1. INT. Tru’s bedroom. DAY.
(The telephone is ringing. Tru stirs, then answers it)

TRU
Hello?

DAVIS (voice-over)
Tru, its one o clock, are you up?

TRU
I am now. You know I work the graveyard shift, right?

Cut to: DAVIS at the Morgue
But it’s Jack’s orientation, you’re supposed to show him around. Did you…don’t tell me you forgot

Cut to: TRU
No, Davis, I didn’t forget, I’m just running a little bit late

Cut to: DAVIS
Okay

 (He hangs up)

She’s running late…

2. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Tru and Jack are in the sign-in room, both in white lab coats. There is a body lying on a trolley, a camera pointed at his head)

TRU
Okay, um, we can start over here. This is the digital autopsy capture, first we…

JACK
…scan the body with the camera for any visible signs of trauma, then enter the name and the case number into the database

TRU
Right. Exactly. Um, okay, over here. This is the live scan machine

JACK
Used to log fingerprints. Flat panel, to take hand impressions

 (Tru looks at him)

I read the manuals

TRU
Right. Wish someone had said something, I wouldn’t have gotten up so early

JACK
But then we couldn’t have spent this quality time together. And the truth is, there are a couple of things I don’t know

TRU
Such as?

JACK
Such as, do you like working here? The reason I ask is, you don’t look like your average Morgue attendant

TRU
Oh yeah? And what do I look like?

JACK
You look like a girl who takes things way too seriously. Someone who should be enjoying life but probably spends Friday nights home alone, watching TV, eating a microwave dinner. Should I bag the personals?

TRU
I don’t spend every Friday night at home! I mean, well anyways what do you do on Friday nights?

JACK
Why don’t you tell me?

TRU
Well, you don’t stay in, that’s for sure. Because that’d mean you’d be alone and you’re not a guy who’s all that keen on being alone. So you go out, to a bar, or a club. And after a few hours, you return home, sometimes solo, but usually with some nameless, faceless, shameless girl who just doesn’t understand you. But either way, at the end of the night, you’re alone, in front of the TV, eating a microwave dinner

JACK
I don’t own a microwave

 (They both smile)

But you still haven’t answered my question. Do you like it here?

TRU
Actually, I do

JACK
I understand

TRU
You do? Because, well not everyone does

JACK
Well that’s because most people believe only the living need help

3. INT. Arcade. DAY.
(A boy is playing a shooting game. A dark haired young man – Charlie - enters. The arcade attendant looks up from his handheld game, then goes back to it)

TEENAGER in CAP
Hand ‘em over! Right now

(He looks up again. Two teenagers are talking loudly in one corner. He goes back to his game. Charlie approaches him)

ARCADE ATTENDENT
Can I help you?

CHARLIE
Sure can

(He cocks a gun and aims it at the assistant)

Open the safe under the counter and fill it up

ARCADE ATTENDENT
We don’t have a safe

(Charlie turns around and grabs a young woman with bright red hair and sunglasses, she screams)

CHARLIE
Open it, or she dies!

WOMAN
Please, do what he says!

CHARLIE (pointing the gun at the attendant)
Now!

(The attendant ducks down under the counter, and opens the safe. He looks up at Charlie: he’s still pointing the gun at him)

4. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Harrison walks along the street alone, Michelle Carey comes running up behind him)

MICHELLE
Harrison Davies?

HARRISON
Yeah

MICHELLE
Are you Tru Davies’ brother?

HARRISON
Who wants to know?

MICHELLE
Michelle Carey, Post-Dispatch

HARRISON
Oh, right, right, yeah, Tru told me all about you

 (He stops by his car)

MICHELLE
Yeah, I just had a couple of questions about your sister. There’s been a series of crime scenes she’s been spotted at. I just wondered if you had anything to say about that

HARRISON
Sorry Michelle, I don’t talk to the media. They tend to make me a little nervous, you know?

MICHELLE
Yeah

HARRISON (getting into his car)
Yeah, but I’ll tell Tru you were asking about her

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue

5. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Harrison walks in to where Tru and Jack are standing)

TRU
Harry. What a surprise

HARRISON
Oh you know me, I am full of them

TRU
(to Jack) This is my brother Harrison
(to Harrison) This is Jack

JACK
Hey. Jack Harper

HARRISON
Nice to meet you, man

JACK
You too

HARRISON
(to Tru) Uh, you got a sec?

TRU
Yeah

HARRISON
Check

(They walk away. Jack stares after them)

HARRISON (off-screen)
So I ran into that reporter, Michelle

TRU (off-screen)
And?

HARRISON (off-screen)
Didn’t say a word

6. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Tru and Harrison walk into the office area, where the TV is on above them)

TV COMMENTRY
The man left the Lion Lair Arcade at approximately 2pm, and released a hostage shortly after. We’ll have more…

(Tru switches it off and turns to Harrison)

TRU
So what’s up?

HARRISON
I just wanted to…to check in, make sure you’re doing okay

TRU
Yeah I’m fine, why?

HARRISON
Well, the whole thing with Dad, shooting the guy who killed Mom?

TRU
Yeah, I’m dealing with it the best I can

HARRISON
Yeah

TRU
You know they haven’t found the body

HARRISON
You gotta hand it to the old man. He really took care of things

TRU
So, is that the only reason you stopped by?

HARRISON
Well now that you mention it, it’s me and Lindsay’s three month anniversary

TRU
I’m shocked, you remembered!

