steal

(Tru wakes up in the car)

HARRISON (off-screen)
Yeah, “steal” being the operative word

(Tru gets out the car and walks over to Harrison and Monty)

MONTY (to Tru)
Would you like a cup of coffee? Got some brewing in the office

TRU
Sorry. I just got off the night shift

MONTY
Oh really? Where do you work?

TRU
I work over at the county…

HARRISON (interrupting)
Oh! Sidebar, you and me, right now

(Tru and Harrison move away from Monty)

HARRISON
What did we say about sharing personal info with the used car guy? Hmm? Once they think you’ve got cash, they jack up the price

TRU
All I said was I work the night shift

HARRISON
Look, just stick to the plan. Talking to dead people – your thing. Haggling – mine

TRU
Fine

(They walk back over to Monty)

HARRISON
Yeah, she’ll give you two grand for it, Monty. Not a penny more

(Monty smiles and holds out a hand)

MONTY
Deal

HARRISON
Hey

MONTY
I’ll start the paperwork. Coffee, right?

(He walks away)

TRU
Why do I get the feeling he would have gone lower than two grand?

HARRISON
Hey, at least you got a set of wheels now. So you can do your girly stuff and go save dead people. All the things that you like to do

(Tru smiles at him)

I gotta go. Lindsay wants to prep me for dinner with her sister tonight

TRU
All right

HARRISON
Wish me luck!

TRU
Luck

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue building

4. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Davis and Tru walk towards the elevator)

DAVIS
So remember, celebrities are just like you and me, only famous. Try to keep it cool

TRU
I’ll try

(They both sigh, nervously, standing outside the elevator. It dings, and opens. Carly Anders and her personal assistant walk out)

CARLY
Hi! You must be Davis

(She holds out her hand to him. He stares at her, eyes wide, star-struck. Tru holds out her hand instead)

TRU
Tru Davies

CARLY (shaking it)
Carly Anders, and this is my assistant, Anna

TRU
Hi

ANNA
Hi, nice to meet you

(They look at Davis. He hasn’t moved a muscle)

5. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Tru is showing Carly around)

TRU
So, this is the standards room where a body gets processed

CARLY
After its been picked up from a crime scene

TRU
Right

CARLY
That’s part of a morgue attendant’s job, right? To retrieve the body?

TRU
Typically, yeah

CARLY
But what if there isn’t a body? I mean, what if you get to a crime scene, and it looked like a murder had taken place, but the body was gone?

TRU
Tell me where you’re going with this?

CARLY
Well, the reason I ask is that in the first act of this movie, my character issues a death certificate for a guy who vanishes while hiking in the mountains

TRU
So you’re wondering why you’d do that if there wasn’t a body?

(Carly nods)

CARLY
Exactly

TRU
Well, under certain circumstances, a coroner’s office can declare a person legally dead without a body. It’s called a Certificate of Presumptive Death

CARLY
Let me ask you another question. So how’d you get into this line of work?

TRU
Well, I had an internship lined up to help me get into med school, and when that fell through, I kind of ended up here

CARLY
I used to wanna be a doctor when I was a kid. But then the acting thing took off and you know how it is when you find your calling. You gotta answer it

TRU
Yeah, I know what you mean. But I mean, judging by your success, it seems like you made the right choice

CARLY
I’m not so sure, sometimes. I mean all the pressure, the hours…putting up with the media. It gets to you after a while. Maybe I should work here, dead people are much less demanding

TRU
Actually, you’d be surprised

Cut to: Shot of the City buildings

6. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Lindsay and Harrison are walking along together, arm in arm)

LINDSAY
Look, I know this probably seems crazy, but Erin? She never likes my boyfriends. And I really want her to like you

HARRISON
Relax, she’s gonna love me

LINDSAY
Well she’d better. We both know how spotty your track record’s been lately

HARRISON
Yeah

LINDSAY
Look I’m just…I’m really counting on you, okay?

(They pass a funeral party, and Harrison notices Jack standing there with a couple of men)

HARRISON
Jackie! What’s going on, man?

JACK
Harrison
(to the men) Excuse me

HARRISON
What is up!

JACK
How are you?

(Harrison looks at the sign on the wall: Anthony Bros. Funeral Home)

HARRISON
Oh…you at a…a funeral?

JACK
Yeah. A friend of mine passed away. I came to pay my respects

HARRISON
Wow, I’m sorry to hear that

LINDSAY
Yeah, me too

JACK (to Lindsay)
Hi

LINDSAY
Hey

HARRISON
Oh! Jack, Lindsay. Lindsay, Jack

LINDSAY
Jack. Yeah, Harrison’s told me lots about you

JACK
You know, I was about to go get a drink. Would you guys like to join me? I know its early, but its kinda been one of those days, you know?

LINDSAY
Um, I actually have a tonne of stuff to do before tonight, but if you think you can squeeze a drink in before dinner, then…

HARRISON
Are you kidding? Probably knock back three or four, huh?

