Sarah Michelle Gellar

Tells Betty Crocker To Move Over & Says Always Smile

Sarah Michelle Gellar was far more adorable than we ever expected – and we expected a lot. We haven’t really gotten over her badass Buffy days, and why should we? The show made up so much of our childhood, as did movies likeCruel Intentions where Gellar also played a fan favorite (and okay, super evil) vixen.

Now, the actress is taking on a new field – food – with her new companyFoodstirs, which offers convenient and healthy ways to bring families together in the kitchen. The company provides tasty baking products and kits that also aim at a healthier lifestyle, which is why Gellar is telling Betty Crocker to get out of her way (the same way she told Reese Witherspoon).

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

My ideal food day would be a day where I could eat as much as I wanted and calories didn’t count. There would definitely be lots of coffee, lots of sushi and fresh fish, some pasta and a generous amount of dark chocolate. I am extremely fortunate that my husband – who is an excellent chef – is working on a cookbook and I “help him” by tasting (eating) everything.

A beauty mainstay that hasn’t changed since your Buffy years…

Honestly, I don’t care what they say about smiling causing wrinkles, happiness is my key to everything. Glowing definitely works from the inside out. That being said, water, keeping yourself moving, and sleep are definitely important.

Advice you’d give your younger self…

I think that no matter what, my advice would definitely fall on deaf ears, but it would be to appreciate the little moments, to stop and enjoy life a bit more. I think in my twenties I kept thinking I had my whole life ahead of me, and things could wait. But the truth is, you never know how life can change in an instant; the people that you thought would always be there may not. Now having kids, when they stop on a walk for twenty minutes to look at a leaf, I try and take that time too.

In this day and age, what’s your personal definition of good content?

There is so much content now and so many different ways to consume that content. For me, it’s all about the voice. If it’s unique and authentic and has an interesting perspective, I will definitely check it out.

What’s the best and worst advice you’ve ever received?

I’ve always believed that there is no bad advice; it’s all about what you do with the information. If someone advises me to run into oncoming traffic, then that is useful information for me, as I now know that this is not a person to look towards for advice and ideas.

What was the inspiration behind Foodstirs?

Our children were definitely the initial inspiration for Foodstirs. I am always looking for activities that my children and I can do together, where the time we spend is truly valuable. When my children showed an interest in the kitchen, I used that as a jumping off point. All the research I did kept telling me the same things: When kids are in the kitchen, they are working on their fine and gross motor skills, math, science, and vocabulary. Even more importantly, the numbers drastically reduce for teens having depression, diabetes and learning challenges. My kids particularly showed an interest in baking and who can blame them? But as a busy parent I wanted the project to be creative (I am an avid crafter) and have clean ingredients. I could not believe some of the products on the market. There were words I couldn’t pronounce or recognize. That was such an inspiration for us. We wanted a way to curate a creative baking experience, even for people with zero skill, with ingredients that were better for you.

Your most memorable acting experience and why…

I have been so fortunate and have had so many incredible experiences. It’s like asking me to pick a favorite child. (For the record, I love them equally). Buffy has been incredible for its impact, Cruel Intentions for all its guilty pleasures,Saturday Night Live for being part of its legacy, to most recently Crazy Ones and working with the iconic Robin Williams.

Your brand is a lot about food and family. With the holidays coming up, can you give us five gift ideas for a husband, and five for a wife?

It’s hard to give great gift ideas when you don’t know the people. To me, that’s the most important part of a gift – knowing the person and getting them something truly special to them. One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure. Some of my favorite gifts have been the most thoughtful. I love a good homemade gift. For my kids first birthdays my mom made me personalized Monopoly sets, where all the cards are unique to our family. I treasure them.

What are your favorite cities for food? What restaurants do you go to in each?

I love trying new cities and chefs. Sometimes you find the most surprising delights in the most unlikely places. There’s an amazing sushi restaurant in Austin, Texas called Uchi. Normally when you think of Austin you think of BBQ, which by the way is amazing, but this sushi restaurant is so creative and delicious. As a born and raised New Yorker, I am definitely biased into thinking we have some of the best food. Los Angeles also has some really great options especially when it comes to farm-to-table. And spending time in Tokyo was a food lover’s dream come true, especially the fish market.

What are a few workouts you’ve recently become addicted to?

I love staying active, especially living in Los Angeles. I am very fortunate for our year-round good weather and access to great hiking trails, which I find a great way to stay fit and motivated (Good scenery definitely motivates me). I also love core yoga as a body and mind workout.

What do you always bring to a dinner party? What do you put out always as a host?

I always bring a host gift. I like to give nice candles, as they are a gift for the entire house. Archipelago makes some of my favorite scents. If it’s truly a host “ess” gift, I give Kai scents. Lately my dinner parties have been more family-oriented, so I like to have fun craft projects for the kids to do, so the adults can enjoy the company and maybe a cocktail.

What’s always in your bag?

I think the better question might be what isn’t in my bag? Currently I am obsessed with lavender hand sanitizer. I know hand sanitizer is not a substitute for soap but in a pinch it’s better than nothing, especially on-the-go with kids.

In the same vein as ‘what is the new black’ in fashion, what’s ‘the new potato’ right now?

Foodstirs is the new potato (I say move over Betty Crocker – it’s time to start baking healthier. Baking can taste good, be creative and better for you).
