#911 : Mauvaise humeur

Camden's House - Kevin and Lucy's Room

Lucy: Kevin...

Kevin: Yes...

Lucy: I just wanted to check and see if you're awake.

Kevin: I'm awake. You still can't sleep?

Lucy: No...

Kevin: Maybe if you just closed your eyes.

Lucy: I'm not tried. I've been in bed all day, all week.

Kevin: But if you just close...

Lucy: I not sure that you understand what it's like being on bed rest.

Kevin: No, but I...

Lucy: I am only allowed to be on my feet for five minutes a day. I can't walk around, I can't cook, I can't clean, I can't do any of my church work or any work. So, I have to depend on other everybody else for everything. Which means that until I have this baby, my entire life is on hold. I can't even take a shower every day, so on top everything else, my hair looks terrible and I smell.

Kevin: You don't smell.

Lucy: Liar... what about my hair?

Kevin: You've never looked more beautiful.

Lucy: Oh, right!

Kevin: (nods)

Lucy: Oh, don't do that.

Kevin: Do what?

Lucy: Nod, like you understand. You don't understand, you'll never understand, because men can't have babies. Which means that if we have any more children, I might end up like this, on bed rest again, and again, and again... and where would you be while I'm having all the children that you want? Where will you be while I'm slowly going insane? Oh yeah, you'll be at work, having fun, chasing criminals, doing crime-fighting stuff, and why is that.

Kevin: Because men can't have babies...?

Lucy: Exactly, so please, please do not nod at me like you understand. You do not understand.

Kevin: (half nods)

Lucy: (sighs)

Camden's House - Eric and Annie's Room

Lucy: Why aren't you say anything?

Kevin: I don't what to say?

Lucy: What is that supposed to mean?

Eric: (big sigh)

Kevin: It means, I don't what to say to you that won't make you angry.

Lucy: Oh, so what does that mean, I'm just irrational woman that you married and have to put up with?

Kevin: Honey, I love you.

Lucy: You love me... but you agree that I'm an irrational...

Kevin: I didn't say that.

Annie: Ruthie, is something wrong?

Eric: Are you okay?

Ruthie: Well, I'm doing better than Kevin.

Eric: You can hear them all the way upstairs?

Ruthie: Yes, I can hear them. The neighbors can hear them. I think the man in the moon can hear them. I know this bed rest thing is what Lucy has to do for the baby, but what about the rest of us? Don't we count? Can't we send her to a hotel or a camp for other angry, pregnant women on baby rest?

Eric: It's not gonna last for ever.

Ruthie: True, we only got like another month or two of this fun... and then we get to enjoy the screams of a crying baby. Boy, I can hardly wait. You know, if this were Survivor, we would have voted Lucy off the island days ago.

Annie: We can't vote her off, we just have to...

Ruthie: Never mind...

Camden's House - Upstairs Hallway

Sam: Why is Lucy yelling at Kevin again?

Ruthie: Someday when you guys grow up, you're goin' to fall in love and get married and have babies, then your wives will yell at you. Then maybe you'll understand why Lucy is yelling at Kevin. Why don't you try putting the pillow over your head, that works sometimes.

Camden's House - Martin's Room

Martin: Try knocking...

Ruthie: Hey, we're all on the edge because of Lucy, but that's no excuse to act like...

Door: (slams)

Camden's House - Upstairs Hallway

Eric: Now what's going on?

Ruthie: I think Martin and Lucy should be roommates... because they have a lot in common. Dad, seriously, I can't take this anymore, I have finals and papers and school and... I just some need sleep. We all need some sleep.

Annie: I love Lucy, but I am tried.

Sam: Ruthie, the pillow isn't working.

David: We can still hear her.

Happy: (barks)

Eric: Okay, okay... follow me. If you wanna sleep... follow me.

Camden's House - Garage Apartment

Kevin: Hey...

Eric: Mmm...

Kevin: Hello...

Eric: Mmm... Oh no... oh, hey, hey! Everybody up, up, we all overslept.

Annie: Oh, no... come on, oh, come on you guys, you guys, you're gonna be late. Come on, let's go, come on, come on, go, go, go...