(Lindsay looks at him)

But we won’t

7. INT. Morgue. DAY.

TRU
She was really nice, Davis. Totally down to earth, not at all what I expected. I mean, someone I could totally hang with

DAVIS
Yeah, if she wasn’t going back to Hollywood tomorrow

TRU
It’s not just that. This whole superhero thing, all the running around I do…it’s hard enough to keep the friends I have, let alone make new ones

DAVIS
Well traditionally, superheroes don’t have many friends. Just a close-knit group of allies and confidants

TRU
Well I’m 22 years old Davis, I need more than allies and confidants

(A door opens and a man walks into the room beyond theirs)

TRU
Hey, can I help you?

MAN (leaning into the room)
Yeah, I’m looking for Carly Anders

TRU
Oh, you just missed her

MAN
Oh, shoot. I was really hoping to catch up with her

TRU
She a friend of yours?

MAN
We go way back. Say, you wouldn’t happen to know where she was heading?

TRU
Her mom’s I think. You could try her there

MAN
Thanks, I will

TRU
Okay

(He smiles and walks away)

Well, Davis, I’ll see you tomorrow. It’s been kind of a long day

DAVIS
Tru, um, about your mother. Maybe she never told you because she didn’t think you were ready to understand

TRU
Well I guess we’ll never know, will we? Bye

8. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Tru gets into her new car. She starts it, and the engine sputters, then dies.)

TRU
Oh, no. No…

Cut to: Shot of the “Nicky St. Hubbins” bar

9. INT. Bar. DAY.
(Harrison and Jack are drinking a toast)

HARRISON
To new friends

JACK
You know, its never easy being the new guy in town, I just wanted to say thanks for making it not quite so hard

HARRISON
Well, hey

(They drink, and then Jack starts laughing)

What’s so funny, friend?

JACK
Just picturing your sister’s face when she finds out we hung out

HARRISON
Yeah, yeah, don’t take it personal. You know Tru

JACK
No, actually, I don’t. I mean, we work in the same place, we talk every day, we work side by side, but I can’t really say I know her

HARRISON
She’s cool, bro

JACK
No doubt she is

HARRISON
She’s like me. She’s, like, loyal…but she’s…she’s smart as hell. And she works her tail off

JACK
Tell me about it. She comes in off-shift, practically memorizes the stats of all the corpses. That job…it’s like she lives for it, you know?

HARRISON
Understatement of the year

JACK
What’s that?

HARRISON
What’s what?

JACK
Something about your sister I should know?

HARRISON
What? No, er…

(His cellphone rings)

Ah…talk to me

Cut to: Tru, standing by the bonnet of her car, the engine smoking

TRU
Nice job. My car is a lemon

Cut to: HARRISON
What?

Cut to: TRU
It won’t start. Something’s wrong with the engine

Cut to: HARRISON
So we’ll take it back in the morning

Cut to: TRU
Right. I’m sure Monty’s Used Cars has a real accommodating returns policy

HARRISON (voice-over)
I’ll figure something out, I promise

TRU
Look, right now, all I need is a ride home

Cut to: HARRISON
A ride home? (he checks his watch) Look, I’d love to help you out Tru

Cut to: TRU
But?

Cut to: HARRISON
But I gotta go home, get ready. If I don’t look just right tonight, Lindsay is gonna kill me

Cut to: TRU
Whoa, whoa, you’re kidding, right?

Cut to: JACK
Ask her where she is

HARRISON
Where are you?

Cut to: TRU
At the corner of Third and Ogden

Cut to: HARRISON (to Jack)
Third and Ogden

JACK
Tell her I’ll swing by the morgue and pick up a van. I’ll be there in 20 minutes

HARRISON
Oh, my man Jack says he’ll be there in 20 minutes

Cut to: TRU
Jack? No, no, no, I don’t want a ride from Jack

Cut to: HARRISON
Babe? Gift. Horse. Mouth. Need I say more?

Cut to: Shot of the reddening skyline

10. EXT. Street. Evening.
(Jack’s van pulls up beside Tru, who is still sitting in her car)

JACK
So, you wanna ride up front or in the back?

TRU
Very funny

JACK
Harrison sends his love, by the way

TRU
Where were you two, anyway? The racetrack?

JACK
No, actually, we were in a bar

TRU
Oh, much better

JACK
Why do I get the feeling you don’t want me hanging out with your brother?

TRU
Probably because you’re very perceptive

JACK
Harrison’s a nice guy

TRU
Yep, and I’d like to keep him that way

JACK
A guy’s gotta make friends somewhere, Tru

TRU
What’s that supposed to mean?