HARRISON
Yeah. Personally, I don’t think it’s a big deal. But it means a lot to her. So I booked reservations at La Petite Fleur uh…whatever it is she’s talking about

TRU
That’s really good. She’ll love that

HARRISON
Yeah. Problem is, I’m a little tapped out. Yeah, but if you could float some cash my way, I can make sure that your best friend Lindsay has a night that she’ll never forget

TRU (reaching into her pocket)
You’re lucky its payday. Here

HARRISON (looking at the dollar bills)
Pretty expensive restaurant

(Tru hands over another 20 dollars)

HARRISON (cont’d)
Of course, I should valet the car

(Tru folds her arms and clears her throat)

HARRISON (cont’d)
Yeah. Street parking. Not a problem

TRU
Get out

HARRISON
Yeah, I’m going. Oh, hey (he kisses her forehead) You are the best!

7. INT. Bookies. DAY.
(Harrison sits in front of the TV which is showing the horse racing)

HARRISON
That’s it! That’s it, baby! Go, go, go! Come on, Eight Ball!

Shot of the TV – Eight Ball is in First Place

Hold on, hold on, come on Eight Ball! Come on, go!

TV COMMENTRY
And Aidan’s Luck comes up on the outside

HARRISON
Do it for daddy, baby! Come on!

TV COMMENTARY
It’s Eight Ball, clinging to a narrow lead

HARRISON
Woo! Haha!

TV COMMENTARY
And here comes Aidan’s Luck

HARRISON (to the guy next to him)
Just trying to parlay some cash to bring the old lady out to a nice dinner, you know what I’m saying?

MAN (eyes on the TV)
Yes!

 (Harrison looks back to it)

TV COMMENTARY
Eight Ball and Aidan’s Luck are neck and neck

HARRISON
Oh no! No, no, no, no!

TV COMMENTARY
Aidan’s Luck by a nose

MAN
Looks like you guys are eating in

HARRISON
God. No, that’s cool. That’s cool. Still got one more race. Win it all back. So, uh, what do you think of Hodgepodge in the nightcap?

MAN
Not much. Look, I’m going with Deep Shaker

HARRISON
Deep Shaker? He’s 20-1

 (The man nods. Harrison laughs)

Yeah, lots of luck with that, pal

 (He walks away, laughing)

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue

8. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Tru walks down the corridor, Jack calls out to her)

JACK
Hey, Tru

TRU
What’s up?

JACK
Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for giving up your afternoon to come in here and help me

TRU
Oh, it’s no problem

JACK
So we’re okay, you and me?

TRU
Yeah, why wouldn’t we be?

JACK
Well, I just wanna make sure. I didn’t wanna come off like a know-it-all back there

TRU
No, no, you didn’t. Perfectly, well…

LUC (coming out of the elevator)
Hey Tru

TRU
Oh, Luc, hi

 (Luc looks pointedly at Jack)

Uh, Luc, this is Jack, the new forensics assistant. Luc’s a crime scene photographer

 (They shake hands)

JACK
Nice to meet you

LUC
Same here

(There is an awkward silence. Luc and Tru smile nervously at each other)

LUC
So…

 (Jack looks between them, intrigued)

TRU
So, how have you been?

LUC
Fine, fine. Busy

TRU
Oh, me too

LUC
You always are

 (Silence descends again)

LUC (cont’d)
Well, speaking of busy, I ought to, you know, head back

TRU
Yeah, well I’ll see you around

LUC
See you Jack

JACK
Nice to meet you

LUC
You too

(He walks away. Jack turns to Tru)

JACK
So, how long did you too date for?

TRU
What?

JACK
Oh come on, I saw it. The long, lingering looks. The unfinished sentences

TRU
What are you talking about?

JACK
I think it was about two months. And then things got complicated, and you broke up. Only now you’re wondering if you did the right thing, or just the easy thing

TRU
Okay yeah, something like that. So now’s the part where you’re gonna lay into me for being that girl who’s way too serious, right?

JACK
No. I was gonna tell you I’m sorry things didn’t work out the way you wanted

(He walks out of the room. Tru watches him, curiously. Then she sighs and turns back into the room. Davis enters)

DAVIS
Hey. How’d it go with Jack?

TRU
Good, I think

DAVIS
What, did he mishandle equipment? What’d he do? Did he…?

TRU
No, no, nothing like that. He’s a smart guy, he knows his stuff. I just can’t get a read on him for some reason. It’s like one minute he’s in your face and almost obnoxious, and the next he’s charming and trying to be your best friend

DAVIS
Well, he’s just trying to get acclimated, you know. I remember your first few days here… (he laughs, then, off Tru’s look) …Besides, we need the extra help. Especially with your (whispering) Other Job

TRU
Yeah, I guess

DAVIS
Anyway, I’ve got to run. I will see you tonight

TRU
Tonight?

DAVIS
Yeah, Luc’s show

TRU
What show?

DAVIS
Oh, uh, never mind…

TRU
Davis!

DAVIS
Okay. Luc is having a photography show at some gallery. I’m sure it’s no big deal. I was only invited at the last minute

TRU
No, its fine. I mean, it’s totally fine. We broke up, and I’m working tonight anyway. Did I mention its fine?

DAVIS
Yeah, three times

TRU
Well it is. It’s completely and totally…

DAVIS
Fine

Cut to: Shot of the restaurant where Harrison and Lindsay are having their meal

9. INT. Restaurant. NIGHT.

LINDSAY
You didn’t have to go for all this trouble for just three months. Although, I’m so glad that you did. I can’t wait to order dessert, they have this amazing chocolate soufflé here

(Harrison is staring around the room, playing with his napkin)

Is everything okay?

HARRISON
Who? What’s that, hon?

LINDSAY
Nothing, it just looks like you’re planning an escape or something

HARRISON
Yeah…

(Harrison laughs then turns it into a cough as a waiter walks past. He pretends to be choking on something in his throat)

LINDSAY
Oh my God, here, here, drink some water

WAITER
Sir, are you all right?

LINDSAY
Oh my God…

(Harrison stops choking and looks in his hands)

HARRISON
A bone?

(He stands, throwing his napkin on the table)

This was in my veal! I almost choked!

