EXT. TELEGRAPH OFFICE - ESTABLISHING - DAY ONE 1

INT. TELEGRAPH OFFICE - DAY ONE 2

HORACE, behind the counter, looks deeply into the newly arrived mailbag, while MIKE hangs over his shoulder. He straightens, pulling a package from the bag, and bumps into her, she's standing so closely.

HORACE
Found it.

MIKE
I'm sorry, Horace.

HORACE
You been askin' after it every day this week, must be important.

MIKE
The American Medical Society recently voted to accept women doctors --

Horace hands the package to Mike and she starts to open the treasure, revealing a new medical journal. As she quickly turns the pages to the back of the journal --

MIKE
They publish the latest in medical research from the most renowned physicians in the country...

Then, *too excited to look herself, she hands the journal to Horace.

MIKE
Please... you look.

Horace takes the journal and reads down the list of names.

HORACE
Dr. Michaela Quinn. You *been accepted.

Mike opens her eyes and looks at her name in the journal. She gently runs her finger over her name in print.

OFF Mike, glowing, as the news sinks in.

EXT. GRACE'S CAFE - DAY ONE 3

The cafe's packed. GRACE, a coffeepot in one hand and a pitcher of cider in the other, serves the REVEREND, LOREN, and ROBERT E.

LOREN
Look at 'im.

+LOREN'S POV 3A

MATTHEW, quiet, while in b.g., BRIAN, SULLY and COLLEEN talk animatedly at the end of the same table.

LOREN (O.S.)
He's been mopin' around for months. Oughta be spendin' more time with people his own age.

+BACK TO SCENE 3B

ROBERT E
You mean a young lady his own age.

LOREN
It'd be good for him, don't you think, Reverend?

REVEREND
Well, I don't see how it could hurt.

GRACE
He won't thank you for buttin' in.

LOREN
It ain't buttin' in. Just wanna see him happy again.

ROBERT E
(sotto to Loren)
Go on, talk to 'im.

LOREN
Ah... Matthew...

Matthew looks up.

LOREN
Widow Brown and her daughter Melanie were in the store yesterday. Melanie spoke real highly of you.

Matthew shrugs gently, doesn't take the bait.

LOREN
Thought you might like to join us for a Sunday stroll.

MATTHEW
Thanks Loren, but I don't --

REVEREND
A Sunday stroll with a pretty girl's a fine way to spend an afternoon, don't you agree, Robert E?

ROBERT E
I wouldn't say no to a pretty girl.

Grace gives Robert E a look.

ROBERT E
Well, if I wasn't already married... 'n happily married, too.

LOREN
What d'ya say Matthew?

Matthew squirms, uncomfortable under the pressure. Sully takes notice.

GRACE
Now, don't go forcin' him, if he don't wanna go.

MATTHEW
'Preciate the invitation, but I --

LOREN
Matthew, truth is, I... sorta told 'em you'd come.

MATTHEW
You told 'em I'd come?

LOREN
(nods)
They're lookin' forward to seein' you.

MATTHEW
I ain't ready for courtin'.

LOREN
Who said anythin' 'bout courtin'?

Reverend, Robert E, "who us?, not us?" reactions.

LOREN
We're talkin' 'bout strollin', not courtin.

REVEREND
Two completely different subjects.

Matthew looks to Sully for help.

SULLY
It's up to you.

MATTHEW
(to Loren)
You already said yes?

Loren nods.

LOREN
'Fraid so.

MATTHEW
Well, alright. Just this once.

Loren, Robert E, and the Reverend, nod agreements, "Well done."

+ANGLE ON A BLACK BOY 9

inching closer to the serving table, where fresh baked pies are tempting him. Seeing the adults occupied, he makes his move. He grabs a cooling pie from the table and heads toward the alley between the clinic and the telegraph office.

Grace sees the boy running away.

GRACE
My pie! Stop that boy!

Sully and the Reverend try to block his path to the alley. He sees them and does a quick U-turn, while precariously balancing the pie. Loren and Robert E try to grab him, but he dodges them both, leaving them grasping at air.

+ON THE ALLEY 10

Mike, unaware of the commotion, walks toward the cafe, reading her prized journal.

who tries to keep his speed steady, and the pie balanced, as he runs around the tables with Sully, Robert E, and Matthew chasing him.[

+CLOSE ON THE BOY 11A

Suddenly, near the alley, his brow furrows with pain and he stops. He holds the pie with one hand as he rubs his knee, which is hurting him. (The others don't see this, since his back is to them.) Turning, he sees the others are about to catch him, and he starts running toward the alley --

+SCENE 11B

Turning the corner, his knee buckles and he stumbles; ]the pie flies out of his hands and into Mike's chest, dripping all over her dress.