JACK
You think it’s been easy for me, working in the morgue? I try to be friendly, I try to be a good guy, but every time I walk into a room, you and Davis clam up, or you change the subject, or you leave

TRU
That has nothing to do with you

JACK
Still, it doesn’t exactly make me feel like part of the team

TRU
Jack, if we made you feel left out, I mean that’s not at all what we’re trying…we would never wanna…

(His cellphone rings)

JACK
Apology accepted

(he answers his cell)

Gofer Jack. Yeah? Yeah, I’ll be right there

(he hangs up the cell)

Well, it’s your lucky day, Davies. You’re about to go on your first pickup. Hop in

11. INT. Restaurant. NIGHT.
(Lindsay, Harrison and Lindsay’s sister are sitting down together. Harrison is dressed in a suit, and is pouring wine into their glasses)

HARRISON
I mean, have you noticed this crazy weather we’ve been having lately? I remember it being much, much warmer this time last year

ERIN
I know, isn’t that the strangest thing? I mean, it’s late spring and I’m still in my mid winter wardrobe

HARRISON
Oh, that is a lovely colour on you, by the way

ERIN
Thank you

HARRISON
You’re welcome

(Erin looks over at Lindsay, who smiles and shrugs)

ERIN
Would you excuse me? I’m just gonna powder my nose

HARRISON
Oh, yeah, sure. Excuse me

(He stands while she leaves the table)

LINDSAY
You…are doing awesome

HARRISON
Come on babe, what did you expect? Don’t answer that

Cut to: Shot of the city – night

Cut to: Police car, its sirens wailing, driving over the bridge

Cut to: The river, a diving boat trawling it, looking in the water. As it passes, a crane pulls a car out of the river

12. EXT. Riverside. NIGHT.
(Tru and Jack are walking along with a detective)

DETECTIVE
The deceased called 911 from her car approximately 90 minutes ago. Said she was being pursued by another vehicle as she approached the bridge. Then the line went dead. Three guesses what happened next

JACK
I’m gonna get the gurney. I’ll be right back

TRU
Okay
(to the detective) Do you think she was forced off the road?

DETECTIVE
The divers found a red paint scrape on the driver’s side door. Most likely from the pursuing vehicle

TRU
Who took her body out of the car?

DETECTIVE
She was already washed up onto the shore when we got here. Most likely thrown free on impact

(he sees someone else and walks away calling “Jim!”)

(Tru looks over to the body lying on the ground, partially obscured from view by the police officers standing around. She walks closer and eventually sees its Carly Anders)

TRU
Oh, no. Carly

(Carly’s head turns to face Tru)

CARLY (whispering)
Tru, I need your help!

[Flashes of images as the day rewinds]

13. EXT. Car showroom. DAY.
(Tru jolts awake in the yellow car, at Monty’s Used Cars showroom)

HARRISON (off-screen)
Twenty-two hundred for this hunk of junk? What, are you out of your mind? That’s an insult!

TRU
Oh boy…here we go again

[Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the days images in sequence]

14. EXT. Car showroom. DAY.
(Tru gets out of the car and walks over to Harrison and Monty)

MONTY
Twenty-two hundred is a steal

HARRISON
Yeah, “Steal” being the operative word

TRU
I don’t want it

MONTY
Pardon?

TRU
I don’t want it. I want…

(she looks around the yard, and points to a smart red car)

I want that one

HARRISON
Whoa, whoa, whoa…

(he takes Tru aside)

I thought I was doing the negotiating

TRU
Not today

MONTY
Ah, little lady? I think you’re mistaken. This car is in like-new condition. It’s got at least another 60,000 miles in it

TRU
Actually, it’s got about six miles, and then its gonna die. And I’m not your little lady

HARRISON (whispering)
Did the day restart so you could save a car?

TRU (to Monty)
I’ll give you fifteen hundred for that red one

MONTY
It’s listed at over $2000 dollars…

TRU
Fifteen hundred. Take it or leave it

MONTY (unhappily)
Deal

TRU
Thanks, Monty

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue building

15. INT. Morgue. DAY.

DAVIS
Wait, the Carly Anders as in the Carly Anders who’s getting ready to come down in the elevator?

TRU
Yeah

DAVIS
Oh, God! I’m nervous around regular people, but famous people that are about to die?

TRU
She’s not gonna die, Davis. Not if we have anything to say about it

DAVIS
Well who would’ve thought you’d have been asked for help on Wednesdays?

TRU
Why wouldn’t I be?

DAVIS
Well according to my research, relieved Wednesdays are a statistical rarity. I was gonna make it your regular day off

TRU
No more research. In fact, take it off your computer altogether

DAVIS
Why?

TRU
Jack’s been asking questions. He thinks we’re up to something, and since we are, we should be a little bit more careful, don’t you think?

DAVIS
Well, what about suspects?

TRU
There aren’t any. Not yet, anyway

DAVIS
Well, find out what you can during the tour. We need something to go on here

TRU
Okay

(The lift dings)

And try to be cool today

(The lift opens; Carly and Anna step out)

CARLY
Hi! You must be Davis

(They shake hands. Davis is star struck again. Carly raises her eyebrows at him, Davis seems to snap out of it)

DAVIS
So…did you like the elevator?

16. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Tru is giving Carly Anders the tour around the morgue)

CARLY
What if you got to the crime scene and it looked like a murder had taken place, but the body was gone?

TRU
Well, depending on the circumstances, you’d issue a Certificate of Presumptive Death, which allows the coroner to declare a person legally dead even if there’s no body

CARLY
Really?