WAITER
I’m terribly sorry, sir. Let me get you another dish

HARRISON
Oh, another dish, huh? And another bone? I don’t think so, pal

WAITER
Well I’m sure the maitre d’ will take your meal off the bill

HARRISON
Oh, my meal? Well, what about hers?

LINDSAY
Harrison, it’s fine, you’re fine. We’re happy to pay for my meal. And thank you for everything

(The waiter nods and walks away)

Harrison! Sit down!

 (He sits)

A fish bone? You ordered veal, you idiot! Let me guess, you don’t have any money, do you?

 (Harrison chuckles)

It’s just one more chapter in the in the Harrison Davies book of disappointments

HARRISON
Who would have thought that Deep Shaker would have won? It was a 20-1 shot! 20-1!

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue

10. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Tru is sitting in the office, watching the TV)

TV REPORTER
In what is amounting to a crime spree, the gunman once again used a customer as a human shield when he held up the Far Side clothing store, shortly after 6 this evening. The fact there were no security…

(Tru’s cellphone rings, she switches the TV off)

TRU (on cellphone)
Hey Linds, how was dinner?

LINDSAY (voice-over)
Great

Cut to: Lindsay walking down the street

LINDSAY
Until your brother pretended to choke on his entrée

Cut to: TRU
What?

Cut to: LINDSAY
He was trying to get his meal comped because he blew all his money at the track today

Cut to: TRU
You’re joking, right?

Cut to: LINDSAY
I know his heart’s in the right place, but I really think I’m at the end of my rope with him

Cut to: TRU
Look, he’s my brother and I love him but…anything you need?

Cut to: LINDSAY
Besides a chocolate soufflé? Look, I’ll call you tomorrow

Cut to: TRU
Okay, bye

(She hangs up and shakes her head)

Harrison…

JACK
Is your brother in trouble? Sorry, I couldn’t help overhearing. Is everything okay?

TRU
Just family stuff

JACK
Siblings. They can get to you like no-one else

TRU
You have brothers and sisters?

JACK
I had a sister. She died a couple of years ago

TRU
I’m so sorry

JACK
Thanks. That’s nice of you. But I really feel like she went to a better place. I know it sounds cliché, but I really believe its true. She was sick, and then she wasn’t. Anyway, I know what you’re going through with your brother. You feel like he’s your responsibility…

TRU
Tell me about it

JACK
Still, sometimes you gotta let them make their own mistakes. Learn the hard way, you know? Speaking of mistakes, I, um, I had this soup from the vending machine…

TRU
Forgot about that on your tour

JACK
Yeah. Anywhere around here a guy can get some edible food?

TRU
Yeah, the diner two blocks up isn’t bad. Actually, I was gonna get some take-out. I’ll get you something

JACK
Only if I can pay

TRU
Sounds like a deal

Cut to: Shot of the Standard Diner Café

Cut to: Shot of the Diner’s clock, it reads 8:04pm

11. INT. Diner. NIGHT.
(Tru enters and walks to the counter)

TRU
Pick-up for Davies

WAITRESS
Couple more minutes

TRU
Okay, I’ll be right over there

(She walks to a booth and sits down. Michelle Carey enters)

MICHELLE
Hello Tru

TRU
Do I know you?

MICHELLE
Michelle Carey. We almost spoke on the phone a couple of times

TRU
Yeah, I’ve got nothing to say to you

MICHELLE
I ran into your brother this morning. He wouldn’t talk to me either. You’ve been dodging my calls for over a month now, I’m sure your boss told you about our chat

TRU
He also told me that he kicked you out of the office

MICHELLE
Aborted suicides, murder attempts, near-accidents. All these rescues. What do you have to say about turning up at all these places before the police do? Or the fact that your mother did the same thing?

TRU
I don’t know what you’re talking about, where are you getting all this?

MICHELLE
It doesn’t matter, Tru. Now’s the time to give me your side of the story, or you’ll read about it in the paper next weekend. I’ll go to print whether I get a quote from you or not

WAITRESS (off-screen)
Order’s up

(Tru gets up and walks over to the counter. Michelle follows her)

MICHELLE
At first I thought you had some sort of hero complex. Setting up these near misses so you could rescue people in the nick of time. But you never took any credit

TRU
There’s nothing to take credit for

(Charlie walks past Tru and Michelle and grabs a blonde woman who is sitting on a bar stool. He thrusts a gun into her chest, and she screams)

CHARLIE
No-one moves or she dies!

(Everyone stops, Tru and Michelle turn round. Charlie points the gun at the waitress)

Empty the register! Quick!

(The waitress begins to empty the money into a bag)

MICHELLE (whispering to Tru)
This guy hit two other places today. He took a hostage each time and let them go

CHARLIE
Everyone shut up!

Cut to: A man sitting at a table, staring at Charlie intently

CHARLIE (cont’d)
Fill it up!

Cut to: The man at the table, he moves his hand to his pocket, revealing a police badge on his belt and a gun in his pocket

CHARLIE (to the waitress)
I am not kidding! I will kill her if you don’t

Cut to: The man takes out his gun and stands

OFFICER
Police Officer! Drop the gun!

(Charlie points the gun at him, the police officer shoots a shot towards them, wounding the blonde girl. Charlie fires back, a bullet hitting Michelle in the chest. Charlie drags the blonde girl out through the fire exit)

TRU (kneeling by Michelle)
Somebody get us some help, hurry!
(to Michelle) It’s gonna be okay, Michelle

 (Michelle is gasping for breath)

It’s gonna be okay, it’s gonna be okay…

(Tru looks around for something to stem the wound and finds a napkin)

Here…hang on, Michelle. Someone call 911, please! Hang on, hang on. Hang on, Michelle. It’s gonna be okay, come on

 (Michelle is fading fast)

Hurry, please!

(Michelle’s eyes close and she stops breathing, her head falls back)

TRU (cont’d)
God, no…

WAITRESS
Is she…?

