Camden's House - Backyard

Eric: Arghhh! Ow!

Sam/David: Arghhh!

Erick: It's okay boys. It's just the dog. Sam! David! It's okay! Yeouch. Who let you out?

Kevin: Hey... everything okay? Guys, it's just Samson.

Sam: Good night.

David: Good night.

Kevin: Sorry. I guess the gate between our backyards was open.

Eric: Yeah, I guess it is. I think I broke my neck.

Kevin: Sometime Samson goes out in the middle of the night did you have food in here?

Eric: I can't move it any more than... this.

Kevin: Hamburger?

Eric: Maybe it's broken.

Kevin: Over there. Is that a hamburger?

Eric: What?

Kevin: Little something left over there. Were you going to eat that?

Eric: Seriously... I'm... I'm... I'm in serious pain here. You're going to eat that? I thought you wanted it for the dog.

Kevin: No. He just gets dog food. That's why he's out looking for food. How many nights you out here?

Eric: One. I promised the boys we'd have a sleep out one night while Annie is gone. But... really my neck is like... mmm.

Kevin: Didn't she just leave this morning?

Eric: Yeah.

Kevin: You'll end up back out here.

Eric: Not if my neck is broken.

Kevin: Okay. Well, guess Lucy'll be wondering where I am. 'Night.

Eric: Goodnight. And thanks for your concern. Ow!

Sam: Hi Dad.

David: We want to sleep in here.

Eric: Oh... are you sure you don't want to sleep in the house?

David: We're sure.

Sam: We like camping out. It's fun.

Sam: We forgot Happy.

Eric: Well... I'm sure he'll be fine.

Sam: Can you go get her please?

David: I don't think she wants to sleep by herself.

Eric: Oh, oh I think Happy will probably sleep much better by herself.

Sam: Please?

David: I can't sleep without Happy.

Sam: Please?

Eric: All right. Happy! Here girl! Happy! Happy? Happy?

Eric: Happy! Happy! Happy...

Sam: Happy

David: Happy!

Eric: Happy! Happy! Hey Happy! Well she'll show up. Let's go inside. Let's get some breakfast.

Sam: Call Mom.

David: She'll know where to find her.

Eric: Yeah I don't think we want to call your mother just yet.

Sam: I do.

David: I miss her.

Eric: Yeah, I miss her too. But hey, we're men. We can get along for a couple weeks without Mom.

Sam: No, we can't.

David: We already lost Happy.

Eric: All right. Let's... let's go inside and get some breakfast and I'll make some calls to some of the neighbors. I'm sure she's fine. She's fine. Come on.

Kinkirk's House - Kitchen

Kevin: It's just for a couple days.

Lucy: Maybe he can stay over at my parent's house.

Kevin: He could but... he's my brother and he wants to see Savannah.

Lucy: Oh he'll see her every day he's here.

Kevin: But he thinks he's staying here.

Lucy: You know maybe he could stay in the garage apartment, then he he'll have the whole space all to himself.

Kevin: He's single. He has a space to himself al the time. He wants to see us and be with us.

Lucy: I lover your brother. I do. You know... Ben is great. It's just not a time when I feel like having company.

Kevin: I told him if he did anything the least bit insensitive I would break his neck.

Lucy: He's Ben. I'm sure he's going to do or say something offensive. But that's okay, I love him anyway.

Kevin: Then why don't you want him over here?

Lucy: I just don't.

Kevin: Lucy it's Ben... and it's his birthday.

Lucy: It's his birthday today... or sometime this week?

Kevin: It's... today. I think it's today.

Lucy: You think? You don't know when his birthday is?

Kevin: Today or tomorrow. I always get it mixed up.

Lucy: Kevin, it's just not a good time. Ask my dad if he can stay over there. Maybe he could even help out with the twins. What is Happy doing over here?

Kevin: Oh... she followed us home late night.

Lucy: Does my Dad know?

Kevin: I don't know, I guess.

Lucy: Well Kevin... if he doesn't know he's probably going to be in a panic. Take her home.

Kevin: Okay. Come on Happy.

Lucy: Oh and ask my dad if Ben can stay over there. Please.

Kevin: All right. But what are we going to tell Ben?

Lucy: Tell Ben that we're happy that he's here. But we're just not quite ready for house guests.

Kevin: Would you tell him?

Lucy: No.