TRU
Yeah. So what’s it like coming home after striking it big? Is it weird?

CARLY
Sure it’s weird. But going home is always weird, no matter who you are

TRU
Yeah but do you run into any real jealous types?

CARLY
Here and there

TRU
Anyone who has any big issues with you or…

CARLY
Look, you seem like a real sweet person, but I’d rather not talk about my personal life

TRU
Right. Of course. I was just wondering…

CARLY
Please. Let’s just stick to business, okay?

TRU
Okay

ANNA
Hey, I was just gonna grab some lunch from that diner up the street. Do you want anything?

CARLY
No, I’m good thanks

ANNA
Okay

TRU
Hey, Davis?

(he peers out of his office)

DAVIS
Yeah?

TRU
Would you mind taking over? I’m gonna run to the diner with Anna

DAVIS
Yeah. Would you get me a slice of chocolate…

(Tru shakes her head slyly)

Um, I have a corn dog here so it’s fine

TRU
Okay

Cut to: shot of the Standard Diner

17. INT. Diner. DAY.
(Tru and Anna enter together)

ANNA
I’ve been with Carly for four years now. Best boss I ever had

TRU
So you’re pretty much with her 24/7, huh?

ANNA
More or less

TRU
So you’d know if there was someone who might be holding a grudge against her?

ANNA
A grudge?

TRU
Yeah, I mean, she got so famous, right? Some people might resent that

ANNA
Everybody loves Carly

TRU
So you’re saying you can’t think of one person who might feel otherwise?

ANNA
Well the tabloids have a field day with her. But Carly’s tough. One of the most determined people I’ve ever met

TRU
Really

ANNA
Her mom told me the only time she ever took off was eight years ago, right after a big movie. She was 16 years old and on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Finally, her mom forces her to take a year off. After that, she comes back stronger than ever

TRU
Wow…

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue

18. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Davis is leaning against the window. Tru walks up to him)

TRU
Where’s Carly?

DAVIS
Shh. That guy came in, said he needed to talk to her. I tried to stop him, but she said it was okay

(Tru looks through the window)

TRU
He came looking for Carly yesterday, but she’d left by the time he got here. Have you heard anything they’ve been saying?

DAVIS
They’ve been keeping their voices lowered

CARLY (muffled)
I can’t do this anymore!

(The man walks over to the door and out)

MAN
I’ll see you later Carly

TRU (to Carly)
Is everything okay?

CARLY
Yeah, I’m fine. That was just an old friend

TRU
Didn’t look too friendly to me

CARLY
Yeah well it’s nothing. Anyway, I should be going. Is Anna…?

TRU
Pulling the car around

DAVIS
Hey Carly, are you sure you don’t wanna stay a bit longer? I could autopsy something for you

CARLY
No thank you

TRU
Nice meeting you

CARLY
Yeah, you too

(she walks out)

DAVIS
You just gonna let her leave like that?

TRU
Don’t worry, I’ll be right behind her. After all, I have to return this

(she picks up Carly’s purse from the side)

DAVIS
Did you steal her purse?

TRU
I had to do something. I needed to buy myself some more time

DAVIS
For what?

TRU
To figure out how I’m gonna tell her she’s gonna die tonight

Cut to: Shot of the city buildings

19. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Harrison and Lindsay are walking along, arm in arm)

HARRISON
Relax! She’s gonna love me

LINDSAY
Well she’d better. We both know how spotty your track record’s been lately

HARRISON
Yeah

LINDSAY
Look I’m just…I’m really counting on you, okay?

(They pass a funeral party, and Harrison notices Jack standing there with a couple of men)

HARRISON
Jackie!

JACK
Harrison

20. INT. Bar. DAY.
(Harrison and Jack are sitting at the bar, with their drinks)

JACK
So. Are you all ready for Lindsay’s big test tonight?

HARRISON
Oh…test? No, no, it’s not…it’s um, it’s, you know, er…

JACK
Dinner. Right. You’re a braver man than I am, Harrison. But, hey, if I would have played it safe, maybe I wouldn’t be pushing 30 and all alone

HARRISON
No, safe? No, no, no…it’s…me and Lindsay? We, uh…we click. You know what I’m saying, man?

JACK
I stand corrected. Truth is, I envy you, man. You have what every guy wants, whether he’s man enough to admit it or not

HARRISON (nodding)
Hey

JACK
To you and Lindsay

(he raises his glass)

HARRISON
Me and Lindsay

21. EXT. Carly’s House. DAY.
(Tru walks up the steps and knocks on the door. Carly’s little sister answers it)

TRU
You must be Carly’s sister

ISABELLE
Are you a reporter?

TRU
No. My name’s Tru

ISABELLE
Swear you’re not a reporter?

TRU
Swear

(Isabelle closes the door. A second later, Carly opens it)

CARLY
Oh, Tru

TRU
Hey. Your sister’s adorable, she looks just like you

CARLY
How can I help you?

