--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PROLOGUE

1. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Davis closes a drawer in the Morgue, and sees Tru there, smiling at him)

DAVIS
You’re happy

TRU
Why shouldn’t I be? I’m 22 years old, I’m healthy. I have a nice guy that I work with

DAVIS
Who, me?

TRU
Yes, you Davis. I have good friends, a cute boy who I can almost call my boyfriend, and every week or so I get a shout-out from a corpse, and…

(They walk out to the corridor together)

DAVIS
You relive the day

TRU
It comes in handy, you know. Bad day, do it over. Bad outfit, quick wardrobe change

DAVIS
Premature death?

TRU
Prevent it from happening

DAVIS
Well, Wonder Woman has nothing on you

TRU
Except for the pointy bras and the invisible plane, no

DAVIS (chuckles)
Well it’s nice to see you making peace with it

TRU
Well, let’s be honest. It’s not like I really have a choice. I don’t think those people will take no for an answer

DAVIS
Well just out of curiosity, who else have you told about what you can do?

TRU
Just my brother. Not that he believes me. Except when he thinks he can make a buck on the ponies

DAVIS
Anyone else?

TRU
No. Not my sister, or Lindsay. Definitely not Luc, it’s hard enough to date without dropping that bomb

DAVIS
What about your father?

TRU
It’s kinda hard to tell someone who doesn’t want to talk to you. It’s funny…I can prevent death but I can’t make a father take interest in his own daughter

DAVIS
Tru…

TRU
I know, too much information

DAVIS
No. But I just want you to remember that a gift like yours is never simple. But somewhere there’s someone who’s gonna be very grateful for what you can do. Maybe even today

 (Camera fades into next scene)

2. INT. Military Hospital. DAY.
(Jake sits on his bed, staring into space)

DOCTOR (coming into the room)
Jake. We, uh, just got your CAT scan back

JAKE
And?

DOCTOR
And, uh… (He closes the door)
Why don’t we talk for a moment?

3. INT. Military Hospital. DAY.
(Jake is buttoning up his uniform. A nurse walks in behind him)

NURSE
Jake, what are you doing out of bed? And why are you wearing your uniform? You know you’re supposed to be in your robe. Jake?

(Jake ignores her, and walks out of the room)

NURSE
Jake?

(Jake walks determinedly down the corridor, staring ahead. He comes close to the enquiry desk, where an M.P. sits, reading a newspaper.)

M.P. (standing up)
No go, corporal. You know the rules

JAKE
I need to get out of here

M.P.
Jake, I’m sorry. You know the doc said to take it easy

JAKE
I’ll be back in a couple of hours. I just gotta do something, one thing!

M.P.
Come on, back inside. You’re not even supposed to be out here…

(He tries to lead Jake back down the corridor, but Jake doubles over, groaning in pain)

Jake, you okay? You all right?

JAKE
I’m just…

(He grabs the M.P.‘s gun from his belt, and straightens up, pointing the gun at him)

M.P.
What are you doing? Don’t be stupid

JAKE
I told you, I gotta get out of here

M.P.
Jake…come on, listen to me

JAKE
I just talked to the doc, and…Listen, I’ll be back in a couple of hours. You won’t even miss me

(A gunshot fires. Jake collapses to the ground)

(The M.P. looks down the corridor, and sees another uniformed M.P., armed with a gun)

M.P.
What the hell was that?!

M.P. 2
He had a gun. I saw he had a gun

M.P.
It was Jake, for God’s sake! Just Jake!

(He feels Jake’s neck for a pulse)

He’s dead…

 [Flashes of Jake being shot]

3. INT. Tru’s bedroom. DAY.
(Tru is in bed, asleep. The telephone rings several times before the answerphone takes over with Tru saying “Hey, it’s Tru. Leave a message”)

RICHARD DAVIES
Hello Tru, its your father

 (Tru opens her eyes)

I know it’s been a while but, I’d like to talk to you when you get the chance. You know where to reach me. Goodbye

4. INT. Standard Café. DAY.
(Meredith, Tru and Harrison are having breakfast)

MEREDITH
Dad called you too?

TRU
Yeah, why, you?

MEREDITH
Yeah, and Harrison also

HARRISON
Mmm, he’s sweet like that. Every five years, no matter how busy he is, he drops everything and he calls

TRU
What’d he say?

HARRISON
It was a short, unpleasant conversation. He asked if I had a job yet

MEREDITH
He asked if I had a husband yet

HARRISON
Just like the old guy. Charming as ever

MEREDITH
So what he ask you?

TRU
Nothing

HARRISON
Nothing?

TRU
I didn’t call him back yet. I will, just a little later though

HARRISON
You believe that SOB? Doesn’t talk to us in ages, and when he does, all he wants to do is criticize

TRU
I wonder what he would have asked me

HARRISON
“You work in a Morgue?!”

MEREDITH
“And you’re not a doctor yet?”

TRU
Sounds about right

HARRISON
Well, look at the bright side. At least you got a job

MEREDITH
Yeah, and a guy

HARRISON (with a mouthful of toast)
Mm-hmm

 (Tru smiles at them)

5. EXT. Street. DAY
(Tru walks along, her cellphone rings)

TRU
Hello?