Kevin: Lucy... she'll get used to being on bed rest and settle down. Who am I kidding? She's never going to get used to being on bed rest, and everyone's exhausted, and I feel like a failure.

Eric: Now, Kevin...

Kevin: She's my wife and nothing I do makes her feel better. All she does is tell me how I don't understand how she feels or what she's going through.

Eric: Look, I don't think Lucy's ever going to get used to this, but she'll survive it, we all will.

Kevin: Nice speech, but unlike the rest of the family, I can't hide up here where it's all nice and quiet. I'm stuck on the front lines with an angry, pregnant woman.

Eric: Did I mention this won't last forever?

Kevin: Right now, a week feels like forever.

Eric: Hang in there.

Kevin: Do I have a choice?

Eric: No, but someday soon you'll have a baby.

Camden's House - Kitchen

Lucy on Monitor: Mom, my breakfast tray is ready and I need my hairbrush. And I need my blue t-shirt, the peacock blue one, not the light blue one, okay?

Annie: Oh, I, I put the baby monitor on now, because I, I want to be able to hear if she needs me.

Eric: Hearing Lucy isn't exactly a problem these days.

Annie: You don't understand how hard it is for her. I don't even understand and I've been pregnant. I didn't have to go on bed rest. It's really hard that final trimester with out the added burden of not being allowed to move... I mean, that would make anyone crazy.

Lucy on Monitor: Hello, Mom... are you there?

Annie: Lucy, I'll get that t-shirt for you. You just sit tight.

Lucy on Monitor: What else am I supposed to do?

Eric: She's so, so grateful.

Annie: She's frustrated...

Lucy on Monitor: I'm waiting...

Eric: Impatient...

Ruthie: Can you give me a ride to school.

Eric: I, I have to take the boys to school so your mom can stay here with Lucy, and I still haven't changed or cleaned up. I, I don't think I have time. Sorry...

Eric: Lucy...

Ruthie: She's gonna kill to kill us all, you know that, don't you?

Eric: Where's Martin? Why aren't you going to school with him?

Ruthie: I don't know if you've noticed, what with Lucy going insane and all, but lately Martin has been in a permanent bad mood, so if you can't take me, I think I'd rather take the bus and be abused by strangers.

Martin: Where's Ruthie?

Lucy on Monitor: Mom...? I need my Oprah magazine. Mom, mom...? Is this on?

Martin: Is that Lucy?

Eric: I'm sorry if she's keeping you up at night.

Martin: I'm fine. I don't want to be late for school, where's Ruthie?

Eric: She took the bus.

Martin: All right, see ya'.

Eric: Martin...

Martin: Don't worry, I ate breakfast.

Eric: Good, but is there something else going on? Lately I... you've just been a little distant... and Ruthie mentioned this morning that she was taking the bus because she didn't want to drive in with you.

Martin: If Ruthie doesn't want to drive with me, then it's Ruthie's problem not mine. So you should take to her, not me. Look, I'm fine. I'm just, I'm just tired, like everyone else.

Eric: (sighs)

Lucy on Monitor: Mom... this is last month's Oprah.

David: Sam is wearing my pants.

Sam: David's wearing my shorts.

David: We're too tired to change.

Sam: We're too tired to go to school.

Eric: No... you, you have to go to school, but you don't have to change.

Annie: She wants to talk to you.

Eric: Tell her I already left.

Sam: Huh, but Daddy, that's a lie.

Annie: Yes, Daddy, that's a lie.

Lucy on Monitor: I know you're there, Dad, Dad? Just because I can't move, I won't be ignored. Dad, don't make me use my five minutes of walking time chasing you down. Dad...?

Eric: I'm on my way, Luce.

Camden's House - Kevin and Lucy's Room

Door: (knock)

Lucy: You look awful.

Eric: Thanks...

Lucy: You sick or something?

Eric: Just haven't been sleeping so well.

Lucy: Yeah, me too. I wrote down a list of books and articles for the girls in my teen empowerment class to read.

Eric: Maybe we should keep postponing your class until you can be there on person.

Lucy: I've had to put my life on hold. I had to give up things I wanted to do because of this pregnancy. I'm not going to make the girls in my class suffer just because I have to. Everyone is expecting me to be there today, but since I can't be there, I, I need you hand these out but no talking, no advice, no words of wisdom; this is my class, my girls. I just need you to post this list down at the church.