TRU
Um, well you left this at the morgue, so I just wanted to return it before you left town

CARLY
Thanks

TRU
Anyway I wanted to talk to you about the guy that came to the morgue today

CARLY
Peter?

TRU
Yeah, you two seemed pretty worked up

CARLY
I don’t see how that’s any of your business

TRU
It’s not. But…listen, I’m worried about you

CARLY
Why?

TRU
Because I have a bad feeling

CARLY
So you’re psychic now?

TRU
No, no

CARLY
Look, you’ve been asking strange questions all day. Thanks for dropping off my purse, but I think you should go now

TRU
Carly, if you’re in some kind of trouble, maybe I can help

CARLY
I don’t even know you

TRU
No, not yet, but if you just gave me a chance…

CARLY
We’d be the best of friends

TRU
Carly, please, I’m just…

CARLY
Look…come near me or my family again and I’m calling the police

(she closes the door)

22. EXT. Park. DAY.
(Harrison and Jack walk over the hill and down to the path, on their way to the carpark)

HARRISON
Yo, thanks again, bro. We should do this again some time

JACK
Yeah, we should. Hey look, about what I said back in the bar…

HARRISON
No, no, don’t worry about it

JACK
No, I’ve lost too many buddies to wives and kids. I don’t wanna lose another one

HARRISON
You keep picking up that tab, there ain’t no chance of that

JACK
All right

HARRISON
Hey, you need a lift?

JACK
No man, it’s a nice day. I’m gonna walk. Good luck tonight

HARRISON
Thanks again, man

23. EXT. Car park. DAY.
(Harrison pulls out his car keys and walks up to his car.)

CARJACKER
Leave the keys in the lock, step away from the car!

(He has a gun pushed against Harrison’s temple)

HARRISON
All right, buddy. Take it easy, man. Take it easy, okay, be cool. All right? No problem

(Jack walks into shot, a few feet away)

JACK
Hang on to your keys, Harrison

(The carjacker points the gun at Jack)

CARJACKER
No, you did not just say that

JACK (calmly)
I’m afraid I did

HARRISON (panicking)
Jack, Jack just…

(The carjacker points the gun back on Harrison)

CARJACKER
Keys!

HARRISON
Hey…

JACK
It’s your car, not his

CARJACKER
Shut up!

HARRISON
Look, a guy with a gun asks for keys? Guy with the keys hands it to him, man, that’s how it works

JACK
Not this time. The only way this guy’s gonna get your car is if you give it to him, because he certainly doesn’t have the stones to do it on his own. If he did, we’d be dead already and he’d be nothing but a set of taillights

(The carjacker turns the gun back on Jack)

CARJACKER
You sure about that?

JACK
Oh yeah

[Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the days images in sequence]

24. EXT. Car park. DAY.
(Jack and the Carjacker are staring each other out. Harrison is still panicking)

HARRISON
Look, the car, it’s a piece of crap, man. It ain’t worth it, okay?

CARJACKER (to Harrison)
Five seconds, your boy here’s dead

HARRISON
Jack, Jack, come on, man…

(The carjacker begins to walk towards Jack)

CARJACKER
Five…

HARRISON
Come on, Jack! It ain’t worth it, Jack!

CARJACKER
…four…

HARRISON
Come on, Jack! Hey!

CARJACKER
…three…

(The gun is pointed at Jack’s head)

HARRISON
Jack, man, come on!

JACK
It’s okay, Harrison

CARJACKER
…two…

HARRISON
Look, just let me give him the keys!

CARJACKER
…one…

HARRISON
Jack! No!

Dead silence. Harrison flinches.

JACK (whispering)
Bang!

(The Carjacker stares at Jack, Jack stares back, unblinking. The carjacker uncocks the trigger and runs out of the car park. Jack watches him go, still calm)

HARRISON
What the hell was that, man?

(Jack turns to him, and smiles)

25. EXT. Carly’s House. DAY.
(Tru is sitting in her new car, on the cellphone)

TRU
This was a mistake, she won’t even talk to me now

Cut to: DAVIS at the morgue
She just doesn’t understand you

Cut to: TRU
Yeah, well we were totally cool yesterday, and now thanks to my gift, she thinks I’m a psycho. Which, to be completely honest, I can’t really blame her

Cut to: DAVIS
All that matters now is saving her life, Tru

Cut to: TRU
Yeah I know, it’s just…sooner or later, this gig is gonna cost me all my friends

Cut to: DAVIS
Tru, a hero’s journey is treacherous

Cut to: TRU
Yeah, treachery I can deal with. But being alone kinda sucks

Cut to: DAVIS
Well I’m guessing you weren’t able to find anything out about the guy she was arguing with?

Cut to: TRU
No. Just a name – Peter

DAVIS (voice-over)
What do you think, angry ex or something?

TRU
Sounds about right

Cut to: DAVIS
So what’s the plan now?

Cut to: TRU
Well, stick close to Carly and see what happens, and pray she doesn’t see me

Cut to: DAVIS
Why don’t I meet you there, and I’ll keep you company?