Cut to: LUC (also on a street)
Hey, it’s me

Cut to: TRU
Hey, how’s Grandma? How’s Rochester?

Cut to: LUC
One is feeling better; the other is way too far away from you

Cut to: TRU
Well good news, Davis is letting me take an early shift so we can finally have our night alone

Cut to: LUC
That’s great…

TRU (voice-over)
But?

LUC
But there’s a small problem. Train derailment. They shut down all routes up and down the entire seaboard

Cut to: TRU
Oh, wonderful

LUC
But don’t worry, I’ll figure something out. It’s gonna take more than a train derailment to keep us apart

 (Smiling, Tru hangs up)

6. INT. Café. DAY.
(Harrison gets up from the table, and walks towards the door, taking a piece of paper from his pocket. Camera scans the page to see it’s the Job section)

HARRISON
Hmm. Oh well, what the hell

Cut to: Shot of an office block

7. INT. Interview Room. DAY.
(Harrison is wearing jeans, a t shirt and a brown leather jacket, slouching in his chair with one leg half crossed over the other in front of the interviewer)

MARJORIE
You don’t have a resume?

HARRISON
Let’s be honest. What is a “resume” anyway? A list of jobs that didn’t work out (he laughs) No, seriously, I believe in starting fresh. I’m always looking forward. Never back

MARJORIE
Mm-hm. And, tell me, what are some of the unique qualities that you could bring to this job?

HARRISON
Mm…laughs. A lot of laughs, Marjorie. Oh…do you mind if I call you Marjorie?

Cut to: Shot of City Morgue building and the main door

8. INT. Morgue Office. DAY.
(Tru is sitting in front of the computer. The door squeaks open, Tru looks round)

MEREDITH
Not as creepy as I thought it’d be

TRU
Meredith, what a surprise

MEREDITH
Figured we’re actually getting along today, why not push our luck? Also thought you’d like to know our brother went on a job interview today

TRU
Dad really got to him, huh?

MEREDITH
Yeah, well, not enough to keep him from totally tanking the interview

TRU
Why, what happened?

MEREDITH
Oh, same old thing. Wore the wrong thing, said the wrong thing, didn’t even bring a resume. Let’s face it, Harry’s not exactly the 9-5 type

TRU
That’s what you came round to tell me?

MEREDITH
Um, no, actually. I came to find out what Dad said to you

TRU
Don’t know. Haven’t called back

MEREDITH
Oh. But you will, right?

TRU
Why should I? So he can pass judgement on me too? I mean, look how he made you feel. And Harrison. Look, Dad’s off in Connecticut with a new wife, a new life, and every five years he calls his kids and we’re supposed to jump?

MEREDITH
Well, he’s still our father Tru

TRU
Yeah, our father, who art in Greenwich

(They gaze at each other for a few seconds. Then Davis walks from his office into the crypt; Meredith looks up)

MEREDITH
Who’s that?

TRU
Davis. My boss

MEREDITH
Hm. Cute

 (Tru gapes at her)

In that “he’s so not my type” kinda way

TRU
Wait a second, I know what Dad said to you, but please don’t tell me you’re thinking…

MEREDITH
He’s a doctor, am I right?

TRU
Yeah, but…

DAVIS
Tru, thought I’d let you know I’m gonna take my lunch break now. I’m sorry, I didn’t know you had company

MEREDITH
Hi! I’m Tru’s sister, Meredith

DAVIS
Oh, hi. Tru didn’t tell me she had a younger sister

 (Meredith giggles)

MEREDITH
Well, actually, I’m her older sister

DAVIS
Oh, I’m shocked. Your epidermal layer is flawless

MEREDITH
You know, I haven’t eaten all day. I mean, if you wouldn’t mind some company?

DAVIS
Really?

(Tru looks speechless, Meredith smiles and nods)

9. INT. Café. DAY.

DAVIS
So the gentleman’s aorta was literally wrapped around his left ventricle, and I’ve never seen anything like it. And not to mention that his, uh, inferior vena cava…uh, an interesting thing about that is that…

MEREDITH
Is there anything else that we could talk about besides autopsies?

DAVIS
Sure

MEREDITH
Great

DAVIS
So…you a Lord of the Rings fan?

MEREDITH
No, sorry

DAVIS
Would you like me to finish the autopsy story? ‘Cause it really does contain a lot of interesting…

MEREDITH
No, thank you

 (She peers past Davis)

Oh! Look at that, isn’t that the bailiff from Judge Stern’s court? I’ll be right back

(She gets up and walks over to the guy who has just walked in)

Jim! So nice to see you. I didn’t recognise you without your uniform

10. INT. Morgue Office. Evening.

TRU
She walked out on you?!