Everyone rushes to Mike. Sully, there first, helps Mike brush pie off her dress.

SULLY
You alright?

MIKE
I'm fine.

Grace, Robert E, Matthew, Colleen, Brian, Reverend, gather around the commotion. A chorus of "Are you alrights?" The boy gets up slowly, rubbing his knee. He tries to sneak away, but Loren holds the Boy by the shirt-sleeve.

GRACE
Don't let 'im get away.

Mike looks at the boy, shaking with fear, then, dips her finger into the pie filling covering the front of her dress and tastes it, *smiling at him:

MIKE
Mmmm, apple, my favorite.

[LOREN
Oughta be thrown in jail.

SULLY
Nobody's goin' to jail.

GRACE
He stole my pie!

MIKE
I'm sure there's an explanation.

EXT. GRACE'S CAFE - DAY ONE - LATER 12

*Sully, Grace, Colleen, Brian, Matthew, the Reverend and Loren stand over the Boy. Mike wipes the last of the pie from her dress. The Boy sits at the table, thin, small for his age, head bowed, afraid to look up.[

Sully
What's your name?

]The boy looks to Grace, her lips pursed, then back to Mike, before he lowers his head. Mike lifts his chin, smiling...

MIKE
(appealing)
Please, tell us your name.

The boy looks up to Robert E, who nods and squeezes his shoulder for encouragement.

BOY
Anthony.

MIKE
Anthony, where are your parents?

The boy is silent, then looks down at the table.

GRACE
(shaking her head)
Stealin' pies.

ROBERT E
Probably just hungry.

The Boy looks to Grace, she doesn't blink.

GRACE
No excuse for stealin'.

Robert E looks to Grace, surprised at her attitude.

MIKE
I believe you're right, Robert E.

Mike puts her hand on the boy's shoulder.

MIKE
Grace, we'll have a serving of your meatloaf.

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 12

Grace takes a beat, not sure she likes the idea of serving this young pie thief. Robert E shoots her a look, then she relents and turns to the task.

SULLY
We oughta check over at Shanty Town. There's new people comin' in all the time. Maybe somebody'll know who he is.

ROBERT E
I'll go along with you. Like to know who this young fella belongs to.

Grace sets a serving of meatloaf in front of the boy, who's still too scared to do more than sit there.

MIKE
It's alright, don't be afraid.

Anthony hesitates a beat, then hunger gets the best of him and he digs in, putting a protective arm around his plate.

Grace looks at Anthony a moment, then turns away, not watching him finish the meal.

EXT. SHANTY TOWN - DAY ONE 13

Sully, Mike, Robert E and Anthony ride up in a wagon. Shanty Town, a rag tag collection of lean-tos and shacks. Dismounting, they pick their way through the curious but guarded residents.

MIKE
(to Anthony)
Are your parents here?

Anthony is silent. A WOMAN comes out of a shack, followed by THREE SMALL CHILDREN, and approaches Mike and Anthony.

WOMAN
Where you been boy? Go on, get in the house.

Anthony doesn't move.

MIKE
Are you Anthony's mother?

WOMAN
No ma'am, I ain't his ma. What's he done?*
(to Anthony)
Go on now... Do what I say.

(CONTINUED)

9.

CONTINUED: 13

Anthony leans closer to Mike. The woman shrugs, giving up.

WOMAN
(lowering her voice)
His ma upped an' died a few months back. I been *watchin' out for him.
(a beat)
Hope he ain't been botherin' you.

MIKE
No, no. We were just concerned.

WOMAN
The boy's a handful, but he ain't got nobody else.

ROBERT E
Me and Grace got plenty of room. We can take the boy.
(to the boy)
That is, if it's alright with you, Anthony?

The boy looks at Robert E and nods "yes." Mike reacts, touched by Robert E's offer.

EXT. GRACE'S CAFE - DAY ONE 14

Anthony sits at a table, hands folded in front of him, watching Robert E and Grace talk, unable to hear what they are saying.

+CLOSE ON GRACE AND ROBERT E 15

GRACE
That boy barely knows us. He ain't gonna feel at home with strangers.

ROBERT E
Folks in Shanty Town got [enough to] handle. Past few months, he's been mostly lookin' after himself.

GRACE
Exactly. He needs lookin' after, and with you and me as busy as we are, we just don't have time to be carin' for a boy.