TRU
Yeah

(She looks down at Michelle, wondering what to do next. Michelle grabs her arm)

MICHELLE
I need you!

[Flashes of the day’s images as it rewinds]

12. INT. Tru’s bedroom. DAY.
(Tru sits up, the telephone is ringing)

TRU
Hello?

Cut to: DAVIS at the Morgue
Tru? Are you up? Because it’s Jack’s orientation today

Cut to: TRU
Tell him I’ll be right there

 (she hangs up)

Again

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the yesterday’s images in the Diner in sequence]

13. INT. Morgue. DAY.

DAVIS
Tru, to be honest, this doesn’t set a good example

TRU
I’m sorry Jack, I didn’t mean to keep you waiting

JACK
It’s all right, I got nowhere to be

TRU
Good. Then, Davis, can I talk to you for one sec? In your office?

DAVIS
Okay

TRU
Be right back

JACK
I’ll be here

15. INT. Davis’s office. DAY.

DAVIS
Michelle the reporter is the one who asked for help?

TRU
Unfortunately. But not before she had all these questions about me saving people

DAVIS
Was there anyone else hurt?

TRU
Well the gunman picked out a customer who was wounded in the crossfire and then he dragged her out of the Diner with him

DAVIS
Now you’ve gotta spend the day trying to save the woman who’s trying to expose you. Jeez Louise, talk about irony. What do you know about the gunman?

TRU
Apparently he was going on some sort of Crime Spree today

[Flashback: MICHELLE: “This guy hit two other places today”]

[Flashback: TV REPORTER: “He held up the Far Side clothing store shortly after 6 this evening”]

TRU (cont’d)
Three places in five hours. An arcade, a clothing store and then the diner. And each time he uses a customer as a shield

DAVIS
That worries me

TRU
Davis, you’re always worried

DAVIS
No, the fact that Michelle’s the one that died concerns me. I believe that some people are fated to die before their time. And I believe that some people are fated to lead to the death of others. If you wind up back at the diner with Michelle, fate could be altered enough where someone else could get shot

TRU
Well, Davis…

DAVIS
Not to mention that if you save her, you’re exposed. Who you are, what you can do. You’ve gotta call the cops, Tru. Cause if you can get the gunman arrested at either of the two places, he’ll never make it to the diner. Michelle will be safe, and so will you

TRU
Okay, fine, I’ll do it

DAVIS
And… you will? That was easy

(Tru walks out of the office, Davis follows her)

Where are you going? I thought you were gonna call the cops

TRU
I am, but I also need to make sure the cops get this guy, otherwise I won’t know that Michelle’s safe

DAVIS
Will you listen to me for a minute?

 (Tru turns around)

Look, I know that you’re good at what you do. But that doesn’t mean I can’t worry

TRU
That means a lot, Davis. Just keep your cell on at Luc’s show, I may need you

DAVIS
Maybe I’ll see you there, you know, if you have time

TRU
Actually I wasn’t invited. Don’t worry, I’ll call you later

(She walks away. Jack is in the doorway. He turns to Davis)

JACK
What about that tour?

DAVIS
Um, you know, personal business. But I’ll give you an orientation later this afternoon

JACK
Tru’s a busy girl

DAVIS
Yeah, she’s got hobbies. A lot of hobbies

16. INT. Morgue Corridor. DAY.
(Harrison meets Tru on the way out)

HARRISON
Hey, hey, what’s the rush?

TRU
Listen Harrison, I think it’s sweet that you remembered your three month anniversary, but I’m not giving you any money

HARRISON
Why would you think that? Why…? Why do reliving days suck for me? Hmm? So, what did I do?

TRU
You went to the track and lost everything I gave you, so  I’m sorry but you’re gonna have to be more creative

HARRISON
Yeah, but…

TRU
And I’m gonna do you an even bigger favour today, I’m gonna borrow your car, so you can’t go to the track at all

HARRISON
No, wait…

TRU
I gotta go

HARRISON
Wait, but…go on! Save everybody but me

 (Jack walks into the corridor)

HARRISON (to himself)
I gotta get a job! … Nah

JACK
Hey, you look a little lost there, bud. Everything okay?

HARRISON
You’ll have to ask my sister

JACK
Oh, you must be Tru’s brother. I’m Jack, the new guy

HARRISON
Jack, Harrison, what’s up

 (they shake hands)

JACK
Hey. You sure everything’s okay?

HARRISON
Uh, yeah it’s nothing. My girl wanted to go out for the anniversary, you know. I was gonna take her to a nice dinner, but I’m all tapped out, so…

JACK
Well, what do you usually do to score some quick cash?

HARRISON
I bet the horses. But I don’t even have start-up cash, so…

JACK
I love the track. Why don’t we go together and I’ll spot you a few bucks

HARRISON
Come on, get out of here

JACK
I got a couple hours till orientation, let’s go

HARRISON
Sweet. Cause if we hurry, we’ll still make the daily double, huh? Check it out

17. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Tru is walking, and talking on her cellphone)

TRU
Yeah, I need to talk to somebody about a potential robbery

OFFICER (on phone)
Hold please

(it rings)

TRU
Come on, come on…

Cut to: Police Station

OFFICER
Desk Sergeant Cooper, how can I help you?

Cut to: TRU
Yeah, someone I know is gonna commit a robbery today. An armed robbery

Cut to: OFFICER
Someone you know? What’s your name, miss?

Cut to: TRU
I’d rather not say

Cut to: OFFICER
This ‘person you know’ give any specifics as to time or place?

Cut to: TRU
Yeah. The Lion’s Lair Arcade on Fifth around three o clock

Cut to: OFFICER
Okay, I’ll bite. What’s this armed man look like?

[Flashback: Charlie in the Diner: “No-one moves or she dies!”]