DAVIS
Not literally. (he clears his throat) Okay, literally. She spotted some bailiff she knew. Next thing I know, she’d riding off on his motorcycle

TRU
Davis, I am so sorry. She’s a little unpredictable sometimes. Not to mention my father has us all acting a little crazy today

DAVIS
Well, it’s not the first time its happened. Just the quickest. I should’ve known a girl like that wouldn’t be interested in a guy like me

(Davis walks out of the room. Tru sighs, then the phone rings. She goes across to answer it)

TRU
Morgue … You’re where?

Cut to: LUC (in a car, looking at a map)
Oh, about 80 miles west of where I’m supposed to be

Cut to: TRU
Oh, what happened?

Cut to: LUC
The rental agency gave me directions

Cut to: TRU
Bad ones?

LUC
Not if I wanted to go to Cleveland…look, I know we were both looking forward to tonight but it doesn’t look like I’m getting home before dawn

Cut to: TRU
That’ll teach us to make a plan

Cut to: LUC
We’ll have our night soon. Promise

(Behind Tru, Gardez knocks on the office window, wheeling a trolley)

GARDEZ
Incoming

TRU (to Luc)
Okay, I gotta go. Drive safe, okay?

LUC (voice-over)
Bye

TRU
Bye

 [Flashes of Jake being shot]

11. INT. Crypt. NIGHT.
(Gardez unzips the body bag to reveal Jake’s body)

GARDEZ
Corporal Jake Voight, 21, just got home from a tour in the middle east

TRU
What happened?

GARDEZ
A disturbance at the Army hospital. One of the M.P’s had an itchy trigger finger

 (Tru and Davis exchange glances)

TRU
Time of death?

GARDEZ
10.a.m on the dot. Slight jurisdiction problem, otherwise we would have had him sooner

DAVIS
It looks like a clean shot. Probably died instantly

GARDEZ
He survived the war. Couldn’t survive coming home, huh?

DAVIS
Shipped out from Port McAllister 18 months ago. He was wounded in battle, took a bullet in the thigh, clean bill of health and they sent him home

GARDEZ
Doc said he was a hero, saved his entire squad in Afghanistan

TRU
Do you know anything else about him?

GARDEZ
What, are you writing his biography?

DAVIS
Maybe rewriting it

TRU (looks in Jake’s jacket pocket, taking out a small newspaper clipping)
The Army notify his family?

GARDEZ
No-one to notify. Army said there is no next of kin

DAVIS
It’s a shame. No one should have to die alone

(Tru looks at the clipping, it shows a graduation class, with a girl on the podium. The headline reads: “Valedictorian Bridget Elkins addresses her fellow graduates in Class of 2002”)

Do me a favour, Tru. Take him down to Number 2, I’ll do an autopsy tonight

12. INT. Morgue corridor. NIGHT.

(Tru wheels the trolley down towards the drawers. Suddenly, the wheel jams. Tru tries to push the trolley forward but it won’t budge. She bends down to look at the wheels, they look fine. Puzzled, Tru looks back up to the trolley, and Jake’s head twists round to face her)

JAKE
I need you

[Flashes of the days images as it rewinds]

(Tru wakes up in bed, the telephone ringing. The answerphone takes over)

RICHARD DAVIES:
Hello Tru, it’s your father. I know it’s been a while but, I’d like to talk to you when you get the chance

[Flashes of the days images rewind]
 [Fade to Black]

13. EXT. Street. DAY.

TRU
Hey, I can’t make it to breakfast today

Cut to: HARRISON in the Café
How about one of these days letting me know the night before so…I don’t have to wake up so early!

Cut to: TRU
Sorry. I never know when these things are gonna come up

Cut to: HARRISON
By the way, I got an interesting call this morning

Cut to: TRU
Yeah, me too

HARRISON (voice-over)
You know what he said to me? Wondered when I was gonna get a job

Cut to: TRU
Look, here’s the thing Harry, none of us will ever be good enough for him, nothing we do will ever…

Cut to: HARRISON
Whoa, whoa, whoa, you don’t think I know that? I stopped trying to impress the guy when I turned 14

Cut to: TRU
Harry…

Cut to: HARRISON
Yeah

Cut to: TRU
I just wanted to say, employers like resumes. They like applicants who dress nice, and who know their business

Cut to: HARRISON
Tru, what’s this about?

Cut to: TRU
Nothing, nothing at all. Oh, and one more thing, make sure Meredith doesn’t stop by the Morgue today, okay?

14. INT. Café. DAY.
(Meredith sits down in front of Harrison with her cup of coffee)

HARRISON
Okay. Whatever

 (He hangs up the phone)

MEREDITH
Who was that?

HARRISON
Tru. She can’t make breakfast

MEREDITH
No surprise there

HARRISON
Oh, and she said not to stop by the morgue later

MEREDITH
Stop by the morgue? Why would she think I’d ever stop by the morgue?

HARRISON
I don’t know. Why would she ever think I need a resume?

Cut to: Shot of clouds, thunder breaking in the sky

Cut to: Shot of the city traffic moving below

15. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Tru is walking with her umbrella, talking on her cellphone)

TRU
No, I’m serious

LUC
Train derailment?