Eric: Are you okay?

Lucy: I almost lost my baby and now I'm a prisoner in my own home... wait, not my home, your home. How okay should I be?

Eric: I should go.

Lucy: Yeah, you should.

Police Station

Capt. Michaels: Kevin... Kinkirk!

Guys: (laughing)

Capt. Michaels: We need to talk. I'm sending you home.

Kevin: You're firing me?

Capt. Michaels: No, I want you to go home and take care of Lucy.

Kevin: She doesn't want me to take care of her.

Capt Michaels: Look, I can't have you falling asleep on the job. It's not the first time this week. Take a couple of days off.

Kevin: Don't send me home. Nothing I do makes Lucy happy. She just yells at me, when she's not yelling at everyone else. I can't even imagine what she's going to do to me if I'm available all day and all night. Let me stay, I promise I won't fall asleep. Please, I'll be good.

Capt Michaels: Get a hold of yourself, Kinkirk... and be a man. It's just a couple of days.

High School - Hallway

Martin: Why did you take the bus this morning? And why are you avoiding me?

Ruthie: You don't want to know.

Martin: Yeah, I do.

Ruthie: You've been a jerk lately. I told you didn't want to know.

Martin: That's kind of mean, don't you think?

Ruthie: No, that's kind of honest.

Martin: Give me a break, will ya'? I'm tired.

Ruthie: Being tired is not an excuse. You're not special. If the rest of us can manage to be pleasant, why can't you?

Martin: News flash, the rest of you aren't all that pleasant.

Ruthie: See, this conversation is exactly why I'll be taking the bus home today.

Martin: Fine... like I care. Take the bus.

Ruthie: No, not fine. Fine would be getting a ride home and truly, I can't take your attitude anymore.

Martin: Yeah, well, you're... not that much fun to be around either.

Mac: Whoa, since when did you start hanging out at the bottom of the grading curve? Okay, what's wrong... besides the grade?

Martin: Ruthie called me a jerk.

Mac: Oh... what...?

Martin: You're my friend, you're supposed to tell me that Ruthie is a jerk for calling me a jerk, and that I'm not a jerk.

Mac: If you want me to lie... I'll lie.

Martin: You think I'm a jerk?

Mac: Lately, you've been a bit tense.

Martin: Tense...?

Mac: Yeah, that's French for jerk. Hey, but I didn't know you were having trouble in school.

Martin: I'm not having trouble.

Mac: You're getting "D's" on papers, what's your definition of trouble, getting "F's"?

Martin: And I'm not tense.

Mac: At the last hone game, you got into a fight with the mascot... the mascot. That's tense, my friend, that's not tired.

Martin: I didn't get into a fight.

Mac: You were standing in the middle of the field yelling at some poor guy wearing a cat costume to "bring it". That's not one of your finest moments.

Martin: I told you I'm just tired. Lucy is driving everyone crazy.

Mac: Something's driving you crazy, and I wish that I knew what it was, because I may not know a lot, but I do know your current mood has nothing to do with Lucy.

Camden's House - Kevin and Lucy's Room

Kevin: Lucy! What are you doing?

Lucy: I was cold. I wanted another blanket. What are you doing home?

Kevin: You can't be walking around; you know what the doctor said. Your mother is just downstairs, if you need a blanket, she'll get you one.

Lucy: Well, I wanted to get my own blanket.

Kevin: How long have you been up? 'Cause whatever time you got up gets deducted from your five-minute daily total, I think that means no shower today... you didn't already shower, did you?

Lucy: Enough... stop... stop, right there. Stop talking to me like I'm a baby. I'm a grown woman, actually, an overgrown woman, a pregnant woman, and I don't need you counting the minutes I'm up everyday, I can do that myself.

Kevin: But you don't want anything to happen to the baby.

Lucy: I am painfully aware of how fragile my condition is right now and it doesn't help to be reminded night and day, by you and by the rest of my well-meaning but extremely annoying family. And again, I ask, why are you home?

Kevin: Captain Michaels wants me to take a couple of days off. I feel asleep at work.