Kevin: Come on Happy.

Camden's House - Kitchen

Eric: Okay, well if you do see her... give me a call. I'll... I'll come over and get her. Thanks.

Sam: I don't want to go to school if we can't find her.

David: We can't go to school. We have to look for her.

Kevin: Hey campers.

David: Happy!

Sam: Happy!

Eric: Oh great. So now you can go get ready for school. Where'd you find her?

Kevin: She followed us home last night.

Eric: We were up all night looking for her.

Kevin: Oh. Well, she was with us.

Eric: I've had no sleep.

Kevin: Took me a while to get back to sleep too.

Eric: I didn't get back to sleep... at all. Neither did the boys. We were looking for the dog.

Kevin: She followed us back over. Say, does Annie have a Bundt pan I can borrow? It's a cake pan.

Eric: All night. We were looking for Happy all night.

Kevin: My brother Ben is coming out. I have to make him a birthday cake.

Eric: I'm tired. My wife's out of town. I'm trying to take care of two eight-year-old boys all by myself. My neck is killing me. I was up all night looking for the dog which was over at your house and you're telling me that you want to borrow a Bundt pan?

Kevin: Yeah.

Eric: Uh... today is Ben's birthday?

Kevin: It's not his birthday, but told Lucy it's his birthday because I thought that if she thought it was his birthday, she'd let him stay in the house.

Eric: So you lied?

Kevin: It could be his birthday.

Eric: But it's not.

Kevin: Speaking of which... could he stay over here?

Eric: Uh... why?

Kevin: He can't stay over at our house. Lucy's not in the mood to have company right now.

Eric: And you're just finding this out?

Kevin: He just decided to come yesterday. It's something he would do for his birthday... if it was his birthday. Whether it is or not now I've got bake a cake... and find him a place to stay.

Eric: The garage apartment.

Kevin: I hate to stick him out there. I mean he's here to see family.

Eric: Oh... like me and the boys.

Kevin: Come on Dad, have a little sympathy here. I'm between a rock and a hard place.

Eric: Did I mention my neck is killing me? Ow!

Kevin: Several times. Can he stay here?

Eric: Why not?

Kevin: You're so dramatic. Didn't you ever play sports? Tough it out, man.

Eric: Yeah.

Ben: Hey, hey, hey... nice cookware.

Kevin: Hey... Yeah. I'm baking you a cake.

Ben: Yeah? What kind of cake?

Kevin: Whatever kind of cake you want. It's your birthday.

Ben: Yeah. I heard Lucy told me. Do something not chocolate. Like a carrot cake or red velvet cake or something like that.

Kevin: Red velvet cake... what's that?

Ben: It's a red cake.

Kevin: I don't know anything about red cakes. It's going to be a cake out of a box.

Ben: Well I thought you were the big chef now.

Kevin: I don't do pastries.

Ben: It's a cake.

Kevin: Whatever. Take your pick. White... or yellow, chocolate frosting, that's what I can make.

Ben: Well okay, yellow. But don't do the chocolate. I have chocolate all the time, I want something special.

Kevin: It's not even your birthday.

Ben: When is my real birthday?

Kevin: I have no idea. I think it's around some holiday.

Ben: It's Thanksgiving.

Kevin: How can it be Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is never on the same day.

Ben: I was born on Thanksgiving so Mom always just made it on Thanksgiving, and it's still on Thanksgiving.

Kevin: So what's the actual day?

Ben: What's the actual reason you're making me a cake?

Kevin: I thought if Lucy thought it was your birthday you could stay with us.

Ben: Where?

Kevin: What do you mean, where?

Ben: Well, the only extra room you have is the room that was going to be the nursery. So I just kinda figured I'd stay in the garage apartment.

Kevin: Did you say anything about that to Lucy?

Ben: No. What do you think I am, insensitive?

Kevin: Yeah.

Ben: Hey... be nice. It's my birthday.

Ben: Hey, hey where is everyone?

Eric: Oh hey, Ben, good to see you. I... I... I didn't realize you were going to be here so soon.

Ben: Hey Rev... how's it going?

Eric: Well not so great. I seemed to have wrenched my neck. It's killing me.

Ben: Want me to crack it for you?

Eric: Oh, no, no, no.

Ben: Not really, let me crack it. Oh hey guys, come watch. I'm going to crack your dad's neck.

