--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. EXT. Street. DAY
(Tru waits outside, looking around. She’s holding dry cleaning in one hand and a plastic pot plant in the other. She checks her watch impatiently.)

2. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Tru walks into the office, with the dry cleaning and the plant)

TRU
Did Harrison call?

DAVIS
Oh, hi. No, was he supposed to?

TRU
He was supposed to give me a lift. But, never mind. I’m not gonna let anything ruin my mood today, because…look at me, Davis. This is a new woman

DAVIS
And she would be different from the old woman because…?

TRU
I’m not gonna put everything on hold anymore, just because a few corpses get conversational with me. From now on, I’m back in control of my own life. But, um…how are you doing? You look a little tired

DAVIS
I’ve got this thing tomorrow at my apartment, and I haven’t unpacked

TRU
When did you move in?

(Davis looks as through he counting back)

DAVIS
Three years ago

 (Tru looks at him incredulously)

DAVIS (cont’d)
Yeah, some people are coming over…because a guy I know from JPL is uh, feeding us images from the Mars Spirit rover and, uh…

TRU
Well why don’t I help you unpack?

DAVIS
Really? All right. Then it’ll be me, you and, uh…Jack

TRU
Jack? Why is he…?

DAVIS
Because he volunteered before you showed up

(Behind them, Jack walks past pushing a trolley)

JACK
Honey, I’m home

3. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Jack unzips the body bag, revealing a young woman – late teens)

JACK
Shot through the heart. Found in an alley downtown. Family’s on the way

TRU
Still got her ID and wallet. Not your average mugging

(She reads from the ID card)

“Melissa Sumner, 19, college student”

JACK
I like a girl who pays attention to the details

TRU
It’s my job

JACK
But not everyone does it so well, or so thoroughly

(Tru looks down at Melissa. Suddenly Melissa’s eyes open and her head turns towards Tru)

MELISSA
Help me!

(Tru waits for the day to start rewinding. Nothing happens. She looks around, confused)

JACK
Hey, you okay?

TRU
Yeah…I gotta go, just one sec

(She runs across the room into Davis’s office)

4. INT. Office. NIGHT.
(Davis looks up as Tru enters)

TRU
That body that just came in, she asked for help

DAVIS
Just now?

TRU
Just now

DAVIS
But you’re still here

TRU
That’s because nothing happened. No rewind, nothing

 [Fade to Black]
 [CREDITS]

5. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Tru and Davis stand over the body of Melissa)

DAVIS
Are you sure you didn’t imagine this?

TRU
Davis, please, I may be overworked but I’m not hallucinating. So is this it? Am I never gonna rewind again?

DAVIS
We may never know. I don’t…

TRU
Did I do something wrong?

DAVIS
No, don’t start that now. You put yourself on the line for these people. You’ve done nothing wrong. Maybe it didn’t happen for a reason. Something specific to this case, this girl

TRU
College student. You think there’s something special about her?

JACK (off-screen)
Hey

 (Camera pans over to him)

Melissa Sumner’s parents are here for an I.D.

DAVIS
I guess we’ll find out

6. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Melissa’s parents, Davis, Tru and Jack are beside Melissa’s body)

JACK
Mrs Sumner, I’m sure this is of little comfort to you now, but I am truly sorry for your loss

MR SUMNER
We always told her how dangerous the city is. How she should just hand over her wallet if someone wanted it

TRU
Actually Mr Sumner, her wallet was still with her

 (Jack looks up at her)

Twenty dollars inside. Can you think of anyone who might have had animosity towards your daughter?

MR SUMNER
No. Melissa was…she got along with everyone. She was…she was always a good girl. She was so bright…she had a brilliant future and… (he breaks down in tears)

(Melissa’s little sister edges into the room. Mr Sumner spots her)

Honey…oh honey…honey, you shouldn’t be here, okay?

(He embraces her, both of them in tears)

We’ll go outside

Camera shots of Tru, Davis and Mrs Sumner looking upset

7. INT. Morgue Office. NIGHT.

TRU
The worst part of not rewinding is watching that family. All that pain every day, how do you stand it?

DAVIS
You get used to it

(He notices Tru putting on her jacket)

Where are you going?

TRU
Well, I can’t just leave it like this. I can try and find out what happened to Melissa, and why she asked for my help

8. INT. Morgue Corridor. NIGHT.
(Tru walks down the corridor. Harrison comes out of the elevator at the end of the corridor and walks towards her)

HARRISON
I know, I know, and I’m sorry, okay? I forgot to pick you up, something unexpected came up

TRU
A girl, or a bet?

HARRISON
Well, that ain’t fair, it was an emergency! Of a kind

 (Tru looks at him)

Okay, so I boxed the trifecta at three, four, seven, and it was three, four, six. I was only off by one! But who would’ve thought that Vanilla Custard wouldn’t pass a urine test?

TRU
You know what? Forget it

HARRISON
Well what’s your hurry?

