Tu peux m'aider ?
Tru: Oui, bien sûr.
Davis: Donne moi ??
Tru: Je peux te poser une question ?
Davis: Absolument.
Tru: Tu aimes cet endroit ?
Davis: Je travaille ici depuis 8 ans...
Tru: Mais tu aimes travailler ici ?
Davis: ?
Tru: ?

Gardez: Quoi ? Des rediffusions?
Tru: Pas pour toi.

PROLOGUE

1 INT. Morgue – NIGHT

Shot of the corridor in the Morgue, moving towards the double doors at the end. Pan out to reveal Tru walking towards them, dressed in a white lab coat and carrying a clipboard, away from the Morgue room itself.

Something makes her stop. She turns around slowly. Through the set of double doors at the other end that leads to the Morgue the lights flicker. Tru stares for a moment. Then she turns and walks slowly back towards the Morgue doors. Camera pans to show the lights flicker again, then back to Tru. She reaches the doors.

Shot of Tru’s face looking through the glass window in the door frame.

She opens the doors. The light is still flickering.

Shot of one of the drawers closing by itself.

Pan across to reveal Davis standing on a stepladder changing the lightbulb.

DAVIS
Oh there you are Tru. Can you do me a favour?

TRU
Yeah, sure

DAVIS
Hand me…(he fiddles with the bulb)…the other bulb.
(Tru places the clipboard on top of the stepladder and takes the duff bulb off Davis)

TRU
Can I ask you a question?

DAVIS
Absolutely

TRU
(passing the new bulb to Davis) Do you like it here?

DAVIS
(fitting the new bulb) Been here eight years, not sure what else I’d do.

TRU
But…do you like it here?

DAVIS
(looks down at Tru) Is everything okay Tru?

TRU
(looking troubled) Doesn’t it ever get to you? Seeing all these dead people, day after day?
Davis climbs down and folds the ladder away.

DAVIS
Yeah sure I get some days where I wish I was ear, nose and throat, but most of the time its okay.

TRU
My friend Lindsey works in Public Relations

DAVIS
So do we. Our public just happens to be dead
(He gives a nervous laugh. Tru doesn’t smile, so Davis hastily straightens his face)

DAVIS
Here’s what I think Tru. We’re all some place for a reason. It’s just sometimes we need to accept what that reason is.
(He looks meanfully at Tru. She looks thoughtful.)

CUT TO:

2. EXT. Driveway outside a house. Night

A blue car is parked in the driveway. Harrison climbs out of the driver’s side, and walks up to the front door. He shoulder-barges it so it opens. Inside there is music playing loudly. He looks around, clearly agitated.

He walks into the living room. Camera pans to his jacket – he opens it, revealing a gun. He takes the gun out of the top of his trousers and holds it, aims it in front of him.

Camera zooms out to show he is walking slowly down the house’s hallway. He looks nervous. He has both hands on the gun now, eyes alert. He walks slowly, peers round into a room and enters it. It’s empty.

Harrison comes up close to the camera, and we see another man is behind him.

The man hits Harrison from behind with a poker, around his head, making him drop the gun. Harrison stumbles and turns around to face the man. The man tries to hit Harrison again but he ducks and the poker embeds itself in the wall. He grabs it out as Harrison lunges for him, and they both fall to the floor. Harrison tries to grab the poker but the man hits him with it again, knocking him away. Harrison’s head is bleeding as they scrambles to their feet. The man comes forward with the poker, but Harrison ducks, knees him in the stomach and then punches him round the face. The man rears backwards, giving Harrison time to lean down for the gun.

The man comes forward with the poker as Harrison raises the gun. The man backs off slightly. They stare at each other.

Harrison and the man are still staring at each other, holding their weapons, neither blinking.

CUT TO:

4. EXT. House. Night.
As we look at the car on the driveway, a single gunshot sounds into the night.

5. Fade to black.

6. INT. Tru’s Bedroom. DAY.
The telephone rings. Tru stirs in bed. She reaches out for the phone and knocks over a vase containing a single rose.

TRU
Damn.
(She answers the phone.)
Hello?

HARRISON
(voice-over) Hey sis – whoa, sorry…

CUT TO:

7. INT. Harrison’s bedroom. He’s also in bed.
…were ya sleepin’?

CUT TO:

8. Tru’s bedroom.

TRU
It’s okay. I had to wake up in 12 hours anyways.

CUT TO:

9. Harrison’s bedroom.

HARRISON
Hmm. I just wanted to make sure we were still on for brunch today, your place.

TRU
(voiceover) Yeah, absolutely

HARRISON
Great, see you then. (His phone bleeps) I gotta go. Batteries dying. See you Tru.

CUT TO:

10. Tru’s bedroom.
(she hangs up the phone with a small sigh and lays back down in bed.)

CUT TO:

11. Harrison’s bedroom.
(An arm snakes over him and a girl sits up next to him. She kisses him)

SARAH
Do you think she’ll like me?

HARRISON
Listen, I told you, Tru’s the best! But she has been tough on some of the girls that’s been around.

SARAH
(feigning shock) There’s been others?