ROBERT E
You found time to take care o' a Cheyenne baby.

(CONTINUED)

10.

CONTINUED: 15

GRACE
That baby was like my own. It was different.

ROBERT E
How?

GRACE
(beat, frustrated)
It just was.

ROBERT E
Look at him. He's all alone.

For the first time, Grace takes a real look at Anthony.

ROBERT E
Let him stay, just for a few days, 'til Dr. Mike and me can find a family for 'im?

Anthony looks directly at Grace, quietly asking for sanctuary. Grace looks back to Robert E. After a beat --

GRACE
For a few days.

Grace turns away and heads toward the stove. OFF Robert E, looking at Anthony, then to Grace, wondering if a few days will be enough time to bring a family together.

EXT. GENERAL STORE PORCH - DAY TWO 16

Loren waits on the porch with WIDOW BROWN and her daughter MELANIE. Loren looks up the street for Matthew, worried he might not show. Then, to Loren's relief, Matthew walks up.

LOREN
Matthew, there you are.

Loren's about to make introductions, when Melanie extends her hand.

MELANIE
Melanie Brown, pleased to meet you, Matthew Cooper. Sure is sweet of you to come out with me today.

LOREN
(pleased)
You two go on ahead, Mrs. Brown and I'll catch up.

(CONTINUED)

11.

CONTINUED: 16

MELANIE
We'll see you later Mama, Mr. Bray.

Melanie takes Matthew's arm and begins to lead him down the street. Matthew shoots Loren a look over his shoulder, but Melanie's already steering him toward the train depot.

+MATTHEW AND MELANIE 17

MELANIE
Have you lived in Colorado Springs all your life?

MATTHEW
I was born --

MELANIE
Mama and I just moved here from St. Louis. After Daddy died, Mama thought the mountain air would be good for us. You ever been to a big city, like St. Louis?

MATTHEW
We went --

MELANIE
I wanna see all the big cities, New York, San Francisco. Maybe even take a ship to London or Paris. But, I wouldn't go 'til after I was married, of course. You plan on getting married?

MATTHEW
I --

MELANIE
Well, sure you're planning on it. Everybody does. There's no point to growing up if you don't get married, have children...

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. STREET - DAY TWO 18

Matthew and Melanie, having made the town circuit, return down the main street toward the store. She's still talking. Matthew's face says it all.

(CONTINUED)

12.

CONTINUED: 18

MELANIE
You know, you're awfully quiet. I bet you've got a lot of adventures to talk about --

Matthew starts to answer, then thinks better of it, and just listens, as Melanie continues.

MELANIE
I had an adventure once at the St. Louis Fair. I got separated from Mama and Daddy. I was all alone, for almost an hour, before they found me. And...

EXT. GENERAL STORE - (CONTINUOUS) - DAY TWO 18A

Loren and Widow Brown wait on the steps to see if a love match has sparked. The only thing sparked is Matthew's temper, from too much talk. He hands Melanie up to her mother on the porch.

MATTHEW
(talking quickly)
Mr. Bray, I gotta be gettin' back to work.

MELANIE
Can we count on seeing you next week at the Sunday picnic? The Reverend's asked me to give a little talk about St. Louis. You've just got to come.

MATTHEW
Thanks. But, I think I gotta be in... Soda Springs. Yeah, I'll be in Soda Springs all day.

Matthew doffs his hat.

MATTHEW
Nice meetin' you.

He takes off, leaving Loren and the ladies behind.

EXT. GRACE'S CAFE - CONTINUOUS - DAY TWO 19

Matthew walks past on the road, relieved to be on his own. Grace works over the stove, Horace and MYRA, SAMANTHA and the Reverend sit at a nearby table.

REVEREND
Matthew, come sit down.

(CONTINUED)

13.

CONTINUED: 19

Matthew stops, walks over. The Reverend pulls out a chair. Matthew can't refuse.

MYRA
How was your stroll with Widow Brown's daughter?

MATTHEW
Well...

REVEREND
She's a lovely young lady.

HORACE
You *courtin' Widow Brown's daughter?

MATTHEW
No, I'm not courtin'. Just strollin'.

HORACE
That's good, 'cause I was hopin'... that is, my cousin Sophelia's arrivin' for a visit and I sure would be grateful if you'd escort her 'round while she's here.

MYRA
You'd be doin' us a big favor. We promised her she'd have a real nice time while she was here.

REVEREND
You promised her, did you?

Myra and Horace nod in unison.