TRU
Yeah, you haven’t heard? Because it’s all over the news down here

LUC
Well it’s a good thing you told me. I’d hate to get stuck in Rochester all day

TRU
Why don’t you take the bus? I know for a fact there’s one that leaves in half an hour

LUC
That’s impressive. Weird, but impressive. But you know, I’m not much for buses. I think I’ll just spring for a rental car instead

TRU
No, no

LUC
Don’t you wanna see me tonight?

TRU
No, of course, I do, it’s just I wanna make sure you have the proper directions

LUC
Why do I have a feeling you’re gonna tell me what they are?

 (Tru smiles)

16. INT. Military Hospital. DAY.
(The lift bell dings. Tru walks out of it, into the corridor. She walks over to the enquiry desk)

TRU
Hi, Jake Voight?

SOLDIER (looking at a clipboard)
Down the hall, room 248

TRU
Thanks

(She walks down the corridor until she reaches the room. The door is slightly open. Inside, Jake is sitting on his bed, facing away from her)

[Flashback of Jake’s dead body on the trolley, with Tru, Gardez and Davis standing by it]

[Flashback of Jake asking for help. JAKE: “I need you”]

(A nurse comes out of Jake’s room)

TRU
Hi. I’m here to see a patient

NURSE
I’m sorry, visiting hours don’t start until noon

TRU
Noon?

[Flashback. TRU: “Time of death?”, GARDEZ: “10.am on the dot”]

Uh, I can’t wait until noon. In fact…(she checks her watch, it reads 9:35) I can’t wait much longer at all.

Jake’s an old friend of mine, from basic. I heard he was here…

NURSE
I’m sorry miss; he’ll still be here in two hours

TRU
Please, you don’t understand

NURSE
I understand fine. We’ll see you at noon

(Tru turns around and walks back down the corridor. She passes the Doctor; the camera follows him into Jake’s room)

17. INT. Jake’s room. DAY.

DOCTOR
Jake. We, ah, just got your CAT scan back

JAKE
And?

DOCTOR
And, uh, why don’t we talk for a moment?

18. INT. Military Hospital corridor. DAY.

(Tru walks down the corridor, past the enquiry desk. She sees a nurse coming out of a room, putting on a cardigan. Tru walks down to the room, it’s the Nurses Lounge. Quickly and quietly, she enters, closing the door behind her. Camera shows two words in big black letters: STAFF ONLY)

19. INT. Military Hospital. DAY.

(Tru walks out of the Nurses Lounge, dressed in a nurses uniform)

20. INT. Jake’s room. DAY.
(Jake is putting on his uniform. A nurse behind him looks up)

NURSE
Jake. What are you doing out of bed? And why are you wearing your uniform? You know you’re supposed to be in your robe. Jake? Jake?

(Jake walks out of the room, into the corridor)

Cut to: Tru walking down the corridor, carrying a clipboard. She sees Jake coming the other way, turns around

NURSE
Excuse me, nurse?

(She is wheeling a man in a wheelchair)

TRU
Yes?

NURSE
The patient wants a second opinion. I’ve got a healthy male with a swollen leg. Ibuprofen and bed rest, right?

M.P (down the corridor, to Jake)
No go, corporal. You know the rules

PATIENT
I’ve told you, I’ve done that for four days already. I think I should see the doctor

TRU
Smoker?

PATIENT
Once in a while

TRU
Could have DVT. You might wanna do an ultrasound. That’s just me

(Tru looks at the corridor clock; it is a minute before 10)

JAKE
I need to get out of here

M.P.
I’m sorry, Jake

NURSE (to the patient as she wheels him away)
Maybe you should stick around a little longer

(Down the corridor, Jake points a gun at the M.P.)

M.P.
What are you doing? Don’t be stupid!

TRU
No!

(She runs up the corridor towards them)

JAKE
I gotta get out of here. I just talked to the doc, and…

TRU
Jake, put down the gun, please

M.P.
Listen to her, Jake

JAKE
I’ll be back in a couple hours okay? You won’t even miss me

(The uniformed armed M.P. is down the corridor, pointing his gun at Jake)

TRU
No, don’t!

(She moves closer to Jake, so the armed man can’t shoot him. Jake grabs Tru round the neck and steers her towards the exit)

M.P.
Jake! Let her go!

JAKE
I told you, I just gotta get out of here

M.P.
(To the armed M.P.) Don’t move
(To Jake) Just take it easy

(Jake and Tru go through the exit door, leaving everyone staring after them)

21. EXT. Military Hospital grounds. DAY.

JAKE
I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to scare you

(He throws the gun in the bushes)

Now listen, tell them I’ll be back as soon as I can

TRU
Wait, where are you going? Jake!

(Jake runs over the grounds towards an Army vehicle. The door behind Tru bursts open, and the two M.P.’s run out followed by a doctor. One of the M.P.s retrieves his gun)

M.P.
You okay, nurse?

TRU
I’m fine

(They both run after the vehicle, but Jake is already driving away)

So’s Jake

DOCTOR
I’m not sure I’d say that

TRU
Why?