Eric: Oo... we... I appreciate the thought. But I'm sure it'll be fine with just a heating pad and some aspirin.

Ben: I'm trained EMT. I can do this.

Eric: So you're certified to... not break my neck?

David: Let him do it.

Sam: Go ahead.

Ben: What's it going to hurt?

Eric: Well...

Ben: All right you ready? On the count of three. One... two... three.

Eric: Arghhh!

Elementary School

Eric: Yikes! Hey watch out! Watch please... man with a broken neck!

Ms Margo: Hi. So the boys are having a hard time staying awake in class today.

Eric: I'm sorry. We camped out last night.

Ms. Margo: On a school night?

Eric: Yeah well their mom's out of town and I was just trying to make them happy.

Ms. Margo: They said you lost the dog.

Eric: Well not exactly. She followed Lucy's husband their dog home and then they neglected to tell us. So we... spent a lot of time looking for her.

Ms Margo: The boys didn't eat this morning?

Eric: No, they had breakfast.

Ms Margo: They said they didn't.

Eric: They had breakfast.

Ms Margo: What about lunch?

Eric: I made them lunch.

Ms Margo: They don't have them.

Eric: Well, I guess they... didn't bring them in. Here, here's some lunch money for them.

Ms Margo: Seems to me you're having a very hard time taking care of your two little boys while their mommy is away. Oh... what's wrong?

Eric: Oh I pulled some something. Are you implying that I can't take care of my own children?

Ms Margo: No, not at all. I'm implying that maybe you need some help with your children, if you know what I mean.

Eric: I don't know what you mean. I hope.

Ms Margo: I'm offering to help. Me... helping you. Maybe we could have dinner together. The four of us. You, me... Sam, David.

Eric: I do know what you mean. And no.

Ms. Margo: Then afterwards we could help them with their homework. Then they could go to bed and... We could...

Eric: No... Definitely not.

Ms. Margo: I'm sorry. I've never done this before. But... I find myself very attracted to you. Maybe I should come in for some professional counseling.

Eric: Yeah, I think professional counseling might be a good idea. I'll be happy to refer someone to you.

Ms. Margo: I left a lesson plan in my car. Would you care to walk me out to the parking lot?

Eric: No, thanks.

Ms Margo: Oh... that's too bad.

Kinkirk's House - Guest Room

Kevin: You sure you want to do this?

Lucy: I may not want to but... we need to. You were right. Ben needs to be here with us. We need to think about Ben. So ah... I want to move everything out, paint, and then we can move some new things in. Then if and when we decide to have a baby again, we'll do the nursery all over again... you know just the two of us... together. And until then, you know Ben could have a nice place to stay when he comes here. I really do think this is the right thing to do.

Kevin: Me too, Luce.

Lucy: And we can get this done in a day. We'll bring that bed up from the basement and then Ben can stay here. He should stay here. It's his birthday.

Kevin: Yeah.

Lucy: And if you want we can bake a cake. We can do that together while the paint dries. I just really feel like being with you today.

Kevin: Yeah. I feel like being with you today too. Do you have any idea how long Ben is going to be out with your dad?

Lucy: No, but I'd think it's going to be a while.

Elementary School

Ben: Hey ah... pretty lady. Do you ah... have the time? Okay, this isn't my car. I drive a Porsche. I'm just visiting from New York. I'm a firefighter. I have every other week off, so I can fly back and forth. I do that because I like to spend time with my family. It's very important to me. I'm hoping to have a family of my own one day if I... find the right woman.

Ms Margo: Let me see if I got all that. You are a Porsche-driving, firefighting family guy who's also a liar? It's ten-thirty.

Ben: Hey wait.

Ms Margo: You're not my type.

Ben: What's your type?

Ms. Margo: Dangerous.

Ben: Wow yeah. I can see you like danger. You're parked in a teacher's spot.

Ms. Margo: I am a teacher.

Ben: Oh then... shouldn't you be inside... teaching?

Ms. Margo: I decided to play hooky today, and I'd take you with me but... you don't look that dangerous.

Ben: I'm dangerous, I'm plenty dangerous.

Ms Margo: I left something in my car. I'm not really playing hooky, I'm going back inside.

Kinkirk's House

Ben: Hey Luce? Kev? Anyone home? I need the extra set of keys to your dad's...

Lucy/Kev: Hey!

Ben: Car.