REVEREND
(to Matthew)
They promised.

Matthew's caught... Not again. He accepts defeat.

+ON GRACE 20

who clears plates from the nearby table, not seeing Anthony walk up behind her. Anthony stops, takes a moment, then taps her on the back. Grace turns around, startled.

GRACE
Oh... Thought you were helpin' Robert E this afternoon.

(CONTINUED)

ANTHONY
I can help you.

Anthony starts to clear the plates from a table. Anthony piles two plates on top of one another. They slip, but he catches them.

GRACE
Careful there.

Graces takes the plates from him.

GRACE
It's alright. I can do it myself.

Anthony steps away, watches Grace a moment, then...

ANTHONY
Sorry I stole your pie.

Grace stops, turns to Anthony. A beat, silence, she can't think of anything to say, then...

GRACE
It was just a pie. I can bake another. Why don't you run along and play?

Anthony doesn't move. Grace waves him away.

GRACE
Go on... I'll see you later.

Anthony reluctantly leaves.

EXT. ROBERT E'S HOUSE - DAY TWO 21

Anthony sits alone on the steps, scratching a drawing in the dirt. Brian rides Sully's bicycle past the clinic and the General Store around the water tower. Brian notices Anthony and skids to a stop in front of him.

BRIAN
Hey, whatcha doin'?

Anthony looks at Brian, not sure what to make of this. No white boy has ever spoken to him before.

BRIAN
You were sure funny with that pie. My ma's still tryin' to get her dress clean.

Anthony looks down, embarrassed.

(CONTINUED)

15.

CONTINUED: 21

BRIAN
I didn't mean... She's not mad or nothin'.
(a beat, thinks of something to cheer Anthony)
Hey! You wanna ride my bicycle?

Anthony looks at the bicycle. He'd love to try, but doesn't move.

BRIAN
It's really Sully's, but he won't mind. Come on...

ANTHONY
Miss Grace might not like it.

BRIAN
Are Grace and Robert E your new ma and pa?

ANTHONY
(shakes his head)
Don't think Miss Grace likes me much.

BRIAN
(thinks, then:*)
Try pickin' her some flowers. Sully says ladies always like gettin' flowers.

ANTHONY
*Flowers?

BRIAN
Yep. Flowers. Hey, you sure you don't wanna try my bicycle?

Anthony can't resist the pull of the new bicycle. He stands and runs his fingers over the front wheel, then confesses.

ANTHONY
Don't know how.

Brian gets off and makes room for Anthony.

BRIAN
Here. You get on and I'll push.*

Anthony gets on the bike as Brian holds it steady. Anthony begins to pedal and they move slowly in a circle. But before Anthony can get going on his own, he [winces with pain,] stops pedaling and rubs his knees.

(CONTINUED)

BRIAN
Hey, why'd you stop?

Anthony gets off and walks stiffly back to the porch. He sits down and begins rubbing his knees.

BRIAN
You alright?

ANTHONY
Yeah.

[He can't help but continue rubbing his knee in pain.]

BRIAN
Maybe I should get my ma. She's a doctor.

ANTHONY
(quickly)
No.

Anthony challenges Brian with a look.

ANTHONY
Miss Grace'll [make me go ]away for sure if she finds out I'm broken.

BRIAN
Broken?

ANTHONY
*Promise you won't tell.

Brian sees how important it is to Anthony.

BRIAN
Alright. I promise.

EXT. GRACE'S CAFE - DAY TWO 22

Grace is lining up baking ingredients, flour, sugar, eggs, on a table.

MIKE
Grace?

GRACE
(glances up)
Dr. Mike.

Grace continues to gather baking utensils.

(CONTINUED)

MIKE
How are things with Anthony?

GRACE
Fine. Everythin's fine. 'Cept I gotta special order for two of my lemon surprise cakes.

Mike waits for her to continue.

GRACE
I gotta get 'em done by this evening.

Grace measures two cups of flour into a bowl.

MIKE
I'm glad to hear things are going so well. Sometimes little boys take getting used to.

Grace moves to the next ingredient, measuring a cup of sugar and adding it to the bowl.

GRACE
I was just gettin' used to the idea of Robert E and me alone...*

Grace measures another cup of sugar for the bowl.

MIKE
It was a surprise for me, too, when the children came into my life. The first week we were together, Brian broke a candy jar in Loren's store, refused to sleep at the homestead, and ran away to live with the Cheyenne.

GRACE
This mornin' I found the boy tryin' to hide his bedsheets...
(she doesn't know how to put this)
He wet 'em.