DOCTOR
Because if we don’t find him soon, the next time you see him, he’ll be dead

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the days images as they rewind]

22. INT. Military Hospital. DAY.

DOCTOR
Jake was wounded overseas. The doctors removed the bullet, and send him back to the States to recuperate. Two weeks ago, we learned that a bullet fragment had become dislodged and settled in his pulmonary artery

TRU
So you removed the fragment?

DOCTOR
We tried, but he began haemorrhaging during surgery

TRU
When do you try again?

DOCTOR
Well until this morning we had no plans

TRU
What happened this morning?

DOCTOR
A CAT scan revealed that an embolism had formed. We have no other choice but to open him up again. Because if the embolism ruptures the artery…

TRU
He’ll die immediately

DOCTOR
That kind has a time bomb ticking inside of him. So let’s just hope that the M.P.s find him before it goes off

Cut to: Shot of the City Morgue building and front door

23. INT. Morgue corridor. DAY.

TRU
I don’t get it. I save a guy from dying only to learn that he could be dead by the end of the day

DAVIS
Unfortunately, once the symptoms set in, sweating, shortness of breath, it’s only a matter of hours

TRU
Even if I find him before the embolism kills him, there’s no guarantee he’ll survive the surgery

(They walk through the crypt, into Davis’s office)

DAVIS
Okay, let’s just think…you told me that Jake said he had something to do

TRU
Yeah, that’s what I heard him tell the M.P.

DAVIS
Okay. If you knew that you were gonna die in a matter of hours, what would you do?

TRU
I don’t know! Cry, get drunk, say goodbye…But according to his enlistment papers, Jake has no family. No next of kin

[Flashback of Tru looking at the newspaper clipping of Bridget Elkins at Graduation]

There was a photo…in his wallet, a picture of a girl. Her name is Bridget Elkins, she couldn’t be much older than 19

(Davis types the name into his computer)

DAVIS
Well, there’s no Bridget. There is a George Elkins, at 567 Charleston Road. It could be her father

TRU
I’ll take it, thanks Davis

DAVIS
Oh by the way, you just missed your sister

TRU
She came here?

DAVIS
Yeah

TRU
You guys didn’t happen to make plans by any chance?

(Davis looks at her. Tru looks pained)

DAVIS (looking away)
I can take it. How bad did it go

TRU
She dumped you for a bailiff on a motorcycle

 (Davis sighs)

Davis, look, she’s my sister and I love her but she’s complicated.

DAVIS
I should’ve known a girl like Meredith would never go for a guy like me

TRU
You really liked her, huh?

DAVIS
Yeah

TRU
I may regret this but, take notes. I’m gonna tell you everything you need to know about my sister

Cut to: Shot of the traffic as it passes the Standard Café

24. INT. Café. DAY.

DAVIS
Well, London yes, but to be honest with you, the city that I really love is Dublin

MEREDITH
I-I lived in Dublin my junior year!

DAVIS
Oh, that’s amazing! That’s so cool. Next thing you know you’re gonna tell me that you’re thinking of moving back there

MEREDITH
Okay, now this is getting weird

 (They laugh)

(Behind Davis, the bailiff approaches the counter)

DAVIS
Is that someone you know?

MEREDITH
No, no-one important

DAVIS
Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my love for animals. I love all kinds. Dogs, cats, I adore horses

MEREDITH (getting it)
I see. So Tru did a pretty good job, huh? Telling you what to say. Well let me tell you something Tru doesn’t know about me: I don’t want a guy to be just like me. I want a guy to be himself. That’s what really impresses me

DAVIS
Be myself

MEREDITH
Yeah!

DAVIS
Okay, I can do that

MEREDITH
Good

DAVIS
So, ah…you a Lord of The Rings fans?

 (Meredith’s smile fades)

25. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Tru pulls up in Harrison’s car, outside the Elkins’ address)

TRU
567 Charleston

(She gets out of the car and walks over the house. Jake is sitting on the front steps)

Jake…you okay?

JAKE
She’s gone. They left

 (He looks up at her)

Hey you’re that nurse…from the hospital

 (Hw looks around fearfully)

TRU
Hey, hey, it’s okay. I’m alone. You have to go back. Without that surgery, you’ll die

JAKE
And with it, I hear my chances aren’t that much better. Anyway, I’m not going back until I find her

TRU
Bridget?

 (Jake looks at her curiously)

26. EXT. Street. DAY.
(Jake and Tru are sitting side by side on the steps)

JAKE
I was 18. I was stationed at McAllister. She was finishing her senior year in high school.

TRU
You were in love with her

JAKE
Oh, yeah. Yeah, crazy love. Like, I saw her, and…I just knew. Luckily, she felt the same way. Or so I thought

TRU
What happened?

JAKE
I don’t know. That’s just it. I had a 48-hour pass before I was shipped out. The greatest two days of my life. Just me and Bridget. Then I deploy, and the telegram shows up. She said she never wanted to see me again. That we were over. Done. I called, but her number was changed. I wrote, but the letters came back to me

TRU
If you don’t mind me asking, what makes you want to see her now?