TRU
My hurry is that a body just asked for my help

(They both walk into the elevator)

HARRISON
Well this is a do-over day and you let me lose 200 bucks?!

TRU
It’s not a do-over. The body asked for help, and nothing happened

HARRISON
What, were you fired?

 (The elevator closes)

Cut to: Shot of Hudson University sign - night

9. EXT. Hudson University grounds. NIGHT.
(Tru walks along with Melissa’s roommate Dawn)

DAWN
Well I was Melissa’s roommate but we really didn’t talk much. She always had her head in a book. She was doing a math and engineering double major, and she was a teaching assistant, and had a 3.9 grade point average

TRU
Any arguments, disagreements? Was she upset about anything?

DAWN
She seemed fine. Everything was normal. I’m sorry I can’t be more help

TRU
No, I appreciate it

DAWN
You know, it’s not like Melissa and I were really friends, but I go back to the room now and all of her stuff is still there

TRU
Like she’ll walk in any second

DAWN
Yeah. But I guess this is just another day, to you

10. INT. Davis’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Tru knocks on his door, he opens it)

DAVIS
Oh, good. Thanks for coming

TRU
No problem

DAVIS
This is it. How’d it go?

TRU
Actually, it didn’t go very far. The roommate backs up the parents. Nobody has any clue why anyone would shoot Melissa

DAVIS
Well at least you’re starting to build a picture of who she was

 (Jack walks into the room)

JACK
Hey Tru

TRU
Hey Jack

JACK
Hey, I put all 13 episodes of I, Claudius on the same shelf as the X Files videos, is that wrong?

(Davis sighs, and goes over to it)

What, you serious about alphabetizing?

(He chuckles, and he and Tru move over to the bookcase)

JACK
Wow, Davis is a dedicated employee isn’t he?

Camera shot of the book shelf, holding titles such as “What Dying People Want”, “Return From Death”, “Death in Denial” and “No Time To Die”

TRU
He really takes his work home with him

JACK
I’m trying to imagine a First Date scenario…”Why don’t you come back to my apartment, I’ll show you all my books on death”

TRU
Kind of a mood killer

JACK
Unless you’re dating a serial killer

 (Davis rejoins them)

TRU
Oh hey Davis, we were just checking out some of your books

DAVIS
I thought you guys were here to help me unpack

(Tru and Jack look at each other, and move away from the bookcase. Jack notices a photograph on the side, of a woman on a boat)

JACK
Who’s this?

(Davis tries to take it, but Jack holds on)

Someone special I presume?

DAVIS
We were together, now we’re not

TRU
Ooh look, Harbor Marina

(Tru looks over Jack’s shoulder at the photograph, the lady is sitting on a boat called “The Comet”)

She’s pretty

JACK
Yeah

TRU
Huh. Do you still talk to her?

DAVIS
Look, I think I can take care of the rest of this…if you guys wanna take off

(He snatches the photograph out of Jack’s hands. Jack and Tru look at each other, confused)

11. EXT. Street. NIGHT.
(Jack and Tru are walking along together)

JACK
He’s a funny guy, isn’t he?

TRU
Funny?

JACK
Yeah. He lives alone, he makes death his career. And have you ever noticed how he always avoids talking about himself?

TRU
Oh come on, he’s just eccentric, that’s all

JACK
How much do you know about him?

TRU
Plenty

JACK
Really? Then tell me this: Is Davis his first name or his last name?

 (Tru doesn’t answer)

I’ll bet he knows a lot about you though, doesn’t he?

 (His pager bleeps)

I got a pickup. I’ll see you back at the Morgue

TRU
Yeah, see you there

12. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Tru stands over the body of Melissa Sumner)

TRU
Why? What do you want from me? How can I help you?

(Jack enters, switching the lights on. He’s pulling a trolley)

JACK
Talking to yourself?

TRU
Occupational hazard in a place like this

JACK
Well you know what I always say, when they start answering back then its time to worry. Look at this guy – swallowed a whole bottle of downers

(He unzips the bag to reveal a middle-aged man)

TRU
What do we got?

(She looks in his pocket and pulls out a wad of business cards)

Hmm. Hey, check this out. No I.D. but he picked up a lot of business cards. Maybe he was a salesman

JACK (reading a note from his other pocket)
And the piece de resistance: “Jean, I’m sorry. Please forgive me”. Signed, “Geoffrey”. Short. Concise. To the point. Gotta admire that

(Jack moves away, Tru looks down at Geoffrey. His head moves towards her)

GEOFFREY
Save me

[Flashes of the days images in sequence as the day rewinds]

13. INT. Tru’s bedroom. DAY.
(She sits up in bed and picks up the phone. She dials and lifts it to her ear)

TRU
Davis…two bodies, one day. We gotta talk

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the days images in sequence]

14. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Tru walks into the computer room)

TRU
Davis, where are you…

(She sits down at the computer and types in one of the company names from the business cards)

[Flashback: TRU: No I.D, but he’s picked up a bunch of business cards]

 (Jack enters the room)

JACK
You’re here early

TRU
I need to talk to Davis. A personal matter

JACK
You rely on him a lot….for someone you know nothing about. Or am I wrong about that?