Cut to: TRU (getting into Harrison’s car)
Uh, mid-twenties, six feet tall, short black hair, he wore…I mean, he’s wearing an orange t shirt under a grey jacket

Cut to: OFFICER
Okay miss, we’ll send an officer to check it out

Cut to: TRU
Thank you, please hurry

(she gets into the car and drives. Camera pans over to Michelle Carey in her car. She pulls out and follows Tru)

18. INT. Bookies. DAY.
(Harrison is waiting his turn to place a bet)

HARRISON
Hey, what’s up Frankie? Give me Twenty on the two horse. Two…

 (He stops and thinks)

Two seconds…

(He walks out of the line. Jack follows him)

JACK
What’s the matter? Second thoughts?

HARRISON
I must have lost when I bet the horse yesterday

JACK
What are you talking about?

HARRISON
No, no…Tru told me that I didn’t, uh…I mean, that the horse didn’t…the horse won’t do well

JACK
I’ve only known Tru for a short period of time, but she doesn’t strike me as an expert on the ponies

HARRISON
No, she’s not. She’s, uh…Tru is like, lucky, man

JACK
So am I, so go with me, and bet the seven horse

HARRISON
Seven, seven. (he looks down at the Racing Post) Aidan’s Luck?

JACK
Aidan’s Luck loves this track. Three for three at this distance. Plus, the jockey/trainer combination win at a 32-percent clip

HARRISON
Right. Right, forgot about that

(He goes back over to Frankie)

Sorry about that. Had to have a quick powwow with my new consultant over there. Give me 20 on lucky seven, to win

19. INT. Arcade. DAY.
(Tru looks at her watch. It reads 2:58pm. She looks around, there is no sign of Charlie. The woman with bright red hair and sunglasses walks past her)

TEENAGER in CAP
Hand ‘em over! Right now!

(Tru turns round, but its only two teenagers. An Officer walks over to them)

OFFICER
Everything okay?

TEENAGER 1
Fine, Sir

TEENAGER in CAP
No problem here, Officer

WOMAN (to Arcade Attendant)
Could I get some change for the parking metre?

(The Officer walks over to the Arcade Attendant)

OFFICER
See anything out of the ordinary today?

ATTENDANT
Besides half my clientele? No

(Tru looks outside. The police car is parked right in front of the Arcade)

OFFICER
Give us a call if you have any problems

TRU (to herself)
They must have seen the cops

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue building

20. INT. Morgue corridor. DAY.
(Luc is walking towards the elevator. As he gets there, it dings and Davis steps out)

LUC
Hey Davis, do you think you’re gonna be able to make it tonight?

DAVIS
Oh yeah, I’m looking forward to it

LUC
Great, great. It’s my first show and I’m afraid the photos are gonna outnumber the people

DAVIS
Well, I know that Tru’s really excited about going, she loves photography and…photo stuff

LUC
Actually I didn’t invite Tru

DAVIS
Oh, really? I had no idea

LUC
Yeah I just, I thought she’s got a lot going on. I didn’t think she’d have the time

DAVIS
Look, I’m no expert on successful relationships, um…or any relationship for that matter, but let me just say this: sometimes people will surprise you

LUC
Well…

 (Davis is already walking away)

21. INT. Michelle’s car. DAY.
(She adjusts her police reception radio)

DISPATCHER
Unit 47, what’s your status on that 211 at the Lion’s Lair Arcade?

OFFICER (over radio)
This is McLain, that 211’s a negative

DISPATCHER
Ten-four

(Michelle looks out of the car’s window over at the Arcade. The Officer is stood outside)

OFFICER (into his radio)
Some nut just called in a false alarm. Premises were checked. Its all clear

 (Tru exits the arcade)

DISPATCHER (over radio)
All right, ten-four, we got you back in service

OFFICER
If that woman calls again, you let her know that false reporting of a crime is a felony

DISPATCHER
Will do. Ten-four

(Michelle watches Tru walking along the street)

MICHELLE (to herself)
What are you up to?

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the day’s images in sequence]

22. INT. Morgue. DAY.

TRU
The gunman never showed up so the robbery never even happened

DAVIS
Your involvement altered the day. He must’ve cased the place

TRU
Saw the cops and took off, right. But now there’s just one problem

DAVIS
The guy’s still out there

TRU
Right. Means crime spree’s still on track, meaning I have no assurance that Michelle’s gonna be safe

DAVIS
Well it might be time for another anonymous tip

TRU
You gonna bail me out after they lock me up? Sorry, its up to me now. I gotta head to that second location

DAVIS
Tru, no…it’s too dangerous

TRU
Davis, I can’t turn my back on fate. Who knows what could happen? I have to do this

DAVIS
Okay. But I want you to take this

(He hands her a medal on a neck chain)

TRU
Saint Benedict medal

DAVIS
It’s for protection. Many people believe it’ll ensure that no harm will come to the body or soul who possess it. It was given to me a long time ago. And I like to think that its kept me safe ever since

TRU
I’m gonna be just fine, D

DAVIS
I hope so

Cut to: Tru running through the crypt and into the corridor. Luc arrives in her path

TRU
Hey

LUC
Hey

TRU
I’m just…

LUC
I know. On your way out the door

 (he steps aside)

Hey, Tru. Listen, I know you’re busy, and this is kinda last minute, but if you get some time tonight I’d love for you to come to my show

 (He hands her a leaflet)

TRU
Thanks. I’ll try

LUC
Well I’ll keep my hopes up

TRU
Bye

LUC
Bye

23. INT. Bookies. DAY.

HARRISON
Thank you Aidan’s Luck. (counting the bills as Frankie hands them over) Two, three, four, five (he takes it and turns to Jack) And thank you! I don’t know what I would have done without you. No, actually, I do

(They laugh, and settle at the bar)

No, I wish Tru could see this! Teach her to have a little faith in her baby bro

JACK
What’s with your sister, anyway? She’s a little overprotective of you, huh?