HARRISON
None that matters

SARAH
Sounds like a line. The same one you used to get me in bed in the first place.

HARRISON
Serious, when I think about all the other girls that I wasted time on thinking she’s the one, but then I meet you…

SARAH
Shh. Don’t jinx it

HARRISON
Superstitious?

SARAH
Just about certain things. Parking, love…

HARRISON
Is that what we’re talking about here? Love?
(Sarah kisses him gently. He leans in for more)

SARAH
I’m gonna hit the showers. Make sure I look presentable for your over-protective sister. (she kisses him on the arm, sits up and puts a robe on. He notices a bruise on her back, just below her left shoulder blade)

HARRISON
(sitting up) Hey, what is that?

SARAH
What?

HARRISON
On your back, let me see that

SARAH
Oh its nothing, really, I slipped when I was working out

HARRISON
(disbelievingly) You slipped.

SARAH
Yeah

HARRISON
This has nothing to do with…

SARAH
No, this had nothing to do with anything. I’m just a, um, clumsy girl on a StairMaster
(Harrison clearly doesn’t believe her but he says nothing more)

12. INT. Tru’s living room. DAY.
Tru is serving coffee. Harrison and Sarah are sitting on the sofa next to each other, eating snacks.

SARAH
He tried to pick me up

HARRISON
I did not try and pick you up

SARAH
Then what would you call it?

HARRISON
It was a diner! You were alone, I was alone…I was just trying to make conversation

TRU
You tried to pick her up. (she stands, busies herself tidying the table)

SARAH
Anyway, I wouldn’t talk to him. Not some stranger who was way too cute to be good for me. But he was persistent. He got my number, called, called again. I finally agreed to meet him for lunch. That was, um, 3 weeks ago.
(Harrison plays with her hair.)

HARRISON
And the rest if history. (Kisses her)
Tru looks slightly bemused.

13. EXT. Street. DAY.
Lindsey and Tru are walking along a busy street in town.

TRU
My brother’s in love

LINDSAY
Already? I thought he just met her

TRU
He did. The boy moves fast

LINDSAY
(laughs) God I hate people in love. They always act so superior. Just ‘cause they’ve found someone who will actually put up with them

TRU
Speaking of, what’s happening with James?

LINDSAY
The third date, tonight!
(They sit down at a table outside a café)
And you know what that means?

TRU
Ah, the third date rule

LINDSAY
One of the great overlooked inventions of our time (waiter gives her a menu) Thank you

TRU
So you’re gonna sleep with him?

LINDSAY
It’s the third date, Tru, its fish or cut bait. You believe in the third date rule don’t you?

TRU
I believe in you, so if you believe in it…

LINDSAY
He’s so sweet. A little shy…

TRU
Oh my God, you like him!
(LINDSAY shrugs coyly)

14. INT. Bar. NIGHT. Tru and Harrison are sitting at the bar having a drink

TRU
I liked her

HARRISON
Sarah. Really?

TRU
Yeah, I thought she was great

HARRISON
But?

TRU
No buts! She’s a keeper Harrison

HARRISON
Yeah, that’s great Tru. I mean, we both know how you can be a little tough on some of my girls!

TRU
Well let’s be honest. I mean you’d had some winners and I’m not even talking about the Stripper years

HARRISON
No, no, no but Sarah…she’s different, Tru. I dunno…I mean when I’m with her…I’m better. You know?
(Tru nods and smiles)
(A waiter nearby drops his tray of drinks. Tru and Harrison look over, some people laugh, a couple clap and jeer)

HARRISON
Oops! (smirks and turns back to Tru) I’ll tell you, her ex-husband’s a real fool to let her get away

TRU
Wow she’s divorced huh?

HARRISON
Yeah, guys sounds like a real piece of work too. But she believes in me, Tru. I don’t even believe in myself half the time. Here’s this girl, no, this woman…who thinks I’m something special.
[A guy on a nearby table stands up]

GUY:
WOOHOO! I LOVE THIS GIRL!
(people laugh)

HARRISON
This is a weird night! But we gotta find someone for you! Because this whole ‘third wheel’ stuff? No!
(His mobile phone rings)

HARRISON
Helloo? Hey sweetie how are y…(his face turns serious) What, now?

TRU
Is everything all right?

HARRISON
Don’t worry Sarah I’ll be right there. (he hangs up) Sorry Tru I gotta go

TRU
Is she okay?

HARRISON
Don’t worry, nothing I can’t handle. I’ll call you later, I promise
(Tru looks worried, but lets him go)

15. CUT TO: EXT. City. Night

16. CUT TO: INT. LINDSAY’S apartment. NIGHT.
(She is in her dressing gown, on the telephone, eating ice-cream with a bowl and spoon)

LINDSAY
It was awful. It was awkward and fast and afterwards he wouldn’t even look at me. He just made up some excuse that he had to get up early the next morning and ran out of my apartment.

Cut to: (TRU in the Morgue Office, also on the phone)

TRU
What did you do?