Lucy: If you're not at work, you can't be here. This bedroom is not big enough for the both of us. So go find a place to hang out during the day and stay out of my way.

Kevin: There has to be something I can do... please, I wanna help.

Lucy: My mom is taking care of food and magazine, and other than that, there isn't anything you or anyone else can do. I'm just stuck like this until I deliver, and I hate it. What...?

Kevin: I talked to your mom on the way up here, and she said your advisor from school called today.

Lucy: So...?

Kevin: So she thought there might be a problem.

Lucy: She's wrong... everything's fine.

Camden's House - Kitchen

Kevin: (sighs)

Kevin: I don't want any more kids.

Annie: What about Lucy and school... her advisor?

Kevin: She says everything's fine.

Annie: Maybe Eric knows something?

Kevin: No offense, but I'm her husband, if I don't know what's goin' on, why would he... don't listen to me.

Annie: Okay, I won't.

Phone: (rings)

Annie: He's not there.

Kevin: Maybe he ran away. Oh wait... it's me who wants to run away.

Annie: He should be there.

Kevin: I don't think he know anything. And again, I don't think there's anything to know.

Annie: I'll page him. Oh, I'll have to page him later, I've got to pick Sam and David up from an after school play date. Do you mind keeping an eye on things around here for me?

Kevin: I'll change and be right back.

Annie: Oh, wait, wait... so you can here Lucy better.

Kevin: I hear Lucy in my nightmares... I mean dreams.

Annie: Where's Martin?

Ruthie: I don't know I took the bus home.

Annie: Oh, he's probably at practice.

Ruthie: Maybe he'll stay at practice... forever. Oh come on, he had been a real pain lately, to everyone, not just me.

Annie: He's just tired, we're all tired. And remember that this situation isn't going to last forever, Lucy needs us.

Ruthie: I'm gonna go take a nap.

Annie: Hey, help me put the laundry away first, will ya'? It's all folded... just needs to be delivered to everyone's room.

Ruthie: Sure, I'll do it, who needs sleep, right?

High School - Baseball Field

Players: (yelling)

Martin: Why to go, Kit. I've got it.

Nick: I got it.

Martin: I've got it.

Nick: I got it. Brewer, stay out of my way.

Martin: Hey, I had it... you were in my way.

Nick: I called it. You just stick to your position and I'll stick to mine.

Martin: I would if I didn't need to cover your butt.

Nick: What'd you say?

Martin: Hey, don't get angry just because you need my help.

Nick: I don't need your help. You're the one who needs help.

Mac: Why can't we all just get along?

Nick: Shut up.

Terry: Okay, what's the problem here?

Nick: As usual, Martin thinks he's playing every position.

Martin: Yeah, right.

Nick: I called the play. It was mine. If you hadn't gotten in my way, I would have caught the ball.

Terry: Okay, everybody back to positions. Baxter, you're in! Shortstop!

Martin: I'm shortstop.

Terry: Not today, you aren't... and not tomorrow if you don't change your attitude. Hit the showers.

Martin: What attitude?

Terry: Look, I don't what's going on with you, but I can't have that kind of attitude on my team, it's disruptive.

Martin: I'm your best player. What are you gonna do, bench me?

Terry: I can not only bench you, I can kick you off my team. So if you need help...

Martin: I don't need help. I don't need you and I don't need this team.

Mac: Martin, man, what are you doing? You...

Terry: Stick around, Martin. We'll be talkin' after practice. Okay, everybody show's over. Get back to your positions. Let's go! Play ball!

Camden's House - Garage Apartment

Phone: (rings)

Kevin on Phone: Hello...? Hello? Hello... yes, this is Kevin Kinkirk. Yes, I'm Lucy's husband.

Camden's House - Upstairs Hallway

Ruthie: I was just puttin' laundry away.

Kevin: Okay...

Camden's House - Kevin and Lucy's Room

Kevin: Your advisor from school just called me. He says if you don't get your last term paper turned in by the end of next week, you won't graduate. He said, when he called you earlier, told you this, you told him that you don't care if your graduated. Why didn't you tell him you're on bed rest.

Lucy: It's non of his business.

Kevin: Lucy, if he understood what's going on, maybe you could work something out, get some more time.

Lucy: It's not important.