Elementary School

Eric: What do you mean you can't do anything?

Ms. Fitzhenry: Union.

Eric: Are you telling me that... that the union will support a teacher who tries to pick up the father of two of your students?

Ms. Fitzhenry: I don't know how to say this Revered, but... I'm just not sure anyone on the school board would believe that Ms Margo was trying to... pick up the father of two of our students. Maybe you just misinterpreted something our Ms. Margo said.

Eric: I don't think so.

Ms. Fitzhenry: Sometimes men do. Ha, ha. You know how it is with men your age.

Eric: No, no I don't. How is it?

Mrs. Fitzhenry: Well sometimes they misinterpret things. A young woman being kind to them... well they think it's something else.

Eric: She was not being kind. She's attracted to me. Well I admit I'm a little older than she is... but maybe she has a thing for older men or for men in my profession. You'd be surprised how often that happens.

Ms. Fitzhenry: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. I am sorry. I don't know why this tickles me so. Look, ha, ha, maybe you're just tired. I know Annie's out of town. Go home. Get some rest. You don't want to accuse anybody of anything without proof. And Ms. Margo has been with us now... three years. And she is very well liked by her students.

Eric: Well fine, fine. I know what I saw... okay? And... I don't think I want my sons in her classroom. Could you change them over to another class?

Ms. Fitzhenry: Why don't we just get some rest? And then see how we feel about it. And when I say "why don't we get some rest"... I wasn't suggesting that you and I get some rest together. Ha, ha, ha. Oh dear, dear, dear.

Glenoak Community Hospital

Eric: Hi.

Stanley: Where's Reverend Kinkirk? You're not Reverend Kinkirk.

Eric: Are you Stanley Sunday?

Stanley: Maybe I am... maybe I'm not. Where's Reverend Kinkirk?

Eric: I'm Reverend Kinkirk's dad, Lucy's dad. Eric Camden... minister.

Stanley: She said she would come to see me.

Eric: She will come. She'll be here tomorrow.

Stanley: I might not be here tomorrow. None of us may be here tomorrow.

Eric: That's true.

Stanley: What happened to you?

Eric: I'm just yeah... I'm having a bit of a bad day. I had a little run in with my sons' teacher and principal, and I'm still kind of angry with the way I handled it when I found out that Lucy's husband's brother locked me out of my car. I had to wait for him to come and unlock it. I have this terrible pain in my neck. I'm just having a bad day.

Stanley: You got a home?

Eric: A home... yes.

Stanley: You have drug addictions, alcohol problems?

Eric: I don't.

Stanley: You have a wife, children, family who loves you?

Eric: I get your point.

Stanley: You're not having a bad day.

Eric: Not from where you're lying... I'm definitely not.

Stanley: That's a nice jacket you're wearing.

Eric: Oh yeah. My wife picked it up for me at this little second hand shop that she... that she set up and put in a new lining and...

Stanley: Give it to me.

Eric: I beg your pardon?

Stanley: The jacket. I like it, give it to me.

Eric: Yeah. Well if you need a new jacket I can... I can arrange for you to get one. Maybe even from the same store. I'll ask Annie...

Stanley: Arrange for me to get that one. It would look good on me.

Eric: Well yeah well I'm sure it would. But I rather like it myself. So ah... Lucy tells me that... she met you when you stepped out in front of her car as she was pulling out of the Promenade parking lot.

Stanley: She probably would have seen me if I had that jacket. Now... I'd put a pack of menthol cigarettes right in the pocket. Go get me a pack of menthol cigarettes. Any green package, I don't care.

Eric: Aren't you in for some heart problems? Cigarettes and heart problems don't usually mix, just from what I've heard. You know I have a few heart problems of my own. I had open heart surgery a few years ago.

Stanley: So you smoke?

Eric: No.

Stanley: And yet basically we're in the same boat. But mine is sinking. You're here for me, right?

Eric: I am.

Stanley: So... then get me some whiskey. Cheap whiskey and a pack of menthol cigarettes. And... that jacket. Then I'll be a happy man.

Eric: You think that would do it, Stanley?

Stanley: Yeah.

Eric: You think maybe that might make you feel better for a few minutes, but maybe we should talk about making some life changes that could give you some real happiness.

Stanley: Thank you. But there is no real happiness. I'll take the few minutes, the jacket menthols and alcohol.