CUT TO: Lindsay’s apartment

LINDSAY
What could I do? I said goodbye and ate a tub of cookie dough. So not only did I have the worst sex of my life with a guy I really like but I also gained two pounds. (licks the spoon) Okay you know what? I’m officially over the third date rule. It’s just another male invention to get us into the sack

CUT TO: Tru in the Morgue Office. (Behind her, Gardez I wheeling in a trolley with a dead body on it, covered by a sheet)

GARDEZ
Honey, I’m home

TRU
I gotta call you back

CUT TO: Lindsay’s apartment

LINDSAY
Yeah okay (she hangs up)

17. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.

GARDEZ
911 took the call at 10:30pm. The body was found in his ex-wife’s house. (he unzips the bag to reveal a man) Bullet in the chest. (he checks his pockets) Well it’s nice to know some people have got a worse relationship than I do. (hands Tru a wallet) Bag it up for me?

TRU
Yeah (takes it in gloved hands and looks at the card inside) Andrew Webb. He lives at the Harbor.

GARDEZ
Nice. Should’ve spent some of that money on a bullet-proof vest. (he leaves)
(Tru comes closer to look at the body. She turns the license over, there is a photo on the back, it is of the dead man and a girl, smiling. Tru recognises her immediately) Oh my God…Sarah.
(Tru goes back into the office and dials on her mobile phone. Gardez is also in the office, watching TV. The phone rings and goes to the answerphone)

HARRISON (on answerphone)
Hey, this is Harrison, leave me a message.

TRU
Hi, its me again. I really need to talk to you so just call me back as soon as you get this all right? (clicks phone off)

GARDEZ
You okay?

TRU
I’m fine

GARDEZ
These people are such brainiacs. The only questions I know are about Gilligan’s Island.
(Tru nods sympathetically. Her phone rings.)

TRU
Hello?

MEREDITH (voiceover)
Hey Tru, its Meredith.

TRU
Listen, I really need to reach Harrison. You haven’t heard from him by any chance?

Cut to: (Outside’s Sarah’s house. Harrison is handcuffed and being bundled into a police car. Meredith is on the sidewalk, talking on her mobile)

MEREDITH
Actually I have. He’s under arrest, Tru.

TRU (voiceover)
For what?
(Camera cuts to Harrison in the police car)

MEREDITH (voiceover)
They haven’t filed yet but my guess is Murder 1
(Camera cuts between Meredith and Tru for the rest of the scene)

TRU
What?

MEREDITH
They’re saying he killed his girlfriend’s ex.

TRU (looks towards the dead body in the Morgue)
Andrew Webb?

MEREDITH
Yeah that’s the guy, how’d you know?

TRU
His body just came in. But there’s no way, Mere! Harrison could never kill someone

MEREDITH
It doesn’t look good, Tru. His blood is in her living room, his prints are on the gun

TRU
Where is he now?

MEREDITH
They’re taking him downtown. Listen, I gotta run. I’ll call you when I know more

TRU
Mere, wait…Mere? (looks at phone, then hangs up) Gardez I’m gonna need you to cover for me okay? Just tell Davis I’ll be back as soon as I can all right?

GARDEZ
Are you okay?

TRU
I don’t know yet (she goes to the door. Stops. Turns around.)

18. INT. Morgue. NIGHT.
(Tru opens the Morgue double doors and looks inside. She walks slowly to the drawers. She opens Andrew’s, pulling it out slowly. She moves to his side, looking at him, apprehensively.)

TRU
Not that I’m not cool with the whole concept of corpses speaking to me, but if you’re gonna ask for my help, now would be the time
(Nothing happens)
(Tru puts a hand on the drawer, meaning to close it. Andrew’s head twists to face her)

ANDREW
Help me!
[Flashbacks of Tru’s day as it rewinds]

18. INT. Tru’s bedroom. DAY.
(The telephone rings. Tru stirs, reaches out for the phone and knocks the case to the floor. It smashes and she looks shocked, remembering.)

TRU
Hello?

HARRISON
Hey sis, whoa…were ya sleepin’?

TRU
Harrison, I need you to listen to me, and listen carefully.
[Fade to black]
[The day rewind flashback images replay]

19. INT. Harrison’s bedroom. DAY.
(Harrison listens, looking slightly nervous)

TRU
Okay I’m gonna tell you something

HARRISON
Can this wait till Brunch? Hey, you’re still having us for brunch, right?

TRU
Yeah, but something’s gonna happen today, something important

HARRISON
I know. You’re meeting Sarah. (laughs) Don’t be such a drama queen! (his phone bleeps) I gotta go, batteries dying

TRU
Harrison

! No, Harrison, wait!

CUT TO: EXT. Shot of street, then the City Morgue building.

CUT TO: Tru walking purposely down the corridor.

CUT TO:

20. INT. Morgue. DAY.
(Tru opens the drawer where Andrew’s body lay the previous night)
[Flashback of the moment Andrew asked for help]
(DAVIS appears behind her.)

DAVIS
You’re here early. By about 12 hours

TRU
I’m not staying

DAVIS
You know, for someone who doesn’t like it here, you’re sure around a lot. Do you ever think that maybe, you belong here?