Kevin: Not important to graduate after all the hard work you've done?

Lucy: I can't get the paper done while I'm in bed, so forget about it. I'll just... take the incomplete, finish next semester and graduate in June.

Kevin: But I know you were counting on graduating in December, you wanted your diploma before the baby comes.

Lucy: Well, I'm not gonna get what I want, am I?

High School - Locker Room

Martin: So, I'm the problem, right.

Terry: You leave me no choice. Effectively immediately you're off the team.

Martin: Fine, good luck without me, you're gonna need it.

Mac: What happened?

Martin: I'm off the team... temporary suspension, which will be permanent if my attitude doesn't change.

Mac: No...

Martin: Yeah, and I don't want to talk about it, okay?

Nick: You need to get it together for the good of the team. We need you out there.

Martin: Yeah, you need me out there, because you can't cover your position.

Nick: What'd you say?

Martin: You heard me. It's not me that needs to get it together, it's you.

Nick: You don't want to go down this road.

Martin: What, what road would that be, the truthful road? Because you know I'm right. Look, back off.

Mac: Hey, Martin... Nick...

Nick: You should have backed off out there in the field, and you need to back off now.

Martin: I'm not the one with the problem, so you back off.

Nick: You ever pull anything like you did today in a real game, and it won't be the mascot who'll be kicking your butt, it'll be me.

Mac: Martin, just walk...

Nick: What are you, his girlfriend? This isn't your business, so butt out.

Martin: I'm out of here.

Nick: Do we have an understanding?

Martin: Get out of my way.

Nick: Or what...?

Martin: Or I'll make you.

Nick: I don't think so.

Mac: Hey guys, come on guys, don't do this. The coach is watching.

Camden's House - Kitchen

Sam: Hi, Daddy.

David: We're helping.

Eric: Hello, boys. Dinner smells great.

Annie: Where were you all day?

Eric: Work...

Annie: Huh... you look rested.

Eric: I do?

Annie: Yeah, I, I called you at the office, there was no answer... and then I paged you and then I called Lou... he sounded funny when he told me you were out.

Eric: Well, I, I was out; ministering to the people, that's what I do... I minister.

Annie: You were sleeping at your office.

Eric: What... I wasn't sleep... Lou told you?

Annie: You got bed-head, and your shirt and tie are all wrinkled.

Eric: It... it was just a little cat nap.

Annie: This is so unfair.

Eric: Ah, I couldn't help it, I started writing my sermon, I kept falling asleep, and I thought if I could just lie down, you know... and, and before I knew it was time to come home.

Annie: Well, so much for us being in this no sleep thing together.

Eric: Well, I'll, I'll do the dishes and you, you, you can go to bed early and you that way, if you're lucky you might get a couple of hours in before Lucy starts yelling at Kevin again.

Kevin: Wish me luck; I'm on my way to talk some sense into my crazy wife.

Sam: Good luck.

David: He's gonna need it.

Annie: You missed a few things while you were napping at the office.

Camden's House - Kevin and Lucy's Room

Kevin: You're right about everything.

Lucy: I am?

Kevin: Almost... I don't know what it feels like to be on bed rest and I will never know what it feels like to be pregnant, but I do know what it feels like to have regrets, and if you don't finish your paper and graduate like you planned, you'll regret it. If you don't get your paper finished there's a chance, no matter how motivated you are, there's still a chance you'll never get around to it and you won't graduate. You may be able to live with that, but I can't. I love you too much.

Lucy: I'll get it done. I'll graduate in June or whenever.

Kevin: No, not June, not whenever... now, just like you planned.

Lucy: Look at me, I can't.

Kevin: You can... because I'm going to help you. I, Kevin Kinkirk, your husband, I'm going to help you complete your life-long goal. You swore that getting married and having a baby wouldn't stop you from graduating, so don't let it, okay. You worked had all last summer so you'd be finished with school in December. The way it see it, you either finish your term paper and get an "A", or I'll finish it for you, and you pray I don't ruin your GPA.

Camden's House - Kitchen

Annie: Oh, it's late, I was beginning to worry.

Martin: I'm gonna skip dinner tonight.

Eric: Martin...?