(Tru turns back to the computer)

See you, Tru

 (He walks away)

[Flashback: Tru is Davis’s apartment looking at the photograph. “Huh. Harbor Marina”.]

(Tru finds the boat “The Comet” on the computer. It’s registered to H. Clarke)

TRU
H. Clarke

DAVIS (appearing at the doorway)
I got here as fast as I could. You wanna go talk in the office?

TRU
Mm-hmm

(She clicks off the boat page, leaving the page with the business card address up, then she follows Davis out)

DAVIS (off-screen, down the corridor)
Could these two people be connected in some way?

(Jack appears in view, sitting down at the computer. He clicks back open the boat’s page)

15. INT. Davis’s Office. DAY.

DAVIS
What does a murdered college student and a businessman’s suicide have in common?

TRU
We don’t even have a last name on the suicide. He signed the note “Geoffrey”

DAVIS
No I.D.? No address?

TRU
I didn’t find any. But I did find a bunch of different business cards in his pocket. I checked a few of the company names on the computer, and get this: they all had the same address

DAVIS
Well it sounds like a place to start

TRU
Two people to save, double workload

DAVIS
You gonna be okay?

TRU
I’ll be fine. I got a head start on Melissa yesterday

(She walks out of the office and away. Jack comes up to the office and stands in the doorway)

DAVIS
Can I help you?

JACK
Yeah. Does the name H. Clarke mean anything to you?

DAVIS (like it does mean something)
Why do you ask?

JACK
Well, Tru was looking it up on the computer, and I was just wondering whether I’d lost a body. I mean, H. Clarke wasn’t on the list, but maybe…

DAVIS (uncomfortably)
Probably doesn’t mean anything

JACK
Okay

Cut to: Shot of “The Track” and its red lit up sign outside

16. EXT. The Track. DAY.
(Harrison is looking at a newspaper, grinning. Tru walks up behind him)

TRU
I need to borrow your car

HARRISON
That is so weird. I was just coming to…

TRU
No, you weren’t gonna come and get me. And if I were you, I’d stay away from the trifecta too

HARRISON
That is so not fair! You know what I did and I don’t

TRU
Look, you let me down, Harrison. Again. Nothing you haven’t done 1000 times before. And you know what? Lindsay says the same exact thing about you too

HARRISON
Well excuse me, I made a mistake. I’m not lucky like you: you screw up, and it’s “Oh what am I gonna do? You know what, I’ll just redo it!”

TRU
Oh that’s right, I’m lucky, right? Because I have two lives to save today, and I have no idea how I’m gonna do it

HARRISON
You know what; let me help you on this

TRU
Help me? You forgot to even come pick me up!

HARRISON
I know about that, but look. I’m good with people, you know that, and I’ve helped you before. Look, we don’t have a lot of options here. You got two lives, right? You gotta trust somebody here, why not me?

 (Tru looks unsure)

I swear, Tru. I will not let you down

TRU
Okay. I’m gonna tell you everything I know about Melissa Sumner. Right, I need you to pay attention, okay? Because you never know what’s gonna be important. Okay, drive to Hudson, its uptown campus, Waverly Hall, she’s gonna T.A. a math class at noon…

(Scene fades into the next one)

17. INT. Hudson University. DAY.
(Melissa finishing writing on the blackboard with chalk, and sets it down)

MELISSA
All right. That’s it for today, class. Just remember: when you think something is random, it isn’t. It’s all about patterns

(Harrison gets up from his seat at the back of the class and walks towards her)

MELISSA (cont’d)
As Einstein once said, “God doesn’t play dice with the universe”

HARRISON
I liked that little lecture thing there…especially the end part. Not sure I agree with it though, about God not playing dice?

MELISSA
Oh, you feel up to arguing with Einstein?

HARRISON
Well, gambling’s fun, right? Just stands to reason that God…would wanna have a good time with his creation

MELISSA
Probabilities are fun for you and me because we can’t see the future. Since God already knows all the cards, He probably doesn’t get the same kick out of it

HARRISON
No, no…that’s where you’re wrong. I actually know a little bit about the future myself

MELISSA
You do?

HARRISON
Yeah. I see you, I see me…we’re having lunch together

MELISSA
Nice try, but I see separate tables

HARRISON
Right…

18. EXT. Street. DAY.

TRU
“368 West First Street”…

 (Her cellphone rings)

Hello, Harry

Cut to: HARRISON on the Campus grounds

HARRISON
Yeah, it’s a little harder than I thought…Í know bail bondsmen who are friendlier than this chick

(Camera shot to show he’s following Melissa)

Cut to: TRU
Right, right. So listen, you have to get into this girl’s life, Harrison. Whatever her plans are for today, you’ve gotta change them. You can do it. Just be yourself

Cut to: HARRISON
I WAS myself!

Cut to: TRU
You hit on her?