TRU
I’ll let you know in about 12 hours (she leaves)

DAVIS
(sighs) Issues!...(closes drawer)

21. EXT. Tru walks along a busy street, talking on the phone. DAY.

TRU
It’s Harrison. He’s in trouble.

MEREDITH
Harrison

’s always in trouble. You called me out of a meeting to tell me that?

TRU
Today’s different

MEREDITH
Okay I’ll bite. How is today different?

TRU
Mere, this is gonna sound strange, but do you think Harrison could ever kill someone?

MEREDITH
What? What kind of a question is that?

TRU
Well do you?

MEREDITH
He’s our brother, Tru! I mean, I know we haven’t been that close over the years but –

TRU
Meredith, I just need you to be honest, do you think he could ever kill someone?

MEREDITH (sighs)
Yes

TRU (stops, shocked)
Well I don’t! I don’t think he could ever…

MEREDITH
What is this about Tru? Or is this one of your crazy hypotheticals?

TRU
Yeah, yeah that’s what it is. But look, I’m gonna need your help today, no questions asked.

MEREDITH
Okay fine, but next time not during meetings okay?

TRU
Okay, I’ll be in touch (hangs up)

MEREDITH
(mutters) I’ll be in touch (hangs up and throws phone on the desk)

22. INT. TRU’S apartment. She bursts in through the door, out of breath.

HARRISON
You’re late! It’s a good thing I didn’t return that spare key or I’d have to shimmy up that drainpipe again…
(Tru grabs him round the neck with both arms and hugs him tightly)

HARRISON
Hey…

TRU
I’m glad to see you Harrison

HARRISON
Yeah, you too.
(Tru continues to hug him)

HARRISON
Feel free to let go anytime!
(Tru stares at Sarah over Harrison’s shoulder, and gradually lets him go)

HARRISON
I want you to meet…

TRU
Sarah

SARAH
You must be Tru (they shake hands) I’ve heard so much about you

TRU
Mutual

SARAH
You have a lovely place, these old buildings are just great
(Tru grabs Harrison’s arm)

TRU
Harrison

can I talk to you for one sec?

HARRISON (refusing to be dragged away)
Come on Tru, you just got here. Besides, there’s nothing you can’t say in front of Sarah

TRU
Okay…um, I ran into Andrew yesterday

HARRISON
Andrew?

SARAH
My ex husband

HARRISON (looks at Sarah, then looks knowingly at Tru)
Tru, word?
(They go through double-doors filled with glass panels. Harrison closes them)

HARRISON
For the future, two topics are off-limits when meeting my new girlfriends: my exes and their exes

TRU
I need you to stay away from Sarah today

HARRISON
And you never change! Every girl I bring around you find something wrong with…so she’s divorced, what is the deal? Half the country is divorced!

TRU
It’s nothing against her; it’s you that I’m worried about

HARRISON
Well I’m a big boy, Tru. If I get my heart stopped, I get my heart stopped. You can’t protect me forever

TRU
No but I can protect you for today. Look, go to the movies, go play the horses, whatever but just stay away from her, please!

HARRISON
I don’t get you sometimes…which lately, has been most of the time

TRU
Just do this for me, just for today?

HARRISON
Why do you always have to do this the hard way huh?

TRU
Because I can

23. EXT. Harbor. DAY.
(Tru is taking pictures of a beautiful boat. As she focuses the camera on the door of the boat, a man appears in the view finder)
[flashback to Andrew’s body lying on the Morgue table. Tru realises this is the same guy]

ANDREW
Can I help you?

TRU
Oh, I didn’t realise anyone was here. Sorry

ANDREW
You’re taking pictures of my home; you’ll have to do better than that

TRU
We’re putting together a book on the Harbor, you know it’s sights, its sounds, all that

ANDREW
A book?

TRU
A book proposal actually, I wouldn’t bore you with the details but we wouldn’t use any of the pictures without your permission. Your boat is just so beautiful, sorry with the inconvenience (she turns to go)

ANDREW
It’s got an inside too
(Tru looks up again)

24. INT. Andrew’s boat. DAY.

ANDREW
So, tell me about the book. Beer? Wine? Can I get you something?

TRU
Why do I think you’re not interested in the book?

ANDREW
Why do I think you’re one of the most perceptive women I’ve met lately?
(Tru smiles, notices a picture of Andrew and Sarah on the side)

TRU
She’s pretty

ANDREW
That’s Sarah – but I’m sure we have better things to talk about than my wife. You sure you don’t want a drink?

TRU
Sorry, I’m on the clock. But uh, it’s nice to see divorce doesn’t slow you down at all

ANDREW
Sarah and I aren’t divorced, we’re separated

TRU
Sarah isn’t your ex wife?

ANDREW
No. She’s my current wife

Cut to: Shot of Downtown, and a red bus rolling through a busy street

25. EXT. Street

. DAY.

(Tru walking through the street. Her mobile rings)

TRU
Hello?

LINDSAY (sitting at the café table alone)
Where are you? I’ve been waiting like half an hour!