JAKE
As much as I’d like to, there are a lot of things I can’t forget. About war. About seeing your best buddies shot down in the desert, 8000 miles from home. But the one thing I can’t remember is the one thing I swore I’d never forget. Her face

 (He reaches into his pocket)

All I have left is this

 (He unfolds the newspaper clipping)

I could die. On the table, or right now. And if I do…

TRU
You don’t know that

JAKE
And if I do…I don’t wanna close my eyes and not be able to see her face

(He laughs nervously, wiping his eyes)

Of course, now she’s gone. Can’t find her anywhere

TRU
Well, there are a lot of ways to find someone Jake

JAKE
Really

TRU
If I help you, do you promise me you’ll go back and get that surgery?

JAKE
Sure. Still, I don’t know how we’re gonna find her. The house is empty. They moved. Look inside, all that’s left are lightbulbs and old magazines

TRU
Old magazines?

27. INT. Bridget’s old house. DAY.
(Tru is on her cellphone, holding one of the magazines)

TRU
Hi, this is Bridget Elkins. How am I? To tell you the truth, not too good. I’ve called three times this month and I still can’t get you people to send your magazine to my new address… Yeah… just so it doesn’t happen again, can you do me a favour and confirm that you have the correct forwarding address? Yes … 4963 Denson, that’s it. Thanks very much

(She flips the phone shut and looks at Jake who is nodding and smiling)

Cut to: Shot of the office blocks

28. INT. Interview room. DAY.
(Harrison and Marjorie are laughing. Harrison is dressed in a suit, his hair brushed and straight)

MARJORIE
You have no idea how many applicants turn up without a resume!

HARRISON
No

MARJORIE
Oh, yes! I mean, just having one puts you at the top of my list. Of course, I don’t notice any prior experience in real estate

HARRISON
Oh, well that’s because I don’t have any. But look, I’ve been selling something to someone since I was 16, and what I found is, as long as you listen to the customer, you can be successful no matter what your product is

MARJORIE
All right then, what are some of the unique qualities you could bring to this job?

HARRISON
Laughs. A lot of laughs, Marjorie. But, seriously, passion, sincerity, and a little thing I like to call persistence. Unique? Maybe not. But what this company needs? Absolutely

29. EXT. Elkins House. DAY.
(Tru and Jake drive up in the car)

TRU
Here we are

JAKE
Whoa. Looks like Mr Elkins has been doing okay for himself. How do I look?

TRU
Great

JAKE
Well, not bad for a dead man anyway

TRU
Come on, stop that

 (Jake coughs)

Hey…you’re sweating…

[Flashback: DAVIS: “Once the symptoms set in, shortness of breath, sweating, it’s only a matter of hours]

You stay here. I’ll get her. Now you promise, as soon as you see her, it’s right back to the hospital

JAKE
Yes, yeah. Just, ah, one thing. If her father answers the door, don’t mention my name

TRU
Why not?

JAKE
Bridget’s a smart girl. He’s got big plans for her. Falling in love with a soldier is not one of them. Probably can’t blame him. I mean, does your dad like the guys you bring home?

TRU
He never met them

JAKE
Oh, I’m sorry. He’s dead?

TRU
Just by choice

(Tru gets out of the car and walks up to the house, and knocks on the front door)

30. INT. Elkins house. DAY.
(Mr Elkins opens the door to Tru)

GEORGE
Hello

TRU
Hi. Is Bridget home?

GEORGE
No. She’s out right now

TRU
Could you tell me where I might find her?

GEORGE
I’m sorry, you are?

TRU
A friend of hers, from high school? You must not recognise me…Tru Davies!

GEORGE
No, I can’t say that I…

TRU
New nose. And I lost 20 pounds too, don’t be embarrassed. You wouldn’t be the first

GEORGE
Tru, yes of course. Why don’t you come in for a moment um, Tru

(Tru smiles and enters, George shuts the door after her)

31. INT. Elkins house. DAY.

GEORGE
Now, what’s so urgent?

TRU
Well, I’m only in town for a few hours. In fact, I’m on my way to the airport now, and if I didn’t see Bridget, I…

GEORGE
Well, she’s at school. She’s got class all afternoon. I could tell her that you stopped by if you’d like

TRU
Or I could swing by campus if you just point me in the right direction

GEORGE
Look, she’ll be back from the JC in a few hours

TRU
Junior college, but Bridget was the valedictorian, she could have written her own ticket

(George looks at her, suddenly a car’s brakes screech outside. He goes over to the window. An Army vehicle is parked behind Tru’s car, an M.P. walks over to the car and opens the door)

M.P. (outside)
Come on Jake, we’re going back to the hospital right now

GEORGE
Jake?

(He turns around to look at Tru)

Who are you? Did you bring Jake here, is that why you came?

TRU
Yes, but you don’t understand, he needs to see Bridget

GEORGE
You leave my house. And you stay away from my daughter!

32. EXT. Street. DAY.
(One of the M.P.’s leads Jake to the van)

JAKE
I said, let go!