Cut to: HARRISON
No!... well, not in so many … Yeah

Cut to: TRU
Well then be your other self

Cut to: HARRISON
Lie?

Cut to: TRU
Bingo

Cut to: HARRISON
Got it

(He snaps the phone shut, straightens his collar, flicks his hair back and strolls forward)

19. EXT/INT. Keel Export. DAY.
(Tru snaps her phone shut. She has found one of the companies. She walks inside)

GEOFFREY (off-screen)
You committed to 6000 pounds of bison meat. This place isn’t even refrigerated. Okay, damn it, you can’t get Mad Cow from freaking buffalo, that’s why they call it “Cow”!

 (A cell phone rings)

All right, hold on a second. Just hold on

 (He answers the cellphone)

Hello? Jean, hi. It’s so good to hear your voice. No, its great timing. Yeah, its not even midnight here. No, that’s right, Hong Kong doesn’t sleep. Listen honey, I’m right in the middle of finishing dinner with some clients…

(Tru is closer now, and can see half a dozen telephones lined up at the side, each with a different business card attached)

So, I…no, it’s going really well. It’s going great. I miss you too

(Tru looks at the desk. There is a form headed “Haverford Savings and Loan”)

Yeah, I’ll be home in a few days. Okay, I love you sweetheart

(He hangs up the cellphone and picks up the original call)

Hello? Hello? Damn it

TRU
Man of many names, huh?

GEOFFREY
Can I help you?

TRU
Yeah, I’m here to see Geoffrey. I’m from the bank

GEOFFREY
I just…I just talked to your manager. I told him I’d get the money today and I will. I’m working on something right now

TRU
Always a scheme, huh? I have a brother like you

GEOFFREY
Okay, look, the bank’s gonna get their money. I’ve got everything under control, so thank you for stopping by

TRU
No problem

(She leaves; he closes the door after her)

20. EXT. Rooftop. DAY.
(Harrison opens the door onto the roof and walks out. Melissa is sitting to a table, with her lunch and some books. She looks up and sees Harrison)

MELISSA
You know, I come up here to be alone

HARRISON
I can see why. It’s a great spot for it

MELISSA
If you’re looking for a girl, this campus is full of them

HARRISON
Look, no offence, and…God this is so embarrassing…I….I need some help with some math tutoring

MELISSA
Really. What do you need help with, advanced calculus? Beginner? (she winks at him)

HARRISON
Uh, like…fractions

 (Melissa laughs)

I need some help with some fractions

 (Melissa laughs again)

Oh, come on…you multiply, divide, and one goes over the other…and those little slashes, what is that about? Its confusing…no, the thing is…you look like you need a break. You’re all about patterns, right? Why don’t you break out of yours?

MELISSA
Look, um, I’m sorry, you seem like a really nice guy, but I’ve got a lot to do

HARRISON
Right

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue building

21. INT. Morgue. DAY.
 (Jack is on the telephone)

JACK
Harbor Marina? Yeah, I’m looking for H. Clarke. The owner of a boat called “The Comet”. Yeah, I’ll hold

 (Davis walks into the room)

JACK (cont’d – to Davis)
Doctor’s office, trying to get a human being on the phone

(Davis says nothing, and walks out again)

JACK (cont’d – to the phone)
Yeah, I’m still here

22. EXT. Keel Import. DAY.
(Geoffrey comes out of the building and walks down the street. Tru watches him go, then follows)

23. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Tru follows Geoffrey. He turns around once, and Tru veers right to pretend to look in a window. She resumes following; eventually Geoffrey turns off into a club)

24. INT. Countdown Club. DAY.
(Tru enters and looks around. There is a table set up with eight places. A man enters from behind Tru)

MAN
You here for the poker game? Its high stakes players only

TRU
I’ll be right back

25. EXT. Countdown Club. DAY.

TRU (on cellphone)
Harrison, what do you know about a poker game at a place called The Countdown Club?

Cut to: HARRISON by his car in the car park of the university

HARRISON
That place. Once a month they have a high stakes game, when they throw out all the small fries. I don’t know, I’ve only heard rumours about it

Cut to: TRU
Well it’s starting to look like Geoffrey’s gonna lose and kill himself sometime tonight. He’s desperate for the money. Do you think you could get into the game?

Cut to: HARRISON
Into the game? What about Melissa? And besides, you need, like, five grand to have a stake

Cut to: TRU
Right. Just stay where you are, I’m gonna get the money and bring it to you. We’re gonna switch. Poker’s your world, you’re gonna take Geoffrey and I’ll take care of Melissa

Cut to: HARRISON
And where are you gonna get that kind of cash? Huh? Tru?

Cut to: Tru has already hung up, and is walking into “The Track”

26. EXT. Harrison’s Car. DAY.
(Harrison is almost falling asleep. Tru’s hand reaches through the window towards him, holding an envelope full of money)

TRU
Vanilla Custard flunked the urine test, or so you told me yesterday

HARRISON
So you pick winners for total strangers but not even your own bro?

TRU
Where is Melissa?