Martin: Look, I'm not hungry. Can't we just leave it at that?

Ruthie: Oh, good, you're home. I need to talk to you... alone.

Camden's House - Dining Room

Ruthie: I have guilty knowledge.

Eric: About...?

Ruthie: Martin...

Eric: How guilty?

Doorbell: (rings)

Eric: Hold that thought.

Camden's House - Foyer

Mac: Something's wrong with Martin.

Eric: Excuse me...?

Mac: You have to do something.

Eric: I... I don't know what you're talking about?

Mac: He's getting "D's" on papers. Today the coach suspended him from the team because his attitude stinks, and then he gets into a fight in the locker room. Now, he says he just tired and it's Lucy, but I don't think so, and I've tried to talk to him, but he won't tell me what's bothering him. So you have to do something, otherwise he's gonna mess this up.

Eric: Mess what up?

Mac: Baseball... it's his life. He loves it, and if he doesn't go pro, he'll play ball in college, but not if the coach labels him as a disciplinary case, no college will touch him.

Eric: Okay, I'll, I'll talked to him.

Mac: You'll have to do more than talk; you have to straighten him out, like his father would do.

Ruthie: I know what's wrong with Martin. Martin's dad's tour of duty got extended. Apparently it's been happening to a lot of solider of in Iraq. I accidentally saw an e-mail on Martin's computer screen when I was putting away laundry for mom.

Eric: Your guilty knowledge?

Ruthie: Yeah...

Mac: Oh, wow...

Eric: What...?

Mac: Martin told me that his father was coming home early next year.

Eric: Well, I didn't know it was going to be that soon, but...

Mac: No one knew but me. He didn't want anyone to know. He thought if he talked about it or if people knew that it wouldn't happen.

Ruthie: His dad won't be coming home early next year.

Eric: It doesn't look that way.

Martin: Who isn't gonna be home early next year? Who isn't gonna home early next year.

Eric: I know about your father.

Martin: Ruthie... how did she...

Ruthie: I accidentally saw the e-mail from your father.

Martin: How do you accidentally see something on my computer in my room?

Ruthie: Well, I was putting away for mom and your computer screen was...

Martin: Unbelievable...

Ruthie: I'm sorry; I really didn't mean to see it.

Eric: We should probably talk.

Martin: Oh, is that because my former best friend told you I got suspended from the team or because he told you about my "D" in history, or do you want to talk about my dad now that the family spy has reported in?

Eric: Martin...

Martin: I can't believe this... you're scolding me? She broke into my room.

Eric: Let's go upstairs and talk.

Martin: Let's not.

Eric: Why didn't you tell me about your father?

Martin: Apparently in this house, I don't need to tell anyone anything. I just have to wait for my best friend to rat me out, Ruthie to break into my room, root around and then report on what she's discovered.

Mac: I probably shouldn't have come.

Eric: Oh no, you should have come... it's, it's gonna be okay.

Camden's House - Martin's Room

Door: (knocks)

Martin: I don't wanna talk.

Eric: What don't you want to talk about? Getting a failing grade on a paper? Getting suspended from the team? Getting into a fight in the locker room? Your father's tour getting extended?

Martin: You can't help me.

Eric: I'd like to try.

Martin: How exactly are you gonna help me? Can you bring my father home? No... so, you can't help me and we don't need to talk.

Eric: Maybe...

Martin: Are you here for me or for you? I think you're here for you. You want to help. You need to help and it's killing you that you can't help me. I've got news for you... no one can help me. There is nothing anyone can say or do that will make me feel better about having my father in Iraq... nothing.

Eric: I know when my father...

Martin: You dad was a Marine, I know, but he was home most of the time, and when he wasn't you still had your mom. I have no one, and you can't possibly understand what that feels like or what I'm going through or what I go through on a daily basis. So, if you don't mind, I'd like to be alone.

Camden's House - Upstairs Hallway

Ruthie: I'm really am sorry for looking at his computer screen.

Doorbell: (rings)

Eric: Martin's more upset about his father than you looking at his e-mail.

Ruthie: Can't we do anything?

Eric: All we can do is be there for him.

Ruthie: I haven't really been very supportive. I haven't even been very friendly.

Eric: It'll be okay, Ruthie.