TRU
Lindsay I’m sorry, something’s come up

LINDSAY
I guess I’ll try not to take that personally. Okay I guess I’ll just call you tonight then

TRU
Lindsay just remember one thing, the third date rule is just another invention by men to get us into bed. Whatever you do, don’t fall for it!
(Lindsay sighs, hangs up)

26. INT. Kitchen. Day.

SARAH
You take the overprotective sister role pretty seriously I see

TRU
Why didn’t you tell Harrison you were still married?

SARAH
He said you were tough, but I didn’t think your blessing would require an interview and a background check

TRU
I’m sorry, he’s my little brother, sometimes I get carried away

SARAH
Look, just because we don’t have signed divorce papers doesn’t make it any more of a marriage

TRU
Do you know anyone who would wanna hurt your husband?

SARAH
People don’t hurt Andrew…Andrew hurts them. I married him when I was young. Too young. Maybe that’s why I thought it was my fault. That somehow I had done something wrong. That I deserved it.

TRU
Deserved what?

SARAH
Call it what you want…domestic violence, physical abuse. It all hurts just the same. I finally got the courage to leave, thought the hard part was over. Took me a year to realise the hard part had only just begun

TRU
He won’t divorce you

SARAH
No. Giving up control doesn’t really appeal to Andrew. Which is why these make sense. (she goes to the kitchen drawer and takes out a brown envelope) Found these in the Mailbox this morning. No name, but it doesn’t take a genius to work out who sent them
(Tru looks at the photographs; they are of Sarah and Harrison walking along)

SARAH
Look, should I have told Harrison sooner that I was still married? Probably. Just didn’t want to scare him off

TRU
He doesn’t scare easy you know

SARAH
I know. That’s what I love about him. Like I know that I do love him

TRU
So do I

Cut to: Shot of Tru’s apartment block, and the fire escape stairs on the outside

27. INT. Tru’s apartment. Day.
(She enters, followed by Harrison)

HARRISON
You tell me to stay away from Sarah, and you go and hassle her. You know she called me? Near tears, she thinks you hate her!

TRU
I don’t hate her Harrison, that’s not what this is about

HARRISON
Then what is it about?

TRU
You have to trust me, trust that I know what I’m doing. Or maybe I don’t. I dunno.

HARRISON
You know, you were making a lot more sense when you thought dead people were talking to you

TRU
Thanks

HARRISON
And when did you become such a hypocrite? You slept with your college professor, and you’re all over me because I’m dating a woman who’s “separated”!

TRU
You know it’s not about that

HARRISON
The reason she’s not divorced Tru, is because she’s scared to file. Damn it Tru. You know what I think? I think it’s because I’m happy. Yeah, and it kills you that your pathetic little brother’s having a better life than you. You know all this time you had me convinced that Meredith was the selfish one. And it’s been you all along

TRU
Harrison, you’re getting it all wrong

HARRISON
Am I? It seems to me for the first time, I’m getting it right (he leaves)

[Fade to black]

[Flashbacks of the day in sequence]

28. EXT. Harbor. DAY.
(Tru walks up to Andrew’s boat and steps onboard. She enters. It’s empty. She opens the cupboards, looking around. Eventually she finds a camera. She stares at it, and camera pans round to reveal Andrew coming through the door to stand behind her)

ANDREW
Let me guess…there’s no book

TRU
I’d like to ask you a few questions Mr Webb

ANDREW
Yeah well you’d better talk fast cause the police will be here shortly (he takes out his mobile and dials) You` know, I should have known! How much is Sarah paying you?

TRU
For what?

ANDREW
To dig up dirt. To force my hand in granting her divorce. You know we’ve been playing this game for months, and frankly her lack of originality is beginning to surprise me. (to phone) Yeah, hi this is Andrew Webb from the Harbor…

TRU
I don’t work for your wife, I’m here to help you

ANDREW
I have an intruder onboard (turns to Tru) Help me with what?

TRU
Live to see tomorrow?

ANDREW
(claps phone shut and walks towards Tru) Is that a threat?

TRU
No, it’s not. But if I’m gonna help you I need you to be honest with me. Why are you having Sarah followed?

ANDREW
What?

TRU
Why won’t you grant your wife a divorce Mr Webb?

ANDREW
Because she married me for my money! If I get divorced, she gets half. If I stay married, she gets what I give her

TRU
Oh, so you’re punishing her

ANDREW
She’s making me out to be the bad guy, that’s brilliant. She’s smarter than I thought. Did she tell you that I beat her?

TRU
Are you saying that you didn’t?

ANDREW
I have never hit Sarah. And I have never hit a woman. Now why don’t you just run along before I have to change my answer
(Tru stares at him for a second, then walks to the doorway, looks back and then leaves)

Cut to: flash of Andrew walking

29. EXT. Sarah’s house. DAY.
(Andrew walks to the front door and rings the bell)

ANDREW
Sarah!
(No answer. He knocks)
Sarah! Sarah!

30. INT. Sarah’s house. DAY.
(Sarah is panting and upset, Harrison is looking concerned)

HARRISON
Just tell me what happened?