Eric: Can't do it.

Stanley: Why not?

Eric: 'Cause Stanley I... I want you to live.

Stanley: And I want you to live. I want you to live like there's no tomorrow. Just like me.

Eric: But there is a tomorrow.

Stanley: Not always.

Eric: Are you worried about those tests?

Stanley: No.

Eric: I always get nervous about those tests.

Stanley: That's 'cause you think there's a tomorrow. And you think those tests are going to ruin it for you today. It's all about today. Give me the jacket!!!

Dr. Tsegaye: Stanley Sunday, so sorry to keep you waiting. But it looks like you've been keeping good company. Reverend Camden... how are you?

Eric: Oh, I'm fine thanks. I didn't expect to see you here.

Dr. Teague: Oh I like to volunteer a little time to the community. And Stanley here is an old friend ... of sorts. You say you're feeling okay?

Eric: Yeah, thanks.

Stanley: He's been complaining about a pain in the neck... and having a bad day. Ha, ha, ha. He thinks he's having a bad day.

Eric: Well I camped out in the back yard last night with the boys, I'm a little tired. I think I pulled something but I'm fine. 'Lot to be thankful for as Stanley pointed out.

Dr. Teague: When was the last time you checked in with Dr. Dunne?

Eric: Not recently. It's been a while. I've been meaning to call him.

Dr. Teague: Why don't you come down the hall with Stanley and we'll take a look at the old ticker?

Kinkirk's House - Guest Room

Kevin: Hey.

Lucy: Oh... you found it!

Kevin: Red velvet cake mix.

Lucy: Aw... Ben is going to be so happy.

Kevin: I don't know why you're so worried about making Ben so happy.

Lucy: Because he's your brother. Which means he's my brother and it's his birthday. And birthday's are important. I hope he likes his room.

Kevin: Let's not start calling it his room. He's here a couple days and then he has to go home.

Lucy: He is welcome here anytime.

Kevin: Any time after he learns how to knock.

Lucy: Would you just quit that? It's his birthday. And it wasn't entirely his fault. We were partly to blame.

Kevin: For doing whatever we want in our own home?

Lucy: Yeah.

Kevin: Where is Ben anyway?

Lucy: He's taking care of Savannah so I can get things ready for his birthday party.

Kevin: Look... I have to tell you something. You really are pretty, you know that?

Lucy: Thanks. Oh... was there something else?

Kevin: I really love the smell of your hair. It's really nice.

Lucy: Thank you. Are... are you sue that's what you wanted to tell me? That I'm pretty and my hair smells nice? Sometimes you say things like that when you're trying to say something else.

Kevin: Yeah, I am. I love you.

Lucy: I love you, too. It's been a really nice day.

Kevin: Yeah.

Lucy: Even if it's not Ben's birthday. I don't know I just got a feeling.

Kevin: I lied.

Lucy: I know.

Kevin: Why didn't you say anything?

Lucy: I didn't want to till we finished up the room. Sometimes it's easier to do things for other people than to do it for ourselves. And I don't think that I could have started this thing if I wanted to do it for me. I don't know why... I just couldn't. When is Ben's birthday anyway?

Kevin: Thanksgiving.

Glenoak Community Hospital - Room

Eric: Everything okay with Stanley?

Dr. Teague: Stanley? Except for heartburn, he's fine. He checks himself in every now and then to get a little rest. He does the tests for the hospital staff. And ex-con, ex-drug addict, ex-bill collector. He smokes, drinks, he stinks. He eats out of trash cans. He's mean, selfish and annoying. He even tried to sue me of malpractice once so he'd have some money to live on. No, Stanley has got low cholesterol, blood pressure 120/ 80 and I can't find a thing wrong with him. Not that I want to.

Dr. Teague: I never want to find anything wrong with anyone. Reverend... I'm going to recommend that you make an appointment with your own doctor. I'm going to have him go over the results of your EKG with you.

Eric: But... you're the cardiac guru. If something is wrong, my doctor is just going to refer me to you. So... why don't you go over the EKG results with me? Today, this afternoon... or I might think that something is wrong. Oh... please don't tell me I need heart surgery again.

Dr. Teague: No, unfortunately not, Reverend.

Eric: Hello?

Lucy: Hey Dad, did you want me to pick up Sam and David? The school called?

Eric: Yeah, would you?

Elementary School

Ms Margo: Hi.