HARRISON
Ah, she can’t help it. You know, ever since our mom died and the old man bailed, she…she kind of looks over the family

JACK
Maybe that’s why she always seems like she has the weight of the world on her shoulders

HARRISON
Well, yeah, she’s got a lot of other stuff going on

JACK
Like what?

HARRISON
Well more than you can imagine, my friend

JACK
I got a pretty big imagination

HARRISON
Well, she’s…look; she’s one of a kind. But enough about her. More importantly, who do you like in the next race?

JACK
You’re not gonna like it. Deep Shaker

HARRISON
What? He’s 20-1!

JACK
He likes the outside and a dry track. Could be his day. And if you win this bet, you’ll have enough money for six anniversary dinners

HARRISON
Deep Shaker?

JACK
Deep Shaker

HARRISON
Twenty to win. Woo!

24. INT. Clothing Store. DAY.
(Tru looks around the store. As she turns to walk back, she almost bumps into Charlie.)

TRU
Don’t do it!

 (He looks at her)

I know what you’re gonna do. You’re gonna grab someone and try and hold this place up

CHARLIE
I don’t know what you’re talking about

TRU
Hey, listen to me. You haven’t done anything yet. You didn’t hit the arcade because the cops were there, so just stop before someone gets hurt or worse

CHARLIE
Who are you?

TRU
Does it matter?

CHARLIE
Get out of my way!

(He shoves past her and exits the store. A dark-haired lady in a baseball cap starts to walk towards the door)

TRU
Don’t go out there, the guy that just left has got a gun

LADY
Sorry, but I’m in a rush

(Tru goes to grab her to pull her back)

TRU
Hey, didn’t you hear what I sa…

(She catches the girl’s hair and it slips off, along with the cap. The lady is blonde)

[Flashback: the blonde lady hostage at the diner is the same one]

[Flashback: the lady in sunglasses and bright red hair at the arcade that asked for change for the parking metre]

(The lady runs out of the store and across the street. Tru follows, but she gets into a waiting car and it speeds away)

(Tru gets out her cellphone and dials)

DAVIS (voice-over)
Morgue

TRU
Davis, you’re not gonna believe this

Cut to: DAVIS
Well lets be honest, nothing at this point surprises me

Cut to: TRU
He tried to hit the clothing store. I managed to prevent the robbery but not before he got away

Cut to: DAVIS
Well what about the hostage?

Cut to: TRU
Well that’s just it, there isn’t one. This guy isn’t taking a different hostage each time, it’s the same girl at every location. They’re a team

Cut to: DAVIS
Just like Bonnie and Clyde

Cut to: TRU
Kind of, except in this case, Clyde uses Bonnie as a fake hostage

Cut to: DAVIS
Well that’s an interesting twist

Cut to: TRU
I should have known it when he grabbed her out of the diner after she got shot. He wasn’t using her a shield, he wouldn’t leave her behind because…

DAVIS (voice-over)
They’re in it together

TRU
Right…

 (Michelle approaches Tru)

MICHELLE
You’ve been busy today

 (Tru lowers the phone)

Feel like telling me what’s going on?

TRU
Michelle

MICHELLE
I see we don’t need to be formally introduced, even though I don’t remember meeting you

TRU
I recognised your voice

MICHELLE
Really?

TRU
Well you’ve been harassing my phone machine enough the past month

(Camera moves down Tru’s arm showing the phone is still connected to Davis in her hand)

MICHELLE
Well if you’d just talk to me, maybe I’d stop

Cut to: DAVIS listening at the Morgue

TRU (voice-over)
Today is not the day for this

MICHELLE (voice-over)
This is the perfect day

Cut to: Tru and Michelle

MICHELLE (cont’d)
You’re running all over town, calling in false alarms, chasing people out of clothing stores. Just another typical day in the life of Tru Davies

TRU
Michelle…

MICHELLE
I checked police logs, AutoTrack records, your name pops up everywhere, in fact…

TRU
Michelle!

 (She looks up)

You don’t wanna be around me today

MICHELLE
I want your answers, Tru. And I’m not going anywhere until I get them

TRU
Okay. Meet me tonight

MICHELLE
Time and place?

[Flashback: Tru looking up at the Diner clock after Michelle dies. It reads 8:10pm]

TRU
Eight o clock sharp at the Morgue. Just please promise me you’ll wait until I get there

MICHELLE
I’ll be there. And this better be good

 (she walks away)

TRU
Believe me, it’s good

(she lifts the phone to her ear again)

Did you get all that?

DAVIS (voice-over)
Oh, yeah

TRU
She’ll be at the morgue around 8. Make sure she waits until I get there. That way we can make sure she stays alive

Cut to: DAVIS
But even if Michelle isn’t at the diner, someone could still get hurt

Cut to: TRU
Well it’s my job Davis, it’s a chance we’re gonna have to take. I’ll call you later

25. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Davis hangs up the phone. Jack appears at the doorway)

JACK
Did I hear someone mention the diner?

DAVIS
No, I was talking to Tru

JACK
Well is she getting take-out? ‘Cause I could really use a burger

DAVIS
No, she has her hands full

(Jack nods, and leaves him alone)

Cut to: Shot of the restaurant

26. INT. Restaurant. NIGHT.

HARRISON
Before we got there, I’m thinking to myself, it’s gonna be soup and crackers for you and me. Jack, he’s turned me in the direction of this long shot. Now, I’m a little dubious mind you, but Jack said: “If this horse wins, you can buy six anniversary dinners”

LINDSAY (bored)
Mm-hm

HARRISON
Hey, are you gonna eat the rest of this?

(He takes a spoonful of her chocolate soufflé)

Deep Shaker was like, a 20-1 shot. Oh, but Jack had a feeling. And boy, did he ever have a feeling. I’m talking about $400 dollars worth of feelings!