SARAH
He…He came in here and he was, he was out of control.

HARRISON
Did he hit you? Did he…

SARAH
(crying) No. Not this time, but uh he threatened me. He threatened to kill me

HARRISON
What? Why?

SARAH
Because of you…because he hates you

HARRISON
He hates me? What did I do?

SARAH
You made me fall in love with you. Maybe it would just be safer for me if we weren’t together right now okay? For both of us. (off his look) Well I don’t know Harrison, you know…then I’m just giving in to him. I’m giving him exactly what he wants.  God, what can I do? He comes over here and I’m helpless to protect myself

HARRISON
Maybe you shouldn’t be helpless

SARAH
What are you saying? That I should take a self-defence class or go out and buy a gun?

HARRISON
You wouldn’t be helpless. Look at me… I know a guy

SARAH
You know a guy

HARRISON
Yeah. He could set you up, today, with a gun. Do you love me?

SARAH
You know I do

HARRISON
Then trust me. I know a guy

31. MEREDITH’S office. DAY.
(Shot of a computer screen with a wav file playing on it. Pan out to show Meredith and Tru are listening to a tape recording)
[female operator’s voiceover on telephone] 911

SARAH
(crying and upset) Yes, this is Sarah Webb…

OPERATOR
Are you okay?

SARAH
My husband just…

OPERATOR
Please speak up, m’am. Your husband just what m’am?

SARAH
Hit me, he…I’m bleeding

OPERATOR
Is he there now?

SARAH
No, he drove away…and please, if he comes back…he threatened me, he said he would kill me

OPERATOR
Where are you located?

SARAH
Oh my God, he’s here…Andrew, Andrew, stop it…please…(phone goes dead)

MEREDITH
Friend of mine in the DA’s office tracked it down from a year ago last December

TRU
He was lying

MEREDITH
What’s that?

TRU
Nothing, just thinking…out loud

MEREDITH
So Harrison knows you’re investigating his girlfriend?

TRU
It’s for his own good, Mere. You gotta trust me. So what happened when the police showed up at her house?

MEREDITH
Well, the husband was gone. Police issued a warrant for him

TRU
And?

MEREDITH
And nothing. Sarah went in the next day to make sure they dropped all the charges

TRU
Why?!

MEREDITH
Classic battered woman syndrome. I see it all the time. Now look, if you’re done with your research project I really have a tonne of work to do

TRU
Thanks Mere, I owe you

MEREDITH
Yeah you do

32. EXT. Street

. DAY.

(Harrison’s gun dealer friend has the trunk of his car open, showing them various guns in different cases.)

GUN DEALER
Now if it’s home protection you’re looking for, I would say a semi-automatic, 9mm, I sell a lot of those

SARAH
9mm, what does that mean?

HARRISON
It’s the size of the bullet; it’s kinda like, uh, a gun’s shoes

GUN DEALER
Of course there’s a good argument to be made to stepping it up a bit to a 10mm, a 45 bolt, very good choices

HARRISON
(picking up a large gun) What about this?

GUN DEALER
Sure. If your home’s being invaded by Grisly Bears (he chuckles)

HARRISON
9mm’s fine

GUN DEALER
A good choice. Does the little lady want me to wrap it up or is she gonna wear it home?

SARAH
Harrison

I can’t do this, I’m sorry I can’t do this…(she walks away)

HARRISON
Whoa, hey…we talked about this. You need it

SARAH
What does it solve? Do you think it gives me my life back? And besides, I read somewhere…what was it? That my own gun is more likely to be used against me

HARRISON
Hey, you want me to hold it?

SARAH
No, Harrison…

HARRISON
Cause I will. You need it, but you don’t want it in your house. So I’ll keep it, problem solved. And if he ever gives you a hard time, all you gotta do is call me

SARAH
I don’t know…I’ve already gotten you so mixed up in all of this

HARRISON
We’re in this together now. Wrap it up Serge

SARAH
God I hate this

33. EXT. Street

. DAY.

(On the street outside a coffee shop, Tru dials a number into her cell phone and puts it to her ear)

TRU
(on the phone) I know you don’t wanna talk to me, but I need you to listen

CUT TO: Shots of the City at Night

34. INT. Bar. NIGHT.
(Tru is sitting at the bar alone. Music plays in the background. She looks at her watch impatiently. Then she looks up as Harrison appears.)

HARRISON
So…you wanted to talk to me?

TRU
Please. Look, I’m sorry…about Sarah. For doubting her. I know her husband’s a bad guy, I know everything

HARRISON
Its cool, that’s big of you Tru, I mean that, that’s…

TRU
I’m not done. Because YOU’RE still in danger

HARRISON
Damn it Tru. Why can’t you leave well enough alone? You apologised. And now this. You know? Have a great night. (he gets up to leave)

TRU
Hey, Harrison! Wait! (she catches hold of his jacket and notices the gun in his pocket) You’re carrying a gun!

HARRISON
And don’t give me any “gun safety” lectures, okay? I know my way around a piece.