Eric: Hi.

Ms Margo: If you're looking for Sam and David they're...

Eric: No, no. I'm looking for you.

Ms Margo: Would you excuse me just a second?

Eric: No, no I think I'd rather say what I have to say in front of everyone so... everyone! Everybody! I just... I just want you all to know that... ah... I'm taking my sons out of this school today. And I'm taking them out because I don't think their teacher Ms. Margo should be teaching them.

Eric: Ms Margo propositioned me this morning. Ah... well actually, you know she offered to come over to our house and have dinner and help me take care of my children while my wife, Annie is out of town. And then... Ms Margo insinuated that we should be intimate with each other. Now the fact is... she didn't just insinuate she... she offered. And I find that ... just for so many reasons... not acceptable. Not just you know, as a minister but you know as a parent and as a tax paying citizen. Yes I pay taxes that pay for teachers and other public servants. And... you know I'm tired of... having people who, you know, actually work for me acting as if... their lack of morality doesn't affect anybody else.

Eric: Your lack of morals Ms. Margo affects everyone else. Look at you. Look at all of you. You work hard you know you do a good job. You put up with ridiculous parents who don't teach their children right from wrong and in turn those children are so horrible in the classroom that teaching becomes a burden instead of a joy. And all the while you hang in there and you do the best you can. And gosh, you barely scrape by financially. And you do without because you're dedicated to teaching. And then somebody like Ms. Margo comes along, or worse, a teacher comes along who doesn't just flit with a parent, no, no. they flirt with a student or... they seduce a student. A student. You know the very person they're supposed to be teaching. They're teaching what? That nothing matters? And you know of all the focus it's taken away from the sacrifices the good teachers make and all anybody hears about are the lousy teachers who are criminals. So I'm not waiting around for the situation with Ms. Margo to get worse. It's not okay for my sons to be educated by woman who has problems. I think they're serious problems. You shouldn't be teaching. You shouldn't be teaching. You're not good enough to be in this group. You're certainly not good enough to be Sam's and David's teacher. They're my children. And like most parents I care... about my children.

Eric: Maybe you think I'm just a... crazy old man. But you know what? I don't' care. I don't' care about anything. So... goodbye, Ms. Margo. Goodbye Ms. Fitzhenry.

Eric: I'm outta here; I'm out of this wacky world of eructation where the lousy immoral teachers are protected at the expense of all the other teachers. I'm not waiting days or weeks or months to find the right teacher for my sons. Life is short. And education is important. And to the rest of you... ah... God... thank you, thank you for everything you do for the students in your classrooms... every day.

Ms Fitzhenry: Wow! I see what you see in him. But you and I... we need to talk.

Kinkirk's House

Lucy: Hi, are you okay? What happened?

Eric: Oh, nothing. You know after the hospital I just had some things I had to take care of. I'm sorry I missed Ben's birthday dinner.

Lucy: As it turned out, it was a not-Ben's birthday dinner.

Eric: Okay.

Lucy: But Kevin probably already told you that.

Eric: Not if he wasn't supposed to.

Lucy: It's okay, Dad. I've had such a beautiful day. I don't think anyone could upset me. Dad... is something wrong? Is it Stanley? Oh no Stanley's not seriously ill or anything, is he?

Eric: No. he's fine. Stanley's just... fine.

Lucy: And you? Are you fine?

Eric: I'm starving.

Lucy: Oh! Well... we cooked some burgers on the grill again. I know you did that last night, but you know how Sam and David like routine when Mom's gone.

Eric: Yes, they do. So hot dogs and hamburgers it is.

Lucy: Hey, we take better care of you than that. Kevin made you some turkey burgers.

Eric: Thanks, Luce. I appreciate you and Kevin looking after me. I think I'll have a hamburger just the same. And maybe a hot dog or two. And... Did you make French fries?

Lucy: No. Kevin did. But... they're slightly cold and slightly greasy.

Eric: Bring 'em on.

Lucy: Oh we made salad if you'd rather have salad.

Eric: You know I've had all the salad I want to eat... for the rest of my life.

Lucy: Dad, did something upset you cause... you seem a little... angry.

Eric: Huh... yes and several things upset me today. But you know what? Instead of keeping that upset inside I just... I just let it out. You can't always... you can't always keep from upsetting other people. And you just can't always be nice... especially when your health is at stake. So, I'm fine. I'm just hungry.