Eric: Who's at the door?

Annie: Wayne Newton...

Eric: Very funny...

Annie: No, Wayne Newton, the singer, he's, he's in the foyer waiting to talk to you... come on.

Camden's House - Foyer

Eric: You're Wayne Newton?

Wayne Newton: I am, and you must be Eric, or do you prefer I call you Reverend Camden?

Eric: Oh no, Eric is fine.

Wayne Newton: Thank you, thank you.

Annie: I'm a big fan. We both are.

Wayne Newton: Well that's really sweet of you, Annie. Thank you very much.

Eric: I, I can't believe you're here, in, in Glenoak, in our house.

Wayne Newton: (laughs)

Wayne Newton: Well, I am here and I am Wayne Newton. Uh, do you want me to sing "Danke Schoen" for you? I'm kidding, I'm kidding.

Annie: Oh...

Annie: (laughs)

Wayne Newton: I'm not going to sing, unless you pay me. I'm kidding again, I'm kidding. I just got back form the Middle East and frankly I'm still a little punchy.

Eric: Is there anything I can do for you Mr. Newton.

Wayne Newton: It's Wayne, please. Ah, it's not what you can do for me, but maybe what I can do for you. Ah, I have a message for Martin Brewer from his father.

Camden's House - Martin's Room

Martin: So you, you saw my dad... in Iraq?

Wayne Newton: Just got back.

Martin: Why were you there?

Wayne Newton: Vacation...

Wayne Newton: (laughs)

Wayne Newton: Oh, no, I'm the Chairman of the ah, Celebrity Circle of the USO. Ah, that's a program that oversees all celebrities, dancers, singers, ah, comedians, ah, actors and we travel to bases all over the world entertaining our brave men and women in the American Armed Forces.

Martin: What made you want to be a part of the USO?

Wayne Newton: Well, when I was not much older than you are, Martin, I ah, wanted to be a solider and ah, I have bad asthma, and so they couldn't take me. I went back to Lake Tahoe where I was appearing, and ah, walked out on stage and the showroom was filled with Marines and I thought to myself I can do this, I, I can entertain our troops and so a couple of years later I found myself in Vietnam and I've been going ever since... with the USO wherever duty calls.

Martin: Who's my dad?

Wayne Newton: Well you dad's tired and he wants to come home and he misses you.

Martin: I miss him, too.

Wayne Newton: You know I talked him right after he e-mailed you explaining that his tour of duty had been extended and a lot of the men and women in his unit had to send the same kind of e-mail to their families. I was also their when he received your e-mail in return.

Martin: I, ah, I feel badly about that e-mail.

Wayne Newton: Look here... you were angry and that's understandable and acceptable.

Martin: It's just so hard. You tell yourself you can wait for a certain day and then it's sorry, too bad, he's not coming home after all. I, I just, I lost it.

Wayne Newton: Your dad told me he can take anything the enemy dishes out, but he just can't stand the thought of you being in pain or unhappy. He's torn between his duty as a parent and his duty to his country.

Martin: That's not good. He shouldn't be thinkin' about me. He shouldn't be thinkin' about anything except staying alive.

Wayne Newton: Well, I wish I were delivering your, your dad to you, ah, but this is the best that I could do. I want you to know, that I'm glad I got to meet you, Martin. And I'm really happy I got a chance to meet your dad. You'd should be really proud of him; I know he's proud of you. And I know you think, no one understands what you're going through right now and nobody understands the kind of sacrifices you're making, but you're wrong and you're not alone. There are over a hundred-thousand troops over there and all of them had to leave families. And when it's right, this is a lady that ah, runs the local support group for families who have ah, relatives that are fighting in the Middle East and she's a friend of mine, give her a call.

Camden's House - Foyer

Wayne Newton: War is really hard on, on the soldiers but it, it's equally as hard on the family left behind and people don't realize that of all the soldiers over there fighting, that they're relatives are back here that are waiting, wondering and worrying.

Eric: Thanks for coming.

Wayne Newton: Happy to do all I can do.

Eric: I didn't realize that you did this... visited families of soldiers serving overseas.

Wayne Newton: Well, I found that it helps people to be with someone who just seen their son or daughter, wife or husband, or mother or father and that's the least I can do for them considering all they've done for us.