TRU (running over)
Jake, you have to go with them

JAKE
I came to see Bridget, I didn’t even see her

TRU
I know where she is. I promise you Jake, I’ll find her

 (Jake coughs badly)

 Just please go…

(Jake stops coughing, and looks at his hand to see there’s blood on it)

Oh my God…  Hurry, get him back now

M.P.
Come on, let’s go. They’re not too happy about that jeep by the way

(Tru walks close to the open window, where Jake is leaning against it inside the car)

TRU
Hey, I’ll find her

JAKE (nods)
You know, I don’t even know your name

TRU
Tru

JAKE
Tru… you’re not really a nurse are you?

TRU
What makes you say that?

JAKE
You’re some sort of angel

(The Army van drives away. Tru stares after it, then turns to the Elkins house. George is looking at her, he shakes his head then goes inside and closes the door)

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashes of the days images as they rewind]

Cut to: Shot of Douglas College campus

33. EXT. Douglas College. DAY.
(Tru runs through the corridor, and into a computer room. The professor is alone)

PROFESSOR
Can I help you?

TRU
Yeah, I’m looking for Bridget Elkins. The registrar said she was here

PROFESSOR
She was, yes. But you just missed her. Class ended five minutes ago

TRU
Do you know where she is now?

PROFESSOR
Is Bridget in some sort of trouble?

TRU
It’s her grandmother. Nothing serious, she slipped in the tub again and Mr Elkins asked me to find her

PROFESSOR
Let me see, if it helps you, she normally meets Philip after class

TRU
Philip?

PROFESSOR
Oh yeah, they’re quite the popular couple on campus. Try the Metzler building, 212. He should be finishing up there

TRU
Thanks

Cut to: Shot of Tru running into the Metzler Building

Cut to: Tru running up to the room marked M 212

34. INT. Room 212. DAY.
(Tru opens the door, and is greeted by the sight of a daycare area, lots of children inside playing with various toys. A dark haired girl holding a cute blonde-haired baby is standing a couple of metres away)

BRIDGET
Thanks, Regina. Say bye, Philip. Bye!

TRU
Bridget?

BRIDGET
Yes?

TRU
He’s beautiful, your boy

BRIDGET
Thank you

TRU
He looks just like his father

BRIDGET
What? What do you…?

TRU
Listen, I’m a friend of Jake’s. He needs to see you, both of you

BRIDGET
What? I haven’t heard from Jake in a year and a half and…

TRU
He may not survive the day

35. EXT. Campus car park. DAY.
(Bridget settles Philip into his car seat)

BRIDGET
This is all a little bit much, okay? I haven’t heard from Jake in 18 months and suddenly you show up and…

TRU
He doesn’t even know about Philip

BRIDGET
Why does that sound like some sort of accusation?

TRU
It’s not

BRIDGET (putting the stroller into the trunk)
I found out I was pregnant the day he shipped out. Then I tried to contact him but I couldn’t, obviously, he had no interest in reaching me

TRU
You sent him a telegram. You told him not to contact you

BRIDGET
What? Telegram? I don’t know what he’s told you, but… (She starts to cry) I’m over him, I dunno why I’m getting so upset

TRU
He wants to see you before he goes into surgery; we could be at the hospital in under an hour

 (Bridget thinks about it)

Ten years ago I lost someone that I love. And not a day goes by that I don’t wish I could see her one more time. You still have that chance, Bridget

BRIDGET
I’m sorry, I can’t. I lost him once, I can’t lose him again

(She gets into the car and starts the engine)

36. INT. Military hospital. NIGHT.
(Tru opens the door to Jake’s room. He’s asleep, but stirs when she enters)

JAKE
Guardian angel or a stalker? You decide

TRU
I was in the neighbourhood. How are you feeling?

JAKE
Well, as soon as I’m stable, they’re taking me to surgery. After that, anyone’s guess

TRU
I’m so sorry, Jake

JAKE
For what?

TRU
I was supposed to help you. You wanted to see her, and I couldn’t do what you asked

JAKE
Hey, hey, hey. Don’t do that. You tried

TRU
I failed

JAKE
What? You didn’t fail. Why are you being so hard on yourself? I saw where she lives. I know she’s in school. She sounds happy. Healthy. She was more alive for me today than she has been in two years. That’s nothing to apologize for

37. INT. Elkins house. NIGHT.
(Bridget walks into the kitchen, and opens the fridge. She puts a bottle of milk into it)

BRIDGET
Thought he was never gonna go down

GEORGE
You hungry, sweetheart? There’s, um…

BRIDGET
No thanks…A crazy thing happened today. This woman came by

GEORGE
Mmm

BRIDGET
Said Jake wanted to see me

GEORGE
Really

BRIDGET
She seems convinced that I sent him some stupid break-up telegram

GEORGE
Listen, there’s a lot of odd people in the world. Nothing to take to heart

BRIDGET
Please, tell me it wasn’t you Daddy

GEORGE
Sweetheart…

BRIDGET
Tell me that you didn’t sign my name. That you didn’t send it

GEORGE
Look at me

BRIDGET
Not until you tell me that you didn’t send it! Because he’s sick. He could die

GEORGE
You had your whole future ahead of you. Princeton, Stanford. You could have gone anywhere

BRIDGET
My God…I knew it

GEORGE
You let yourself get knocked up by some soldier; you were the top of your class

BRIDGET
I loved him, Daddy!