TRU
Oh my God…
[Flashback to Tru on the phone with Meredith – Tru: “Do you think Harrison could ever kill someone?” Meredith (voiceover): “Yes”]
You killed him…

HARRISON
What, what are you talking about?

TRU
You’re gonna kill him, you’re gonna kill Andrew tonight

HARRISON
What are you talking about? Why would you say that?

TRU
Because I know

HARRISON
You know what?

TRU
Every single thing that’s gonna happen today

HARRISON
What, are you psychic all of a sudden?

TRU
It’s not psychic. At least, I don’t think so. I mean, I’m not sure what the name for it is scientifically but in Laymen’s Terms…I relive days

HARRISON
You…relive…days

TRU
People ask for my help .Dead people. I know, I already told you that. But then the day restarts and I have a chance to save them from dying. It doesn’t happen every day. Not that that makes it any less strange but…How do you think I knew your cards?
[Flashback of Tru giving Harrison the 10 of Clubs card outside the Gambling Den in the previous episode. TRU: “Take this”.]
How do you think I knew who was gonna win the ball game? Even you were curious.

HARRISON
Look, Tru...I love you. You know that. But you need help! A lot of it, okay?

TRU
You see that waiter…in two seconds I bet you he drops his tray

HARRISON
What...what are you…
(He doesn’t get a chance to finish as the Waiter drops the tray of glasses he is carrying, and people laugh and jeer)

TRU
And that guy, across the room?

HARRISON
Tru…

TRU
He’s gonna stand up and profess his love for his girlfriend

MAN
I love this girl! WOO!

HARRISON
Okay what’s going on? Is this one of those reality shows where you try and freak a guy out?

TRU
Any second now your cell phone’s gonna ring. It’s gonna be Sarah, upset and in trouble. Listen to me, she’s gonna ask you to come see her, you’re gonna run out of here and you’re gonna kill her husband. You’re gonna kill her husband and be arrested for his murder tonight

HARRISON
Whoa hey, you had me with the waiter and Lover Boy okay? But this, this is a little wack, don’t you think?
(His cell phone rings. He stares at Tru, then at the phone)
Hello? (Stares at Tru)
It’s Sarah. She says she needs me

 [Fade to Black]
[Flashbacks of the day’s sequence]

35. EXT. Outside Bar. NIGHT.

TRU
Harrison, wait

HARRISON
I’m going, Tru

TRU
You can’t

HARRISON
She needs me! I love her and she needs me

TRU
You can’t save her; it’s not your responsibility, if you go there tonight, you’re gonna kill him!

HARRISON
He deserves what he gets

TRU
And then what? You end up where, in Jail for life, or worse?

HARRISON
Do you want me to be like Dad? Stand by helplessly and watch the woman I love get murdered, is that what you want?

TRU
No…don’t make her into Mom either

HARRISON
What?!

TRU
Harrison

, she’s not Mom. Don’t make this about saving Mom

HARRISON
I don’t even know what you’re talking about

TRU
Harrison

, look at me. Would you look at me? I’m 22 years old and one way or another I've lost everyone I've ever loved. Our mother to a bullet, our father to lack of interest, Meredith to coke and ambition; don't you see? I can't lose you too, otherwise I'll have no one left. I'm cursed because I can see the future. If you go there right now, I'll have no one. Without you I am all alone

HARRISON
Hey, you will never lose me Tru. But I have to go. I’ve got to go

TRU
Harr…
(he gets in the car and zooms off down the street. Tru is left standing alone. She looks around – sees a Taxi coming)

TRU
Taxi!
(The Taxi drives past. Her cell phone rings) Hello?

CUT TO: Meredith in her Office

MEREDITH
Just thought you’d like to know that Andrew Webb was cited for speeding on December 20th last year

CUT TO: TRU
Actually Mere I don’t think this is the best time

MEREDITH
In California

TRU
So?

CUT TO: MEREDITH
So that’s the same night that Sarah called 911 here. Remember, who actually saw Andrew that night? Only Sarah. Cops never found him, why?

TRU
Because he wasn’t there
[Flashback of Sarah: “He won’t divorce me”]

TRU
Oh my God…she set him up! She’s setting Harrison up!
[Flashback of Andrew: “She married me for my money”]

TRU
Mere, let me ask you a question about Divorce Law. If you divorce your husband in this state…

CUT TO: MEREDITH
You would get half, community property

Cut to :TRU
And if you kill him?

MEREDITH
You go to Jail, what’s this about Tru?

TRU
If you have someone else kill him, you get it all and the poor schmuck goes to Jail
[Short double camera shots of Tru in the street]

36. EXT. HARRISON outside Sarah’s front door. Night.

HARRISON
(he tries the door) You said it was gonna be unlocked…

CUT TO:

37. INT. UPSTAIRSAndrew and Sarah are in the bedroom. Andrew is looking at the wiring of the alarm system

ANDREW
I was surprised when you called me. I thought you couldn’t stand being around me

SARAH
Usually I can’t. Except my electrician was unavailable

ANDREW
Charming as always Sarah. Your wiring looks fine. (he glances at the stereo, where the music is turned up loud) How can you listen to this music? I can’t even hear myself think

Cut to: Harrison banging loudly on the front door, then throwing his shoulder against it

CUT TO: Upstairs, Andrew looks around

ANDREW
Could you hear that?