Cut to: TRU
Oh Davis, you don’t have to do that

Cut to: DAVIS
No, I want too. Because, uh…Tru, you’re not…you’re not alone

Cut to: TRU (touched)
Thanks

Cut to: DAVIS
I’ll see you

(he hangs up, and sits looking worried)

Cut to: Tru

(Carly comes out of her house and walks to her car. She drives away and Tru follows her)

26. EXT. Marina. DAY.
(Harrison leans over the railing, looking down at the river, looking very relieved.)

JACK
You okay?

HARRISON
Do I look like a guy who’s okay?

JACK
You look like a guy who’s still got his car

HARRISON
Ohh…oh my God…

JACK
What?

HARRISON
He was gonna kill you man!

JACK
But he didn’t

HARRISON
Look, hey, I am all about standing up for what’s yours, but that was…what, you got some kind of death wish?

JACK
Harrison, death isn’t something you have to wish for. It’s coming anyway

HARRISON
What the hell is that supposed to mean?

JACK
Can I make a confession?

HARRISON
Sure

JACK
I lied to you. Before, when I said an old friend of mine had passed away. I was at a funeral, but I didn’t know the person who died

HARRISON
Did you go to the wrong church, what?

JACK
No. Just something I like to do

HARRISON
Go to stranger’s funerals

JACK
Yeah

HARRISON
For what, kicks?

JACK
No. For clarity

HARRISON (sarcastically)
Oh, right! Oh, jeez…

JACK
I go to remind myself that death is inevitable. Death is part of life. And as soon as you understand that, you’re free. You can do anything you want

HARRISON
So is that what you meant earlier, when you were talking about playing it safe with Lindsay?

JACK
Lindsay. Look, I’m sure Lindsay’s a great girl, but the problem with great girls is, they want great lives. They want a house with a white picket fence and 2.5 kids playing in the yard. Now, I don’t know you that well Harrison, but you strike me as a guy who wants more than that. Who needs more than that. More freedom. More fun. More life

27. EXT. Railway Yard. DAY.
(Carly’s car drives down towards the rail track. Tru drives her car behind some barrels, out of the way. Carly gets out of her car and walks over to where Peter is standing. Tru watches from behind a skip. Carly hands Peter an envelope)

PETER
Oh, there’s more here than what I asked for

CARLY
Consider it a severance package

PETER
That’s not how our arrangement works. You see, I ask you for money, you get it to me. Whether its today, tomorrow, or a year from now

CARLY
And I’ve honoured that arrangement for eight years now. I think that’s long enough

PETER
Not for me. I mean, I appreciate the bonus. But you will be hearing from me again. Count on it

(Carly shakes her head, walks back to her car and drives away. Tru steps back, as Peter comes towards her)

TRU
Why don’t you tell me about your arrangement?

PETER
And you are?

TRU
Someone who cares about Carly. She said you were an old friend before, but you look more like an extortionist to me

PETER
Actually, I’m a reporter for the Sun-Times. What you just saw was an interview for a story, nothing more

TRU
She paid you off, to keep quiet about something that happened eight years ago

PETER
I can neither confirm, nor deny

TRU
Look, what was it, Peter? What happened back then?

(Peter looks at her. Tru thinks about it)

[Flashback: ANNA: “Her mom told me the only time she ever took off was eight years ago”]

[Flashback: Isabelle at the door. TRU: (voiceover) “Your sister’s adorable. She looks just like you”]

TRU
It’s Isabelle. She’s not Carly’s sister. She’s her daughter. Listen to me, whatever it is you’re planning tonight, you can forget it, because if you hurt Carly, I’m going to the police

PETER
Are you kidding? Carly’s little secret helped pay for my summer home. The last thing I’d ever do is hurt her. We done here?

(He drives away, leaving Tru staring after her)

28. EXT. Street. NIGHT.
(Davis walks along alone, talking on his cellphone)

DAVIS
Carly Anders’ sister is really her daughter? Whoa…what a scandal. You don’t think the reporter’s the killer?

Cut to: TRU (in her car outside Carly’s house)
No, Carly’s worth too much to him alive

Cut to: DAVIS (he’s reached his car, he gets in)
Well if not him, then who?

Cut to: TRU
I’m back at Carly’s trying to figure that out

(Tru notices Anna and Carly arguing on the doorstep)

ANNA (muffled)
You’re making too much of this

CARLY
I can’t believe you did this…

TRU
According to your spreadsheet, there’s a large probability that the killer’s someone close to the victim, right?

Cut to: DAVIS
Right

Cut to: TRU
Well who’s closer to Carly than Anna?

CARLY
Just leave me alone!

(Carly walks back into the house, leaving Anna alone on the doorstep)

Cut to: Shot of the restaurant

29. INT. Restaurant. NIGHT.
(Lindsay is sitting alone. A waitress brings her the bill. Harrison walks up, nonchalantly)

HARRISON
Hey, hey, hey. What’s up?

LINDSAY
You were supposed to be here to hours ago. Where the hell have you been?