HARRISON
She’s in her dorm. That’s the only entrance, right over there. And hey, good luck

(Harrison drives away. Tru’s cell phone rings)

TRU
Hello?

Cut to: DAVIS at the morgue
I ran one of those aliases you gave me through a credit bureau. Harold Smith co-signed a loan for, get this: Geoffrey Pine

Cut to: TRU
Pine. We finally got a last name

Cut to: DAVIS
I think Geoffrey Pine creates new identities to open new lines of credit. And probably get away from those people he owed money to when things got bad

Cut to: TRU
He must be deeper in the hole than he’s ever been if he’s committing suicide over this. His wife has no idea. She thinks he’s in Hong Kong. He’s been living a lie. And you know what the crazy thing is? He’s not a bad guy. With all the schemes and everything, he reminds me so much of Harrison

Cut to: DAVIS
Well, mirror images, duality, life and death…that’s the way a lot of religions see the universe, Tru

Cut to: TRU, she notices Melissa getting into a cab

TRU
Hey Davis, I gotta go

Cut to: Davis, he hangs up his phone, worried

Cut to: Melissa gets out of the cab and walks down the street. Another cab pulls up, and Tru gets out. She follows Melissa. Melissa turns off into a doorway, Tru’s cellphone rings

TRU
Hello?

HARRISON (voice-over)
Hey, hey. I’m at the game

Cut to HARRISON
And I’m just checking in

Cut to: TRU
Great. Now don’t lose track of Geoffrey while you’re staring at your cards

HARRISON (voice-over)
Oh, come on, Tru

(Tru pulls open the door Melissa went in)

I will not let you down, I swear

 (Harrison’s voice is getting louder)

HARRISON (Cont’d)
Everything is under control…Tru?

(Tru looks up the balcony. Harrison is standing up there, looking down at Tru)

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the days images in sequence]

27. INT. Club. DAY.
 (Melissa walks over to Harrison)

MELISSA
Did you follow me here?

HARRISON
Um, how could I follow you if I was here first? You know, now that you mention it, I think you should leave. Like, now

Cut to: Geoffrey and Tru at the bar

GEOFFREY
Who the hell are you?

TRU
Maybe I’m a friend of your wife’s

GEOFFREY
Not with that tell

TRU
Tell?

GEOFFREY
It’s a giveaway. You looked away when you lied, and you pushed your hair back

Cut to: Harrison and Melissa

HARRISON
No, seriously, I think you should get out of here

MELISSA
What is it with you? Why are you obsessed with me leaving?

HARRISON
I just have a feeling that you might have some bad luck here tonight, I don’t know

MELISSA
Oh yeah, well nice try at psyching out your competition, but I need this money and I’m not moving

HARRISON
Come on. What does a young, pretty, smart girl like yourself need with that kind of money, huh?

Cut to: Tru and Geoffrey

TRU
Your wife doesn’t know about your secret life, does she? Well guess what, when they come to take your house away, I’m pretty sure she’s gonna figure it out

GEOFFREY
You don’t understand. My wife told me to straighten up my act a long time ago. She thinks I did

Cut to: Harrison and Melissa

MELISSA
I’ve been putting my theories of probability to practical use

HARRISON
Huh?

MELISSA
I’ve been gambling, okay? A lot. Over the long run I tend to win…but over the short run, I…

HARRISON
Huh?

MELISSA
I lost my tuition money

HARRISON
You mean, all of it?

Cut to: Geoffrey and Tru

GEOFFREY
Look, I can fix this. Okay? I can win. I just need one good streak

TRU
That’s why I’m here. Consider me your good-luck charm

Cut to: Harrison and Melissa

MELISSA
In a few days, the school is gonna write a letter to my parents, unless I head it off by getting this money tonight. Look, this is my last chance Harrison. I like you, but I’m gonna have to beat you

 (Harrison smiles sceptically)

28. INT. Club. NIGHT.
(All the poker players are sitting at the table playing the game. Tru sits somewhere behind them, watching)

Shots of various players putting down their cards

 Shot of Geoffrey looking nervous

 Shot of Harrison, looking pleased

Shots of poker chips being thrown into the centre

Shot of a hand of cards

Camera moves to show they are Melissa’s. She looks at Harrison, he pulls his shirt collar and she nods, and smiles

More chips are thrown into the centre

 Harrison winks at Tru

Shot of Harrison’s cards, a pair – he pulls his collar again, Melissa smiles. Harrison puts his cards down; Melissa puts hers down, she has a flush

WOMAN
Flush beats the pair

MAN
How about a break?