SARAH
No. I didn’t hear anything Andrew

Cut to: Harrison barging the door open and stepping inside
(The alarm Andrew was looking at starts bleeping and flashing)
Okay I heard that…Andrew, be careful

ANDREW
All right just call the police okay? (he leaves the room)

SARAH
Okay (she picks up the phone, waits for a second, then replaces it into its receiver)

CUT TO:

38. INT. Harrison walking down the hall, towards the camera. Music continues to blare out throughout scene.

He turns into the living area, reaches into his pocket for the gun and holds it in both hands. He continues to walk through the room and out into the hall again. Andrew appears behind him and hits him round the head with the Poker. Harrison drops the gun; both men face each other. Andrew lashes out with the poker but Harrison ducks, and the poker hits the wall, cracking it. Harrison dives into Andrew, knocking him to the ground. Harrison tries to wrestle the poker away, but Andrew hits him round the head with it again. Harrison stands, Andrew stands, and hits out with the poker. Harrison ducks, then knees Andrew in the stomach and punches him in the face. Andrew stumbles backwards and Harrison leans down to retrieve the gun. They stare at each other, weapons raised.

SARAH (running up behind Harrison)
Kill him Harrison!
(Harrison hesitates)
Kill him or he’ll kill us both!
(Harrison stares at Andrew, Andrew stares back. Harrison’s gun hand is steady, then…)

HARRISON
No. I can’t

SARAH
You’re a coward

HARRISON
I may be, but…God, I’m not a killer
(Sarah takes the gun from Harrison, points it at Andrew and fires point blank at his chest. Andrew yells and collapses to the ground)

SARAH
You are now. Your blood is in my house, your prints are on the gun, luckily I was able to wrestle it away from you (she places the gun on the side and picks up the telephone)

HARRISON
Sarah…

SARAH
Take my advice, and claim Self-Defence, although that would be hard to prove, you know – with the breaking in and all (she dials 911)

OPERATOR
911

SARAH
(feigning tears and upset)
Yes hi, I’d like to report a murder. (crying) My husband is…dead…
(Andrew sits up on the floor behind her, Sarah looks round in surprise. When she turns back, Tru is in front of her, holding the gun)

SARAH
What is going on here?!

TRU
Conspiracy to commit murder I’d say

ANDREW
I got the strangest phone call today
[Flashback of TRU: “I know you don’t wanna talk to me, but I need you to listen”. Shot of Andrew, holding the telephone on the other end of the line]
Some girl begged me to wear a bullet-proof vest (he opens his shirt to reveal it)

SARAH
Harrison

…I would have protected you…you know that right?

HARRISON
Goodbye Sarah
(Sarah stares at Tru, who is still holding the gun)

TRU
You should have taken half

39. EXT. Outside Sarah’s House. NIGHT.
(Sarah is led away in handcuffs to a police car. Harrison and Tru are standing on the sidewalk)

HARRISON
You know, I’m not sure I can buy that whole “reliving a day” thing

TRU
Can’t say I blame you

HARRISON
But, let’s say that I did…if what you said is true - Do you think yesterday I killed him?

TRU
I don’t know. Maybe. Probably

HARRISON
Hmm

TRU
Hey, how’s your head?

HARRISON
Hurts, like my pride. Course, if you can really do what you say, I’ll tell you, we could really turn a nice profit

TRU
(laughs and hugs him) We already did

CUT TO: Tru walking into a darkened City Morgue

CUT TO: Tru walking down the Morgue’s corridor, on the phone

40. (LINDSAY voiceover on the phone)

LINDSAY
So I took your advice. We came back to my apartment, James and me. And we just talked

TRU
You just talked?

CUT TO: LINDSAY in her apartment
Yeah

CUT TO: TRU
Good, Linds, I’m proud of…

CUT TO: LINDSAY
And you know what I realised? That James is one boring guy, so I just slept with him, I figured that was one way to shut him up

TRU
And?!

CUT TO: LINDSAY
And it was nice. It was very nice. We’re going for sushi tomorrow night. Good thing I didn’t take your advice, huh Tru?

CUT TO: TRU
Yeah, good thing! (snaps phone off)

DAVIS
Oh you made it, I wasn’t sure if you would

TRU
You were right Davis

DAVIS
I was? About what?

TRU
I think there is a reason I’m here. A good one

DAVIS
Yeah. I thought you might come around

41. INT. MORGUE OFFICE. NIGHT.

GARDEZ
Hey Tru

TRU
Hey yourself

GARDEZ
Slow night, not one pick-up since lunch. These guys are such brainiacs, the only questions I know are about Gilligan’s Island.
(TV: …Darwin’s First book after “the origin of species” was on these tropical flowers”?)

TRU
“What are Orchids”
(CONTESTANT: “What are Orchids”?)
(PRESENTER: “Correct”)

GARDEZ
What, re-run?

TRU
(smiles) Not for you