HARRISON
I lost track of time. No biggie

LINDSAY
Actually, no. It is a biggie. I told you that this was important to me

HARRISON
Well, I’m here now. So, where’s the big sis?

LINDSAY
She left

HARRISON
Oh, well, her loss, right?

LINDSAY
Why are you acting like this?

HARRISON
I don’t know. Why are you acting so clingy?

LINDSAY
What?!

(she throws the pen down on the table)

HARRISON
Exactly what Jack was talking about

LINDSAY
Jack. What does he have to do with us, huh?

HARRISON
You know, sometimes I’m gonna be late. Sometimes I might not show up at all. That’s just something you’re gonna have to deal with

LINDSAY
No, no I won’t. Because if you’re feeling tied down, then by all means, consider yourself untied

HARRISON
Whatever

(He picks up a drink from the table and drinks it. Lindsay looks disgusted)

LINDSAY
We’re through

(she stalks away. Harrison doesn’t look after her)

30. EXT. Carly’s House. NIGHT.
(Anna walks down the steps and onto the path. Tru meets her there)

TRU
Anna…

ANNA
Tru, what are you doing here?

TRU
Carly had a few more questions about the morgue, she asked me to stop by. Is everything okay with you two?

ANNA
Honestly? No

TRU
Why, what happened?

ANNA
I ask Carly if I can borrow her car to run some errands while she’s at her mom’s. She says fine. I get in a fender-bender while I’m out, and she throws a fit

TRU
You were in an accident?

ANNA
Well, I was pulling out of a spot, when this other car just crunched the door, and left a nasty red paint scrape. But so what? It’s just a rental

(Her cellphone rings)

Sorry…Hello?

(Behind them, Davis gets out of his car. Tru goes over to him)

TRU
Oh good, you made it. Anna was in an accident in Carly’s car

DAVIS
What?

TRU
A red car crashed into the driver’s side door. But if the damage occurred before she drove to the bridge…

DAVIS
Maybe she wasn’t forced off the road. Maybe she drove off the bridge herself

TRU
Suicide? No way. I mean, the police said that Carly called 911 and said someone was following her. Why would she do that if she was planning to kill herself? Someone killed her, I know it

DAVIS
But who? And why?

(Behind them, an engine starts and the tyres squeal as Carly drives away in her car)

TRU
Carly…

[Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images in sequence]

31. EXT. Carly’s House. NIGHT.
(Tru runs to her own car and drives off after Carly. Anna is still talking on the phone)

ANNA
But that can’t be right. It doesn’t make any sense. Fine. Yeah, I’ll call you back after I talk to her. Bye

DAVIS
Is everything okay?

ANNA
That was Carly’s agent, and according to him, there is no morgue movie

DAVIS
What?

ANNA
The movie about the morgue attendant, it doesn’t exist. Her next project is supposed to be a romantic comedy

DAVIS
If there’s no morgue movie, then why spend the day with me and Tru?

ANNA
I was just wondering the same thing

32. INT. Tru’s Car. NIGHT.
(Tru’s cellphone rings. She answers it)

TRU
Hello?

Cut to: DAVIS
Carly lied to us. There never even was a morgue movie

Cut to; TRU
What?

Cut to: DAVIS
It doesn’t exist, she made it up

Cut to: TRU
But then why would she come to the morgue? Why would she ask us all those questions?

[Flashback: CARLY: “What if you get to a crime scene and it looked like a murder had taken place, but the body was gone?”]

TRU (cont’d)
Davis, this may sound crazy, but I think she’s trying to fake her own death

Cut to: DAVIS
What’d you say?

Cut to: TRU
Both days she asked me what would happen if I got to a crime scene and there was no body. She needed to make sure that the missing person would still be declared legally dead

Cut to: DAVIS
Why?

Cut to: TRU
Because that was her plan. Fake her own death and disappear. That’s why she spent the day with us, she wanted to get all the details right so no-one would catch on

Cut to: DAVIS
But Carly had everything, why would she do something like that?

Cut to: TRU
Think about what the last eight years have been like for her. Knowing her darkest secret could come out at any time. She must have had enough. Probably thought this was the only way out

Cut to: DAVIS
Well if you’re right then Carly really wasn’t forced off the bridge by another car. And that call to 911…

Cut to: TRU
Also fake

Cut to: DAVIS
There’s just one problem, Tru. Carly didn’t fake her death yesterday She actually died. Otherwise, the day wouldn’t have restarted

Cut to: TRU
Something must have gone wrong. Something that she didn’t plan for

Cut to: DAVIS
Well whatever that something is, you have to get there before it happens

(Tru hangs up the telephone and pulls to a stop by the bridge. The railings are already broken. Tru gets out of the car and runs over to the railing. Below, in the water, half of Carly’s car is still visible.)

TRU
Oh my God…

CARLY (off-screen)
I need help! You have to come now! Someone’s following me, I can’t get away! Please hurry!

(Tru looks over to the other side of the bridge, Carly is talking on her cellphone, climbing over the railing at the other side. She notices Tru)

CARLY
What?!