MAN 2
Yeah

(Melissa collects her chips, everyone moves from the table. Geoffrey walks over to Tru)

GEOFFREY
No offence, but as a good luck charm, you’re not working hard enough

 (Tru beckons Harrison over)

29. INT. Club. NIGHT.
(Harrison and Tru talk, away from everybody else)

HARRISON
Damn, she’s a hell of a player

TRU
She probably won last night too, it makes sense. That’s why she was killed, for the money

HARRISON
So, Geoffrey lost, offed himself, and Melissa won, and…

TRU
And was robbed and shot in the alleyway outside. If she leaves broke, it’ll keep her alive

HARRISON
But if she leaves broke, she gets kicked out of school

TRU
We have to think of this as an ER. First we have to save their lives. You have to beat her, Harrison

HARRISON
Oh well not to shock you or anything, but I am trying

TRU
Well, you have a tell

HARRISON
I do not

TRU
You pull on your collar whenever you’re bluffing

Cut to: MAN by the table
You playing?

HARRISON
Oh, yeah

(to Tru) Just remember who the experienced poker player is, okay?

30. INT. Club. NIGHT.
(The second game is underway. Cards are thrown onto the table. Harrison throws some chips into the centre.)

Shot of Melissa’s cards – she has two pair

Harrison pulls on his collar, Melissa notices

 Geoffrey throws his cards down

Melissa, confident Harrison is bluffing, puts down her two pair

Harrison puts down his cards – straight

WOMAN
Straight beats two pair

MAN
The ace

 (Harrison smiles at Tru)

HARRISON
Yeah! Woo!

 (He collects his chips)

31. INT. Club. NIGHT.
(Everyone has left the table. Melissa comes up to Harrison)

MELISSA
Congratulations, you…you were faking the tell

HARRISON
Well, you know…it was only the last one, so…

MELISSA
Uh, this is, uh…this is really awkward for me…

HARRISON
I gotta warn you, I’m in a serious relationship, and, uh…

MELISSA (near tears)
Look, Harrison, the truth is, I really need this money. Do you think that you would, um, that you would consider loaning it to me? I mean, I would pay you back, with interest and everything…I, if you just give me a little bit of time…

HARRISON
I’m sorry. I can’t do it

MELISSA
Yeah…thanks

(Melissa walks away. Harrison has tears in his eyes, as Tru walks over to him)

HARRISON
This whole knowing the future thing? It can really suck

TRU
Yeah, sometimes. Well, that was just step one. Because step two is, now you lose all that money to Geoffrey

 (Harrison chuckles)

HARRISON
You know, why don’t you just take a bullet right through my heart?

TRU
Start losing, Harry

32. EXT. Clarke House. NIGHT.
(Jack rings the doorbell. An old lady comes to the door)

JACK
Hi. I’m looking for H. Clarke

HOPE
I’m Hope Clarke

JACK
Are you the owner of the boat registered out at the Harbor Marina?

HOPE
Well, I’m not the sailor in the family. My daughter Haley bought it

JACK
Oh. Then, can I talk to Haley?

HOPE
May I ask you what this is about?

33. INT. Club. NIGHT.
(The third poker game is underway. Harrison glances at Tru, she smiles at him. Geoffrey puts down his cards. Harrison looks at his cards – it’s a straight flush – and he knows it will beat him. He falters for a moment, wanting badly to put the cards down. Then he throws the cards down face down)

HARRISON
Two lousy pairs. I’m out

(Geoffrey chuckles happily, and collects his chips)

TRU
Good luck charm says, cash out (she pats Geoffrey’s arm)

GEOFFREY
Are you crazy?

HARRISON
Yeah, a little friendly advice, pal. Leave, while you’re ahead

GEOFFREY
You gotta be kidding me, man. I’m on a streak, and there’s still money on the table

HARRISON
There’s always money on the table somewhere

34. EXT. Alley. NIGHT.
(Tru and Harrison walk with Geoffrey to the taxi)

GEOFFREY
So, er, I guess I’m never gonna know who the hell you are

TRU
Guess not

GEOFFREY
Well, I think I’m gonna go surprise my wife with an early return from Hong Kong. Thank you

(He gets into the cab and it drives away)

HARRISON
I can’t believe I voluntarily lost all that money

TRU
Welcome to my world. And now, I gotta go to work. What about you?

HARRISON
Ah well, Melissa left here thinking I’m some kind of jerk, so might as well try to find her, and make sure she knows it wasn’t personal, so…

(He turns and walks away. Tru calls after him)

TRU
Hey…You did good
HARRISON
You ain’t so bad yourself

35. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
 (Tru and Davis are talking)

TRU
He was great, Davis! I mean, two people saved, and he didn’t just leave it at that. He’s gone to see Melissa and try to make things right with her

(She sits down at the computer and brings up “Metropolitan People Search”)

DAVIS
What’s with Geoffrey Pine?

(Tru picks up the telephone and dials the number on the screen)

TRU
Just this feeling I have, like there’s unfinished business. I mean the truth is, I may have saved his life this time, but if he doesn’t make some changes…The man reminds me so much of Harrison, I mean I can’t just…

WOMAN (on telephone)
Hello?

TRU
Hello, can I speak to Geoffrey?

WOMAN (voice-over)
He’s still in Hong Kong, can I take a message?