LINDSAY
I have an idea. Why don’t I leave, so you can have dinner with Jack?

HARRISON (not getting it)
What?

LINDSAY
Never mind

(the waiter brings the bill over, and turns to leave)

HARRISON
What a day! What a night! And it ain’t over (he whistles to the waiter) Where you going, chief?

(the waiter turns around, Harrison slaps several bills in his hand)

For your little lady

WAITER
Thank you, sir

LINDSAY (sarcastic)
Oh, no, you ought to thank Jack

HARRISON
Huh?

Cut to: Shot of the Standard Diner Café

Cut to: The Diner clock which reads 7:50pm

27. INT. Diner. NIGHT.
(Tru enters, and looks around. She notes the seat where the Officer sat yesterday, its empty but there is a meal on it)

 [Flashback: OFFICER: “Drop the gun!”]

 (The waitress walks past her)

 [Flashback: CHARLIE: “Everyone shut up!”]

(Tru sits down on a stool at the bar)

[Flashback: A gunshot fires, Michelle falls to the floor]

(The Officer comes out of the bath room, and walks back over to his seat where his meal is still sat. Tru gets up and walks over)

TRU
You’re a policeman, right?

OFFICER
I’m off duty, ma’am. Is there something I can do for you?

TRU (sitting opposite him)
I hope so

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue building – night

28. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Michelle walks along the darkened corridor)

MICHELLE
Hello? Hello?

JACK (off-screen)
Can I help you?

(Camera pans across to reveal Jack is in front of her, apparently appearing from nowhere)

MICHELLE
Oh, hi. I didn’t see you there (she holds out her hand) Michelle Carey, Post-Dispatch

JACK
Sorry, I subscribe to the Times (he shakes her hand)

MICHELLE
I’m not peddling subscriptions. I’m looking for Tru Davies?

JACK
Yeah. Davis said she’s at Standard Diner down the block

MICHELLE
Oh really? She’s supposed to meet me here at 8

JACK
Well I’m sure she’s on her way back

MICHELLE
Yeah, I’m not

JACK
Well, why don’t you just pop in on her? It’s just out the door, two blocks down on your right

MICHELLE
Thanks. I think I will

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the days images in sequence]

29. INT. Diner. NIGHT.
(Tru looks up at the clock. It’s just before 8)

OFFICER
I don’t know who tipped you off, but I don’t see the blonde woman you described, let alone some guy holding up the place

TRU
I don’t understand. They should be here by now. Things couldn’t have changed that much

30. EXT. Charlie’s car. NIGHT.
(Charlie and the blonde girl – Beth – are sitting in the car outside the Diner)

BETH
I can’t believe you’re not gonna do this

CHARLIE
That girl knew we were gonna be at the arcade and the clothing store

BETH
It was a coincidence. Bad luck

CHARLIE
She knows we’re together

BETH
She has no idea who we are, and there’s no way in hell she knows we’re gonna hit this diner

(Charlie sighs, unsure)

Unless you talked to somebody, Charlie

CHARLIE
You think I’m nuts? Why would I tell anyone about this? Look, this is getting out of hand, Beth. This was supposed to be just the two of us having a few kicks, grabbing some quick dough without anyone getting hurt

BETH
And who’s gotten hurt, Charlie?

CHARLIE
No-one, but…

BETH
Exactly, no-one

CHARLIE
We promised each other that the minute there was any trouble, we’re gonna back off

BETH
Meanwhile, we haven’t seen a dime. As for kicks, well, haven’t got much there either

(she reaches down for the gun)

Later, hun. Sorry, but you’re gonna miss all the fun

(she gets out of the car and walks towards the diner)

CHARLIE
Beth…Beth!

31. INT. Diner. NIGHT.

OFFICER
Looks like your friend gave you a bogus tip. Wouldn’t be the first time

TRU
Sorry to have troubled you

OFFICER
Hey, it’s better to be safe than sorry

 (Tru nods, and gets up)

You leaving already? Because, uh, if you’d like to join me for dinner…

TRU
Sorry, but I’ve got another crisis waiting for me back at the office. And unfortunately, this one’s gonna show up

(She moves away. Behind her, the clock reads 8:05pm)

32. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(The diner clock fades into the Morgue clock: 8:06pm. Davis looks up at it, worried. He walks out of the room and over to Jack)

DAVIS
Hey, did a reporter come in here looking for Tru? Long dark hair, mid to late 20s?

JACK
Yeah, Michelle something. About ten minutes ago. I told her Tru was at the diner and she took off

Cut to: Shot of the Standard Diner – NIGHT

33. EXT. Diner. NIGHT
(Tru comes out of the diner, and is walking down the street when she meets Michelle)

MICHELLE
8 o clock at the Morgue, huh?

TRU
Well, I was just gonna pick up some dinner, but…

MICHELLE (looking at Tru’s empty hands)
Eating light?

TRU
Look Michelle, you can’t even begin to understand what’s been going on today…

(She trails off. She has just seen Beth walking into the Diner)

Oh, no. Just wait right here, I’ll be right back

MICHELLE
Oh yeah, like that’s gonna happen!

TRU
Michelle, just wait for me back at the Morgue. It’s for your own good, believe me

MICHELLE
Okay, but you’d better show

34. INT. Diner. NIGHT.
(Tru bursts in just as Beth is holding up the Diner)

BETH
Give me the money right now!

TRU
Don’t do this

BETH
You…

OFFICER (pulling his gun out)
Police Officer, drop the gun!

BETH
Look I don’t know what you’re doing here but just…shut up! Get in the booth

TRU
It’s not gonna end well

BETH
Now!

 (Tru goes to the booth)

BETH (to the waitress)
All right, let’s have it, right now

OFFICER
Drop it, right now

BETH
Hurry up!