TRU
Carly, listen to me

CARLY
What are you even doing here?!

TRU
Look, I know what you’re planning on doing, and it isn’t gonna work

CARLY
It will work, as long as you don’t tell anyone!

TRU
That’s not what I meant

CARLY
Please, just leave me alone!

TRU
Carly, I…

(She stops, and looks behind Carly. A truck is coming up fast)

Cut to: The driver of the truck, he isn’t paying attention. His stereo is blaring loudly, and he’s looking down, fiddling with the stereo

TRU
Watch out!

(she leaps forward, pushing Carly out of the way. The truck shoots past, the driver never even noticing they were there)

TRU
The SUV hit you yesterday…that’s how you ended up in the water. That’s how you died

CARLY
Died? What are you talking about?

TRU
I know why you did it, Carly. I know about Isabelle, that she’s your daughter

CARLY
How?

TRU
I figured it out

CARLY
I thought that if word got out, my career would be over

TRU
So you covered it up, for eight years?

CARLY
You don’t know what it’s like, Tru. To have a secret people are trying to expose

TRU
Actually, I do. Because I have a secret too, you know. And there have been plenty of times when I have wanted to run away, pretend it wasn’t a part of me. But I don’t, because there’s someone’s life at stake

CARLY
Whose?

TRU
Tonight, it was yours

CARLY
Someday, someone would have exposed us. I know that. It’s no way to live a life, waking up each morning, wondering if today’s the day the story finally comes out. That’s why I finally told Isabelle the truth a few months ago. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do. It took her some time, but she’s okay with it now, and she wants us to be together. Start a new life

TRU
By faking your death?

CARLY
Look, I’m leaving the country tonight, and I’m taking Isabelle with me. I didn’t wanna go to this extreme, Tru. I tried to buy my way out today, pay off the one person who knew the truth about Isabelle. But he wasn’t about to let the story die. So I had to go to my backup plan

TRU
But if Isabelle’s okay with you being her mother, then why go to all this trouble? Why not just come clean?

CARLY
You think the tabloids would ever leave her alone? Ever let her have a life? Look…I’m sorry if you can’t get away from your secret, Tru. But please…I need to get away from mine

33. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Jack is typing into the computer. Harrison walks in)

HARRISON
Hey, hey, hey

JACK
Oh, hey. I thought you had that thing with Lindsay and her sister

HARRISON
Oh, I did. Dinner, yeah. Uh, didn’t go exactly as planned. Um, she…she ended it. Like: pssht

JACK
I’m sorry to hear that

HARRISON
I should’ve seen it coming, you know? She gives me chance after chance, and you know, I screw up. That’s what I do. I…I screw up

JACK
I know it must be hard losing a girl like Lindsay, but…

HARRISON
Yeah

JACK
Hey, maybe it’s for the best, you know? I mean, all these chances you keep talking about, did it ever occur to you that maybe they were chances for her? Chances for her to change you? Real friends don’t do that, man. Friends accept you for who you are. Appreciate you for who you are

HARRISON
Yeah, yeah, I guess, you know?

JACK
No, don’t guess, Harrison. Know. Now, I know I haven’t known you for very long, but…I’m your friend, man

(he pats Harrison’s shoulder)

No matter what

(His pager beeps)

Oh. Duty calls. I’ll see you soon, yeah?

HARRISON
Thanks, man

Cut to: Shot of the river, a diving boat goes past, looking in the water. It passes a crane, lifting Carly’s car from the water

34. EXT. Riverside. NIGHT.
(Tru and Davis walk down to the riverside)

DAVIS
Are you sure about this?

TRU
Don’t have to be. Can’t say it’s the choice I would have made, but it’s Carly’s life. She can do what she wants

DAVIS
Well. A lot of ways to help people, I guess. Some people need help living, some dying. Some a little bit of both

TRU
I think I finally understand now. She did it to protect her daughter

DAVIS
Well, here’s hoping that Carly pulls it off

TRU
Actually, I wasn’t talking about her. I was talking about my mother

JACK (off-screen)
I don’t get it

(He moves into shot)

Why would they call us and bring us all the way down here if there’s no body to pick up?

DAVIS
Must have jumped the gun when they found the car. Probably figured the body was still in it

TRU
The currents must have washed it away

DAVIS
We may never find it. I’ll see you two back at the office

JACK (to Tru)
It’s too bad. Your first pickup and no body

TRU
Go figure

JACK
Poor Carly Anders. She had a lot to live for. It’s funny how life works, huh? One day you’re here…next day you’re not

(Jack kneels down and strokes the place where Carly’s body lay on day one)

Well, wherever she is tonight…I’m sure it’s a better place

35. EXT. Elise Davies’ grave. DAY.
(Tru lays flowers beside it)

TRU
Hey, Mom. I know it’s been a while, but…I’ve been busy. I guess nobody would understand that better than you. But I’ll be back soon, Mom. I promise

(Tru turns and walks slowly out of the cemetery)