TRU
Oh, no, no message. Thanks. Bye

WOMAN (voice-over)
Bye

(she hangs up and looks at Davis)

TRU
His wife says he’s still in Hong Kong. He left to go see her, he should be home by now. I’d better go make sure Geoffrey’s okay

DAVIS
Tru, it may be nothing…we talked about duality, mirror images

TRU
Yeah

DAVIS
Murder and suicide on day one. If that were a complete mirror image, you know what would happen

(Tru runs out of the room)

Cut to: Shot of Hudson University

36. INT. Hudson dorm corridor. NIGHT.
(Harrison walks down the corridor. He knocks on the door of Melissa’s room. Nobody answers, he opens it)

HARRISON
Yo…Melissa? Mel?

(He walks through the living area into the bedroom)

Hey, you in here?

(His eyes fall on the desk by the computer, there is a note, held in place by a Rubik’s cube. It reads: “Mom and Dad, I’m sorry. Forgive me. Love you forever”.)

(Harrison runs out of the room)

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the days images in sequence]

37. EXT. Street. NIGHT.
(Tru is walking alone, her cellphone rings)

TRU
Hey, Harrison

Cut to: HARRISON
I’m at the campus, Melissa left a suicide note

TRU (voice-over)
Oh my God

HARRISON
Look you need to get down here

Cut to: TRU
I can’t, I’d never make it there in time. And Geoff’s still in danger, he never went home

Cut to: HARRISON
Look you know where he is! Where does any gambler go?

Cut to: TRU
He went back to the game

Cut to: HARRISON
Just forget him, okay? Look, I know where she’s gonna be

Cut to: TRU
Harrison, I have to reach Geoffrey. He has no idea what he’s walking into

Cut to: HARRISON
Look, she’s going to kill herself, Tru!

Cut to: TRU
You’re there. You can do this, Harr

Cut to: Harrison looking unsure and nervous

Cut to: TRU
You can do this!

Cut to: Harrison, hanging up the phone

38. EXT. Rooftop. NIGHT.
(Melissa is standing on the edge of the roof, crying. Harrison bursts out onto the roof. She turns around, then turns back to staring at the ground)

HARRISON
Melissa…

 (he starts edging closer)

Look, I know why you’re here, and…um, Melissa….uh, I can help you

MELISSA (crying)
Are you giving me the money after all?

HARRISON
Look, I would. I would, but, um, I don’t have it anymore

MELISSA
You lost it

(she turns back to the edge)

HARRISON
Hey, no, no, no, don’t

 (she turns around)

Look, losing money ain’t the end of the world, right? I mean, take it from me. I can help you. You could…you could tell your parents

MELISSA (crying harder)
No. No, I can’t. I can’t face them. They work sixteen hours a day so that I can have a better life, they gave up everything for me and my sister! How could I possibly tell them that I gambled away all my college money? They would never understand!

HARRISON
Look, there has to be another way out, okay?

MELISSA
No, its hopeless…I would have to get the money to school by tomorrow, before they write a letter to my parents

(she steps closer to the edge)

HARRISON
Whoa, hold on…hey, look…my car! Huh? My car. I mean, it ain’t worth but five grand, but, uh…it’s yours. It’s yours! Huh? Will that give you time? Huh?

MELISSA
You would…you would do that for me?

HARRISON
Of course…come here, come on

(Melissa starts to walk towards him, still crying)

Yeah…come on, come on…

 (he walks her away, gently)

39. INT. Club. NIGHT.
(The dealer hands Geoffrey a wad of notes. He puts it into his bag, and turns to the man standing next to him)

GEOFFREY
What a night. Look like I don’t need my good luck charm after all. I’m still on that hot streak

40. EXT. Alley. NIGHT.
(Geoffrey and the man walk outside)

GEOFFREY
That’s tough luck, man, maybe next time

MAN
Hey…

(Geoffrey turns towards him. The man pulls out a gun)

Just stay calm and hand me the money

TRU (running into the alley)
No!

(Geoffrey takes advantage of Tru’s distraction, and jumps at the man. The gun fires into the air. The gunman and Geoffrey begin to fight – the gun gets knocked to the ground. Tru retrieves it. The man punches Geoffrey away and goes for Tru, throwing her against a car. Geoffrey recovers himself and seizes the gunman off Tru. He throws him against the wall and Tru points the gun at him. He puts his hands up)

41. EXT. Alley. NIGHT.
(A police car’s flashing lights begin the scene, then the gunman is pushed into the police car by an officer)

GEOFFREY
You know, I don’t know why you keep looking out for me. And I’m not…I’m not sure I know how to thank you

TRU
Well, if I was really looking out for you, what do you think I’d say?

GEOFFREY
Tell my wife

TRU
Harder than a high stakes game. Think you can handle it?

GEOFFREY
No. But it’s time

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue

42. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Tru steps out of the elevator. She meets Jack on her way into the morgue)

JACK
Hey. I got a pickup down in the van. How do you get so banged up on this job? It’s not like the dead fight back

TRU
Yeah…you’d be surprised

JACK
Hey, did you know that Davis was married?