Annie: Is there anything I can get you... something to eat or, or drink?

Wayne Newton: That is really sweet... thank you, but I have a couple of stops I have to make tonight yet, and if you don't mind I'd like to take a rain check.

Wayne Newton: Thank you...

Annie: Bye...

Eric: Goodnight...

Wayne Newton: Goodnight...

Camden's House - Martin's Room

Door: (knocks)

Martin: Come in.

Ruthie: Did I just see Wayne Newton come out of your room?

Martin: Yeah...

Ruthie: I'm not even going to ask.

Martin: He talked to my dad and brought a message back for me.

Ruthie: What was the message?

Martin: Hang in there.

Ruthie: I really am sorry for looking at your computer.

Martin: I'm sorry, too. I have been a jerk lately.

Ruthie: So I'm sorry and you're sorry... is everything okay?

Martin: Yeah, we're okay, Ruthie.

Ruthie: Where are you going?

Martin: I just sent an apology e-mail to my dad, and I apologize to you... I just have a few more and then I'll be finished.

Camden's House - Kitchen

Martin: I have to go the Promenade, if that's okay. And I'm sorry about earlier... what I said. I was wrong. You can help, you do help... all of you... help. You guys have been so great to me, and ever time I think about how much I miss my dad, I just think of how much more I'd miss him if it wasn't for the Camdens. I'm really lucky to have all of you in my life.

Annie: We feel lucky to have you in our life, too.

Eric: Well?

Kevin: Lucy's final term paper... all she needs are a couple of things from the library, a few references, and she's finished.

Kevin: And better yet, she's asleep.

Eric: (sighs)

Promenade

Martin: Thanks for meeting me. I'm sorry about practice and uh the fight in the locker room, and ah, about my attitude.

Terry: What about the mascot? Are you sorry about the mascot?

Martin: Yeah, I'm sorry about the mascot, too.

Terry: Martin, I know I'm just your coach, but I hope that in the future, if you have a problem, you'll discuss it with me. I'm here for you, for all my guys and I know I can't bring your father home from Iraq, but sometimes it helps just to have a friend to talk to about what's bothering you. Because if you don't let off steam in a healthy way... emotions tend to build up, and well before you know it, you end up...

Martin: Yelling at a guy in a cat costume?

Terry: Yeah, exactly.

Martin: So...

Terry: So... I guess I'll see you at practice tomorrow.

Martin: I plan on apologizing to Nick, justa so you know.

Terry: Goodnight...

Martin: Goodnight, Coach. Hey, Coach...

Terry: Yeah...

Martin: How did you know about my dad?

Terry: Why don't you ask him?

Mac: I called the coach and told him about your father. I'm sorry, I thought he should know. He told me he was gonna meet you here and suggested that I come. He thought you might need a friend, even a former best friend. I was not ratting you out. Are we still friends?

Martin: Yeah...

Mac: Cool... you wanna go shoot a game of pool? There's a cute new waitress.

Martin: How cute?

Mac: If you don't want her, I'll take a shot. Actually, I already did.

Martin: And...?

Mac: She winked at me.

Martin: She probably had something in her eye.

Mac: No... you think.

Martin: I'll go with you, but ah, I'll find my own girlfriend.

Mac: (laughs)

Camden's House - Kitchen

Lucy: Come on; tell me where you're taking me.

Kevin: I wanted to get you something special for graduation.

Lucy: What'd you get me?

Kevin: Graduation...

Camden's House - Backyard

Kevin: I know you wanted to go to your graduation ceremony, so I talked to the Dean, actually your father talked to the Dean, and he talked to some other students, and they all agreed to be here with you. It's a rehearsal for them, but for you, this is the real thing, an official graduation.

Lucy: No...

Kevin: Yes...

Lucy: I love you.

Kevin: You should. So, what'd you say? Are you ready to graduate?

Lucy: Absolutely.

Dean Ryan: Kelly Anne James... congratulations. Henry Michael Johnson... congratulations... Lucy Camden Kinkirk... congratulations Mrs. Kinkirk.

Lucy: Thank you, Dean Ryan. I did it! I'm a graduate!

Crowd: (applause)