OFFICER
Put the gun down, and no-one gets hurt

(Michelle enters the back way, behind Beth. Tru sees her, dismayed. Beth turns around and grabs hold of Michelle, using her as a shield)

BETH
All right. I leave, she lives. Simple as that

TRU
No-one’s been hurt yet, but that could change. In fact, I can almost guarantee its going to

OFFICER
Just let it go, miss

TRU (to Beth)
What if she gets shot? What if she’s killed?

BETH
Look, just shut up!

TRU
Look, everyone knows what you look like. You’re gonna end up alone in prison for the rest of your life, is that what you want?

CHARLIE (off-screen)
No, she doesn’t

(Camera moves to show he has just entered the diner)

Please, Beth. You gotta stop. We never wanted to hurt anyone. This isn’t what we do. We’re not criminals. We’re not even good at it. How else could she have been on to us all day? And if she is, the cops can’t be far behind

TRU
Actually, there’s one right there

(Charlie turns and looks at the Officer)

(Beth sobs, her grip tightening on Michelle)

CHARLIE
Beth, please. Let this woman go

(Music builds until Beth finally lets go of Michelle. Michelle runs out the back exit)

OFFICER
Put down the gun and kick it to me

(Beth puts both hands on the trigger)

OFFICER
DROP THE GUN!

(Beth slowly puts the gun on the floor)

OFFICER
Over here

(Beth kicks the gun away. The Officer stops it with his foot. Charlie runs over to hug her. The Officer picks up the gun)

(The door opens and a police woman runs in with a gun)

POLICE WOMAN
Police! Put the gun down!

OFFICER
I’m from 64th Precinct. Badge number 83049

OFFICER 2
Police!

(They grab hold of Charlie and Beth)

OFFICER
How’d you get here so quick?

POLICE WOMAN
Got a 911 call from the coroner’s office about a hold-up in progress. Said he was worried about his friend here

(Tru quickly edges out of the diner)

35. EXT. Street. NIGHT

LINDSAY (on the phone)
So, Harrison spent a fortune on dinner

TRU (voice-over)
He did?

LINDSAY
Yep. And he also spent the entire evening talking about his new track buddy named Jack

Cut to: TRU (walking along the street)
No kidding?

Cut to: LINDSAY
Why do I have a feeling if a couple of long shots hadn’t come in, I would’ve been eating a frozen pizza instead of a soufflé?

Cut to: TRU
Hey, I’m not gonna try and convince you otherwise. Are you gonna be all right, Linds?

Cut to: LINDSAY
Meh, ask me in the morning

Cut to: TRU
Okay. Good night

(she hangs up. Michelle comes up behind her)

MICHELLE
I think you owe me an explanation

TRU
God, I’ve had it with you! It’s not enough I just saved your ungrateful as… (she stops, sighs and composes herself) Okay, you want the truth?

MICHELLE
That’s all I ever wanted

TRU
Well, then turn on that tape recorder

(Michelle turns it on and holds it out)

TRU (cont’d)
Yesterday I went to the diner. You were following me, just like you did today

MICHELLE
Yesterday? I didn’t go to the…

TRU
Do you wanna hear this or not? There was a hold-up at the diner. You were shot, and killed. After you died, you asked for my help. The day rewound and now I’m reliving yesterday

MICHELLE
What?

TRU
In order to keep you from dying, I had to try and prevent a crime spree. Which you tipped me off on yesterday, and thanks for that by the way. But you ended up at the diner anyway, because that’s how fate wanted it

MICHELLE
So now you want me to think you’re just plain nuts? Nice try. But its not gonna work. I don’t know exactly what happened back there, but you and I aren’t done

Cut to: Shot of City Morgue front door

36. INT. Morgue corridor. NIGHT.
(Tru approaches the elevator, it dings and Luc steps out)

TRU
Luc, hey

LUC
Yeah…

TRU
(gasps) Your show! I wanted to be there, I really did. It’s just, my day, it wouldn’t end

LUC
Tru, you don’t have to explain. I invited you because I wanted you there, not because I thought you would be. It’s okay, really

TRU
Well hey, how’d it go?

LUC
Pretty good. Had a decent turn out. Sold two prints. It was a good night for me

TRU
That’s good. I’m glad

LUC
You know, I thought for a while that maybe I could change our fate, but…I guess fate’s one thing you just can’t change

37. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Tru walks into the room, Davis is pacing around)

DAVIS
Oh, thank God

TRU
Its okay, Davis. I’m in one piece. And Michelle lives to see another day

DAVIS
I’ll reserve judgement whether that’s a good thing or not. So did the medallion…? Did it keep you safe?

TRU
No, Davis. It was you who kept me safe. You called the police

DAVIS
Well it’s the least I could do after letting Michelle out of my sight

TRU
Anyway, thanks (she tries to hand the medallion back)

DAVIS
No, no, no. That’s yours to keep

TRU
Aw, I appreciate it. Thanks, D

DAVIS
Yeah

TRU
One thing: I’m in danger all the time. I mean, dodging bullets, chasing bad guys. But today, the medallion, making me call the police…why were you so worried about me today?

DAVIS
Well, for one, there was Michelle. But the truth is, I worry about you every day, Tru. Today, I just…I just wanted to help

 (Tru smiles, and walks out)

38. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Jack closes a drawer with a dead body on it. Tru walks in to see him)

TRU
You have a fun day at the races?

JACK
Actually, we did. Your brother’s a pretty cool guy

TRU
I happen to think so too. Just not sure why you had to go to the track to figure that out

JACK
Don’t worry so much. Harrison’s a big boy. He can take care of himself. Besides, he won, didn’t he?

TRU
Well, I’m his sister, and I know Harrison a lot better than you do, and what’s best for him

JACK
Maybe so. But you know what? You can’t take care of everyone, Tru

 (he leaves the room)

TRU
That isn’t gonna stop me from trying