(Tru and Jack look over to Davis’s office, he is inside, talking to Harrison)

His wife’s dead, but…

TRU
Dead? He tell you this?

JACK
Davis? Volunteer personal information? Are you kidding me? I got an ear for gossip

(Tru looks towards the office again, she can hear Harrison chuckling. She looks back at Jack: he gets into the elevator. Tru walks over towards the office)

43. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.

HARRISON (off-screen)
So you gotta come out with me, man. Get out of this morgue

DAVIS (off-screen)
I don’t know…no

HARRISON (off-screen)
Dude, live it up a little

 (Tru enters the room)

Hey!

TRU
Hey

DAVIS
Hi

HARRISON
I rescued a pizza on the way back

DAVIS
After saving a damsel

HARRISON
Yes, sir!

DAVIS
Something wrong?

TRU
It’s…well, yesterday…at your apartment, there was a picture of a woman

DAVIS
Well maybe we should discuss that

TRU
You know what, no, it’s really…it’s none of my business actually

DAVIS
It is

HARRISON
You know, should I just go, and…

DAVIS
No, stay, Harrison. You deserve to hear this too

HARRISON
Well, okay

DAVIS
We were married. For a year

HARRISON
You’re married?

DAVIS
And, er…I was supposed to meet Haley at her mother’s. We were going to a restaurant for our anniversary dinner. And I’d been working late here, and I was going out to my car and the gas had all been drained from the tank, and the tyres were flat. There was this crazy woman there, telling me that I had to call my wife, and prevent her from getting in her car, and getting on the freeway

HARRISON
Crazy woman? What?

TRU
Our mother

DAVIS
But I knew the evening could be salvaged. Haley knew that if I was running late, that I could meet her at the restaurant

TRU
Our mother didn’t know where she was. And you didn’t call Haley

DAVIS
Tell her that there was a lunatic that claimed she was gonna die that night? I thought, “Yeah, that’d be a great way to say Happy Anniversary”

TRU
What happened?

DAVIS
The autopsy said that she had a seizure at the wheel, and her car drifted over three lanes before she was hit by a semi

TRU
So on day one?

DAVIS
I died with her

TRU
That’s why you know so much. That’s why you understand. Our mother saved you. Davis, I’m so sorry

DAVIS
It happened a long time ago. And you know, today’s a celebration day

HARRISON
Yeah

DAVIS
Two lives saved

HARRISON (raising his beer bottle)
Cheers

TRU
So that’s it? No more shocking revelations? No more secrets?

DAVIS
You officially know what I know

TRU
Well, not everything. Davis. First name or last?

HARRISON
Yes

DAVIS
Oh, it’s my middle. Actually, it’s a funny story…I was…

(Jack moves into the next room, pushing a trolley)

HARRISON
Hey, hey, Jack! There you are, my man. Come in here. Join the party, my man. You work too hard. Come on

JACK
Actually, it’s a slow night. I only had this pickup on campus

 (Tru looks at Harrison)

HARRISON
Huh? What?

44. INT. Morgue sign in room. NIGHT.
(Harrison unzips the bag. It’s Melissa’s body)

HARRISON (distressed)
Yeah, but I…

TRU
Harrison, let’s just go sit down. We’ll figure out what happened

HARRISON
No…

TRU
Harry

HARRISON
She was all right when I left!

JACK (whispering, to Davis)
Suicide was a friend of his?

HARRISON
She was all right, Tru, when I…when I left, everything was fine

JACK
Hey man, it’s easy to misjudge when someone’s depressed. Who knows what’s going through their head?

(Harrison backs away, near tears, and exits through the double doors. Tru runs after him)

45. INT. Morgue corridor. NIGHT.

TRU
Where are you going?

HARRISON
What difference does it make, huh? Lindsay was right about me, you were right. I’m not like you. I can’t save anybody. Not even myself!

TRU
Look, don’t go. Just stay with me. We can talk

(The elevator dings. Melissa’s mom, dad and little sister step out)

HARRISON
God, I gotta get out of here

TRU
Just…

(Harrison pushes past her and runs the other way)

46. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
 (Everyone stands beside Melissa’s body)

JACK
I know this is of little comfort to you now, but I am very sorry for your loss

MRS. SUMNER
Why? Why did she think she had to lie? It was only money. We put too much pressure on her

(Melissa’s sister walks slowly into the room)

MR. SUMNER
Honey, you shouldn’t be here okay? We’ll go outside…

TRU
Um, could you be any more specific?

MRS. SUMNER
We got a phone call. A man said that Melissa had lost all of her tuition money playing cards

 (Tru looks across at Davis)

47. INT. Davis’s office. NIGHT.

TRU
Somebody told them. Somebody told Melissa’s parents. They must have called her after Harrison left. They wanted an explanation. That’s why she killed herself

DAVIS
But that doesn’t make any sense. On day one, they didn’t know. What changed? Who could’ve done such a thing?

48. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Jack is getting ready to close Melissa’s body into a drawer. He strokes her forehead, gently. Then he closes the drawer.)