Grace measures yet another cup of sugar and adds it to the bowl.

MIKE
This is new for him, as well as for you and Robert E.

Mike watches Grace add even more sugar to the cake mix.

MIKE
In the beginning, I was so unsure of myself that I even wrote to my mother, begging for advice --

GRACE
Thank you Dr. Mike, but, I won't be needin' advice. You an' Robert E'll find another home for him soon.

Grace finally stops in the middle of adding even more sugar, looks down at the mixture in the bowl. Realizes what she's done.

GRACE
Look at this mess. I gotta start all over. I'm sorry Dr. Mike, I don't have time for talkin', if I'm gonna fill this order today.

Grace gets up and throws the mixture out, we HOLD on Mike, concerned.

FADE OUT.

FADE IN:

EXT. LIVERY - DAY THREE 23

Sully and Robert E lean on barrels, whittling wood. Anthony hangs on the fence watching them. His eyes follow Robert E's hands as he makes each cut. Robert E looks up and catches him staring.

ROBERT E
Sure you don't wanna learn? I'd be happy to teach you.

He motions for Anthony to come sit beside him.

SULLY
Robert E can make just 'bout anything.

Anthony is hesitant, as Sully hands him a whittling tool. Anthony turns it over in his hand. Robert E hands Anthony a piece of wood.

ROBERT E
Now hold the blade facin' away from you.

Robert E demonstrates a smooth cut, but Anthony shaves off a ragged piece.

ROBERT E
Take your time, hold the blade nice and steady.

Robert E moves behind Anthony, putting his hands over Anthony's as he guides several steady strokes.

ROBERT E
There you go. You got a natural talent for woodworkin'.
(to Sully)
Don't you think?

SULLY
Sure do. What're you gonna make first?

Anthony glows under their praise, thinks a moment.

ANTHONY
(to Robert E)
Could I... you think I could make a bicycle?

(CONTINUED)

20.

ROBERT E
(mock seriousness)
I don't know, carvin' a whole bicycle's a pretty tall order for a beginner.

ANTHONY
Not a real one.
(gesturing, small size)
This big.

ROBERT E
With a little help, [I'll bet you can].

Horace walks up.

HORACE
Hey Sully, Robert E. Did you get a chance to oil the axle on my surrey, yet?

ROBERT E
Sure, just hitched her up for you. Come an' help me bring her 'round, Anthony.

Robert E motions for Anthony to follow. They walk around the corner of the barn to get the surrey.

HORACE
Myra and I're takin' Matthew and my cousin Sophelia for a surrey ride.

SULLY
Matthew know 'bout this?

HORACE
Promised he'd be there.

Robert E returns with Anthony leading the horse and surrey. Robert E nods, then Anthony shyly hands the reins to Horace.

ROBERT E
That'll be two bits.

Horace hands him the money.

HORACE
Thank you Robert E. See you, Sully and...

Horace gives Anthony a questioning look.

HORACE

Horace extends his hand to Anthony. Anthony looks to Robert E, who nods his okay. Anthony shakes Horace's hand.

SULLY
I gotta be goin' too. Robert E. Anthony.

Horace and Sully nod goodbye to Anthony, and now, with Robert E beside him, Anthony looks straight back at Horace, unafraid, as the two men leave. A beat, then...

ANTHONY
*(with wonder)
I'm not colored anymore, am I?

ROBERT E
(taken aback)
What're* you talkin' about?

ANTHONY
I'm stayin' with you now, and you're not colored. People treat you special.

ROBERT E
Anthony, listen, you got it all wrong. Just 'cause I live in town, and run a business, don't mean I'm different than I always been.

Robert E looks at Anthony's uncomprehending face.

ROBERT E
You understand what I'm sayin'? It don't matter where we live or what we do, we'll always be colored.

ANTHONY
(shakes his head)
Since I been livin' with you, people treat me better'n just colored. I like it.

OFF Robert E's bemused look.

22.

EXT. TELEGRAPH OFFICE - DAY THREE 24

Matthew arrives for his date. Horace's surrey is hitched up outside. Horace, Myra and SOPHELIA, (a Bing cousin for sure -- the resemblance is telling), are waiting.

HORACE
Matthew, this is my cousin, Sophelia.

MATTHEW
Nice to meet you.

Sophelia stares, but doesn't speak, obviously taken with Matthew.

MYRA
She's a little shy.
(to Sophelia)
Go on, say hello.

Nothing.

HORACE
Don't worry, she'll warm up once we're on our way.