David: Dad!

Sam: Hi Dad! You're home!!

David: We were worried about you.

Eric: Hi, guys. Hey, hey you know what I was thinking? I was thinking that maybe we should camp out again tonight.

Both: Yay!

David: We'll get the sleeping bags!

Sam: And Happy's leash.

Eric: Okay.

Lucy: Dad... tonight you're going to go camping outdoors with the boys tonight?

Eric: I am. Routine, remember? That's what they like. And I like them a lot. I love them. So... I'm camping out.

Lucy: Okay. But what about your neck? And the fact that you haven't gotten any sleep last night and you've been running around like crazy today.

Eric: Don't worry about it.

Lucy: Something happened with Stanley, didn't it?

Eric: Kind of.

Lucy: Where's your jacket?

Eric: Yeah. A guy... a guy deserves to have a little happiness in his life, don't' you think? Even Stanley.

Lucy: Sure, sure Dad.

Eric: Did you make everybody wait for me?

Lucy: Of course I did.

Eric: You know what? I'm going to start with the cake.

Lucy: Okay. Start with the cake if that's what you want.

Eric: That's what I want. And ah... put some candles on it. You have some candles? If you don't... I'm sure we have some over to our house.

Lucy: I have candles. And I was going to put the candles on the cake, but it's not really Ben's birthday.

Eric: Yeah, but it'll be fun. And besides, someone's birthday somewhere right?

Lucy: Right.

Eric: Besides birthdays are just a reminder that we can take a day... and start life all over again. Every day, we ought to get up and act as if it's our birthday. As if it's the start of something new. A new chance to live life... the way we should live life.

Lucy: Okay.

Street

Stanley: Thank you Reverend Camden. Thank you for your big, big heart.

Kinkirk's House - Kitchen

Ben: Come on Dad, let me try cracking your neck again. If it doesn't work this time I promise I won't ask again.

Kevin: You never should have asked the first time.

David: Let him try Dad.

Lucy: Ben, don't you think that Dad's neck will straighten out on its own. Maybe we should just have some cake... and call it a night.

Eric: We could do that. But... I don't want to do that. Life is too short to live with a pain in my neck. Go on Ben. Yeah, my neck is in your hands.

Sam: Go for it.

David: Do it!

Ben: All right now, you got to relax. Sit down and relax. That was the problem the last time. You weren't relaxed.

Kevin: Yeah, that was the problem.

Ben: Okay. Count of three. One... two... three!

Eric: Ha, ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ah... thank you. So... ah...

Eric: Happy Birthday to everyone,

All: Happy Birthday to everyone. Happy Birthday. Happy birthday... Happy Birthday to everyone.

Kinkirk's House

Lucy: Nice day.

Kevin: Very nice day.

Lucy: It's a nice life being with you. No matter what happens.

Kevin: I feel the same way.

Lucy: My dad is completely lost without my mom. Isn't he?

Kevin: Is that it?

Lucy: You noticed too?

Kevin: Noticed? One minute he's sad, the next minute he's happy. The next minute he was something else.

Lucy: Yeah. He was kind of all over the place.

Kevin: And he put all that food on his plate then he didn't eat anything.

Lucy: I know. But he took a piece of cake home with him.

Kevin: You're sure it's just that your mom is out of town? I don't remember him being like this when she was out of town the last time.

Lucy: Yeah. And you know what else is odd? You know that jacket that he loves? He gave it to that crazy street man, Stanley.

Kevin: Well, that's not too unusual is it? Your dad would give someone the shirt off his back if he thought they needed it.

Lucy: I don't know. I think something happened down at the hospital. And I'm going to look up ol' Stanley tomorrow and see what I can get out of him.

Kevin: I'll go with you.

Lucy: No, I can go by myself. And I'm not going to the movies. I have work I have to do and it's about time I got back to it.

Kevin: If that's what you want.

Lucy: That's what I want.

Camden's House - Backyard

Ben: I got it!

Eric: Oh... I... I disconnected the hose. Some things you see coming... and some you don't.

Ben: Still a fire's a fire. You shouldn't have a fire in a tent.

Eric: I shouldn't have a lot of things.

Ben: What does that mean?

Eric: It just means... ah... I'd like to be alone with my thoughts if you don't' mind. Ha, ha, ha, ha.