GEORGE
And where did that get you? Running between daycare and some third rate community college! You could have been great

BRIDGET
You are my father! You’re supposed to love me no matter what I am

(She shakes her head at him, and leaves the room)

38. INT. Military Hospital. NIGHT.

JAKE
You ever wonder how one little decision can change your whole life?

TRU
All the time

JAKE
If I didn’t join the army…

TRU
You never would have been stationed here. You wouldn’t have met Bridget

JAKE
Maybe I would have met her somewhere else. I would have had a 9-5, house and kids…man, we would’ve had some cute kids

TRU
Jake, listen…

(Several seconds silence. Jake looks at her)

I’m sure you would have

 (Her cellphone rings)

Excuse me

(She walks out into the corridor to answer it)

Hello?

HARRISON (voice-over)
Hey, hey

Cut to: HARRISON sitting in a bar
Why don’t you come meet me so we can celebrate?

Cut to: TRU
I can’t make it tonight, but congratulations Harry

Cut to: HARRISON
I’m not sure how you knew but, thanks to you, she offered it to me on the spot

Cut to: TRU
That’s great, I’m so happy for you

Cut to: HARRISON
And thanks to me, I turned it down. You know, screw the guy if he can’t love me for who I am

Cut to:  (Tru turns round to see Bridget and Philip walk into Jake’s room)

HARRISON (voice-over)
Yeah, I’ll see you okay?

(Tru hangs up her cellphone and walks to Jake’s doorway)

JAKE
Bridget

BRIDGET
Hi, Jake

JAKE
You came…God, look at you. You look…beautiful

BRIDGET
Jake…there’s someone I want you to meet

JAKE
You have a son

BRIDGET
We do. Philip, say hi to your daddy

JAKE
Hey, hey…

(He strokes Philip’s hair, Philip giggles)

39. INT. Military Hospital corridor. NIGHT.
(Jake is on his trolley bed, waiting to be wheeled to surgery)

JAKE
How did we screw things up so bad?

BRIDGET
Shh. Don’t talk

JAKE
Were we too proud? Too stupid?

NURSE
Here we go, corporal

(She starts to wheel Jake down the corridor)

BRIDGET
All that matters is I’m here now

JAKE
Listen, whatever happens to me, I want you to have a good life. I want you to marry. I want Philip to have a father.

BRIDGET
He has a father

JAKE
Have a good life, Bridge. Promise me

BRIDGET
Jake, you’re gonna be fine

JAKE
Promise me, Bridge

BRIDGET (to the surgeons)
Take care of him

(Bridget looks down the corridor at Tru, who is standing by Philip’s stroller)

Cut to: Shot of the clock in the hospital; it reads 9:46pm

40. INT. Military Hospital waiting area. NIGHT.

BRIDGET
It’s taking so long

 (Tru squeezes her shoulder reassuringly)
&nbs p;
(One of the doctors enters. Tru and Bridget look up expectantly, the doctor takes off his hat.)

DOCTOR
It was a risk. We all knew that

BRIDGET
What? Oh my God…

(She starts crying, Tru hugs her)

TRU
Sorry…I’m so sorry…

41. INT. Morgue. NIGHT

TRU
I lost him

DAVIS
You didn’t lose him, Tru. His time was just up. Jake knew he wouldn’t survive the surgery, that’s why he asked you for your help

TRU
But it’s my job to prevent death. To save people. All that

DAVIS
Well maybe Jake wasn’t the one who needed saving. Maybe you saved the person you were supposed to. Bridget. You let her say goodbye because yesterday she wasn’t able to

TRU
This job’s just confusing sometimes

DAVIS
I know. That’s why you have me

Cut to: Shot of Tru’s apartment block

(“In the Arms of an Angel” by Sarah McLachlan” plays in the background)

41. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(She enters to find Luc sitting there)

LUC
Key under the mat, right?

TRU
You made it

LUC
Yeah, did you ever think I wouldn’t?

 (They hug)

TRU
No. Never

LUC
You okay?

TRU
Better now. Why don’t you relax, there’s just one thing I gotta do

LUC
Okay

42. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
 (Tru is on the telephone)

RICHARD DAVIES (voice-over)
Leave a message at the beep

TRU
Hey, Dad. It’s Tru. I know we haven’t talked in a while but, I want you to know I’m doing okay. I have a new job. I guess you could say I help people. Sometimes, if I’m lucky, they even help me. That’s why I’m calling. It’s because I know how hard it is for two people to find each other. Especially when one of them doesn’t wanna be found. So, goodnight dad…I hope you’re happy and well because, I am. And from now on, you don’t have to try and find me, because suddenly, I don’t feel lost

43. INT. Tru’s apartment. NIGHT.
(Tru walks back into the living area, and sees Luc asleep on the settee. As she walks over, he opens his eyes)

LUC