Horace helps Myra and Sophelia into the surrey. We HOLD on Matthew's face. He's two for two, and counting.

EXT. GRACE'S CAFE - DAY FOUR 25

Grace prepares baking ingredients for a pie. Anthony comes over from the livery, he's got something hidden behind his back. He stands right next to Grace, who doesn't acknowledge him, at first. A beat, then Anthony holds out the wildflowers he's kept hidden behind his back. Grace hesitates, then takes the flowers.

GRACE
Robert E tell you to do this?

Anthony shakes his head "no."

ANTHONY
Ladies like gettin' flowers.

GRACE
(can't help but smile)
They do, huh?

Grace sniffs the flowers, then puts them in a nearby pitcher. She takes an apple from the bowl next to the flowers, turns, and hands the apple to Anthony.

Anthony takes the apple, grinning as he takes a big bite.

23.

GRACE
You ever bake a pie?

Anthony shakes his head "no."

GRACE
I could use some help.

ANTHONY
Yes ma'am.

Anthony puts his apple down, ready to help. Grace clears a work space on the table for Anthony, then puts a bowl of peeled apples in front of him.

GRACE
First we need to chop these apples into small pieces. Like this.

Grace picks up a knife, holds the apple steady with one hand and cuts pieces with the other. She hands the knife to Anthony.

GRACE
Now you try.

Anthony tries to do the same, but [it hurts his hand and he winces with pain]. He holds the knife with two hands to get more leverage, cuts one piece, then stops, *still in pain, flexing his fingers. Grace notices.

GRACE
Somethin' wrong?

ANTHONY
No.

Anthony tries again, but can't manage. Grace sees this and takes the knife from Anthony's hands, moving the apples out of the way. She puts a bowl and flour in front of him.

GRACE
I'll do the choppin'. You can measure the flour for the pie crusts.

Anthony smiles, thankful for an easier task.

AT THE LIVERY 26

Robert E watches Grace and Anthony baking together. The Reverend walks up.

REVEREND

ROBERT E
Not just yet, Reverend. Might not be needin' your help after all.

REVEREND
Fine. I'm glad to see things are working out so well.

Robert E smiles at the Reverend, then looks back to Grace and Anthony.

ROBERT E
Yep, with a little luck, they're gonna work out just fine.

+EXT. GENERAL STORE - DAY FOUR* 26C

Mike and Sully are *passing by, when Loren and Myra join them, carrying copies of the Gazette, with the headline, "Dr. Mike Admitted to Medical Society."

LOREN

LOREN
S'pose now you'll be raisin' your prices.

MIKE
Of course not.

Sully takes the paper from Mike.

SULLY
I'm gonna frame this -- put it up on the clinic wall.

[MIKE
I'll be there in a minute -- I want to see Grace.

Sully takes the paper with him and leaves. As she walks away, Hank mutters to Loren:

HANK
And you thought she was a know-it-all before...]

INT. GRACE'S CAFE - DAY FOUR* 27

Anthony cuts another star out of the dough and lays it over the top of the pie, overlapping the tip of the last star. As he continues covering it with more stars:

GRACE
Well, it's... different.

Grace opens the oven while Anthony hands her *a pie. He flexes and rotates his wrist before handing Grace the next pie, as Mike walks up.

MIKE
You two look like you're having a productive afternoon.

ANTHONY
Miss Grace's teachin' me 'bout pie-bakin'.

MIKE
(smiling)
As a matter fact, she also taught Brian to bake his first pie.

Grace remembers teaching Brian and shares a look with Mike.

GRACE
Took first prize, too.

Anthony, not happy hearing Grace talk about another boy, interrupts, showing off, and points to the pie with the star crust.

ANTHONY
I made this one myself.

MIKE
Oh, it looks very festive.

Grace turns, expecting Anthony to hand her the last pie. Anthony rubs his wrist and bends his knee, rubbing it, before gingerly picking up his pie.

He turns toward Grace, takes a step, but his knee buckles. He drops the pie. Mike and Grace immediately go to him.

GRACE
Anthony?

Anthony moans softly, rubbing his knees.

ANTHONY
Sorry 'bout the pie.

GRACE
Don't you worry 'bout the pie --

She gathers him into her arms, helping him up -- but he's unable to walk. Grace and Mike exchange a worried look --

INT. CLINIC - DAY FOUR 28

Anthony sits on the examining table. Mike checks his arms and legs. Grace stands close, watching. Anthony stares at the wall, trying to suppress the pain, rocking slightly in a hypnotic rhythm.

MIKE
Anthony...
(gently turning his head toward her)
Where does it hurt? Can you show me?

Anthony looks at Grace, then looks back to the wall, resuming the slight rocking. Mike realizes Anthony won't talk with Grace there.

MIKE
Grace, would you please find Colleen for me.

Grace takes a beat, then leaves.

MIKE
Don't be afraid, Anthony. If you help me by answering my questions, it will be easier for me to help you. Can you tell me exactly where it hurts?

Can he trust her? Anthony considers, then indicates his wrists and knees.

MIKE
Have you felt this pain before?

He nods yes.

MIKE
When did it begin?

ANTHONY
My mama said it's 'cause I'm a bad boy. But I was good today.

MIKE
Yes, you were a very good boy. You're in pain because you're ill, not because you're bad.

Mike reassures him, gently stroking his hand. Anthony holds onto Mike's hand.

MIKE
Now lie back, rest. I'll get you something to take away the pain.

Anthony won't let go of her hand.

ANTHONY
Can you fix me?

Mike reacts to his direct appeal. She isn't sure what to say.[

MIKE
I'm going to try my best.

She squeezes his hand...]

EXT. CLINIC PORCH - DAY FOUR 29

Robert E paces the porch length while Grace sits quietly on the bench. Mike comes out of the clinic.

ROBERT E
How is he?

MIKE
I've given him laudanum. The pain has subsided. He's resting now.

ROBERT E
What's wrong with him?

MIKE
I can't be certain yet. He's slightly jaundiced, but the pain attacks are puzzling. I've never seen anything like them before.

ROBERT E
But, you can make him better?

Mike is uncomfortable not being able to give a definitive diagnosis.

MIKE
(hedging)
I can't be sure. Right now I don't know exactly what caused the pain. I'll observe him closely for the next few days. And I'll wire the members of the* society. They're the finest medical minds in the country. I'm sure they'll be able help me make a diagnosis.

ROBERT E
Can we see him?

MIKE
Certainly.

Robert E heads into the clinic and turns back to Grace, who isn't following.

ROBERT E
You comin'?

GRACE
In a minute.

Robert E nods, then turns and goes into the clinic.

GRACE
If you know what's wrong with the boy, I want you to tell me. Don't hold back.

MIKE
Grace... I'm sorry, I truly don't know yet. Right now, Anthony seems fine.

GRACE
You sure?

Mike's not so sure.

MIKE
We'll know more in a few days.

GRACE
Robert E's growin' more attached to that boy every day. I don't want him gettin' his heart broke.

Grace goes into the clinic, leaving Mike hoping she'll find the answers.

EXT. GENERAL STORE - DAY FIVE 30

Matthew comes out of the store, carrying supplies to his wagon, with Loren, Myra and Horace on his heels. HANK watches the scene from the barbershop steps.

LOREN
If you come with us, Melanie promised she'd stop talkin' long enough to let you get a few words in.

Before Matthew can answer --

HORACE
Cousin Sophelia was just a little nervous yesterday. She really can talk.

Matthew looks at Horace, disbelieving.

HORACE
Honest, I've heard her.

MYRA
Matthew, if you'll just give her another chance. I know --

MATTHEW
(to Loren)
It ain't Melanie's talkin'...
(to Horace and Myra)
... or Sophelia's not talkin'. I 'preciate what you're tryin' to do. It's... I just can't.

Matthew boards the wagon and heads off, leaving his unhappy matchmakers behind.

HANK
Leave the boy alone. Your match makin' ain't what he needs.

HORACE
*And you know what he needs?

HANK
Yeah. What he needs is somethin' the Widow Brown's daughter and cousin Sophelia can't even 'magine.

MYRA
You think that solves everythin'.

HANK
I think, Matthew'd be the one to decide that.

INT. OLD HOMESTEAD BARN - *DUSK FIVE 31

Matthew's repairing leather reins and a halter when he hears a KNOCK on the door. He looks up to see EMMA standing alone -- lovely, even under the overdone makeup and the skimpy outfit.

EMMA
You Matthew Cooper?

MATTHEW
Yeah.

EMMA
I'm Emma. Hank sent me.

MATTHEW
Hank?

EMMA
Said you needed some cheerin' up.

MATTHEW
I don't think --

EMMA
Not s'posed to take no for an answer.

Emma moves into the barn, not waiting for an invitation. She looks around.

MATTHEW
Hold on. There's been a mistake.

EMMA
Hank said you'd be shy. Come on. We got all night.

Emma moves toward Matthew.

MATTHEW
You shouldn't be here.

She brushes aside his protest and picks up the reins.

EMMA
You been workin' on this?

MATTHEW
They're for my little brother.

EMMA
What's his name?

MATTHEW
Brian.

EMMA
He as handsome as you?

Matthew can't meet her eyes.

MATTHEW
He's been after me to finish 'em so he and his horse Taffy can show off at the Founders' Day picnic.

EMMA
My brother, Thomas, loves horses. He's always beggin' me to take 'im ridin'. Still too small for his own horse, so I [take 'im ridin' with ]me --
(remembering)
I mean... I used to.

MATTHEW
(smiling)
I did the same with Brian.

A beat, silence, Matthew can't take his eyes off her. Emma realizes she's said too much, gets back to business, running her fingers over the reins.

EMMA
These are nice. You got a real feel for workin' *with your hands.

Matthew takes the reins from her. Their hands touch. A beat, their eyes lock, then Matthew turns away.

MATTHEW
I think it's time you were gettin' back.

EMMA
It's an awful long walk to town.

MATTHEW
I'll take you.

EMMA
Hank'll be mad if I get back too soon.

MATTHEW
Don't worry, I'll make sure Hank's not mad.

Matthew opens the door. She starts to go out, then turns around:

EMMA
What 'bout you? You ain't mad I came, are you?

MATTHEW
(he's confused, but he knows:)
No... I ain't mad.

She smiles at him -- is it a professional smile, or something heartfelt? Matthew looks at her, trying to figure it out, then gets self-conscious:

MATTHEW
Come on. Let's go.

They go out...

EXT. NEW HOMESTEAD - DAY SIX 32

It's a family picnic. Brian and Sully are teaching Anthony to ride the bike. Colleen and Grace are arranging food on the picnic table, as Robert E and Mike join them with plates and utensils for the table.

+SULLY AND BRIAN 33

hold the bike as Anthony begins to pedal.

BRIAN
Faster... Pedal faster.

Anthony pedals faster as Sully and Brian jog alongside holding the bike steady.[

]BRIAN
Keep her straight.

Sully and Brian let go and for the first time Anthony rides on his own.

ANTHONY
I'm ridin'.

Anthony rides with greater control each minute and heads straight for Grace.

Miss Grace, look at me... I'm ridin' all by my myself.

Grace can't resist Anthony's enthusiasm, smiling as he rides circles around her.

GRACE
Careful, not too fast.

Anthony beams as he rides around her, but [furrows his brow in pain and reaches for his knee, letting go of the handlebar]. He loses control and crashes. Sully and Brian, Colleen, Mike and Robert E converge on Anthony; Grace follows after a moment.

ROBERT E
I don't understand. He's been fine all week.

MIKE
No symptoms?

ROBERT E
Nothin'.

Mike reaches Anthony and begins to examine him.

MIKE
Anthony, can you move your arms and legs?

Anthony looks up into Grace's eyes, trying to ignore the growing pain.

BRIAN
Same thing happened last time he tried to ride the bike.

Anthony pulls Mike to him and tries to whisper.

ANTHONY
You gotta fix me. Can't be broke or Miss Grace'll send me away.

Grace looks to Mike, she's heard every word, then turns away. HOLD on Mike, not sure how she's going to make Anthony well.

FADE OUT.

EXT. CLINIC - ESTABLISHING - DAY SIX 34

INT. CLINIC - DAY SIX 35

Mike takes charge, Colleen assists, as Robert E carries Anthony to the examining table. Sully and Brian wait outside. Grace stands just inside the door.

MIKE
Colleen, hot compresses might help.

COLLEEN
I'll get 'em.

Colleen leaves the room. Mike gently bends Anthony's wrist.

MIKE
How does this feel?

Anthony moans and looks at Grace, afraid to say anything in front of her.

MIKE
Grace, perhaps it's best if you wait outside.

GRACE
No.
(a beat)
I wanna help.

ROBERT E
What can we do?

MIKE
The pain seems localized in his joints. Try massaging him, like this.

Grace hesitates, then follows Mike's example and begins to massage Anthony's wrists. Anthony moans in pain when Grace touches him. Grace pulls back, frightened.

GRACE
I'm hurtin' him.

Robert E steps in, takes her place. Grace backs away.

Anthony, you're gonna be alright.

Alors dis moi, tu fais quoi de beau ?

Sonmi451 (14:47)

Sonmi451 (14:52)

A bientôt peut être.
